Confirmed on store! Faulty compass and accelerometer on Xperia Play - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

16 Xperia Play with the same problem and counting
Reported on stock rom, DoomLord and CM7 for now
Problem: The compass and accelerometer sensors do a little weird or inexact movements
Conclusions for now: The sensors on the Xperia Play work correctly but under low current and that makes the sensors don't work correctly. Faulty driver? Faulty batch? Defect in the fabrication process? Don't know
Tests made with Xperia Play and other phones to compare (I tested on a Nexus One and a HTC Wildfire). Results that Xperia Play performs less than other worst or similar phones
Test you can do to look for this problem: Install any aplication that uses compass or acelerometer, I used "3d compass" because it uses the two sensors, compass to point north and accelerometer to move the 3d model on screen, in "3d compass" if the compass doesn't points perfectly to north or move smoothly (my Nexus One does) you have this problem.
You can look how are working your sensors too with an apk like "Z-DeviceTest", it shows the sensor's actual state, power current, resolution and sensibility
Known solutions: ¿? none for the moment
Problem confirmed on store by an the employee tested my phone and 2 Xperia Play more, the other two phones have the same problem. Reported to SonyEricsson
On the Vodafone store the employee said me that if I want, they send my phone to repair at SonyEricsson but they can't change it, because the other 2 phones that they have in the store have the same problem. That seems that the sensors on this phone are like this, but they will report that to their distribuitor and SE to avoid client complaints. (My complain seems the first one about this)
"History of the problem"
Yesterday I was trying "Satellite AR" apk, and found that it doesn't works correctly, compass and accelerometers weren't working correctly. So I tried "3d Compass" apk, and the same thing, the compass was making weird movements, so I took my old Nexus One and installed the same programs. I found that the programs work perfectly on the Nexus One, smooth movements in compass and accelerator.
So I installed Z-DeviceTest apk and found that the Nexus One had the same or older sensors that the Xperia Play, but the sensors were working with more power and precission on the Nexus One than in the Xperia Play. Strange don't you think?
I asked a friend to try Z-DeviceTest on his HTC Wildfire, and I found that it has exactly the same sensors as the Nexus, they work a lot better than in the Xperia Play but different that in the Nexus One. o_0 why?
I asked on HTCmania forums for help and found that other person has the same problem with a different rom (DoomLord 2.3.3), mine is the official UK one 2.3.3 (4.0.A.2.368) rooted but with blocked BL.
Now I think that this can only mean two things, bad drivers or a faulty batch of Xperia Plays
Can someone else try this, and see if the values are the same, and has the same problems?
By the way, here are some "screens/pictures" (I haven't got time to connect all phones to my computer so I didn't make screenshots, sorry)

anyone with this problem

Seems like you need to get a new play. got a warranty?

You can reset the magnetic compass by moving your play in a figure of 8.

Any way to reset the accelerometer?
Mine has always leant to the left.

And why diferent persons of diferent places have exactly the same values? (bad luck?)
What values has your Xperia Play? is your Xperia Play moving smooth in compass and accelerometer apks? and what rom did you have?
More info, better for all the people with that problem
I will change the phone yes or yes, because I wanted the black and when I bought they didn't have it, and this is the perfect excuse to change it. But if there is a problem with the driver in some official roms, it doesn't matters if I change the phone

As AndroHero said, you can calibrate the sensors by making an eight in the air with your phone on the hand (There are tutorials on youtube too ^^)
If you can, post your sensors specs here to see if you have the same problem that I have

I've tested my Xperia Play with the app Z-Devicetest and I get the EXACT same results seen on the capture from the first post.
Sony Ericsson should do something about this...

I usually don't have any problem with the accelerometer, but I can confirm that the e-compass is wonky at best. Compared side by side (YES, _AFTER_ running some figure 8's) with other devices (Moto Droid, HTC Thunderbolt, an old Windows Mobile phone) the xPeria play is twitchy and often gives the wrong heading. I haven't been able to figure out what is causing it exactly though.

I just tried Z-device test and my accelerometer seems to be all over the place even if lying flat on the table.

Same here, as I said I think it's because the sensor doesn't receive the correct current to work well and the result fluctuates

I took my phone to the vodafone store and reported as a faulty one, the employee tested 2 Xperia Plays more and they have the same problem. Confirmed that this problem isn't mine, clearest imposible.

Another one confirmed on HTCmania forums (link)

Does this issue with accelerometer prevent the phone to switch correctly to landscape/portrait mode ?
And is it annoying with games such are Doodle Jump ?
I'd like to know because I'm getting the phone next week and it's always time to cancel my order if I find theses issues being real flaws to me (on the other hand i don't care about compass but I understand how irritating it can be..).

Sorry, but I found the dramatic music in the video to be hilarious

The e-compass is a bit different than the accelerometer. However, I've noticed the Accelerometer to be a bit twitchy. I can certainly play Doodle-Jump on my phone, but have to under-do my movements. I think this is mostly in relation to the e-compass, it does affect the accelerometer, but not in so nearly as dastardly a way. On the e-compass, it causes havoc and completely wrong headings.

It's less acurate than other phones with worst quality, but works

its certainly not ideal but my compass still points in roughly the correct direction, i might not trust it to go hiking with tho

I bet this will screw up my ghost radar app

[Q] Gyroscopic camera

Or gyro stabilized camera.
My train of thought might be too naive; (phone has gyroscope, phone has camera, why not!) but really is it something possible to give to our DHDs? A videocamera with which no matter how the phone was rotated, the horizon in the recorded video will always stay horizontal. They got used in MotoGP.
Here's a video example for anyone unfamiliar with them - skip to 40seconds in
motogp.com/en/videos/2010/Rossi+debuts+Gyroscopic+OnBoard+camera
Anyone got any idea? Or maybe I should actuallt ask in general android apps.
It wouldnt be impossible but it would take quite a lot of processing power and would take a lot of time to make. And I'm not sure if anybody has that sort of time.
You sure the phone has a gyroscope? Your not confusing it with the accelerometer are you?

And that isn't the correct way to build it either.
Oh ok, thanks a lot. That provided some food for Googling on these things.
Silly marketing got me again; so a g-sensor is actually an accelerometer which is different from a gyroscope and not as accurate at measuring movement (tilt/pitch in specific). DHD has accelerometer only while iPhone 4 and upcoming Sensation are also equipped with a gyroscope (or gyro-sensor).

Time Warp Camera

I just saw a video of Blackberry 10 - not to say that I would ever go back to Blackberry, but there is a very nice camera feature that they made public called Time Warp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF2cLwPHaNY)
Does anyone know if Android has an app that can also do what is shown in the video?
Basically, the camera app allows you to change someone's face that blinked to seconds later where they weren't blinking. It probably is similar to the burst show using Samsung's camera app, but instead of choosing an entirely new picture, you only change the person's face. This would make sense if there are two people in the picture and one picture one person has their eyes open and the other close and vise versa.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: sorry, I meant to post this in the Q/A forum. If a mod reads this, please move it if possible or just delete it.

You know there is a similar-ish feature in the galaxy S3 ? It's called smile shot, and as much as the interface is not as fancy as RIM's one, it does basically the same thing!

Just wondering if the RIM camera would allow one to adjust the expressions of all the people in the photo independently. For instance can one also chose a different moment for the guy in the photo ? That would be really cool, however I think it might not be the case as one would then have to interpolate the background.
Edit : I mean the photo they show in the youtube video

I watched another youtube video of RIM's camera app and yes, you can do that. Basically manipulate each persons facial expression independently to simulate something happened that really didn't.

That's a nice feature, but that only takes one person to smile. RIM's feature allows you to pick the best facial expression from multiple people individually in a picture.
In the newest note II Video they introduced this same feature in the new camera app. Extract the app from drewgaren's ROM which has the note II's camera apk?

iOS has an app called GroupShot that does just that. You can take a lot of photos and then highlight someones face and it'll show you that persons face in every shot and you can pick which you like best and it'll intelligently put it in the photo without it looking like it's been pasted it. It's a very smart app.
Only problem, nothing like this on Android yet.
I think some one needs to port over that blackberry ten camera app to android... I would try to do it but I have no programming skills really.. sad..

[Q] Note 2 : Street view jitter in compass mode ?

Hi
I bought the Note II 2 days ago, and I ended trying Google Street View in compass mode... Nice software...
As probably you know, in this mode the orientation of the handset controls what you see on the screen, offering a better 3d experience than simply sliding your finger on the screen to change the viewpoint (try it: maps --> select a place with street view available --> enter street view mode --> press "menu" left virtual touch --> select compass mode, and play with it!).
This is all nice and well, except that I experience on my phone a serious random jitter (mostly azymuthal) in the street view: a few degrees more or less, not much but enough to make you dizzy after a while. This happens also in Google Skymap.
I tried to recalibrate the gyroscope, also had a look in the hidden "test" menu (dialed *#0*#), and installed marketplace compass apps which offer calibration tools... to no avail. I also changed position in my flat to check for stray magnetic fields effects, but nothing new.
I know there are other devices forum threads where this type of problems is explored (not much as far as i know), the point here is I would like people with Note 2 at hand to check if they experience the same type of problems: I'd like to know if this could be related to a hardware problem, or if it is another screw up by Google/Samsung ...! :silly:
What do you think ?
Same thing here, I've had my T-Mobile GNote2 for just under two weeks and when I tried the compass this am I found the same jitter you describe, using GPS Test app and the diagnostic mode you found. Started a thread in T-Mobile GNote2 here, looks like it wasn't a priority for Samsung.
I'm getting gitter in Street View too. Damn annoying.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2
Bad jitter here too .... and this was one of the features that seemed best to try out on the larger screen... Hopefully there will be a software fix. If some people would post that they have no jitter in street view compass mode, then I'd go see if it was just my/some units with the defect and exchange while in my 14 days.
I can confirm the jittering on my Note 2. It's pretty annoying. Calibration hasn't worked for me.
---------- Post added at 07:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:19 PM ----------
In other compass apps, I can't experience any jittering. So I think it must be directly related to Street View and how they read/process the values from the compass. Maybe the interpolation is wrong?
Well, I can tell you that I exchanged TWICE my Note II since I posted the problem on the forum (one was exchanged for another reason)... and the jitter was and is here on the three handsets.
The last one I got works marginally better, but the effect is still quite annoying.

I tried a few compass apps. They mostly had the jitter as well... and the *# test menu showed the same jitter back and forth on the compass :=/
Are you all running on stock rom and kernel? So maybe we can isolate the source for the jittering.

Hm, stock rom/kernel...why doesn't Samsung test this stuff before releasing. Now we need to find out, if it's a software failure or a hardware problem. I have tested this compass app and there is no jittering. Can anyone confirm this?

That's exactly what I'm saying! I actually called Samsung's main technical services department and the person I spoke to didn't have a clue what I was on about, so I had to describe it to her carefully. And by the way, yes I've tried it on all the available compass apps on the play store and they all have the same issue. To compare, I used my dad's S3, totally fine. This is one of the reasons I bought the phone in the first place, to use the street view in compass mode after seeing it on the S3 but its a total letdown, which leads me to believe that its very likely a hardware issue, and that's what I'm dreading.

Maybe it also could be a software problem. I don't think that Samsung includes defect hardware sensors in all of their Note 2 devices (therefor they have extensive hardware tests). I hardly believe they hadn't had the time to write a proper kernel driver with interpolation for the magnetometer. And probably all other kernels base on the kernel sources, Samsung has published. So this could be an inherited problem. Would be interesting if the Note 2 and the S3 share the same magnetometer sensor. Can somebody elaborate on this? If so, then we need to compare the kernel sources for both sensors and try do debug the problem step by step.

So you're telling me this problem may be fixed with either a 4.2 or 5.0 update? One can only wish right now.
Jitter here too. Very annoying. Quite shocked this got past QC.
Tried multiple roms and kennels, always the same.
Well I'm now on stock 4.1.2, and sad to say its the same problem. Absolutely nothing has changed. I think we're stuck with this issue guys, such a shame
it is a big samsung problem. it is on the S3 as well...
I had the same problem. I tried several compass applications from the market and celebrated the compass several times. The only thing that really helped to get the digital compass get stable is to turn off all wireless functions, including the phone, as well as the phone sound and power saving functions. I turned off anything that might produce a megnatic field in the phone, and then calebrated the compass again. Now the compass works fine after turning on everything.

Keyboard glitch?

Anyone else having trouble with the AOSP keyboard? I have experienced issues with the keyboard nearly every time I use it. The keyboard seems to pickup rapid taps of a button when I only press it once, never had this issue with my old N7. It even does it sometimes when I try to "swipe" type. Anyone else experiencing this?
I am completely stock ATM...
Check your screen touch inputs. Some devices are having touch issues and dead spots.
My keyboard is great and no rapid taps.
Yeah I seem to have these issues as well. I'm not sure what dead spots would have to to with all the double clicks. Either way I just ran a dead spot app and it appears I do not have any.

yup im running stock keyboard... i reinstalled google keyboard from the play store and it didn't help... rebooted a few times... no help.. disabled google currents, no help.
next step is to do a full restore... if the problem still persists then im going to exchange for a new one and hope i don't find any other issues...
the one i got is pretty good (no bleed or dead pixels) - im afraid if i exchange im going to be plagued with other hardware issues. if its a simple software issue - i can wait for an update vs risking hardware faults in a exchange.
I've had probs with LatinIme but not LatinGoogleIme. Ive jus gave up on ASOP LatinIme for now ... Google Ime seems fine tho...

I don't think these issues are with the keyboard app, it has something to do with the touchscreen and/or software controlling it. I add the latter only cause it's not always bugging out.
I tested using Touch Test which draws a continuous line as you move your finger and disappears if it fails to track. I have very little issues with it tracking and can see no apparent dead spots on my digitizer, yet if I'm holding my n7 in portrait and my thumb or middle finger over reach just a bit and touch the edge (on the thin bezel side), the touch screen will sometimes lose the tracking...
To further test, I went into Developer Options and turned on Show touches. I then went back into Touch Test and started tracking along the edges of the n7 slowly... every once in a while, i'd see extra phantom touches appear elsewhere on the screen and the line I was drawing neatly along the edge, abruptly jumps out to that phantom touch point (seen by the Show touches as a white glowing circle).
To make this more obvious, try drawing a line down the left edge of your screen and try moving your thumb on the right edge and see if the line you were drawing jumps from one side to the other creating a sideways graph looking drawing.
Now, try this again, but don't use the very edge, just do it more in the middle...run both fingers down, and you should only draw a single line with no jumping as it successfully tracks the first finger it sees.
My thought is, when you are touch typing, the base of your thumbs sometimes hit the bottom corners of the screen and this causes jumps or phantom presses on your keyboard.
Can somebody else test and see if this happens to them as well?
It is most certainly a driver issue. The sensitivity is way to high. Hopefully they provide a bug fix update to lower the sensitivity. That should fix the double button press issue.

I swapped mine a short time ago today, and the replacement has neither the multiple simultaneous touch event problem nor the oil slick around the nexus logo on the rear of the device.

good theory, for those not experiencing the issue: did you update to the latest 4.3 version?

Swapping can fix it somewhat because there are certainly slight variations in the coating on the glass so some might not exhibit this behavior as much as others. However, if it were me, I would just wait to see if the next update fixes it before going through the hassle of an exchange.

It's hard to say when they will release an update. It could be days, weeks or months. But I would wait until the end of your return period at least.
Any new info on this? I also noticed my pinch to zoom function on Google Maps is very jumpy. Sometimes when I pinch out it zooms me in.

Maps is a bit laggy on the newest update, so I wouldn't rule that out. I have noticed the Google keyboard has a bad habit of locking up for a few seconds at a time though, which can be annoying if you're putting in a long password.

[Clone] HDC One MAX 5.9" MTK6582 16GB / Real IR remote

Hi guys
I just got my hands on the clone called "HDC One MAX" (a.k.a. STAR One Max) with 5.9" MTK6582 16GB and Real IR remote control.
It is a perfect clone/replica of the known HTC One MAX 5.9" phablet.
I would like to start this thread to gather and collect as much info, tips & tricks, modifications, hacks etc. for this device as possible. Also the software/ROM on this phone is not 100% good yet, so I hope we can help each other fixing them.
First impressions:
The phone looks 1:1 to the original, this is one of the BEST clones I have ever seen - it even came in an original looking HTC box. Everything is 100% like on the original. The backcover and front speakers are made of real metal. The phone is also very heavy like the original. In matter for outer design they did a really good job.
It is equipped with 2 real front speakers, both speakers work! and they are actually pretty loud and nice. Still the quality is not near the original.
My phone came with the same bootup screen as the original and with all logos. Even the charger and USB cable is a perfect replica.
Overall the phone is very fast, and the UI almost looks like the real Sense from HTC. I am going to test it some more the next days, and write some extra later.

Cons & pros
- Very nice clone, looks 1:1 and has almost same materials
- Very big and clear screen, good colors
- 2 real dual speakers on the front
- Real IR remote control that works
- Google play store works, same does the stock Youtube app
- It came with good accessories, screenprotector & hardcase
- 3G works (I am in Germany, and here it works fine)
- The touch can act a bit strange sometimes
- Google play services is having a conflict on this phone
- The price is in the high end because of the use of real metal
- The fingerprint scanner has no real function it seems (yet?)
- No backlight in the touchbuttons
Camera test
The camera is "OK" and typical Mediatek

Tips & Tricks/Hacks
Can be rooted with latest Framaroot (select the last solution)
Can be backuped with MTK Droid Tools
Can install CWM via MTK Droid Tools
Issues
- The Google Play Services can not be updated together with Google Search, seems to be some kind of conflict on the phones software.
But I can use Youtube that was on the stock ROM when I got it, but I cant sign in. Still Google Play store works fine.
- Roaming warning can not be disabled in the options, but can be disabled with Xposed Framework and GravityBox.
- My homebutton can get unresponsive after I open the multitask overview (but turning off the screen, and on again, fixes the button again)
- After a factory reset and format of internal storage, I have lost the HTC bootup animation. I have the HTC One animation in my system/media, but for some reason the phone don't use it at bootup. It just bootup with a silverflashing "android" logo in the middle of the screen. Same with the shutdown animation. (I got my animations back with a CWM backup I made before I lost it)

I recommend you to make a backup as the first thing, when you get the phone. A CWM backup and maybe also a backup with MTKdroidtools.
I lost the bootup animation after I tried to do a factory reset of the phone. But because of my CWM backup I could get it back again.
Overall the phone is really nice, and I am currently also using Xposed Framework with Gravity box on it, works fine. But I still haven't been able to fix the Google apps, so they can be updated.

Sorry but I don't have any antenna problems on mine. I always have good reception.
Did you try to switch from automode to only 2G for example?

What I would try is:
0. Make CWM backup off the original ROM, guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2730031
1. Factory reset and format internal totally if possible (HTC boot may be lost!)
2. Download the stock ROM from Needrom http://www.needrom.com/mobile/11-one-max-mt6582/ and flash it to the phone with Spflashtool use guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2730031
If your phones ROM have been modified in some way before, it must at least be stock by now with the flashed stock ROM.
3. If still not ok, ask the seller for a solution or send it back.
s7yler said:
It sounds like the internal ROM is unmounted/damaged or changed for some reason on your phone.
It normally should have at least 14.39 GB internal storage available.
You didnt change anything to the EBR files or? I guess not.
