Sprint Updates, do I want them? (rooted phone)

Hi all. I am a proud EVO user and generally love the phone. It's rooted for use w/ wifi tether. Not really using root much beyond that. Question, do I want or need the Sprint system update(s)? I had read that unrooting my phone could keep it from being rootable later on. Will the phone perform any better w/ the updates? Are there alternatives? My last phone was WM and it had a custom ROM. What do you all think?
Thanks!

Anything Sprint releases ends up on here rooted and ready for flashing (usually within hours). I would not do any ota updates knowing that.

Thanks, that being said, should I flash to a custom ROM? I'm sure all this has been asked and answered, so appologies to that. Also, if i do that, should I back up my current apps (what should I use) and when i restore can i restore to a newly flashed phone or is part of the back up process the system files?
People do create rooted versions of the stock ROMs that Sprint releases. So, you can try custom ROMs, but you don't HAVE to. You can get the latest one here:

Here's a thread where you can grab all of the latest Radio, WiMax, PRL, etc updates:

No, installing and official OTA can cause you to lose root. Download the rooted version ^ or stall the latest update for your rom.

[Q] Upgraded to the unofficial Froyo 2.2 months ago and now I want to root

Ok, So my wife got an Epic 4G last year and I did the easy root method using Z4Root app so she could have the wifi tether app. Everything was fine until someone leaked the first 2.2 build which i believe is DK28? cant remember for sure, wife is gone with her phone. Well i just did the manual update of it after I had downloaded to her phone and to make a long story short she lost root of course and that build is horrible.
I pretty much just need to know how to get her phone re-rooted the way it was and be able to run different roms for her. I have an EVO and I am very good with flashing roms on that but never really messed around with the Epic 4G. I have thought of using the oneclickroot method but just wanted to check that it will work for a phone running different 2.2 firmware.
Go to samsung.com, click the support tab, typein sph d700 (that's the model number for the phone) and then click downloads I think and then download/run the samsungfwupdater.exe
That will put you on stock eb13 (froyo 2.2.1)
Then use the oneclick and you'll have root and clockwork installed
Depending on your internet speed, you can upgrade to stock froyo and have root in as little as 5 minutes!
Also, after you put her on eb13, I recommend flashing the camera lag fix, which fixes a bug in the camera which makes it lag in low light areas (which was actually the result of a line of code that samsung managed to notput in....literally ONE LINE OF CODE LOL)

You can also use the one-click on dk28 to get root and recovery, but updating to eb13 without using odin has caused some weird issues for some people.

update android epic touch

I just recently got an epic 4g touch. how do i receive new modem updates without rooting the phone. My last update was EL29.
You won't receive any modem updates until it's offical and pushed by sprint, but you could download the modem and odin it onto your phone without rooting it.

[Q] SuperSU not allowing binary update

I have had this phone (HTC 4G LTE) rooted previously but reverted it back with RUU. I decided that after using Jelly Bean for a bit I would re root this phone. Everything seems to be working great, when apps need superuser access I can give it. The problem is when I open the SuperSU application a message window pops up saying "The SU Binary needs to be updated", I click continue and the phone just resets. So I cant go in and deny access or grant, unless asked by a program..
So far I have tried going into recovery and clearing the cache and dalvik cache to no avail. I read online to install superuser and grant supersu access, which makes no sense to me but I tried it. I also tried downloading a new zip of it and installing it again in recovery.
I have read in a couple places that some other have had this problem but nobody came back with a solution..
I am by no means an expert just a person that likes to play with their toys in their spare time. Any help would be appreciated.
Oh not sure if this helps;
Software version: 3.15.651.16
Android version: 4.1.1
HTC Sence version: 4+
HBoot: 2.09
Head over to the EVO 4G LTE Q&A section (you're in the OG EVO Q&A section) and post your question there. I had the same problem running Viper's odexed JB stock rooted ROM, but since I've switched to MeanBean it hasn't been an issue. Also, if you look in the SuperSU app itself you should see that it is version 0.99, which is the latest version as I understand it.

[Q] need android 4.3 or higher on rooted freedompop evo 4g pc36100

Trying to get a new Jawbone up and htc evo 4g we got my son for Christmas to talk to each other. Need to be running 4.3 or higher to make it work. Burned several hours of Christmas searching...gave up. Got it unlocked and rooted, but can't find a rom to flash that will work yet. Thanks
Try here.. http://evervolv.com/devices/supersonic. Not acies but the nighties. Think you might need twrp recovery to flash it but that is easy to find too with Google. Good luck.
