[Odin/Heimdall][kernel][WIP]EG30, stock, busy-box, CWM, root, init.d, boot anim - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey all, this is my first kernel attempt and just repacked it tonight... so I haven't had a chance to try it myself, yet. I'm posting it here in case anyone is brave enough to give it a go before I get a chance, or if you'd like to cross-check my work.
Basically, it's based off bubby's CWM kernel. From there, I added root, init.d, boot animation support and busybox from directions provided by the brilliant chris41g. The busybox is his 1.20.0 script. SU is the 3.0 binaries. You'll need to rename your bootanimation.zip to sanim.zip.
Technically, I think this is considered a plus kernel.
So, a thanks is due to bubby for the base kernel, and to chris41g for stopping my head from spinning, and making things easier to understand (been 6 years or so since I looked at any code). Anyone I'm missing, I'd be more than honored if you speak up.
The DL http://dev-host.org/73mnp1f4lr81/EG30_Stock_Root_CWM_BB.tar.gz
Like everyone else says, attempt with caution, and at your own risk. This should be considered a work-in-progress until I've had a chance to test it out myself. I am not responsible for anyone bricking their device, so you've been warned. I am, however, grateful to anyone willing to try it out.

Here we go gimme a minute.... flashing now
Edit: booted up, quadrant 3096, no interactive governer, will have to run to check for battery drain, I have only experienced LOS twice up to now so have to see where that goes. I'll get back to you...

You might want to make sure the file extension is .tar and not something else like .gz
I haven't flashed this yet, thats just my opinion.
EDIT: I just looked at it. Extract the .tar file inside the .gz archive.

Here's the .tar extracted with 7zip. Was waiting for some more opinions/reviews before I test. Who wants to jump?

Can someone who knows how to compile kernels change the boot anamation target file?

It's an open WIP...that means people can help out, test, etc etc. A community project for the community to work on (if they want to).
The Evo had dozens of these anyone remember Evoblur?
Anyone who gets stuck at the boot screen, just flash a stable kernel over it and you should be back to normal

Is the boot animation not working, or do you want to be able to name it bootanimation.zip? If that's the case, I could name it anything I want... nothing wrong with sanim.zip. If the boot animation isn't working, I'll go back and see what I did wrong.
Like AbsoluteZeroGI said, it's an open WIP. I appreciate all the help I can get.

OK, had a chance to flash this morning before work. Stuck on boot loop. I'll have time to troubleshoot when I get home from work.

I ran across this problem with one of my tabs, but not both.
If I accessed CWM using the power and Vol+ key CWM would boot, but fail at flashing.
Go to advanced, reboot recovery
Then try to flash the kernal, then rom.
Im about to post the link to the "package" that has the zimage so people can flash the kernal via heimdall.

So I applied the .so file from the voodoo kernal thread, and rotation works on this ROM. It's also pairing with my bluetooth keyboard folio, so that's win. I pink puffy heart the browser, too. It's fun.

OK, first off.....NOT MY PORT.
But I did stay at a holiday in last night.
This is a cdma cm7 gingerbread port, in a way its kinda a hybrid build. I myself am working on stripping out all the cm7 stuff, fixing camera, apps, weird touchscreen bugs, etc.
I'm kinda shooting for an aosp-ish build, however, I am waiting on permission from original developer to publish any changes I make.
3g and wifi do work.

So is this from the original gsII kernel with et4g modules or something? Also i have a question... On the original gsII is the recovery built into the kernel or is it seperate? If so could we just flash there cwm and make a backup and then take that backup and extract what we need? Or would that not work?

An Absolutely Stock EG30 Kernel *Pulled from a non-rooted phone.
Credit to myself, Ninpo, leatherneck6017, and Pyrostic.
What This Means
With a completely stock kernel pulled from a phone that has never been rooted, developers can compile custom kernels that don't use unofficial pieces from international phones, and anybody can restore the stock kernel with Odin. Therefore, there is no risk in rooting your phone anymore.

Since I'm nice and believe in the community being a place to share works and all work towards a common goal, I've taken the time to decompiled the kernel down to the initramfs and upload it for developers on my Github.

How to Flash
If you find yourself wanting to flash the stock EG30 kernel that you can download over at ACS, then you're going to want to become acquainted with Odin.
Once you've come to know (and most likely love) Odin, you can flash the kernel tar by putting it in the PDA slot.
No pit is needed when you are flashing a kernel, and you should always make sure the ONLY thing checked on the left side is auto reboot and NOT repartition.
Once the tar is in PDA and you have double checked that repartition is NOT selected you can go ahead and start the flashing process.
If you've done everything the right way then your phone will boot into the lockscreen and you can go on your way.

I renamed the original jar, installed the new jar, set permissions to 644 and renamed the odex.
How can I name the file back to what it was? Possible from standard recovery?

push the original files back into the proper location from the boot loader through adb.
Applied to my phone on Synergy r50 i'll try to remember to report back i'm mostly interested in battery life.
EDIT: So far I'm going to probably have to switch back. The wakelock works flawless and the phone seems to turn on faster as well as overall seems a little more responsive (probably just a placebo effect) but my battery is down to 79% with 23 minutes of screen-on time for the day.

By boot loader, do you mean the screen with the word "ODIN MODE" at top and it says "Downloading..." in middle of screen? I get no devices when I issue adb devices.
In the recovery menu, I get feedback on adb devices. From main menu, it says device ID and "inactive." If I select to update via adb, it says ID and "sideload."
UPDATE: Never mind. Not sure what the deal was, old sdk tools or something, but I tried recovery again and "adb devices" properly showed the device as "recovery" rather than "inactive." I am up and running again. Whew!
So as I see it, this mod won't work with odex ROMs. Right?
There is always a Odex

Please make sure you have a recent back up of your phone. Also doubly make sure to backup your /efs folder and your /dev/block/platform/15570000.ufs/by-name/RADIO device. There is a risk of permanently bricking your device if the radio upgrade fails. Remember this is all at your own risk. I promise no function or fitness of use. This will probably cause your phone to blow up and start a thermonuclear war and trip your Knox counter

Since its such a precious folder I would do this
tar cf /data/local/tmp/efs.tar /efs/*
dd if=/dev/block/platform/15570000.ufs/by-name/EFS of=/data/local/tmp/efs.img
then adb pull those files to your computer and put them in a safe place
After reading the stuff in red.....I'm certain I will not flash this....Lol

What changes, if any, have been made to the original dump that @Sunderwear provided? I assume you replaced the app_process files, but any other changes?
I want to flash this but shi* I'm scared to brick it lol

I did that a bit differently. Supersu made backups of the original files. I just restored those. No other changes other then making a user friendly zip

Looking at the package, it only replaces your System partition, your Kernel, and your Radio.
An Odin-to-Stock would theoretically revert any damage this could do.

+1 I just wanted people to aware of the potential risk. Everything went fine for me but I don't want to give people a false sense of security.

Understood, flashing Radios is srs bsns.
In other news, the updater-binary isn't working for me. ... Using TWRP.
E: Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/blck_tw_511_samsung_oe6.zip'

Are you using the twrp posted in the op? Are you doing sideload or straight from the device (fwiw I only tested sideload) gimme a second and I'll add a md5sum
EDIT: MD5 (blck_tw_511_samsung_oe6.zip) = 6a96ab53a25ff76fb263a06a7efa256f
EDIT2: Just downloaded from mega and the file matches the original's md5
I say the first bricked phone will happen within 2 hours..
Folks, if you dont REALLY know what you are doing, please reconsider flashing this. And, if you dont know what ADB is, or what sideloading means, do NOT flash this...
And, mega thanks to the OP for putting this out there for the early adopters! :good::good:
No root for this yet correct ?

It was the TWRP. What's special about this "v2" ?

bug fixes like ADB over custom recovery and other things. Highly recommended to use this one

Can you expand a bit on what this exactly means- the two lines of script you posted here- are those the ADB pull lines we would use?
Just want to be completely clear on what we have to do to backup before we flash this ROM. Step by Step would be great.
Thanks again for all your work on this!
Working so far...
