[Q] Use Kindle Fire in Europe? - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys!
im from europe (austria) and have some connections in the USA.
so, they can send me a kindle fire. but now, the question is, is it compatible for european wifi, or is there any thing that i can not use it full in my country?
i know, a little bit stupid, but i want to know.....

Its very unlikely that it won't work.
It only has wifi and no 3G, or GPS or anything. So there isn't anything that is region specific on there. Only thing that might not work is perhaps Amazon Silk or other Amazon services, which is one of the selling points of the KF.

European WiFi is the same as US WiFi so it will work.

Just concern if Amazon would block any Kindle Fire using non-US IP to access. Without external SD card slot, we heavy reply on Wifi to access.

you think they block non US IP's? :/

I honestly don't think so, that would mean if you travel with your kindle fire to asia, europe or even to canada you couldn't use it at all. that makes no sense
i was playing with the idea too, getting me one but i lack those connections in the states. hopefully the prices wont be too high on eBay

Using a WiFi client from different regions shouldn't be a problem.
Just make sure you don't have an access point using the US/Asia specific Wifi channels, these are not allowed in europe and if the regulatory institution catches you, it will get expensive.

no, im using an original router from an austrian internet provider, shouldnt be a problem
can´t wait for my fire!!!

What definitely won't be available for you, at least for some time, is the Amazon Appstore, its limited to the US. And AFAIK the Android Market won't be available either...

i dont care about the amazon app store. but it would be bad if the market is not available. hope for kindle fire development

I don't think we'll no for sure until it comes out, but hopefully Amazon doesn't require a US IP address to access its servers.

i report at ~ 1. december (hopefully).

Hopefully Amazon wont block IPs but this is not something that hasnt been seen before. Apple and Google do it on their OSs.... Market, etc

Amazon block foreign IP-Adress.

Oh for goodness sake the device won't prevent you from accessing the internet! It's only the streaming/downloading services from amazon.com that won't work with a non US IP address.
Amazon prime can be accessed outwith the US using the appropriate VPN.
As a UK Kindle owner, I signed up with Amazon.com to temporarily switch my kindle account to get the small number of apps (word games etc) that were only available in the US. Then switched back to .co.uk. Just sign up using a US shipping service, with the address they provide when you set up an account (only costs when you get something shipped).
There are other ways Amazon can tell your location though - non US credit card for one, so I'm keeping my powder dry on getting a Fire to play with until someone else has tested the water!

ok, thanks bro

im from a non US location too. Can I use this as normal.tablet like install apps via sd card, cable, or usb?

How to view and buy paid apps anywhere in the world (without rooting!)

very simple and barely requires any effort.
I was sick and tired of not being able to buy paid apps, so i tried something stupid that worked like a charm.
This is the list of countries Android currently supports for paid apps:
Australia
Austria
Canada
France
Germany
Italy
Japan
Netherlands
New Zealand
Spain
Switzerland
United Kingdom
United States
Use any simcard from one of those countries in your device and paid apps will all appear, buy what you want, install, and put your defaulf sim back in.
I am not in one of those countries, i put a 5 year old UK Vodafone inactive simcard, and it worked.
bought Swiftreply Deluxe using my MC with no problems.
Brilliant
Will make sure to get a sim card and try it out when i get to UK in a month. I really hope it will work as i find it silly that google did not make apps available through google checkout or something like that.

go in to a "3" store and they'll give you a simcard for free.
Well, I thought so too and tryied it as soon as I got my Desire but it doesn't seam to work: I have an old inactive Vodafone UK SIM but can't see payied apps with it. Don't really understand why because in theory it SHOULD!
I'm a bit skeptical on this, especially since pascanu just confirmed it didn't work for him.
I'm in Hong Kong where paid applications are not available.
I recently went to the US where I found and bought an application (Beautiful Widgets). But I've not swapped out the SIM. In fact, I kept my device on Airplane mode the whole time.
I don't see how the SIM comes into play here.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love for this to actually work. But you need more people to test this theory of yours...
how about putting proxy in wifi..
I can verify that this works. I ordered Vodafone sim card from ebay and can see paid apps with it. I have also purhaced few apps. I live in Finland and many other finnish android users use same trick.
i dunno if you need root but i suggest you market enabler....i use it and it's great

I'm from one of the country, where u cant see the payd app. And i have a sim from Uk. For instancy, in my country Google Maps doesnt have updates( navigation beta and all other futures) and i put the sim from uk i download from market the update, but no succes the navigation are not availeble for here. But i try them in Uk and works perfect. And i see also the paid app. But that doesn't help me that much. I'm not cheap, but i'm a bit afraid to pay the app with my phone. By the way, how safetly it is to buy the app from your phone?!

your dealing with google here.. it takes care of all your transactions and sends the money to the developer, you can also refund if you didn't like the app within 24 hours of purchase, if you purchase it again after refund you can't get another refund, sounds like a fair deal.
Since my first post i've bought 2 more applications with my inactive vodafone simcard.
The thoery works guys, its easy and effective.

Ok, but could you please elaborate on that ? What have you actually tried, what happened, etc. etc. ?
You get a credit card with a valid address, postal code, even a phone number.
While this may all look ok while you're entering it in, when you actually go to add the funds, it says that it didn't work and asks you to try again.
There is no error code, it just asks you to do it again. I have tried it repeatedly with all manner of combinations of getting the address right etc.

I will try the usunlocked card now. I am in Europe and have an European GSM Galaxy Nexus. I have managed to install and get working all the google apps and markets with provider faking and us VPN address, without using any hacked apps. Movies market doesn't tell me my phone is rooted like it does on my Nexus One, but it tell me none of my cards are valid for movies. I haven't tried to add founds to top up on my 10$ wallet account. When the usunlocked validation process is finished I will try that as well as renting movies. Will report back.

Dude... the fourth response in this thread explicitly states that USunlocked does not work...? Or am I missing something?
I don't have a hacked wallet app. I don't think it matters much though since I think the problem lays with the type of card used. But anyway my main reason for trying this is to be able to buy music and rent movies, I hope they aren't so strict there.

If you just transfer manually from your bank account 20$ to the Google pre-paid card account number that is written in Wallet, does it work ?
not sure if it as simple as transferring money to the account number....
Hopefully someone finds a virtual credit card that works!

Then, can somebody in the US call the phone number shown in Wallet and ask them if a "friend" from outside US can transfer money manually so that the money eventually show up in Wallet account ?
The USunlocked card didn't work with me either, got the usual "funds not added". But it do work for renting movies and buying music, and that was what I hoped for. No stress with wallet here yet, not a single place to use it.

A social security number may be needed now...
Isn't it launching in UK for the Olympics? You might not have to wait much longer. On a side note, I have been using Google Wallet on my GN in US for a few weeks now and while it's absolutely awesome/futurisitic to use, it's surprising how few places take it here (I'm in NYC!). Google only has a very small number of partners and even the # of Mastercard PayPass locations is suprisingly small.
Hopefully things will pick up.
I'm just looking forward to an official Canadian launch soon. I have seen a lot of terminals that i could pay at using a GNEx
Okay, let me confirm some suspicions.
I can confirm that this method is working with a $25 Vanilla Mastercard (I'm located in Canada)
Second, a Social Security Number is only required after topping up more than two times. (Unconfirmed by me, but was stated in this thread)

The reason enter billing adresses to credit card payments is to verify your identity, obviously if your address on file with google doesnt match your cc billing adress thats on file with your bank, it will get declined. The reason vanilla works is because there is no address attached to it since you dont get billed, so you just create a fictive address with matching zip code you manually registered.
I just used my prepaid funds at a McDonald's in Brampton, Ontario and it was amazing, lol. I'm rooted by the way and used in no problem even with the unsupported device message.

Do you have a link to an up-to-date Market Enabler? Something that works with Jelly Bean and the Play Store? I've been digging through threads looking for one, and I can't find an official thread for one. There's one called "Market Access" (sorry, I don't have enough posts to include an outside link here) that will apparently do it, but I'm hesitant to install something from a random link.

Try to add money to your Google prepaid card. It did not work for me, even if my Canadian Visa has a US billing address. I think it detects the institution who released the card and blocks it. I purchased my Nexus directly from Google Play, using the same card. From what I heard, they detect also if your phone is rooted or non-stock ROM:
We strongly discourage gaining system-level "root" access to your phone if you plan to use Google Wallet. We are unable to support devices with unauthorized operating systems as the security layers of the device may be limited.

Do you really think Google is that stupid to allow adding a credit card with a fake address like others are trying to do?
Anyways, I have a Canadian credit card with an official US billing address on it. Guess what, Wallet does not work at all on Bell. Even if I put my T-Mobile SIM card on the phone, I'm pretty sure it will not work also with a Canadian card as the financial institution is not registered into Google's Money Network.
We have to wait like every one else... until Google decides to open Wallet in Canada, if it will.
At the rate they open products in Canada, we should have it enabled in about 10 years.
Ya I agree. Its stupid. Sorry Google but USA isn't the only country in the world. This the usa likes to think so. Lol

[Q] Kindle fire HD 4G Unlocked or locked ?

Hi everybody ,
I'v decided to buy a new KFHD 4G LTE from Amazon and take it with myself to Europe(UK) and use it there.unfortunately I don't know if it locked to AT&T or not ,because my own sim cards using in UK are Orange and 3 .
I searched in amazon forum and found they said it is locked to AT&T but some guys mentioned it is unlocked.I'm completely confused .
can anybody help me for this subject ?
by the way if this tablet is locked ,is there any method for unlocking ?
Thanks
Nobody can help me ?

Well, in the Amazon reviews there are quite a few folks talking about using it overseas. The SIM isn't the problem, it's not locked and it works fine as long as your carrier has compatible technology. (Note: The ones that AT&T is selling directly with a contract and a subsidy are probably locked.)
I bought mine at a local retailer (Microcenter), and simply inserted the SIM from my carrier (A T-Mobile reseller) and changed the APN settings and that was pretty much that.
As I said above though, there IS a problem using it overseas - if Amazon doesn't sell Apps and Content in your country, and they won't sell it to you on the HD. The work around is to purchase VPN services from a US provider. I haven't looked into whether VPN is included in the stock ROM or whether it can be added later.
According to the discussions on Amazon, you CAN reconfigure it to work there. So, spend a little time with Google and the Amazon web site and you should find useful information on what's needed.
