[request]Searching a HowTo for Skinning Swype - Defy General

Hi,
Today my Defy arrived
Now I have read many threads about the phone and the firmware, but soneones making me confused and other ones doesnt answer my questtions.
So, what I want to know is:
1. Wich is the really latest firmware for the Defy with the red lense? Done
2. when Im going to install CM7, must be flashed an stock froyo rom before? Done
3. because swype is preinstalled in the firmware, how can i update it to the latest version? Done
4. how can i make my own swype theme?
I think thats all (for now )
Greetings

I'll only answer to the ones that I know the answer...
2. The instructions say that you should. Also, from what I read, every tutorial says that you should go to stock. Also, a wipe could be advisable (not to inherit problems and bad settings from the previous ROM)
3. You can get it from the official site. As far as I've noticed CM7 doesn't come with Swype.
Hopefully someone else answers the other two questions.
Have a nice day!

And I'll take the opportunity to ask a few somewhat related noobie questions:

I've seen a few mentions of different lens colours. What is this? (link to explanation is fine) ETA: Found it myself. Really stupid to ask. Bottom line ATM seems to be that for phones recently manufactured the lens colour is not a reliable indicator of camera module used.

Doesn't this mean that you don't need to do anything special (maybe wipe everything, but maybe not that important?) when you flash a new ROM into the phone for the first time?
Or would you still need to first flash a plain stock ROM if your phone came with some telco-provided crappy stuff in the ROM, before flashing a custom ROM?
(Purely hypothetical question for me.)

Bumping this, because I am getting to closer to actually start rooting around (hah!) in the innards of my phone, and I keep wondering about this:

So do I need to flash _another_ stock ROM before I switch to cyanogen or whatever, if my phone is a virgin that came with the stock nordic rom (moto_version.34.177.5.MB525.retail.en.ND/jorem_U3_3.4.2_177-5)?
It somehow seems redundant to me to flash another stock to my phone when I already have a stock froyo (without blur even) on it.
BTW, given the focus of this forum you are all being very very kind to us noobs. Upthread I asked a really really really stupid question (I'll see if I can edit out), and nobody threw rocks at me .
I am still wondering though whether anyone can recommend an alternative forum more suited to Really Basic Questions?

Just root, install second init for recovery, then flash cyanogen...
If you click devices at their website, you can grab the latest nightly ROM, and you will also find the wiki, which has a step by step on how to do everything.
It's really simple, just keep glued too the instructions.
Good luck

It is recommended as a precaution for a failsafe install but you can install CM7 on any stock 2.2 or above rom.

BTW, it would be good if you'd change the topic back, or put the old topic in parenthesis to the new one or something. Something like
[request]Swype-skinning ([solved]stock froyo first & red lens latest)
might be good
I was wondering why I was subscribed to a thread about swype-skinning, as it couldn't be further from my interests, but never mind that - there's good info in this thread not related to swype.

Exactly. I was confused, and for an instant, lost in space.. Lol
You big thread hooligan, Mr gentleman
Edit:
To answer your question,
You should probably check with Swype to see if skinning is even capable with their app... (or potentially even allowed)
To my knowledge, skinning Swype is uncharted territory...the app is in beta still.
Some advanced knowledge of Android would be required to hack, disassemble, and recompile any themes for it.

Custom ROMs

When rooting and flashing custom roms, is there any roms which makes your phone work just the same way as it did before? I mean, does all the roms have support for camera(pictures and filming movies), sync (facebook, twitter, email), and so on?
Will I be able to use my phone as I did with the stock rom I guess the question is.
Getting more and more tempted...

yes of course, especially if you want to use back HTC sense, then flash the sense-based rom.
Android Revolution HD is recommended by me
The first answer I have... is you want exactly the same phone you have... keep your rom
Normally in most of the build thread the dev list what is working and what is not.
So read the first post you'll know.
Take also into account (and do it anyway) that you better backup your staff before testing any build. CWM give you the ability to backup everything. That's great for testing new builds.
General advice: never trust an electronic device!!!! Backup is the rule. One day or another you will loose your data (wrong manipulation, memory corruption...).

I've read more about it now and found a genius guide in sweedish (I'm norwegian so that's pretty close, haha) and now I'm quite sure I will have to give RHD a go.
But what about the phone's language? All over I mean, in the menus and everything. Will I get a english phone after flashing custom ROM's, or can I just change the language settings ... ?

Most (if not all) roms based on WWE stock roms have european languages. (At least swedish and norwegian)
peace!
The rom you were thinking of trying definitely has norwegian. Tried it a few days ago with swedish.
Great I can't sit on my hands anymore... *jumps into it* Wish me luck! I hope everything goes the way it's supposed to. I've used Visionary and Titanium Backup to freeze some apps, but that is as far as I've gone... But seems like that wasn't quite enough, if I can get more benefits out of the great phone, I want them
Will the facebook/gmail sync work with RHD? It doesnt say anything about it in the thread. What about the themes for the ROM? They wont override any language-settings or what?
Done! Now I will have to seriously clean up my SD card, as I did double backups of everything, including the stock rom, nandroid backup(?), app, system/settings backup in titanium backup. And I have to check if I will have to install a new radio.
I did. *installs new radio*

I am thinking about getting the Sprint version of this: the XPRT. I have had an EVO for a year now, but the big screen/virtual keyboad is just not ideal for business use, which is all I really use my phone for.
That being said, I love custom ROM's. I noticed the lack of threads on the XPRT (which is really just the Droid Pro).
Any idea of this procedure for installing CM7 will work for the XPRT?

well it would probably work the same for you but you probably need to change it so it will work with sprint cause we are both on CDMA but GSM and the other one is for sure not working so no global use for now

Thanks for the info. The differences in network might be a problem, especially for global use. Any ideas on how to address this?
I bought an XPRT today. I already have it rooted. Love the physical keyboard. But I already miss custom roms.
Is there a way to return to stock from CM7?
No clue how to make it work on sprint I will ask around and we'll I heard if you made a backup before going to cm7 you can do that
But if your to scared to do it or did not you can just sbf like you did to get cm7
Edit: ok so from what i hear your xprt should work just fine with this rom no changes needed but with no sbf file for it there would be no turning back if you make a mistake or something so you would be best off to wait till a sbf comes out for it

I am curioius though if you can use Droid Pro sbf on XPRT. Has anyone tried it?

I'm pretty sure you can't use our sbf and from what im hearing now it's probably best if you stay away from the rom for now

For the time being, having it rooted and using a custom launcher is working well for me.

[Q] ICS on A101 AS WELL ?

Hello guys,
I'm new to this forum but I read it from time to time since a few months.
I own an Iconia Tab A101 that I already rooted and so far I haven't received the OTA update toward ICS probably beacuse I used a Stock Rom from Vache which is not a full stock rom.
I already found few ICS ROMs but as I use this tablet for my job, I don't want to mess up with it. So far it dosen't say it would work with an Iconia A101, but only a A100. Did anyone already tried it on the A101 ? (I can't aford to lose my 3G conection/driver as I use it everyday to send my jobs forms)
Is there any way I could upgrade toward ICS without losing my applications and datas ? (I can handle the root and adhoc/wpasuplicant issue later..)
I wish I could install/use Nandroid to get a full backup of my tablet before just in case.... Would you advise me to use that application ? How do I do that ?
I alreadytried to install CWM but failed to it. I probably did something wrong or in the wrong order.
Anyway thanks for your help ! I love this forum.
Best regards
Fabien

Acer didn't release ICS for A101 yet, so it's normal that you didn't receive OTA upgrade.
There is a leak of an old ICS build for A101 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25561591&postcount=6
I'm running it and it works fine. I just needed to delete and recreate APN, as the migrated one was disabled for some reason.
(P.S. You need to install all four update.zip from the archive in order. These are incremental and you cannot skip any.)
Thank you leomatt & smokku for you quick and clear answers. That's the spirit!
Thanks again,
Adrian
Thank you so much ! It worked like a charm.
Next step will be root (again), and adhoc support.
This may help:
1.Load Update1.zip onta a SD card. Rename it Update.zip. THIS IS IMPORTANT!
2. Press POWER and VOL- (the top vol button) and flash the ROM. The reboot will hang. Just power off and continue.
3. Repeat for the remaining updates, one at a time.
4. The final reboot will work and the ROM will be flashed. If error messages are encountered or constant rebooting is experienced, do a factory restart.
This worked for me and restored my Acer back to A101. (I had loaded ICS for A100 and lost 3g...I can't help fiddling with things I don't understand........

Hey. No need to thank me for telling you it even existed in the first place, that's perfectly OK.
For someone so utterly incapable of finding something so simple (seriously, third hit on a search), I suggest you don't even THINK about flashing it; you'll brick your tab.
Someday you'll get, that this forum is about people helping each other, not feeling superior to others.

i about an OFFICIAL rom, not a stock rom modified, or a leaked one, etc..
It would be great if you guys could CLEARLY say what is made for ?
If it's for A100, its for A100, A101 for A101, etc... as well as for which kind of rom it is made for, etc ?
For someone who is used to it, it's easy ! However, even for a newbie there is nothing about Android terminology ! The poor guy is lost and nothing makes sense to him/her.
For example : ROM means Read Only Memory (as oposed to Ram which is Random Access Memory (volatile memory) ) right !!!
Well if the ROM is the operating system, then you don't only read it as you also write in it and can replace its content as well ! However, Android (the os) is a ROM !! Even for someone coming from the IT world, it's kind of confusing ! ;-)
By the way, it says not to install Busybox, but I had to, after to fix some apps.
The wpa_suplicant file however doesn't fix the adhoc issue so far.
I'll get back to the old file in the meantime.

I didn't insult anyone, but I can, if you like.

What I would like is a simple ICS rom, but there are none!

Yep.
I just wish there was stock ICS for the HOV. Vanilla ics rom is close but it still has sense left over.
cm9 is far too unstable, and all my attempts at flashing various roms of JB are instable/not daily driver ready.
There don't seem to be any truly usable roms for this device. Stock sense is the only build in which everything works.
It's either one thing or another. If the camcorder works, the build might not work with simple apps like voxer. If voxer works, then mms won't work. If JB runs perfectly stable, then maybe the camcorder doesn't work. Does a rom that works without bugs like this exist? Here are a list of things I would need in a daily driver rom:
1. Camcorder- I'm a skater and I like to film fun edits of me and my hoodrat friends doing hoodrat things on our skates.
2. MMS - Such a simple necessity.
3. App compatibility -It drives me crazy when my important apps like voxer, instagram, facebook, and launchers lag badly or crash every time I open them
4. LAG - this is why I can't upgrade to JB, I thought provision Rom was AMAZING until I started using my apps (see #3)
5. Simple Multitasking
6. Random reboots - doesn't bother me too much but I could see it happening in some situation where I would need the phone immediately and have to try and explain to someone that "Herp, muh super custom droid phone likes to reboot so you'll just have to wait."
So far the only thing I can think of doing is building a stock ics rom (which I have no idea how to do). Any tips, first timer here.
Right now I just flashed back to stock and am going to run the de-sense tool. Why must OEMs ruin everything we love?
I hate to complain like this and I'm very glad there are devs working on the problems I describe. I guess I'm just venting my frustration. I love this phone but I have spent so much time trying to get a stock android experience that works. I would just buy galaxy nexus or an S3 but I'm a college and pre-paid cheap phones are the only way to fly right now, man. Sorry to sound so negative throughout the post but these are simply my observations in contrast with my needs and wants.
BTW first post on here. Don't hate me plz.

ok thanks! The only cm9 I could find was on the cdma dev forum and it said a number of things including the camcorder didn't work.
...and then I googled it and found exactly what I needed. Flashing now. We'll see how this works. Was there something I'm missing? I looked at this one [CDMA/PRIMOC][ROM] Unofficial CM9 for PrimoC Beta
480p video recording kind of suck but it'll have to do I guess.
Before u go knocking on peoples stuff how about u make a effort to fix it ur self and u can't say well I don't know how. Well sir u know that little company that bought android os yea sell they Also have a easy to use search bar and so does this little site u are on
And last how about u try and talk to the developers by posting in threads and asking if thus is a problem or even try p.m the developers the problem and I know that for sure u never messeaged me about a application messing up on our provisions rom

Don't know about comatibility/stability. Using CM10 from Lloir and works flawless for me, and yes, I'm using mms, camcorder, apps of a wide range, and yes, this is my primer and only phone, so I can say that it is stable too. Only camcorder problem I found that autofocus is somehow misbehaving in video recording.
Full wipe is essential for stability if you flash a rom that is based on something else, than the last one you used. I even erase sometimes the sdcards android and secure partitions if must. I tried Lloir's slimbean just this morning and seems promising enough, really thinking about to change to that rom permanently.
Full wipe means:
Factory reset (this will delete cache and dalvik cache - this will also remove the .android_secure folder)
Wipe system
Flash rom
Flash the correct kernel in bootloader
Reboot your phone
Voila, rom without any issues at all!
Don't tell me you did all these and you still have problems with JB and other custom roms. I just don't buy it. Everyone here that uses a custom rom are so enthusiastic about them, they don't even wanna get back on sense. I am having Paranoid Android on my One V from the moment I started making the rom for us, since August. From then onwards, I've only used this rom. I don't think that there are any kind of instability with it, because I test my roms before releasing them so if it was unstable, why should've I used it for more than 4 months now?

1. I do all those. This is is my third android device. I used to have a galaxy tab 2 rom'd with cm10 and it was awesome. But even it had some problems with app compatibility. I got my learning in on that device. I nearly bricked it 3-4 times haha.
2. We use our phones differently. There are probably a ton of apps I use and a ton you don't. I know for sure that draw something is incompatible with JB itself.
I'll probably flash PA soon if some issues pop up with the cm9 build I'm using now.
Draw something is compatible with jellybean no doubt since I installed it on my HOV and it works.

[Q] New G3 owner with some questions.

I checked several of the threads in the various subforums but since I am currently really busy (have the phone for 3 weeks and I am not using it cause had no time to check XDA ) if you are kind enough I have some questions that spending more time in the threads would probably answer themselves but alas...
A: If I root the G3 can I bring it back to stock without any indication it got rooted (I heard some phones have special logs that show if a phone has been rooted that survive the various flashes), in case I need to send it for service?
B: Should I go with the root method shown on XDA TV (which doesn't show how to install a custom recovery) or one of the one click auto batch scripts?
C: I think generally this question is not allowed cause it can lead to flame but which ROM would you recommend I try first? I need just a clean, smooth running ROM. Disclaimer: Avoid arguing with other users if you disagree with something they said, just state the ROM and if you want your reason for picking it and I will scroll through them and decide.
Much obliged if you care to answer them and apologies to mods if this breaks any rules.

A: You can always go back to stock using LG flash tool with no evidence of rooting nor like samsung's knox
B: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3072767
C: I personally use resurrection remix rom based on CM12 due to performance but if you want fully working G3 with no bugs at all I recommend my favorite rom CupaChups 4.2. Super fast stock base rom with some extra features.
P.S. I recommend you to instal Kernel Adiutor from the play store after you root your G3 and change the governor from default Interactive to Conservative. Cos from some unknown reasons the Interactive governor is bugged on all G3 and changing that will highly increase your performance speed and feel. This works with base and aosp roms also.
Hope this helps
via LG G3 @ Resurrection Remix
Thank you, is there a problem if the phone is already on stock 5.0? Can I still root it with the same methods or must I restore it to 4.4.x? (A simple restore to factory blabla does it?)
Cheers

If you have a look around there's a one click method that works for all G3 variants regardless of software version that is here on the forums. You can use that, download the zip for your desired custom rom, install a custom recovery and then flash the ROM and you should be good to go. There's plenty of guides for you to use, and each custom rom thread should have it's own installation guide
