[Q] USB attached but can't mount SD card - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I connect the phone to USB. Tried bot MSC and MT modes but the phone (and SD card) is never shown on my MAC.
Also this means I can't sync iTunes via doubleTwist (airSync) doesn't work eather.
I think this is linked to my last update with latest kernel.
Cheers
p.s. my pone is rooted and unlocked

Ya there are USB problems with 2.3.4 and doomlords kernel (since hes going off the old sources) if thats what youre running

Yep so what should I do?
I really need to be able to connect via USB to sync my music library among other things.
How do I reverse this?

Flash the original kernel.sin back in fastboot mode. Root will remain and all the bugs like no usb mass storage and vibration are fixed.

Can you point me to where I can find the original kernel? Still latest FW?

[Q] HTC Desire HD Charging with USB but no USB Connection

As my topic says, when plugging in the USB to the computer the phone starts charging, but no USB connection to the actual computer. I tried with debugging on and off, tried with several ROMs but nothing changes it.
I tried to connect another phone thorugh the cable and that works fine so i know its not the cable thats the problem.
The version im running now:
Baseband version: 12.54.60.25P_26.09.04.11_M2
Kernel Version:2.6.32.39-cyanogenmod-g99f1050
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.0.3.DesireHD
Anyone got any idea and wanna help me?
goto setting>Connect to PC> and make sure "Ask Me" is ticked.
Im guessing that it doesnt ask you what you want to do and the phone by default charges i.e "Charge Only"

Do you not even get the icons in the notification bar?
If you're using Windows, have you got the drivers installed (sorry, I don't use windoze so I am unsure if you need them for this but seems to be a common issue)?

Well i have tried both doing "adb shell" with debugging on and then it says "Device not found", and tried to mount is as an USB disk to the computer and nothing happens.

I get the USB icon in the notification bar, but thats all. Yes, i have tried both with windows drivers and without (Cause it wanna install the drivers when they arent there), but nothing happens either way.
I even tried the phone to another computer and its the same there.. no reaction, so i think it´s something in the phone or kernel?
You could try reflashing the ROM without a full wipe (wipe Cache though). I doubt it's an inherent bug with ROM / Kernel otherwise there would be a flood of similar posts (checked nightlies as well).
I have already tried that with 3 different roms and its the same with all 3 roms

So that rules out problems with ROM or Kernel.
Next, need to rule out PC. Have you got another PC or laptop you can try?
Have you tried different USB ports (if using front ones, use back or any others that are on a different MB header).
Forgot to ask, when you say you tried mounting as USB Disk, do you mean you do get the option if you press the Charge Only icon in the notification bar of the phone?
And also, to rule out the SD card, do you have a card reader you can try it with?

Yes.. thats how i tried to mount it as an usb disk... i have tried mounting it in Clockwork Recovery Mod aswell... nothing there either :/
Not looking good!!
Last hope then is that it's a problem with the sdcard itself. Do you have a card reader on any of your pc's / laptop you can try?
Nope, no card reader. But i can send stuff to the phones sd card through wifi using myphoneexplorer
How can i install stock rom and kernel through clockwork? Or any way without having usb connection?

Unless the ROM you want is listed in ROM Manager and the Kernel in Kernel Manager (neither of which are fantastically up to date) then you will need to either find another way to get them on your SDCard or visit the the XDA site in a browser or XDA App, find the files you want and download them directly to your phone via the ether. You should then move them to the root of the sdcard and use Terminal Emulator to check the MD5SUM of the file before flashing.
well.. getting the files to the sd card is no big problem using myphoneexplorer over the wifi at home. but where can i find the stock rom with any mods that i can put on the sd and flash with clockwork mod?

Which stock ROM are you looking for? If it's the stock HTC OTA Gingerbread one them here - http://www.iloveabath.co.uk/index.php?dir=RUUs/
(Thanks go to @andyharney for that).
You mention stock with mods? Could you expand on that one and I'll get yo a link to the most appropriate ROM that suits?
Off topic: MyPhoneExplorer is great. Been using it since my early Sony Ericsson days - the original phone it was designed for, I believe.

There's a PD98IMG version of an UNROOTED (you will lose root again) the Gingerbread ROM, give me a few minutes and I'll see if I can find it.
[EDIT] Sorry, a PD98IMG will allow you to copy to sdcard root, reboot into Bootloader and it will flash automatically.
[EDIT 2] - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13329691&postcount=96
They're Megaupload links though but you should be able to access them in browser. Take first link, rename it to PD98IMG.zip

The way connecting USB storages to PC on Stock FC22

The issue in here is resolved. So, if you wonder how to connect phone's USB storages into PC, please check the update 3 section in below.
If you are a user of USB utilities, stay away from FC22.
I'm not sure if this is an intended directional change from Samsung or if this function is missed by mistakes, but on FC22, I do not see the Settings > More... > USB utilities. I saw it until FC18 and it's not in FC22.
So, if you use your internal or external sdcard thru this tool, this would be a reason why you stay away from this rom until it's fixed -> Not valid any more
Now I moved back to FC18 from FC22 because I'm a kind of heavy user of this tool because it's really faster than any other method whenever I transfer the data between sdcards and my pc.
Maybe my eyes are wrong but I tried to find this function from everywhere in the settings but couldn't find. If someone find this function, please direct me to the right place.
Tweaked Calk's FC18 Rom is working fine (almost no defects) except the way entering the ##debug# mode. I'm still don't know how I can get the 'lock code' on ICS version (not MSL code).
(attached screenshots: first - from fc22, second - from fc18)
Now I'm sitting back and waiting for next build....
[Update1]
I've applied Fc22 Kernel and modem upon Calk's Tweaked FC18. - USB Utilities is still there.
Next update would be - factory reset and clean install FC22. Will follow up shortly
[Update 2]
Because I factory-reset my phone, it's taking longer than before to update. I'll post the screen shot in few minutes but Samsung replaced the USB utilities to Kies via Wi-Fi.
I've seen that Samsung in Korea, they are upgrading customer's phone thru visiting customer center or via 'Kies via Wi-Fi'. Are they following the same steps in here?
Because I installed Stock FC22, I ran Calk's Bare Rom Converter and it includes the scripts removing Kies APKs. I think that's the reason why it's not showing Kies via Wi-Fi (default in Stock FC22 instead of USB Utilities).
[Update 3]
Thanks to Dchibro, mdsevol and kali323
I don't need to test it any more. On FC22, the way phone communicate with PC has been changed a little. Usb utilities on the settings is removed and replaced with Kies via Wi-Fi.
So, to make the PC recognize the phone's usb storages, go to Settings > {} Developer options > turn off USB debugging > connect your USB cable
Another way connecting USB storages to PC (big thanks to elliwigy)
I pull status bar down and click the USB notification then turn USB mode on and it connects to PC for file transfer..
Once USB cable is connected, PC will recognize your internal and external sdcard.
I think this way is better than before and it would be one of the reason why I'm moving forward.

Ok. Let me try to load fc22 kernel and modem on my current fc18 rom and check if it's still there. If it's there, then it's not the kernel or modem issue. I need to factory reset and reinstall the fc22 rom (I've already did that) and check again.

Does enabling USB debugging turn off MTP and make USB mass the default like it does on the GB ROM? I'm guessing no but I thought I'd ask.

Actually, by default, the way USB storage works in FC22 hasn't changed, it still defaults to MTP mode and is as annoying as ever, plus they removed the USB Utilities option in menu->settings->more so you can't manually enable it anymore.
The reason you got the impression it changed is because Calk modified a property in /default.prop (in the kernel he bundles with FC22) which controls how the USB storage is configured, so if you used his modified kernel to install FC22, the USB mode will be changed from MTP mode to Mass Storage mode. Once you have USB Mass Storage mode configured, it will be stored persistently in your Android User Data, so should you change kernels in the future, to one which doesn't have the change Calk made, USB Mass Storage mode will remain. The only ways it would get reset if if you wiped your Android User Data AND switched to a kernel which didn't have USB Mass Storage mode enabled in /default.prop
I have added a solution to the ICS USB Mass Storage annoyance to the Auto Root package. This will allow you to manually choose USB Mass Storage Mode (ie GB USB Storage behavior) for theoretically any ICS release, though I only tested it for FC22. Use Option E (Extra Options) followed by "Enable ICS USB Mass Storage Mode". This option will be stored persistently in your Android User Data, so it only needs to be done once (or whenever you reset your Android User Data)
Full writeup is here (and also in the FAQ of the Auto Root sticky)
What happened to USB Storage in ICS, how do I get the old GB behavior back?

The problem is that we are seeing lots of build every daily basis but there's no additional information about the new build. Only the way we would know the changes is through our own test. In here, we are being used as kind of testers even we are donating our own time for free. If someone who provide the source to our forum, if they have any kind of basic ettiquette, please provide the basic information regarding the change also. That will save lots of our time and prevent us from misleading and posting wrong information. But that would be one of their intention though.
Personally I want to add my thanks to sfhub for his kind explanation about what's going on and what's happening.

My phone will charge from the wall socket but I'm not getting any notifications when I attach it to my netbook. It fails to install the MTP drivers as well. I've had to resort to using a USB MicroSD adaptor when I need to copy files over but its starting to become annoying now.
Anyone have any idea how to get the USB functionality back to my device?
i would like to know too. I just flashed doomkernal and i cant get wifi to work, (even after enabling wifi in the build.prop) and it fails to install drivers when i connect it to my computer, i cannot enter mass storage mode.

trouble with my OTG cable

Hi people
I have the galaxy s2 gt-i9100 and i recently bought the OTG cable
when i plug it in it display'sUSB host cable connected)
but when i try to plug in any thing it does not work
for example: Flash memory, keybored, ps3 controller.
can any body tell what is the problem??
P.S. I am using gingerbread 2.3.3 the original Rom
do i need a specific Rom to use it??
Aint no body can help me ???
which rom are you on ?
and try opening dialer ..
enter *#7284#
select
"UART MODEM" and select "USB PDA n restart
Stock Samsung roms are pretty useless for OTG cables, at best you get FAT formatted flash drives and thats about it. You will have to use a custom kernel if you want things like xbox joypads, keyboard etc.
Below are the steps I used to get things like mouse, usb joypads (i use wireless xbox), wii mote etc working properly on my S2.
1. Update to ICS, use Kies for this.
2. Root you phone. For rooting I used the following method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
Rooting
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
- SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard or external SD
Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Rooted
Unroot
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
- SU-Uninstaller-Signed.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard
Choose and Install SU-Uninstaller-Signed.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Unrooted
Main reason I used this method is that it doesn't change the recovery console keeping it on stock which helps if you ever had to return phone for repair. This method essential temp loads up a custom recovery console (CWM), roots the phone and once rebooted the stock console is loaded. Another plus point is that it really is stupidly easy to install
3. Install ktool from the market. (Root and superuser app is required for this tool to run)
4. Use ktool to backup current kernel. Not essential but handy if you want to go back to stock.
5. Flash new kernel using ktool
The kernel I used is Dorimanx's from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1617219 . Note just exact the downloaded zip file and you need the file zImage from the boot folder. This must be placed in the root of your sdcard (phone memory). If following above steps this will overwrite your backed up kernel so make sure you backup your err backup
The process of backing up and flashing a new kernel takes like a whole 10 seconds. Once done simply reboot your phone. All being well you will see the Dorimanx's splash screen and the phone will boot as normal. Checking in the Setting > About Phone under kernel you should see something like "3.1.0-rc8-Siyah-Dorimanx-v5.83-B6-SGII-PWR-CORE" as an example (latest Dorimanx) showing this the new kernel is infact been used.
Then ofcourse if you want to test it plug in a usb device like a mouse for example.
If you want to return to 100% stock.
1. Use ktool to flash your backed up backup zImage
2. Follow the instructions above to unroot.
I have just gone through all the steps as I was writing this to confirm it all works fine.
ok Thank u
I'll try to do what i understood

99.9% stock kernels don't allow usb host?
Stock kernels do allow USB host but support less number of devices than custom kernels. Stock supports fat32 drives, mouse and keyboard atleast. NTFS drives, game controllers are not supported OOTB by stock kernel.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
What I meant to say was 99.9% dont support anything on the usb otg and not host. Other than fat32 UFDs, only a small percentage will allow keyboards and mice on stock (and reading this forums show its a very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very small percentage (the power of a million))
I was one of these users. Using o2 i9100p phone nothing worked, best I managed for external connectivity was a 16Gb fat32 ufd and a MS BT media keyboard.
Soon as I changed to a custom kernel it allowed me to use the following (on top of the above)
Wired Mouse
Wired Keyboard
Wireless xbox 360 joypad (using USB/BT Joy Center)
Wired xbox joypad (using USB/BT Joy Center)
Wiimote & nunchuck (some free wii mote app from store)
And just tested now I have gone back to stock kernel and sure enough non of the above work anymore (including mouse/keyboard)

[Q] Why won't Note 2 connect to PC after going into Download Mode?

I have installed the Samsung usb drivers several times. Even tried the latest drivers. My computer can see the phone just fine until I put it into Download Mode and connect the usb cable. Then it sees nothing!
I have a dual boot Win 7 64 bit system, and I have installed the drivers on both partitions with the same results. I've rebooted the computer and the phone many times as well, but it does not work.

simple MTP is working well?
What is MTP? Does that mean mount the phone?
I can connect the phone to my computer anytime and see it just fine. I see the internal storage and also the SD card.
MTP - Media Transfer Protocol
That standard Phone to PC mode you can select after plugging it in.
Do you have USB debugging selected in the developer options menu?
Yes debugging is on. And I can normally transfer files. I've copied tons of music and a few movies.
I've found that these phones just don't get along well with some computers, and their usb connectivity is very inconsistent between phones. I have 2 GS3's and a Note 2. One my home laptop, one of the GS3's works fine, while the other will rarely even be recognized unless I swap the plug to another port a few times. After it's recognized, it frequently stalls on file transfers, and it crashed trying to update to JB. The Note 2 always is recognized, but similarly, large file transfers fail.
All three of these phones work flawlessly when connected to my work computer, using the same cable. I had a Focus that behaved similarly, so I think it's a Samsung issue. I've never had this problem with other brands.

By download mode I assume you are trying to flash something in ODIN, correct ? If yes, then make sure you are using the USB the phone came with. If you are not seeing a COM reading on ODIN, try a different USB port on the PC/Laptop. I know my USB 3.0 port always gives me problems with connectivity to bootloaders and such. Attached is a pic of what the phone looks like in download mode and what ODIN should show when it recognizes the phone. Hope this helps.

I finally did get it to work on a different computer. Yes, I was trying to root using the Toolkit, and when it got to ODIN it could not see the phone when it booted into download mode.
When the Toolkit did boot it into Download mode though, it did not show that small text in the upper/left corner on the phone screen. I could only get that text when I booted manually into Download mode. I'm not sure what the difference is....
So far, I have it rooted and am going to try and flash the NOTEorious Prime ROM. It says to backup my APNs first, which I did with APN Backup & Restore app. But it cannot restore them in JB 4.1. I read somewhere to tell Titanium Backup to make APN B&R a 'System App', which I did, but that still will not restore APNs. So, now I am wondering that if I installed the NOTEorious Prime ROM, will that 'let me' restore APNs? Or since it is JB it won't still..
Thanks for the reply BTW..
May be you can use the old fashioned way. ..use a pen and paper to write the apn and details somewhere and if you lose them on the rom. ..you can enter them manually
handwritten from my note 2 (N7100)
I still find MTP a less than optimal solution, coming from HTC devices which are recognized as external drives when connected.
Guys, Please remember that MTP is only applicable when the device is switched on. This is for internal "Virtual SdCard" and external Sd Card.
Download mode opens up the other storage on the device, "mmcblk0p*" for flashing reasons with Odin.
