[Q][REQ] About Wifi Tether possibilities/enhancements - Epic 4G Apps

I was wondering if it's possible to create an app or integrate into wifi tether, for a user to connect to your wifi tether and once they connect they will be redirected to a link you prefer. Would be beneficial for an area which doesn't have open wifi networks (like where I'm at) and once other people connect to the users wifi tether, It could direct them to the hosts site as advertisement (android apps, products, etc..). Before they can surf the net.

That's a neet idea

Do you think it's possible?

I don't see why not. But I'm not an android programer.
Can you use a DD-WRT'ed router? I bet you could use a router to do what your trying to do

That's a good idea. Except our phones get hot when just we tether alone, if you were going to have lots of users connect to it, you'd be frying eggs on your epic in no time.

It's definitely possible. How, i havent a clue...

how to dial into my home broadband.

I have a laptop at home on comcast broad band. I also have a phoneline going into the laptop. I've already configured vista dial in server on the laptop. I cannot make my unlocked dash to use the dialup feature to dial. I know im supposed to setup the DUN feature then launch explorer but when i do that it doesnt dial out.
If i can achieve this, will ATT charge me for the data im using?
I know i havent given all the details of my setup, please ask away.
No, all you have to do is plug your phone into your computer through usb and bam... you will have the internet on your phone too...
Thanks but thats not what im trying to do. WHat im trying to do is to dial into my broadband when im AWAY from home. Obviously if i want to surf from home i can use my pc, use my wifi on my dash or do what u described.
dont all answer at once! does anyone have a clue how to do this
When you say dial-in, are you trying to access services on your pc? Of you're trying to use your PC as a radius server all you're going to get is 9.6kbps, way slower than edge.
i dont know what a radius server is. Im trying to just dial-in to my pc to use the broadband internet. If i use edge it will cost me. dont want to use edge
it doesnt work that way.
A radius server is what authenticates when you dial in via dial-up. If you dial in via dial up, edge or wifi, you're going to be limited by the bandwidth of the connection you're using to connect to your broadband from. If you're connected at dial-up (9.6kbps) all you're going to get is 9.6Kbps regardless of what you're connecting to. If you used edge all you would get is about 200kbps. If you used wi-fi you'd be limited by the aomount of bandwidth provided by the ISP. Wi-Fi is the way to go but any other connections aren't going to give you broadband speed when the total throughput for each of the methods aside from wi-fi are way lower.
The pipe has to be big at both ends for this to work, if the pipe is smaller on one end then all traffic will be sent out at the smaller pipes bandwidth.
ahh very well explained. It can be done by setting up a radius server but the through put will be like waiting for brittany spears to stop drinking?

Connect to Ad Hoc without internet through Wifi

Hi everyone!
I'm having kind of a special problem.
I'm an electro acoustic musician and finds the Desire a lot of fun.
My new project is to use its accelerometer etc and for that I need to connect it to my Mac running OSX 10.6.5.
The issue I'm having is that my network (campus ish) won't allow me to open any ports. I don't think it's a good idea to hack it, so my next idea is to create a network between my Mac and my Desire. This network won't have access to the internet.
It also has to be via Wifi since the app I'm using only allows communication through wifi and my java skills aren't good enough to edit the apk.
I therefore run Oxygen 1.0 (GREAT rom btw) which is supposed to accept ad-hoc, and my computers own network does show up when i browse it in my phone.
The problem is that it dosn't connect since it isn't given an ip. I imagine there has to be a solution to this and I'm just not seeing it. I'm also thinking it could be an OSX issue and not really a question for this forum, but I'm pretty sure it should be possible to just make the phone not requesting an internet ip.
I've tried to set a static IP but this won't work ether.
Does anyone have a clue on how to do? I'm quite desperate really. Been searching for a solution online for quite some time and I haven't found the right one. Probably because most people using ad-hoc want it's phone to connect to the internet and therefore not having my kind of trouble. Unfortunately I have no way of connecting my computer to the router with wire since the router is about 400 meters away. Once of corse, but i really need a wireless solution in the long run.
Thanks!
Christopher

Evo teathering to xbox

My house flooded so I had to move my xbox and its not with the router any more, is there any way I can target it to my xbox? I'm running virus rom anthrax series and stock usb and wifi tether are unlocked. Any ideas?

with a computer you can, plug xbox into the computer and get the computer connected to the internet through the phone then in network connection bridge the two connections, otherwise without a wifi adapter on your xbox you can't
If you tether through your EVO via WiFi Hotspot, you can. Note that your ping time will be horrendous, you will never be host, and people will hate you for having such a laggy connection and slowing down the entire game.

with your xbox connected to pc and pc connected to internet open your network connections, highlight both and right click on the wifi one and chose bridge connections
or you can just right click on the wifi one and in properties I think there is share internet option
Ive used the 3G hotspot to wifi tether to my xbox. It wasnt THAT bad. Got a 3 bar most the time in call of duty 4.

For all to read:
Any device that has a wireless adapter that can pick up WIFI signal can use your phones Tethering abilities. So if you have the wireless adapter for your Xbox 360, then yes, you can tether your phones internet and use that as your connection. Just go about it just like you would if you were searching for a routers connection. Note that the ping time will be horrendous. Normal ping times for a 1MB/S download speed is about 30-60ms on a DSL or cable internet connection. Through your phones 3g you are looking at close to a 150ms ping or probably more depending on the signal strength of your phone. I personally have never tried to use my phones internet with Xbox live but going from a generalization in the gaming world, you want to have the lowest ping time possible.(i.e. if your in a game such as Call of Duty and your ping time is terrible and you encounter an enemy, he can actually walk around the corner of a building and see you before you get the chance to shoot him and shoot you first)
But if you want to try it out and see how it is:
Tether your internet to your laptop.
Run a Cat-5 cable from your laptop to your xbox.
Go into your network manager in your computer and share the internet connection.

[Q] Intenet Connection in a Non-Wireless/Non Data Environment?

I work in a place where there is no wireless connection for my Epic and very bad data reception - however, there have been times when I need to get online with my EPIC and can't get a signal strong enough to support it -
is there something I can do to share my laptops connection thru my office's network? I wasn't sure if I could wirelessly or with wire tether my epic to my computer and take advantage of the internet connection I get thru my ethernet connection. I know I can tether my epic to connect my lap top to the internet but I didn't know if I could go the other way or not?
Any thoughts or is this a hopeless cause?
Dunno if this works for the Epic but http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793102 might be helpful

[Q] Is it possible to make a LAN network with this phone?

Hi, I was wondering if you can use this phone to make a WLAN network. I recently switched from iPhone to Android and am having trouble finding an app to compensate for my needs. Basically back on iPhone when I tethered, I would automatically be connected to the network I created so I could play WLAN only games (like Muffin Knight or Minecraft Mobile) with the other people connected to me. With this phone however, I can't connect to my own wifi so it doesn't work. I've tried the regular Wifi hotspot, Foxfi, and Simple Tether. Whether or not it works in providing internet connection isn't really important to me, I just want to be able to play with my friends
That sounds more like some custom ad hoc or p2p network. You trying to play games via your own teather via the wifi from the phone. So your host and others join your private network ? You can then relay internet connection to them local or is this more a network vpn tunnel?
I remember doing something like this back when I had an idevice im just making sure im understanding properly.
