[Q] Problem with root on custom rom - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently using the SyndicateROM Frozen 1.2 rom, but I've noticed an issue recently. I've only just registered, and because of that, I can't post in the thread for this rom to ask my question. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131544)
My issue is with the latest Superuser app. It successfully installs the 3.0 su binary, but when the phone is rebooted, the 2.3.1 su somehow keeps coming back. Any other changes to the system folder stay, so it seems like it's not entirely being overwritten, so I'm not sure why the su binary keeps reverting when the phone reboots. It didn't have this issue in the stock rom, so I have to assume it's something wrong with the custom rom, or the included kernel.
I know the 2.3.1 su is perfectly functional and I don't specifically need the 3.0 Superuser app, but I always prefer to have the latest software when working with things like this. A flaw like this causes some serious problems for me.

Now please, search first. I see your 1 post count but these are all easy to find.

Sorry about that. I did try to use the Search, and it didn't come up with anything (perhaps I was searching the wrong thing). I skimmed through the topics too, but I must have missed it.
Thanks for the help. Now it's just a matter of getting the maker of the rom to fix their error.

Actually, its the kernel. Are you running the one that came with Syndicate Rom Frozen?
hint, reply to get your post count to 10

That would be correct. It's the only kernel I found that supports voodoo and overclocking to 1.2GHz. Before using the rom, I had another kernel that supported voodoo, but no overclocking.

Find Genocide 2.0 and flash that. It has superuser 3 fixed and it can overclock to 1.4 ghz, voodoo included.

I'm pretty sure that's the kernel I have. When the phone boots, it says Genocide 2.0 below the Samsung logo.

Hes updated it to work with superuser 3. Check the thread

I just noticed that. Hopefully he fixed the sbin issue instead of just loading the faulty version with 3.0 so we don't end up in the same issue when the next su update comes around.

By that time we will have official Gingerbread and Cm7 compliant Cyanogenmod lol

[Q] Problem with HTC TOUCH PRO

Hello guys, I have to ask you a question that I can not resolve for months.
I have a HTC TOUCH PRO, and every kernel I try to always have problems.
At first the device works well and is also very fast, but hopelessly after a while it stops. When you first start can last hours and then crash, but already the second hangs after a few seconds.
I've tried almost every kernel, even the "msm-htc-linux-20101204_005141-package.tar" by the comments that seems to be the best for my device, but nothing. I'm desperate and I do not know what to do.
Can you tell me how to solve this?
Waiting for reply.
Thanks to everyone that I will respond.
I'm not sure what your problem actually is. Sounds like the system_server bug... Make a call to voicemail, phone should speed back up.
Also, the newest kernel is 1253. The autobuild service has fallen behind GIT, see this thread to get the most up-to-date GIT commits.
i must only update with this kernel?

The kernel (zImage) goes hand-in-hand with the modules file.
Still not sure what you mean tho.
The problem is very simply. Any kernel I use the phone freezes.
This kernel (1253) is very very fast, but nothing, however, the phone freezes.

You say it's fast, but the phone freezes...?
Where does it freeze?
XDAndroid is far from 'stable'...
Us Touch Pro owners can't use 1253 due to certain things reported not working with this kernel. 1243 (i believe 124?) works fine.

O___o I did not realize that. All RAPH's...? Do we have logs? I need information man!
I'm not sure about all raph's per-say, but in the other normal FRX03 thread (within the past 4 pages i believe, if that) there was a user or two complaining about something not working (i wish i remembered, maybe data) not working, and i told them to revert back because of issues the new kernel(s) had, and he reported back "thanks, that fixed it." So SOMETHING is wrong for sure with Touch Pro's, but don't know for sure if it effect's diamond user's also. Sorry.
Update- Now i remember, it's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10590080&postcount=4072, the screen shifting problem. It shift's the screen over to the left by so many pixels, and get's shifted more and more as your using it. It was actually like 14-15 pages back (too much traffic, LOL), but since i use camera a lot, i am using 1214 (last recent one VC did) as i use his camera build, so i can take picture's. I did witness the screen shifting myself in my separate FRX03 build i have (since just use the camera build though solely). But was using 1241 i believe for my non-camera build.

Oh right, that. Screen shifting seems isolated to the RAPH800 and DIAM500. Probably RAPH500 as well, and I'm not sure what the other DIAM is... perhaps there is a DIAM800, not sure. Either way, seems to only be the CDMA devices.
But of course LOL. I personally love my Touch Pro, but WOULD love to upgrade if i had the money. But yeah, the dreaded shift problem til it's fixed. Not a BIG deal for now, since previous kernals will hold us off til that's fixed.

You still haven't properly elaborated on your actual problem. Vagueness will get you nowhere, except frustrate people.
I did not understand what you mean. I'm trying everything I was recommended and I can not solve this problem. I try to re-explain.
The problem is very simple: the phone, any kernel I mountains, after a couple of minutes it stops. I can not wait to give other details because the problem is just that.
Everything works (including wireless), the system is fast but is hopelessly blocked.
When you first start working for hours, just minutes after the second start.

Seems to be a pretty big language barrier here... "any kernel I mountains"...?
So has Android ever worked for you? What build(s) have you tried?
Sorry, my fault: "any kernel I mount".
Sorry but i can't speak english very well.
I have try a lot of build: kenya, cyanmod, FRG83.R6 ecc..
but the result don't change.

What about FRX03? I can't really help you with any build but that one - if you're using a different build, you'll need to get help in those threads. Generally if you just throw up a post like this, use FRX03 (or AOSP, whatever) as your base to test off of.
If it works in that build, but doesn't work in one of the others - then it's that build. If they fail in both builds, then it's a general issue with Android - or, you've just done something wrong .
I also think the same thing because no version I work, all give the same problem.
This is my steps:
1 - Extract all the package (eg superfroyo) to the root of SD, also replace the kernel (of course renaming the new kernel in "zKernel") and also the module, copying them always in the root.
2 - Put the file "startup.exe" HARETSTARTUP of the root and put the file "startup.exe" contained in INSTALL-NPKINSTALL in startups.
3 - Starting in the INSTALL file inside the folder NPKINSTALL.
4 - After the procedure I restart the phone and after i start the file "HARET".
At this point the system starts, it's fast and it all works perfectly but crashes for no reason without giving me the opportunity to do anything, I can only do a soft reset.
Kindly tell me if something wrong in the procedure.
Keep in mind, most neopeek variants require two partiations to be setup as primary (one FAT32 and one EXT2). You might find it a tad difficult in finding someone to help you troubleshoot your process unless you seek help from with-in the thread that you downloaded superfroyo or any other neopeek variants. It is rare to find but then again, you could just as easy try out FRX04 and post your feedback in that thread too. See THIS post for info on downloading the FRX04 update file but you will probably need to downoad THIS package first, then update the system.ext2, rootfs and kernel package after the fact. Stinebd has links for the rootfs in his sig.
n-Joie! (Enjoy)

Again, you're using funky version. As R^72 said, get help with those versions in that thread.
If you want help, at least try FRX03. You haven't even given it a shot. Then you can update to FRX04, and if that all works - then try something more complicated like a Neopeek build!

[ROM]ROOTSide (In the Works. First Upload this week)

ROOTSide ROM
Base Flipside ROM with root/busybox/unknown sources enabled. Only thing different in this rom than rooting it yourself is you get to check/uncheck unknown sources. Yes, that means you can turn unknown sources ON and OFF! I have a clockworkmod recovery folder zipped up for distribution, but I want to post a full-fledged ROM zip file for the masses. PM me, and I will send you the ZIP file that I have right now.
What you get:
base install for the flipside (AT&T) with motoblur ready to set up. It is the exact same thing as doing a factory reset, but you get all the benefits of superuser with busybox and the addead feature of having unknown sources checkbox in the settings.
I will work towards a deoxed version this weekend as well.
No custom bootscreen (yet). No custom anything, really.
Almost There
I am currently in the middle of Deodexing the image. I have added in wifi tethering, and ensured it will have superuser and busybox pre-packaged. Next step is pushing this to my wife's phone and not having her get a pretty brick in return. If all goes well, I will be posting the image by morning light (CST).
Fingers Crossed!
Well
Things didn't go too well with my first build attempt. Appears to be a permission issue with the /system folder. I will sleep on it, and give it a second go in the morning. Sorry for the apparent "tease". If you want a faster build, I could use some other devs working with me.
Hey man, sounds like you're doing great! Keep it up...I already found a way to get the root with unknown sources checked, so i'm just gonna wait for the deoxed version! Hope it goes well as you try again.
Current Issues
unable to deodex the following:
/system/app/AABSync.odex
/system/app/blur-services.odex
Will try to load to phone without dodexing those two files. Hopefully all will go well.
Me too...good luck!!

Glad to see some work on this device, I love the form factor but it's obviously not very popular with devs...
Very interested to see this come around. I would like to streamline the wife's phone. Her battery life is a 1/3 of my rooted and flashed X10. Sadly though I am NOT a Dev nor even a cook.
I would have had something sooner, but I ran into issues not related to the ROM. Still working on it. Anybody have an idea for upgrading the CWM from the one we can currently use?
so I was curious, I was able to get to unlock mode with an sqlite thing and it worked just fine for me, but have you been able to knock out the bloat and stuff? cause it sounds like the makings of a custom rom lol
you know what the turtle said.. slowly but surely I will win this race

Is it possible to get CM7, or it's a problem with a locked kernel?
Ok, I just got a new phone for the Mrs., so I can break the flipside and unbreak it as much as I like.

Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 root+Rom issue

Okeydokey. I installed a custom ROM ( VillainRom3.0 ) last night, and it has messed up a few things :/. Most apps randomly blank out and crash instantly - wifi doesn't work, phone freezes.
I'm rather new, and most of this stuff does confuse me; anyone able to post simple step by step of how to get a suitable kernal for VillainRom3.0 ?
EDIT: It also removed CWM and Superuser from the App menu :/

I was running villain rom with the standard chainfire kernel that most start with and that was stable - I must say though I wasn't too impressed with it - recently installed Westcrip's Resurrection ICS remix and boy am I happy I did! - if you want villain though just search for a compatible rom using the last letters from your baseband version - that normally does the trick! Good luck
I've found an old backup laying around, and got to installing that, so VillainRom is no longer on their. I'm back to a rooted firmware and that's it.
BUT: Now my computer ( nor any other ) recognises when It's pluggedin via USB :/.
I have this issue flashing some newer roms lately, not sure what it is.
To get back to a stock rom/rooted rom use the methods listed under the dev section of your phone that are the initial root direction using odin or something similar.

Trouble with Eclipse and manual adb app installing.

I did the unbrick method to restore my download mode a few days ago and have since gone ahead and installed the latest roms/kernels(currently on latest TBSGS3 and an AGAT FI16 kernel I believe, also tried with Jellyverse ROM and stock kernel). Now when I try to run my apps with Eclipse or even doing them manually they appear to go through successfully but the app does not end up on my phone. I tried a few samples from google as well as a basic "Hello World" app and it's no good.
Eclipse will report:
[2013-01-08 13:06:06 - BasicGLSurfaceView] Uploading BasicGLSurfaceView.apk onto device '464119fa1e8c1eb'
[2013-01-08 13:06:06 - BasicGLSurfaceView] Installing BasicGLSurfaceView.apk...
[2013-01-08 13:06:11 - BasicGLSurfaceView] Success!
[2013-01-08 13:06:11 - BasicGLSurfaceView] Starting activity com.example.android.basicglsurfaceview.BasicGLSurfaceViewActivity on device 464119fa1e8c1eb
But there is no activity on my phone and no app in the launcher and no further activity in Eclipse's console.
Then when I try to manually do it with ADB I get:
c:\Android\sdk\platform-tools>adb install BasicGLSurfaceView.apk
240 KB/s (11599 bytes in 0.047s)
c:\Android\sdk\platform-tools>
I've done the uninstalling/reinstalling of kies/drivers and the offline install method and all of that. The phone is installed properly for storage mode and download mode and is seen with the "adb devices" command. The lack of errors is baffling to me. Any guesses here?
Please confirm that you're running a jb repack as a dd. The repacks aren't meant for daily use. Application issues are part of the known problems currently.

Yes I'm using what I wrote in the original post. Without sounding snarky, your answer from stackoverflow clearly says emulator and something about graphics acceleration, and I'm on an ET4G with some sort of USB/permission/kernel issue...
I've been running non-stock everything since I got the phone about a year ago and never ran into this issue. I will try to revert to complete stock but I'm a bit hesitant to try that because two different roms and kernels(one stock) both have this same odd problem, no difference at all. I can't seem to find any similar cases online, the search terms "cant adb install no error"and every other way I've searched has brought up only problems with errors. I'll revert to complete stock and return with results.
If anyone knows a fix, or even something reasonable to try so I can use my favorite latest roms/kernels and retain development ability I will give it a try.

You weren't being snarky. I didn't take it that way.
I was taking into account that you were having an install issue from console to device, which that's what I could only find it relating to.
What you've pasted didn't have any returns pointing to permissions and it seems stackoverflow is the only location with any real answers,. And what I said in post two, we know that there are application issues with the repack. That's why I suggested going back to stock to rule out the kernel.
The repack that you're using isn't that old so you have a confirmed setup that you had working prior, why not go back to that setup and confirming?
:edit: -For the Lurkers - Had someone ask me what Eclipse is. AdamOutler did this last year. It's the only reason I know what it is.

Instead of doing something as atrocious as going back to stock I tried an ICS rom/kernel(Blu Kubans) and everything is working smoothly and quickly. I only have a small sample pool of 2 JB roms and 2 JB kernels but I'm going to go ahead and assume it's a JB problem until someone with OS/hardware programming knowledge tells me otherwise(I only do apps). Can anyone confirm this by trying to run an adb install command on a JB kernel/rom? Being on a huge developer site I assumed SOMEONE would have run into this same issue, but maybe they were more content than I am about going backwards in Android versions and not bringing it up.
Again, problem technically solved but only by switching device rom/kernel completely to ICS. The whole developing on JB is a big deal to me just for the sake of being on the latest version so I'd like to keep research going. Thanks.

Don't needed. You can root the normal cf-auto-root with latest sock without problem.
After we pm chat last days about rollback to T900UEUAND4 as unique possibility for rooting, i decided to do a last try before that, and luckily works perfect:
-just did a factory reset to restore from B3 recovery i been trying to prev installed T900UEUANI1 stock, wipe caché with stock recovery, odined cf-auto-root and voilá, just rooted!
No need to do the old B3-rollback-prior-D4 method now. Just a normal auto-root with no hassling.

Same here. It seems that the problem maybe is temperature: after some time charging it gets really hot and maybe can't awake from that and need rebooting.
I've disabled the magnet sensor vía 3rd app to off the close-lid functionality but don't improve the problem.
Here in summer the room gets to +30°c and the Tab ups to almost 65°c when it gets hot!
Maybe it just reach the temp threshold and self shutdown, or intend that not letting awake.
Perhaps CM11 build here charges battery too fast, with higher voltage than allowed and provoque overheating. I mean, i really feels that it's charging real fast..
Well currently its winter and cold. My tab was cool but it does not respond after deep sleep unless i reboot. Dev said he will look into it and i will wait. Not sure if temp is cause as mine was not definitely not hot.

Posted update last night, check it out
Thanks, btw, i was able to use ODIN to get a good version of TWRP and the ROM installed smoothly. I have encountered a few small bugs but nothing to report that is new. I noticed the "sleep of death" I think you are referring to, deep sleep resulting in a manual reboot to wake up. I have noticed my bluetooth disconnects and reconnects every few minutes during deep sleep..not sure why. will report back. Thanks SO SO much for the development, i love it, so sick of the green and blue and the settings tabs on this stock OS disgust me. I am curious tho, am I the only one who noticed significant slowdown and lag compared to stock? I do not put a lot of stock in benchmarks (skewed toward uncle sammy) but they also showed big slowdown....just my very humble and grateful early experiences. Thanks again.
total reflashing needed?

Well thanks, but,i don't see a flashing update but an entire 221MBs rom to flash..
Can you post just the little update file , if there's any, to flash above the installed rom?
I don't want to install rom, apps and config all over again.
Thanks!

Yes you are right, i'd tried again and it SODs no matter what temp are. A shame.

For rooting the latest firmware, did you use the CF-Auto-Root from the main site, marked KOT49H.T900XXUANB5, or a new one made for the KOT49H.T900UEUANI1? If the latter, would you mind posting a link to a T900UEUANI1 compatible version?

Well there's a problem right now, seems that this rom prevent to enter recovery.., this is what happen to me:
Reboot from Android with 'reboot to recovery' option and when the TWRP splash logo shows it enter in a bootloop always to this instance that TWRP logo appears.
Then i just installed the good old UAND4 rom and it works fine.
Maybe i shouldn't go to recovery direct from android to prevent bootloop happen and try to go the normal way from boot.
Don't know, maybe I'll try some day.., or maybe better wait to Android L comes to us.
Please advice all that stuff in the respective threads, i can't.., cause' these 'noobs-wait-to-10-posting-before' rules..
Greetings.

1. You can "dirty"-flash (install w/o wiping) the new ROM over the old one - nothing to re-install - if you wish you could extract the kernel (boot.img) and flash it by Flashify
2. There haven't been reported any SOD issues after flashing chhaggerty's latest ROM version
3. I have had no issues with with TWRP after having flashed the KOT49H.T900UEUANI1 - I just assume that some parts of the Firmware, not touched by cm, has been improved (but since this is WIFI only, it might not be the case for a non phone device) why I preferred to make the update.

1- but dirty flashing the update full rom performs well?
1.2- only the boot.img is needed for update?
3- have you tried the reboot-to-recovery option from android?
Thanks.

The changes done between the two versions (99% sure) was only some modifications in the kernel-code. Why flashing the kernel only should be fine, it will resolve the SOD and also make it run cooler. But if you wish you can also dirty-flash. However, cover your bases with a full back-up.
No issues at all with the reboot to recovery option

HERE it is
unzip the downloaded file
place boot.img on your SD
use Flashify to flash the kernel
after this I believe flashify will boot you up in recovery, just reboot and you should be good to go.
Just remember to make a back-up for just in case...

Installed boot.img and works flawlessly. Now i can back using lid cover again and no more hangs.
I hope they can solve the auto-rotate thing next time.
flashing screen, powering down...
I have twrp 2.8, v2 of our Cyanogenmod, set processor to on demand as suggested...
Still when I play games like CoC and others, if I am not plugged in even with a lot of bat% left, I get a flashing screen and occasionally my tab just decides it needs to shut off.
Any thoughts on what to do? I have greenify and Xposed installed too...
It pretty frustrating.
THANKS GUYS!!

My guess is that gaming need more power, why I would stop greeify and reset the governor to interactive while gaming. But other than that I have no ideas, as I haven't heard of this problem before.
This ROM is fantastic! Smooth, fast, responsive and just as described...big thanks.

I don't know if you noticed, but chhaggerty just released a version 3, maybe this will work as there has been some work on the governors.

Can i use the 4.4.4 GAPPS instead of 4.4.3 you are posting?

Thanks for another quality update, notably when reading how other cm11 exynos versions always seems to break something. With your T-900 cm11, I have never had any issues. The latest version is still running smooth, the changes in the CPU governor will probably allow for better battery life with the added conservative setting. However, I don't know what trade-off this will have on performance.

Maybe they start to use the big.LITTLE behavior of the Exynos, instead of ever using just the full power a15 cluster (battery eater).
I've haven't tried it but since it's a 4.4.4 rom they should work fine.
Error flashing ROM
Hi guys,
I get this error message when I try to flash CM11:
"Can't install this package on top of incompatible data. Please try another package or run a factory reset"
This is a brand new rooted SMT-900 Tab Pro 12.2". Here's some notes:
- I received the error using V1, V2, and V3, all receive the error message
- I downloaded two copies of v3 from two separate mirrors (CA and AZ), both receive the error message
- I did a factory reset and still received the error message
- Wiped davlik/cache/system partitions
- Tried on TWRP 2.7 and 2.8, both receive same error message
- All I have done to this tablet is root it, install TWRP, and create one backup
Any thoughts? I can try using CWM if someone can give me a quick overview of how to install it and remove TWRP (or keep TWRP).
