So here is the thing, so the screen size of the Nexus will be 4.6", is the actual usable part of the screen larger then our device?
What I mean, doesn't the buttons on the screen have to remain there all the time so in reality that part of the screen is not really usable for anything else. So it looks like you are not really getting any extra screen real estate you can use by having the buttons incorporated into the screen instead of the device.
Anyone see this any other way or am I missing something? If this is the case, it will really suck for smaller screens......
You are correct. From what I'm seeing the actual viewing screen is 4.3 inches do we imwill have a bigger screen in the end.

Yea, you are missing the fact that the menu buttons can be programmed to auto hide for most applications as the developer sees fit. I doubt you will see the menu buttons while playing games and watching videos, movies, etc.

Off topic, kinda, I am dubious about placing the buttons onscreen. I haven't played with honeycomb much but with every iteration of android I've owned the screen occasionally freezes leaving only the capacitive buttons operative. If and when the screen freezes in ics will the onscreen buttons remain inoperable? If so, I'm a little glad I got one of the last phones with separate buttons.

I've got a Nook Color...no hardware buttons (aside from power and volume) except home. So we get on-screen ones.
In situations like you describe they still work just fine. Those capacitive buttons are just a piece of the screen with no, well, screen under it. Same digitizer. I wouldn't worry about it.
The most recent leaked specs are pretty underwhelming, pretty much only the HD screen is a real upgrade and even then it's going to be curved (wtf) and smaller, harder to read text. The Prime is more of a sidegrade than anything, and not a very appealing one at that. I'm sticking with my galaxy II

Samsung is going to make the galaxy for google and its users will benefit from having updates asap and vanilla android; however the galaxy S series is samsung's flagship. The galaxy S3 will be the next real upgrade from our devices.

On my galaxy tab 10.1 it was the same concept with using on screen keys only and they never once dissapeared. There are threads and people rooting just to try and get the buttons to move off screen during video playback and such. Idk. We will sure find out wont we? But ya I think for the most part the buttons will always be on the screen 90% of the time
I've been looking at galaxy nexus videos for the last couple of days and the software key area does not look capable of using that area for anything but those keys. The screen looks like it ends before the keys.

I agree as well. This phone feels like a mini tablet. If the screen resolution is better, hopefully they put a bigger battery to balance it out. It would make a difference right? Higher Res equals more battery use? Anyhow I love this phone. It is not going anywhere. I can't find anything (other than LOS) which I never get on pulled stock kernel. Wifi range is better than OG Epic, battery great, Bluetooth connects properly, Everything works and works well for me

There is actual screen underneath those buttons. Idk if you've seen any of the demos but when doing thing like playing games or watching media those buttons disappear completely leaving you with a 4.65 inch hd screen. Another plus point is that they'll be context sensitive. So the dev of a given app can change them to fit your needs at any given time. I may be striking out from the crowd here but I'm actually totally in favor of then on screen keys. One of the most attractive features of the gnex in my opinion is the bezel to bezel screen.

I don't mean to sound like a ****, but, I'm not sure what your point is. I agree with you 100%. My only point was that on-screen buttons were no different than our current setup, as they are digitizer driven just the same (meaning that our buttons are the same on on-screen buttons except there is no screen underneath them and that their reliability in 'locked up' circumstances is not to be a concern.)
Also, addressing OP's main question, if you do the math....given the resolution and subpixel division between both phones we have, roughly, the identical panel but with a slightly different sub-pixel division. We have an absolutely identical sub-pixel amount...sure, they have less sub-pixels and we have more, but, they have more resolution and we have less. It's the same panel configured with a slightly different sub-pixel arrangement...so...for all intents and purposes consider our screen size identical. 0.10" is nothing to worry about.

I kinda agree, the phone itself isn't all that. I felt the same way with the nexus s also.
The other cool thing is that the buttons rotate to the bottom of the screen when you flip between portrait and landscape

I second that. I'm not too fond of the 16:9 aspect ratio on the GN compared to the screen ratio on our device. I think we have the superior hardware.

Of course the new Galaxy Nexus has a better screen. It will look the same size as ours but will be a lot higher resolution. The screen is better on the Nexus and it is the one thing, other than ICS, I wish the SGS2 had. The Nexus and SGS2 have almost exactly the same physical footprint so it doesn't feel different than ours but you get more screen real estate when you need it (games, movies, internet, etc.). The people complaining about the 16x9 are off because the only time it seems like that is when you are in a movie or game and then 16x9 is great because it's like an HDTV. The area the SGS2 excels are the Camera and the processor. I don't know how anyone on here can argue that our older, lower res screen is in any way better than the new 720p Galaxy Nexus.
i just dont like how there's no touch to focus on camcorder. other than that this phone is best phone out there! lol
I wish it had some contour to it or something to make it a little easier to hold. When typing one handed I also accidentally hit the search button with my palm because of the size

It is an amazing phone and still the best piece of hardware on the market but other than being huge (which I like) it has no character to it's design. It's a standard looking black slab phone.
Audio quality.
I hate the shape somewhat its like somebody steam press the phone flat. I wish it was the shape of the galaxy nexus. I know I'm being picky but the design of a phone matters alot to me

I love the phone over all. And I know how Samsung is going for super light weight in regards to its build material...but they should take a chance and throw some metal in the mix..like some of the HTC and Nokia phones.

The fact is its a Samsung and Im an HTC fanboy. It took me a while to get over it.
This phone has one of the worst recording mics in the history of phones. 3 concerts sonce I've had it, and not one with audible sound to share.
Other than that, great handset.

I can go 2 days on a charge and never have a problem with the AOS bug. It does show up high on the usage list but never has any type of negative impact on battery life.
The only thing I would change about this bad boy is the screen resolution, there are some noticeable jaggies when playing some games. I wouldn't however be accepting of a pentile screen to achieve the higher resolution. I had the GNEx for a bit and I don't care what anyone says, you CAN definitely tell it's a pentile. That was one of the reasons why I returned it.
Hmm for once I can say I am pretty satisfied, but if I had to pick...It would be the slight delay we experience when pressing the power button to wake the phone. From what I have seen on here it is a power saving feature and has something to do with the phone sleeping, so I am actually ok with that. The other thing would be the build materials of course. Being a former HTC guy, I missed the matte finish and metals, but now I am actually in love with how light and thin my phone is. Can't wait to see whats next for samsung !
I can't complain about this phone (The SGSII). It's a solid powerhouse of a phone with a killer battery. Great piece of hardware.
I can however complain about the E4GT, Sprint's terrible take on the phone. No NFC, odd design because of the bigger screen (which I like the big screen, just not the design), Sprint blocks certain apps in the market that are compatible with the SGSII, beta builds of ICS have leaked for other versions of the SGSII, but Sprint is still patching GB for some ODD reason, oh and WiMax *puke*.

so ive had this phone for 3-4 months now, and ive discovered these..really awesome things
1. great build quality, i dropped it the other day and the phone had absolutely no scratches(from my waist height, so around 3 foot? onto the pavement..) this really shocked me
2. the phone is super fast..even compared to my friend's sgs2 i9100(after installing faux's kernel at least)
3. HOLY CRAP amazing screen, i get theres blob and lines..but since they arent all that visible to me i just ignore it.. now ive popped in a movie in it today for the first time..and holy crap the colors are amazing..transformer 1 looks better on my phone versus my 1080p screen..

i watched the movie on my computer, not a tv..hehe the thing is, on my computer screen it lacked contrast, lcd/led screens never display black properly, so movies look crap compared to superamoled..which can display proper black...

You're not very visually observant if you don't see the difference between OLED and typical TV screen technologies. OLED kills LCD and plasma in contrast. Black is black. I actually bought an Amaze first, because the screen looked "brighter" to me in the store. But I couldn't stand the gray "blacks" that was much more obvious in low ambient light conditions. A few other things annoyed me so I swapped it for the GS2 and I am much happier with this phone. I've actually watched a few movies on the phone because the subtle shadow detail is so amazing on Super AMOLED Plus. This is why the big buzz from CES is the OLED TVs being introduced by LG and Samsung this year. I can't wait to see these TVs in person, although I'm sure I won't be able to afford one for a while.

This is the best phone ever. I purchased white one from ebay and I am loving it. This might sound crazy but I love touchwiz on sammy devices. I also own a white samsung galaxy tab 10.1 and I love both of my sammy devices. I love sammy touchwiz music player app and file explorer.

i was actually thinking about the blob stuff..im quite sure our adreno 220 gpu can actually support a 720p screen..so why dont we wait and see if samsung pushes a 4.5 inch 720p phone out, and buy the replacement screen for it?
I'm in love with this phone. Makes my Sensation feel like a G1. I'm still dancing since I got it free. I still am in shock watching apps install almost instantaneously.

really? is a screen transplant actually possible? cost aside ($100+ for a screen when you can just invest in the next best device, actually SAMOLED+ may be even more $$) assuming the screen's ribbon connections are magically compatible, wouldnt the software of the phone only pump out WVGA resolution and your 720p screen would have ugly black bars? Phone screens != PC monitors mix and match

For those who got this as a pseudo tablet? its been almost 6 weeks I got the beauty and about 2 weeks since I got the allshare cast, and I haven't touched my roku or asus media player
Note 2 is everything for me, after using it so much, the screen size is normal to me ( compared to my previous S3 ) but I really don't mind it being slightly bigger - about 6"

The rumor is that 6.3" will be the next screen size. Whether this is true remains to be seen. Too early to tell.
With a 16:9 aspect ratio for the screen, that would mean the width of the phone would grow approximately 0.375" more, or 3.5". (Note II's width is 3.125".)
Personally, I actually like the idea. I probably wouldn't even mind a 7" (Approximately 7.25" if I go by 9cm x 16cm.) screen if they keep to the edge thinness around the screen, if not thinner. That should allow the growth of the phone to be as minimal as possible. Of course, I'd stop at 7" for the max size I wouldn't mind on my phone. Any larger and many people will definitely start having problems holding their phones edge to edge.

General Thread - thus the question
I am basically saying that since many of us got this as pseudo tablet, it would be nice to have a slightly bigger screen so we could read ebooks etc
When I got the S3, screen seemed big and then we get used to it, same with the note - but we could increase that threshold to perfection

I know but much better than carrying 2 devices, what I am saying it would satisfy being a tablet and a regular phone if it was slightly more bigger
I have no issues carrying it now, hands have plenty more room
I wouldn't care for a larger screen so much as I would like Samsung to natively support a better pixel density so that I could fit more onto the screen. Something like 182 instead of the default 240(?).
If they kept the phone the same size, but increased the screen size, it would not be too bad.
I'm wondering if the next Note could eliminate the home button. That would be one way of increasing screen real estate, without making the device too much larger. It could go fully-touchscreen, as Jelly Bean devices are supposed to be, anyway. However, I think the home button has sort of become synonymous with the Galaxy line of devices, so it may stay. I would love 6 - 6.3" inches on the new Note. I wouldn't have issues with mobility.

I would like to see no home button and screen extended all the way up and down. 6"-6,3" screen would be awesome.
I am fine as is hope they don't make the size of the phone bigger. If they can make screen bigger but keep same size I am OK with that.

By the time 5" 1080p screens are common items and I upgrade from the Note 2, I hope there will be lots of options, some with pens (which I'm not convinced I need, but an interesting thing to try), and ideally, some without Touchwiz which I really don't like so far - I'm sure I'll be trying a ROM with a more Nexus like experience before I'm done with this phone. Too bad Google missed the ball (for me) so badly with the Nexus 4, I would have liked to consider it. Maybe the Nexus 5 or whatever the first 1080p Nexus will be called will be better.

This has absolutely no chance in hell of happening, for a plethora of reasons.
1) It would be going backwards, when sales of the Galaxy Note line have proven that people like phones with really large screens, so Samsung backtracking to anything smaller that 5.5" inches would be stupid, and would eventually run into product overlap.
2) The product overlap would come with the rumored Galaxy S4. The S4 is strongly rumored to have a 5" screen. There's probably a good chance it will also have 1080p, but I sort of doubt it. At any rate, there would be no business case for Samsung to have two products that are virtually identical. The S III already shares a significant amount of the Note IIs features, sans having an S Pen. You make a Note III with a 5" screen and you'll just have an S4 with an S Pen. That's utterly asinine.
3) I'm willing to bet the vast majority of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a 720p screen and a 1080p screen. This is just the hype for this year. Seems like every year there a new hype geared towards sheep and ill-informed people. One year it was 3D technology. Last year it was quad core technology. This year its 1080p. Another year photo pixels were all the rave. Another year Apple's retina display was all the rave. Pretty much none of those things mean jack s*** in the grand scheme of things. I remember when I was going to purchase a new 40"+ 3D LED TV. I read many reviews to see if there was a huge difference between 720p and full-1080p HD. EVERY review stated that the only time the difference between 720p & 1080p became noticeable and worth considering, was when you had a screen larger than 40". So, if that's true, there's no way in hell anyone is seeing a noteworthy screen difference in a device as small as a cellular phone. At one point, I had a 720p Plasma HDTV and a 3D LED HDTV, simultaneously. To be honest, I was more impressed with the display on my 720p plasma, than I am on my 1080p 3D TV I ended up keeping. And I only kept the 3D television because it was packed with more features that sort of leveled the playing field.
If you desire as smaller phone, the great thing about Android, is that there's seemingly an endless array of phones to choose from. Get an S III or S4 or DNA or Nexus. Sounds like the Note II isn't a good fit for you.
Currently I'm sure I can't tell the difference between 1280x720 and 1920x1080 for a 5" display. When I finally break down and admit I'm old enough to use reading glasses (which I should have done years ago as my close focus distance moved from 7" where it used to be to 13" now), then I suspect I will be able to tell the difference when holding my phone closer than 8". Other than focus, I have no issue holding my phone that close and I'll be able to get that much more detail into my brain (from maps, text, whatever). You can call 1080p hype if you want, but I think it is still actual progress. I don't know what photo pixels are, and I was not interested in 3D myself, but 1080p I am optimistic about.
Sorry if I'm not following thread rules or something - I'm just saying what I was thinking. I agree that Samsung Note 3 will quite likely go bigger, especially if the S4 is bigger. Who knows, anything could happen by the time I get another phone - maybe the glasses concept will be so appealing, I'll go that route.
I chose the Note II because a) I wanted a 5" or more display, b) I wanted to try out the s-pen concept which I don't know if it will be for me or not till I try, c) I wanted a big battery, and SD storage, d) I don't want to change carriers since as much as I don't like AT&T for many reasons, I'm on a family plan which I don't want to change and they are the only carrier with good coverage over my work campus. I ruled out the Nexus 4 and the Droid DNA pretty fast though I looked at them. I absolutely didn't need LTE and my data experience with AT&T around Los Angeles for a few days and Las Vegas for a few days has been very unimpressive - no better than my previous 3GS iPhone. Hopefully that will improve as the network improves.
Anyway, it's pretty early to speculate now - I better get back to figuring out how to use my phone to get my core iPhone use cases working again: podcasts, visual voicemail (both of these use cases require installing add on software I've found), offline topographic maps (I have 3 programs I've been trying on the Nexus 7), and a few other things. For ROMs, the HyperNote sounded the most interesting to me, but it seems like the AT&T model won't run many ROMs yet (e.g. no HyperNote yet) - I hope this is some transitional issue as porting ROMs from the International to the various carrier versions (which is a huge annoyance to me that this fracturing even exists) is worked out.

This. I wouldn't want anything physically bigger, but if they can remove more bezel (and NOT remove physical buttons), That would be sweet.
I feel like the screen from my new note makes my eyes ache and get blurry after extended use. Does anyone else have this experience? I am wondering if it is the WQXGA LCD screen that is doing it. I didn't have eye strain with my last tab, the asus tf101, which admittedly had a much lower resolution IPS screen. I also didn't notice eye strain for the short time I had the tf700, another asus with an IPS screen which I ended up returning for the note. So maybe IPS screens are better for me.
I tried reducing the brightness on the note and have it in movie mode but I still notice the pain. I am not sure if this pain will go away after time or I am imagining it.
If anyone has any experience with this I would appreciate hearing about it.

I dont have any medical problems in my eyes, I dont need glasses... I never experienced something like that (just something weird in my fingers) but actually my boyfriend does...
He feels the same as you... But in this case, his problem is different... After a long time with the same problem, he experienced random nosebleed's... Like pression. The only thing that helped him is just the use of eyeglasses. But maybe is not the same thing, so dont worry, im just saying my opinion.
What else do you feel? Surely your eyes got tired, or you just need glasses for that. Something else that you want to say? Greetings! (And sorry for my bad english.)

Your Note probably has smaller text than the other tablets. Now your eyes are straining to see the smaller text.
The cheap solution is Drugstore reading glasses, which may or may not help you.
The best solution is a visit to your optometrist. It happens to most of us. :cyclops:
Thanks for the replies. I have used other 10 inch tablets and I have not had a problem with them. Why would the text be smaller on the Note if I am looking at the same web page in Chrome, for example, at the same zoom level as another 10 inch tab like the transformer tf101 or tf700?

The higher the resolution, the smaller the "default" font.
A 10" 800 x 600 screen will use a larger font, while a 10" 1920 x 1080 can take advantage of the resolution by using a smaller font.
The normal eye can make out smaller text if it's "clear". Lower resolution screens have fuzzier text.
The Note's 1920 x 1080 screen is the "clearest" on the market, beating the Apple by a wide margin. Any other 10" tablet you look at will be less clear than the Note.
The only thing that hurts my eyes are reading all these stupid complaints about this tablet. This has got to be the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. Take vitamins, get glasses and get Laid..

No need to be rude. This guy has a legitimate question. Sorry if it's not up to your forum standards, but this is the Q&A forum and he had a Q. No need to be a douche bag about it.
I had the same problem. Two things helped
1. Got an app named Lux from Play Store. Excellent for reducing eye strain especially at night.
2. Installed a screen cover - matte anti reflective. Also has the advantage of being fingerprint resistive. Amazon has several brands.S-pen works just fine with it.
I get blurry eyes and what not like @xda-soar mensioned thanks to using the tablet in a dark environment. I didnt even know an app existed that can lower the brightness further (esp in stock Android) so Thanks for that @arbit12 the Lux app is awesome and Thanks @xda-soar for asking the "idiotic" ( )question as otherwise I'd probs had never found this app. :thumbup:

If your eyes hurt, yo u are either reading a bright screen in a dark room, or you need new glasses. The tablet isn't the culprit, eye strain is. I have no issue with the screen at all, and I use it quite a bit.

I'm not blaming the screen as such but I find it doesnt go as dim as I'd like at times when I use it in a relatively dark room. I'm used to using my laptop at a very very low brightness setting.
During the day however I never have any problems with it, so it is just a night thing for me but anyways with the Lux app now installed on the tablet all is well.

Actually any Samsung AMOLED hurts my eyes, too. I think it is not problem with most people.
I and my wife are facing the same issue of eye strain , this is not after prolonged usage , within 2 mins , eye strain starts while using regularly , there is no strain whenever j use my iPhone and my friend's ipad
Yes!! I found your question when I googled the same question. My eyes are blurry for at least 10 minutes after using my S7. My old phone’s, iPads, don’t do this.. and I’m on low brightness and night mode.. it still does it. I needed to buy glasses shortly after I got the phone. I am at the age for it, but the eye strain and pain is seriously ooonly after every use of my phone. I don’t even want to check my messages any more. Ouchies!

I have just got the new note 10 phone and experiencing the same thing.... never had problems with my eyes beforehand, since this phone!
For all those posting negative snotty comments.. get a life... why are you even here to comment if you have nothing good to say?

Old topic but:
- IPS/LCD is usually less stressful on the eye (as there is no pwm flickering on <100% brightness) compared to OLED.

I would say.. the Note 2014 is fine, but it will never be as good as an e-reader screen - in terms of like eye friendliness.
For me, I did have some eye strain with this device when I was using it for hardcore note taking. But I think it only happened because I was so focused on taking notes, and trying to make them look good and whatnot that I didn't blink often enough. My relative used this tablet for a few years - and now it's back to me. Used it like all day long and never complained about eye strain. So I am certain it was on me.
I feel strain when I look at it in the dark to unlock. Apparently due to facial recognition, the brightness goes full to emit light and brighten the face for recognition.unfortunately you need to leave eyes open for it to unlock or see what you are typing. Switching off facial recognition and turning on blue filter fixed it for me.
