Working wireless tether for root users? - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Does anybody know what version of the Wireless Tether for root users works with the rooted stock ROM for the Inc2? Tried the latest 3.1 beta (3.1b6) but it doesn't work.

try this
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk

Im using the 2.0.7 wireless tether and does not work on my dinc 2, im running tsm_gingerbangsense_2 this is the message. Cannot communicate with DNS server (#########) Network diagnostic pinged the remote host but did not receive a response.
In the network and sharing center i can see this (this computer-Android tether-----x-----)

works fantastic on inc2HD

I found that Open Garden app works just great.

Not being able to communicate with the dns server means your phone can't connect to the internet, so there is nothing to rebroadcast via wifi. are you within a good signal area for 3g, and does your data work in other apps?

Hi OP.
Enable mss clamping and routing fix in settings on the newest beta. You will be up and running in seconds.
I noticed that using power savers may disable tethering. Uninstall those as well.

I'm having the exact same problem. I've tried multiple tethering apps and none of them work and last time I tried using open garden it broke my 3G and I had to revert to a backup. I'm running MIUI 10.7.

This may be a dumb question, but can root users use the 3g hotspot found in wireless settings for free? Or do I need to download another app.

All depends on the ROM. If you're running the stock ROM but just rooted you'll need another app. Some ROM developers hack the built in app.

I use wireless teather 2.0.7 its from google and have no problems

Sprint WiFi Hotspot apk -Froyo

I am looking for a way to disable authentication? This is easily done on an Evo... See this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838644
Calkulin has a hack for the Evo to disable it, anyone port this to the Epic?
Also maybe if someone could port the disable usb debugging icon even when enabled too?
If you are rooted and install one of the latest froyo roms like quantum 1.3 or 1.4
its built in and working.

OR you can cancel your sprint wifi hotpot ($30/month savings) and just use wireless tether, which is free. Just sayin...

This is what I use for wifi, since my company laptop will not link to adhoc networks, don't know if it will work with ps3 I do not do ps give it a try if you like.

This is why I want the Sprint one and just disable the authntication as they have already done with the evo, downside is they have not got 4g to wifi working as 4g uses mac adress for authentication possibly.
I already have WiFi tether app that works with 3g and 4g but the mode is ad-hoc and certain things like xbox, ps3, psp need infrastructure mode. I would be happy if we could get as far as Evo and get and have working infrastructure 3g without authentication restriction.

do you pay for it? can you confirm it was sprint hotspot and not wifi tether
yeah i've been on quantum since 1.0, on 2.7 now and i dont think it works. it activates, lets you connect and "looks" like you have internet but activating the hotspot deactivates 3g for some reason. gives you the registration error.
that being said, i downloaded caulkins mod and will look into seeing if i can replicate it on the epic. i'm guessing i'll hit a roadblock as i'm sure people have tried this already, but we'll see!
looks like Caulkin is who made that MOD for the evo, i asked him on here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10382458#post10382458 if he could provide a how to as the same hack might work for us.
right now i'm just comparing a stock framework.jar with his mod. first delta i found is classes.dex/android/content/pm/registeredservicescache.smali but i dont know if that means anything yet, we'll see.
will this hack work on the shift also>>??

Upgrade to the newest wifi tether, version 3. It works in infrastructure mode. It's still marked as experimental, but it did work for me.

Agreed, the newest wifi tether actually launches sprint AP with authentication disabled. I've read that its a little buggy, but I used it yesterday for about 10 min browsing the web with no issue.
Using the newest tether (v3) has actually reset my phone, IE erased the data/factory reset. Kinda annoying.
How? No one ever gives instructions.
Is there a way to get a free hotspot or wifi tether on an UNROOTED Epic?
Thanks,
Sam

For free? The short answer is no. You can download the ap apps like wireless tether from the market, but without root permissions, the apps will not work. Some reason your hesitant to root your phone?
Requires a rooted phone.
Backup your phone with CWM3 as this app is still experimental and can cause issues.
Download pre10 or pre12 version 3.
Correctly install with ADB or a file/app manager.
Shutoff 4g and open app.
Select your device profile as Epic 4G
Start app and verify it successfully started (no errors, binaries installed etc.)
Don't worry when you see Sprint Hotspot activated message as this app uses something from the Sprint app
Start 4G
Supports infrastructure mode

WiFi Tether Compatible with PS3

I've tried Barnacle, Sprint Hotspot & WiFi Tether. Sprint Hotspot keeps giving me an Error message. The other 2 can't be detected by my PS3 scans. I've tried with & without password encryption & made sure my SSID was visible. Any suggestions?

Ive had the same problems with wifi tether not being recognized. The hotspot hack does work though but without 4G its like waiting for paint to dry

Funny, this has popped up in the forums for every phone I have owned. Why would someone want to game through a high latency, inconsistant cellphone connection? Trying to play in the motorhome on vacation?
If Sprint Hotspot gives you issues, you'll need to flash THIS ...but that'll limit you to 3G. Does the PS3 work with AD-HOC connections (which is what wifi tether and barnacles app creates)? I'm guessing it doesn't by default since you can't see it.
Not gaming although I did play the Uncharted 3 Beta thru my Vibrant & it wasn't a problem. I just moved and have to wait for Comcast for like 2 weeks. Just want to watch some Netflix
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I think what I read on Google says I need to be in Infrastructure mode or something. Idk... But the native wifi tether worked with my Vibrant so I can't imagine why it wouldn't work here.
Thanks for the help fellas. Happy Thanksgiving & all that

Hey,
Yes it does sprint's evo was the first to offer 4g wireless tethering and it was a large selling point for the device when it first came out!
If you are rooted you will be able to use it for free the issue is sprint likes to block certain apps in the market so just go to 4shared.com and search for wifitether.apk or I like opengarden.apk and those will get you free tethering so you can get your tether on!! Root for the win!
I hope I helped if I did please hit the thanks button!

Wireless Tether app.
Ok I have been doing some searching and decided to piggy back on this post for my question. I am running decks rom with the hacked hotspot and I also have the tethering app. I mostly use the app because it tethers 4g and I live in a solid 4g area and life was good. I recently received an Acer iconia a500 tablet and for technical reasons beyond my level it does not read the tethering app as a network due to some adhoc or something close to that. So I'm forced to use the hacked hotspots. I would like to know if anyone knows of a rom whos hacked hotspot can tether 4g. Or if mine does...I just am not sure how to tell for sure. Temporary fix until I can root my tablet and allow it to read the tethering app. Thanks!

Which app are you using in wireless tether there's a setting for adhoc or infrastructure ill look at the settings in about 20 mins when my download is done cuz I don't wanna kill my wifi effing around with WT but when the DL is done ill tell u what label to look under

In wireless tether go in settings > setup mode > change it to auto in device setup just above it change it to generic or evo4g and try it that way I can connect anything to mine with those settings

Ok I think I'm going to try to download a newer version of wireless tether because I don't see those options. I have 2.0.7

Appreciated, but that is not the issue. I have the unlocked hotspot but to my understanding that only tethers 3g. Is that not correct? And I'm trying to get my tablet to recognize the wireless tether app

First off thanks for all the suggestions.
Quick update : I downloaded a newer tether apk that had those options. I set them to where my tablet recognizes the network but now it just stays stuck on "obtaining IP" and doesn't connect. I tried restarting tablet, restarting phone, changing ssid, all I could think of. Even connecting to another network then trying to switch. Does not ever connect. I can still connect with the hacked hotspot so not the end of the world but would like to solve this.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I've had that problem a few times too try fixing permissions I'm recovery maybe called uid mismatches depending on your recovery you can also go into LAN settings and try different ips in wireless tether and adjust the broadcast frequency under another setting I can't think of the name but they are all in WT

[Q] Tethering with Bluetooth

I thought I figured out how to Tether using Bluetooth. I was interested in using this method -- primarily for my iPad 2 -- instead of rooting (which I already am) and using WiFi Tether - TrevE Mod which seems to work well.
I was able to connect my iPad 2 via Bluetooth and share my WiFi connection on my GN2. However, it doesn't seem to work when WiFi is off and I try to use 3G. I get this Error #67: Registration failure. Your data service username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again (see attached). If I turn WiFi back on, it won't connect to the router -- until I turn off Bluetooth. The I can connect via 3G or WiFi again.
I'm wondering if this is happening because I don't have the WiFi Tethering package with Sprint?
yes the Sprint tethering package enables both forms of wireless tethering. use open garden for Bluetooth or just use the wifi in the ****pad

The app posted supports only ad-hoc connections according to the description.
I haven't seen any android versions that supported ad-hoc connections by default. You've always needed to replace wpa_supplicant to make ad-hoc networks visible to android wifi devices. Note that you can broadcast ad-hoc without changes. You just won't see ad-hoc networks without changes.

i really dont get it, what's the point of tether apps like PDAnet+ or Foxfi?
The default built-in tethering functions (wifi hotspot, usb tethering, OR bluetooth) work fine and free. am i missing something here..?
I am guessing they meant they are running the sharing app on another device (since they mentioned tmobile). So the tmo phone is sharing the tmo connection and nexus 7 is using that shared connection to access the net.

O really? is it because tmobile detects the built-in tethering and does not want to allow it? Because i'm with Rogers (canada) and i've been using the built-in bluetooth tethering (JB 4.2.2) of my cellphone data plan to my Wifi tablet (galaxy tab 2) for a long time now and it works all the time.
