Coming from a (gulp) Nokia E71x... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

First post.
Just ordered the SGS2, migrating over to T-mobile from (godawful) AT&T on the (godawful) E71x.
I've done a bunch of skimming here, tons of good info.
Question: is there a definitive, "go to" guide to get up and running with the SGS2? I want to hit the ground running when it shows up next week. I see some noob guides to Android, but most are quite dated.
Thanks in advance.

get titanium backup and ROM manager apps so u will be prepared when it's rooted. Get a proper home launcher like zeam launcher, etc.

I'd skip the other home launchers, I like the TouchWiz 4 launcher a lot more than those other launchers.
MOG is an excellent music subscription service with high quality lossy downloadable streaming music.
I like Opera Mobile for fast connections. It works well with most websites. I use Opera Mini when I'm on EDGE or GPRS. I use Firefox Beta 8 in the market if Opera Mobile doesn't want to work with a certain site or if I want to access Firefox Sync. Set your User Agent to Desktop with both browsers. Firefox isn't my main browser because it doesn't support flash and it's intensive in CPU usage but Opera Mobile does support flash and it tends to be easier on the processor.
Tunein radio is awesome
What are you looking for though?

I agree that tunein radio is awesome, it's my go to app for internet radio.
The first thing I did was a factory reset, I did it before I ever left the store. I waited until I got home and connected to wifi before I began my setup. It did not have the new market so after adding my google account I opened the market and closed it. I then turned my screen off and left it alone for 20 or so minutes so it could sync from Google. After 20 minutes I had the new market and all my contacts were there.
So I would recommend those steps to begin and whatever you do after is up to you. That is the great thing about Android, everyone is allowed the experience of their choosing!
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App

I would do the same thing as far as syncing goes. I also once owned an E71, I loved the hardware on those phones but not the OS... I'd get acquainted in general with Android for a bit, check out the market, and go from there. Few helpful tips:
-holding down the home button brings up task manager
-the option key (far left) is useful in a lot of situations. If you're stuck in an app but want to change it's settings or don't see the button you need, try hitting option!
-set up gmail and Facebook if you'd like to have sync'd contacts including contact photos
-if you use dropbox, go grab the app from the market!
-if you tap the home button and the lock button at the same time, it will take a screenshot. The screenshot can be found in the gallery under that name (screenshots), if you open it in there and tap on the image, more options will appear below so you can share the image with us for example if you need help with something.

Facebok App

Hi All
I have installed the new Facebook application from the Microsoft Website and when I run the app, it allows me to place my username and password, but then crashes and make my phone slow. (To resolve the issue I have to switch off and switch the phone back on)
I did have the Facebook-Ather version and this work fine, but the new full version (Facebook_v1.0.0.7p) doesn't
Has anyone else had this issue and is there any known fix’s?
Thanks
I didnt have this problem, but after i installed mine, i didnt really like it.
So i uninstalled it, and im now using the Fim programme now, which allows
you to use the instant messenger and look at your web page at the same time. Its so much better. Hope this helps.
Id say try this app.

Just yesterday I found that you can not add new friends using the facebook application by searching their name or email address.
the 1.007 microsoft facebook suck biiiiiig time.
Mostly with me it just says "fetching" for every tab and never gets the job done. And it doesn't update the stuff.
So I use opera on my HD for that stuff, fast - but many things are missing on the mobile version, like foto upload.
When you go to All contacts on your phone and check there the updates - once you have given your userid and pwd - it seems to find the known contacts quite well.

i have one answer: use Iris browser. not only i am enjoying the full functionality of facebook but i can even play mafia wars ...
i don't understand the obsession with Opera. yes, our HTC devices come with Opera built in but after 5 minutes with Iris...i forget Opera.
with Iris you can enjoy facebook even in iphone style. just try on Iris:http://iphone.facebook.com
Thanks, I have traid this and it seem to work well.

Wow, I love this board...!
Opera mobile 10.1 beta works like a charm on my Galaxy S Doc Froyo XWJPO v7.6.2. It even downloads flash-videos (e.g. tagesschau.de) and opens them with the internal video player. Only live stream is not working.
Thanks a lot. Is Opera going to publish this version or will Opera Mobile 10 for Android only be pre-installed on selected devices? (I read something like that on areamobile.de --> uu.uu.uu.areamobile.de/news/13631-opera-mobile-10-jetzt-auch-fuer-android)
Isn't the final version going to be released today?
Works amazingly fast and smooth on my galaxy s. I love it! It doesn't play all our even most flash content so it can't yet replace the stock browser, but once plugin support is there, I'll only use this one for sure!
Will the mobile version compress data like mini did?

What I like the most is reflow on pinch to zoom same way as on my nexus modded aosp stock used to be. Very familiar as symbian user as well.
No flash yet. Hope it comes.
Available on market now!!!
Also for those not familiar with the opera you can change opera user agent by opera:config menu (many other settings as well like cache, ram management etc.). User agent 2 will give you desktop and will auto launch youtube app so it's still better quality than what you get by default on mobile site as a consultation for not having full flash.

How do you get to the advanced settings? I cant seem to find it on this beta release
Gave it a quick try. Very good but still not perfect.
When zooming in the images and text are blurry for a second and it only updates after you stop zooming, unlike the stack browsers where it's instant.
It is very smooth when scrolling though.
Also in landscape mode, I can't zoom out fully. This is weird, why do they do this? It's not as bad as Opera Mini was in landscape but it still prevents this from being as nice to use as Dolphin HD. I want full control of zoom all the time, not just in portrait mode.
Also can't import bookmarks from the stock browser. Hope they add this ability.
Needs an exit button for when you don't want to leave it in the background, like Dolphin HD. Sometimes you want to close it so it doesn't return to it's previous state and rather starts 'fresh'.
Will keep it to see future updates and maybe if I want to preserve bandwidth when using mobile data. But Dolphin HD will stay as my default for now.
I have a problem on JPA... Internet browser won't save as default, no matter how many times I set it >_<
Great news.

I can zoom in and out completely in landscape and in portrait
Imports bookmarks and speed dial from desktop version. And unlike chrome to phone it actually works.

Depends on the site.
As a test go to myadsl.co.za.
In Dolphin HD (and I assume default browser too) when I hold the phone in landscape I can see the whole width of the site.
But on Opera I cannot, it refuses to zoom out that far.
It also seems to take longer to load the page (using Wi-fi), regardless of the Opera Turbo setting. This might just be someone else in the house using the connection at the same time as me though.
I'll give it a go later and maybe post back my findings. Opera Mobile on Symbian and Windows mobile were very good and i'd tried Opera Mini on some dumbphones as well and it worked well. I hadn't tried Opera Mini for Android as I didn't like the idea of only being restricted to using Opera's proxies (I assume that was the only option).
Opera Mobile 10.1 Beta for Android direct link from Opera or pick a version yourself over here.
No flash integration.... sigh.

I really was interested in having the youtube app playback youtube videos instead of the stock player. i changed the user agent to 2 as you describe above and it didnt work. i tried clearing cache, cookies, etc and restarting my phone. i have a htc droid eris running 2.1. can you provide more details on how you were able to get the youtube app to launch automatically from opera mobile?
thanks in advance.
Sorry seems web ignores uset agent string right now but if you go to bottom of youtube page and select full site next time you launch opera it will remember it and launch app respectively.

Thanks for trying, but it didnt work for me. it must have somethign to do with the url on youtube. It tried to launch the youtube player as you indicated but i got an error that it couldnt connect to the server.

Set it to whichever string you want from "User Prefs" -> "Custom User Agent"
Opera Mobile is the first browser to actually challenge the stock one for mobile browsing supremacy.

I tired string 2 as discussed above but it didnt work. i am a bit of a noob, so can you go through the exact settings when i do about:config? is there an index of what user agents the numbers correspond to? for example, when i use skyfire, the videos launch just fine in the youtube app. however, i agree with you abotu opera mobile and this is the only thing i need to be all set.

[Q] New to Android and G2, have some questions...

Hey guys, new to Android and G2, my G2 just arrived today and I'm in the swing of things. Been doing some app picking up on the Market and it's really just awesome.
A few questions though.
What's with Browser? It lets me select a homepage but when it opens, the Homepage doesn't load. Instead it's the last page I visited. Not a fan of that.
What's the best Video Player out there? I'm using RockPlayer, it's great, but I'd like to lose the ads. If there's no alternative, I wouldn't mind paying the ten bucks, but... if I can avoid this, I'd rather do that.
Also, the Music Player is okay, but I can't seem to get the music to stop. I can pause it, but it doesn't just close out completely.
Thanks for your help, sorry about the noobish questions, but please go easy on me, I'm new -.-
The browser goes to the last page visited because you haven't closed out of the browser completely. You might have just pressed home to get out of the browser, unless you pressed back several times to go to the original page from all the pages that you have viewed, then it will finally go back to the home screens. It will go to the new home page if you press menu, windows, and new window.
I don't have a problem with the stock video player, so I have been using that.
Also, I'm not sure since I don't have a stock rom, but on CM6, if you hold the back button, it forces the apps to close out. You could give that a shot.
The question 1 & 3 are the same actually. The browser and the player still runs in the background, like u just minimize them. They are not closed yet.
To close them the simplest way is to install a thread killer software like ES series or some others.
Q2, I found no better video player [email protected]@
I'm sorry, stock video player? Where's that at? :/
And thanks for the answers on 1 and 3, I'll give both a shot now.

You know, if you have a video file in your memory card and you click on it using a file browser or if its in a directory where the gallery app picks it up (folder named 'videos' etc), it plays automatically.

I'd recommend u root the phone and install "Ad Free", it solves the annoying ads on your phone
There are a ton of video players in the market. I've tried the ones that seem to be most commonly used by XDA folks: ArcMedia, Rockplayer and vplayer. Rockplayer is my favorite so far. It is able to play every video I've tried (might have to toggle hardware decoding to play a few) and has the most usable interface of those I've tried.

Is that a function somewhere? Or is that just on the Home Screen and applies to all Apps?
I'm not really trying to stop anything from running, as opposed to having a certain webpage open everytime I open the Browser and no music playing when I open up Music. For those two Apps, I don't want to be where I "left off."
Also, I did root it and put on CM 6.1.1. For the first time doing something like this, I think it went rather well.
Thanks guys, for any help provided.
Dolphin browser is the one I use and I have no complaints.

Android decides for itself whether to leave an app running when you move away from it, or whether to close it. It usually does a pretty good job.
Most people want the browser to stay at the page they were using so they can go straight back to it. There are task killer apps for Android but it's normally recommended that you stay away from these, since they can cause their own problems.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
Right, I'm not looking to close any apps really. I guess it'd be nice to be able to close an app out, say a game, Browser or Music, but only if you wanted to. If you instead just pressed Home, those apps would stay open so you can go back to them later. But if you were finished with say, surfing the web, you could exit out, it would take you Home like normal.
I don't know, I understand totally about Android and it's ability to multi-task. I'm not really even looking to close things out completely, but if that's the distinction between opening an App from where you last had it to opening an App to it's "home screen" then so be it.
Yeah, it's kind of a different mentality. Pressing the phone's home button is really more of a "show desktop" than an exit. This means a better user experience for the average user though (since as was said before, everything is back to the way they last had it and the programs will load faster since they weren't removed from memory to begin with). Whenever I want to leave the browser on its home screen, I simply close all of its windows before leaving the app (just like opening a new window, closing the last open one will make it go to the home page).
With a custom rom, you can do more of what you are saying. I know with CM, you can assign a long press of the back button to exit out of the foreground program (so now pressing home will leave the app running and long-pressing back will completely exit out of it). I believe the MIUI rom allows that as well. Alternatively, you can use a task manager to do the same thing (though maybe not as conveniently---not sure if any of the task managers have a similar shortcut key feature).
Thanks. This is what I was looking for. I have Cyrogen 6.1.1 on my phone now. Could I ask for some assistance in setting up the long press of the back key? Thanks much!
Sure. It's under Settings->Applications->Development. The last option in the list.
Thanks again so much Quinn. I am very happy now! Just a few more questions and I think I'll be good.
1) I'd like to be able to set my Quickkeys to Back, Foward, and Home. Is there a way to do this, preferably without an App? If not, at least a way to clear out the Quickkeys area.
2) What does the Google App package come with exactly?
3) How do I uninstall some of the Apps like Twitter and Facebook? I don't see a way to uninstall those the normal way.
Thanks for all the help!

You can do this by editing your keymap files. An example of an edited one can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837002. The QuickKeys are mapped to user1, user2, and user3. I know you said you didn't want to use an app, but there is a simple one to use called ButtonRemapper (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464). You may be able to install it, use it to quickly edit your keymap file, and then uninstall, but I'm not positive on that. That app page also has a link to a great guide about how keymap files are structured.

I'm assuming you are talking about Google Addons for CM6? You can unzip the file and look in the apps directory, but here's a listing for convenience: CarHomeGoogle, CarHomeLauncher, Facebook, GenieWidget, Gmail, GoogleBackupTransport, GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter, GoogleContactsSyncAdapter, GoogleFeedback, GooglePartnerSetup, GoogleQuickSearchBox, GoogleServicesFramework, googlevoice, HtcCopyright, HtcEmailPolicy, HtcSettings, kickback, LatinImeTutorial, list.txt, Maps, MarketUpdater, MediaUploader, NetworkLocation, OneTimeInitializer, PassionQuickOffice, SetupWizard, soundback, Street, Talk, talkback, Twitter, Vending, VoiceSearch, YouTube.

You can delete the appropriate APK from your /system/app directory. Alternatively, you can simply disable the app with a "pm disable" command in the terminal (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809231). This is usually the safer route---disable the app, make sure your phone is still running properly, then uninstall it if you still want to. If you want a nicer interface for doing all this, you can download TitaniumBackup from the Market (I believe the free version allows both uninstalling and freezing/disabling apps).
Enjoy your new phone!
Dude... open market, click the search button, enter "firefox". Install that. Yes, genuine firefox. Its in beta and still has a few glitches, but ITS FIREFOX!! DO IT!

Battery Monitor Widget (free)= gives you up to the minute updates on how much power your phone is using (or getting, if you're charging). The widget tells you your battery life and clicking on it gives you several options on viewing exactly how fast your battery is draining.
Subsonic (one time donation of ~$10) = my favorite app ever, it sets up your computer as a server your phone can access so that you can play EVERY song you own without having to load it to your phone. I sold my iPod after getting this because, hey, I don't need it anymore. My 32GB iPod Touch is nothing compared to streaming all 300+GB of music I own. Audio Galaxy has a free version but if you haven't been keeping up with your id3 tags, you're screwed.
If you don't like the sense news widget you can get feedr. Not sure how much it costs though, it's a nice alternative and works very well. They do basically the same thing except feedr gives you more options and it's easier to find the rss feeds you want to subscribe to.
Other than that, I just use sense widgets. Hope this helps.

Not all of these are FREE, but look into them anyways.
Customization
Launcher Pro/ADW Launcher - These replace your launcher, or homescreen. They allow you to change a lot of the way the phone looks.
Widget Locker - This replaces your lockscreen, allowing you to change that like a homescreen. You can use custom unlock bars and even add widgets to your lockscreen.
Widgets
SwitchPro - This is my most used widget, its a transparent bar that allows you to turn on/off system settings. I use it for my 3G/4G Radios, Wifi, Bluetooth, and a quick button to turn my phone on vibrate and mute my media.
System Info Widget - If you look at screen-shots around here, you'll run into this widget. It monitors your Battery, Temperature, RAM, Disk Space, and free space on your SD card. Its a handy tool to check how much space you really have.
SMS Unread - This gives you an icon for Email, Messages and Phone that has a little bubble to show if you have new Email/Text/Calls. I keep it on my lockscreen, since my notification bar is hidden.
Applications
APK Installer - Install APK's downloaded from the internet. As you spend more time on XDA you'll find a ton of custom APK's, free programs, and beta releases.
Titanium Backup - This is the MUST have APP if your going to be trying new ROMS, it backs up your apps and data so you don't have to go through the tedious task of reinstalling them all.
AdFree - Removes Ad's from your phone. First thing I install personally.
Lookout - Mobile security, find your phone if lost through GPS, Wipe your phone remotely, backup all your data, and scans for malicious APK's.
Apps are a funny thing though, It's half about functionality, and half about what suits you personally. So I'd recommend you dig into the market and check out XDA to find the apps that you can't live without.
Thx for the subsonic..... trying it out shortly

I haven't used it in a while but I preferred Mecanto over Subsonic because it is free and actually loads your music onto their servers so you dont have to leave your computer on to listen to your tunes.
MIQLive - Cloud management app (http://miqlive.com/tour)
Dropbox - Cloud Storage
Handcent SMS - A great SMS application

I used Subsonic for sometime the only that really got to me was the fact that you had to keep your computer on all the time if you wanted access to your music library.
I recently discover Mecanto, it's free and it stores all of your music on their servers, meaning you can pull it up anytime anywhere without your computer having to be on. It's truly amazing! Many people havent heard about it but they are doing a great job. I'm not sure how long it is going to last free, so if I were you I would get it ASAP. It doesnt have all the tweaks as subsonic but the music is streamed in CD quality and it's fine.
As far as other must have apps...
Handscent
Wireless Tether
Pulse - Amazing news reader and very easily customizable
AdFree - blocks ads...lots of debate about this one...
Dolphin Browser
Dropbox - Probably the God of all other apps
Epistle - Takes notes on your phones and automatically syncs with your dropbox! I use this all the time!
Folder Organizer - If you use folders this is the app to have!
Sportacular - to keep up with sports, sends you realtime updates
Music Junk - stream and download music for free!
TV Show Stream - Watch tv shows free on your phone
Where's My Droid - God this comes in handy all the time
Zedge - download millions of ringtones and wallpapers
Wordfeud - it's scrabble, play with friends or
The best app in my opinion that streams music from your pc is audiogalaxy alot better then subsonic and its free.
Yes but audiogalaxy has a 3GB limit. Oh and your computer needs to be on as well.

Huh, I didn't realize there was a limit... guess I'll keep Subsonic installed as a backup then.

These are the apps on my phone:
Google Voice - Love this app. First thing I install and set up.
LauncherPro Plus - Launcher replacement.
AndroZip Pro - For all your archive needs.
BeamReader - Best PDF viewer out there.
Better Terminal Emulator - If you're a nerd like me, the terminal is a must.
Chrome to Phone - Look things up on the computer and send links to the phone.
Digital Clock - I like being able to customize my nightstand clock.
Documents to Go - Office software.
Key Ring - For all those store club cards my girlfriend insists I use.
Pandora - For the music I don't own.
Root Explorer - Best file manager out there.
Barcode Scanner/Shopper/Shop Savvy - Really pisses off retail workers.
SME Storage - Why limit yourself to Dropbox? Use all of them, including Google!
Square - Accept payments for services using your phone.
VPlayer - Best movie player I've found so far.
WinAmp - For the music I own.
Wireless Tether - Phone as a wireless modem.
I need to check out some of these apps people have posted now...
another option for music is Musikcube. your pc does need to be on but it is also free and no size limit.
just giving options.
IPCam viewer lets you look at traffic cams in your area (if you have any). Quite nice for watching traffic or weather.

AirDroid 2 Enters Invite-Only Beta With Access From Any Network update 9 dec 12

If you're like me, you regularly forget your data cable at home, in hotels or at the 24-hour Pokemon Trading Card Repository. In such cases, 2011's New App of the Year, AirDroid, is a lifesaver. It's an incredibly comprehensive remote management app that lets you access your Android device via a desktop web browser, complete with file management, app installations, photo browser, and lots more. The creators are ready to step up their game with the second version of AirDroid, and have set up an invite-only beta.
The only feature confirmed by the AirDroid team is the ability to create an account and log into remote management from anywhere, which presumably includes mobile networks. This would mirror various PC remote access services, with the notable exception of actual screen control. Given the amount of polish that the original AirDroid already shows, I'm sure there will be plenty more crammed in as well.
Invites should be going out soon, so sign up if you want to get in. The beta will be three months long, give or take, after which everyone else should be able to join in the party. And if you haven't checked out the original yet, what are you waiting for

The great thing about AirDroid is that it works - it's easy to start up, and functions flawlessly (in my experience). The interface is also very polished - mimicking a desktop launcher complete with moveable icons, a task bar, and controls that allow you to do just about anything.
One of the most impressive features is the ability to access SMS messages, manage them, and send messages right from a web browser. Users can also manage contacts, uninstall/backup apps (AirDroid will download your apps as apk files), browse files, access the Android Market, and manage music and ringtones, in addition to the ability to look at phone information from CPU status to battery level and beyond.
Best of all, AirDroid is completely free from the Android Market. With all the powerful features it offers, this app is certainly worth checking out.

i am using airdroid a lot at home, because it is working very good and very fast and the UI is very good, but the only problem in my opinion is that you need to connect to a shared wifi net....is there any program witch uses the WIFI direct function of the samsung galaxy s2 or that i can log in into a adhoc network?

+1 for this.
What I would like to be able to do, is control my phone that is connected to wifi through work's connection, with my desktop which is connected to a different network, that way i'm not constantly looking like i'm on my phone all the time
