ETA for Root? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

This would be my first Samsung device and I'm not sure how hard it is to get root with Samsung devices but anyone want to guess how long it would take after the device is released? Or provide insight onto what is needed to be able to produce a root method for Samsung devices?

Nexus = fastboot oem unlock
Root is instant, it doesn't need any exploits, just a custom recovery.

Many thanks Rusty!. I have a feeling I will be very pleased with this device.

as already stated above, since the nexus one.... fastboot oem unlock

fastboot oem unlock.... The three most beautiful words EVER!
I've rooted both the N1 and the Nexus S....both were a breeze and a joy to root.
It's a tablet dammit! Not a BIG phone....

Just to confirm, is this basically the idea?
1. Unlock Bootloader: fastboot oem unlock
2. Flash CWM Image: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
3. Flash Superuser: Boot into CWM and choose Superuser.zip
And that's it?

also it's best to root it right away

That's too much work, on the sgs2 all you need to do is...
1. flash kernel with odin... that's it

Yeah even if it was not a nexus phone, Samsung phones are super easy to root

Yeah but you have to wait for insecure kernel etc. Fastboot OEM unlock works out of the box.

Let's hope that holds.
So far, though, I am a pretty big Samsung fan. Super Amoled, easy to root, generally good hardware. Not too crazy on Touchwiz, but a non-issue with this phone.
I hate how people complain endlessly about the build quality. I have seen HTC and Apple phones, which are praised for their excellent build quality fall apart (or in the case of the iPhone 4, get screen cracks). Someone I know works in a store that repairs broken glass screens for phones. Apparently, about 90% of of his phones are iPhone.
Getting back on topic, if the past is any indication, getting root should be a simple affair.

Sounds good. Going to be a pain waiting for the device now. LOL

Yeah so true, who thought placing 2 sheets of glass on a phone was a good idea lol.
Samsung/Google phones are so much easier to root than anything else.

Noobish question since I didn't own a Nexus before:
Is there a chance that the GN has a built-in flash counter like in the SGS II? I know they found a way to reset that counter, but I'm just curious if Samsung could built this into a Nexus device as well or if Google wouldn't allow that.
Regards

Well the Nexus S still had the Samsung download mode, so it's quite possible.

[Q] Will Cyanogenmod support Optimus G

I'm hoping the At&T and Sprint phones will be supported; it looks like a phone with great specs.
There's no telling for sure but with this phone being a flagship, it probably will be included eventually.
Probably comes with a locked bootloader.. in which case, CM is a no-go..
However, if it's unlocked, there should be awesome development on this phone. If you plan to buy the phone, I would suggest waiting for someone to confirm this has an unlocked bootloader.
I've never owned a lg phone before. Does lg usually lock the bootloader on their phones? Are they encrypted or are they able to be unlocked?

I've never had one either but i've been lurking on the forums for other LG phones and everyone complains of the lack of support. Too bad, I like the specs a lot. But, as that other guy said, if it does become a flagship it should get pretty frequent updates.

I don't remember all the details but, I know with the official 2.2 update they made an active attempt to inhibit modding.
I think the Galaxy series just has enough support that it quickly overcomes any issues.
I've generally assumed there are enough people getting galaxy devices to overcome any such issues..
I'll google a bit and see what comes up..I have a hard time trying to understand why any carrier/mfr locks down phones..
On Att I have owned the Captivate, S2, S3 and Note. All were easily to install custom roms. Bootloader never locked. For some reason Samsung and Att has always been a safe bet from my experience.

Samsung and lg usually don't lock bootloaders HTC and Motorola do... HTC usually puts out an official unlock though... the Verizon Moto's usually get support too... not sure why LG decided to lock the bootloader on the OG... The Samsung's have been unloocked because samsung had the Nexus device. The Nexus is stripped to show the raw power of the os... they should really just make all phones have unlocked bootloaders

I personally still feel it's a bit early to jump the gun and say why things are the way they are. They may have had to lock it for launch since At&t can be a PITA.
I mean Samsung can say "HAHAHAHA, BYE." And At&t suddenly loses out on a lot of impressive kit. Note II, SGS3, and others. Sure At&t still has iPhone but, Samsung is a major android player they don't want to lose.
LG? They probably exert a little more control over.
Samsung is definitely the next best selling phone maker to Apple... they advertise more than other android makers so people associate with them... Sammy's always get compared to the iPhone while people are like the htc what I've never heard of them I get that all day at work

The Droid X came with a locked bootloader and it eventually was supported by CM. It took a while and a couple software leaks to get there though.
To update this thread, there is a strong chance that Cyanogen Mod will have support for this device.
Ricardo Cerqueira would be the person to ask.
Pay attention to the AT&T LGOG Dev forum in the next few days, it seems lie something big is in the works. Hoping for an unlock, and then devs can start building ROMs. Hopefully Cyanogenmod won't be far behind.

The unlock is most certainly coming and as of today, Nov 20 th... the bootloader has been cracked and is ready to install on the at&t and Sprint versions of the phone
Well it looks like the bootloader has been unlocked completely for the USA/CANADA/Korea versions and of course easy root tools have been released. Honestly, I can't imagine it being that difficult now that everything is in place, especially with the similarity to Nexus 4.
Any update to this at all?
I have done it. I have:
1. Rooted
2. Unlocked my bootloader
3. Flashed a custom recovery
4. Flashed CyanogenMod
5. Installed Google apps
All is fine. Except what matters most, my 3G data... 4G is not available in my area but i assume it is not working either. I think WiFi is working, but for now, that is all. I will repost if I get it to work, but for now, be careful my friends. From here I will troubleshoot, if I cannot get it working, I will create a nandroid backup and go back to stock JellyBean

If you think you have to root a Nexus device you DO NOT have enough knowledge on technology to own a Nexus device. The bootloader is unlockable, there is never a need to root a Google Flagship Development Phone.

This response proves my point, you do not know enough about development to own a flagship Google device. It has nothing to do with the gnex's "superiority". Google flagship devices have the open option to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery. Root is never necessary on a nexus branded device and if you have to ask how to root a phone that doesn't require rooting you probably shouldn't be unlocking it in the first place. I'm was not being rude in my last post and nothing I said had any relevance to your mindless banter about slow performance and unresponsiveness. Please just return your gnex and get a Motorola RAZR flip phone, that is more in the area of computer tech knowledge you belong in. Don't bother responding, your last response killed enough of everyone's brain cells.

I'd be coming from Samsung too then, have a S6 and the battery bug has totally ruined it for me. I also have a $520 offer out on a G4 brand new in box right now, keeping my fingers crossed its accepted before someone else buys it haha. The root + potential of a BL unlock on the way definitely gave me the extra push I needed besides SD card and extra batteries!
I don't think any of the LGs ever were Bootloader unlocked. ALTHOUGH we just used hacks to bypass the lock and install a custom recovery. I had a Verizon G2 and rooting was pretty straight up, but Lollipop is a tough cookie to crack.
Fortunately the Stock LG roms are pretty slim and work very well. I used Stock LG on the G2 the entire 2 years. It was just super stable and had features that you couldn't find anywhere else.
No Root or BL access as of yet. All of our Devs have Root Access, it is just a matter of them attempting to package it in a safe and noob friendly process before the gen. population gets their hands on it, so just be patient and remember, Rome was not built in a day.

Locked bootloader

I think one of the best things that we all love about android is ability to change your phone and add what you want via root. My question is this, if the future of android is to lock all bootloaders, why should we stay with android and not get an I phone? If I can't get viper4android I'm not sure if I'm gonna stay with android. What are your thoughts?

Everyone that has a iPhone isn't dumb. It's not about which OS is the best because they both have their plus and minus. The thing is that android is starting to lock their phones down just like Apple. The options that we all love about android are starting to fade (bootloader, removable battery, sd card). So if this keeps going on, android will be very similar to Apple, which is something none of us want.

Folks, cut it out. This conversion can't be constructive and inflammatory at the same time. Please be respectful and let's have a mature discussion about this.
That being said, I thought I saw someone who said they got in touch with a Google rep who said the bootloader will unlocked, at least from the Play Store. Take it with a grain of salt, since not all manufacturers' reps know the difference between a bootloader and carrier locks, but this is Google we're talking about.
Now I'm not the most savy on bootloaders, more just an open source dev. But the nexus 6 I got from a verizon store had a locked boot loader. The nexus 6p I had for a short time had a locked boot loader. But they were unlocked fairly easily. From what I have always seem every phone had a locked boot loader that requires it to be unlocked to allow access and write to protected partitions. But the issue that I know is when in gets encrypted is when the issue arises. Without getting the verizon models in hand by a dev, we don't currently know if it is encrypted yet, or has this already been discovered? I highly doubt any verizon rep on the phone or on a chat will know the answer to that question. I believe the htc 10 on verizon has an encrypted bootloader, but it also had the htc bootloader, I assume the pixel is going to have the google boot loader. I just personally wanted to clarify it for my self if my understanding is correct, from someone who has a better grasp on this.

The fact that this guy has the phone already makes me think he's unique. Possibly a developer that 1) already unlocked it and just put everything back in just to do an unboxing video or 2) it came that way to him since he is or may be a developer or reviewer.
Either way it's promising that it can be unlocked. All the Nexus phones came locked but were easily unlocked. The Verizon one worries me, but I imagine if it's the exact same model as the Google store version, it shouldn't be hard to get it unlocked by 3rd party means. I'm just waiting on full confirmation before I make my purchase.
Thanks for the video.

Don't even bother calling Verizon to ask. They will emphatically say "yes it absolutely comes unlocked!" In reality they are referring to the carrier lock, not bootloader. They have no clue on bootloaders.

All depends the 5t is much faster at pretty much everything. The note was too long for me.. and i did not like the Samsung skin on android. Also the note 8 selfie at dark is just trash to much noise. The one 5t is much better. I am more of a stock Android person so to me it was a good deal. Its very close to a pixel. Also thought the screen would be an issue. Honestly cant tell much of a difference. Never used the spen. I mean NOT ONCE... So that dint matter to me.

Most custom kernels have a SafteyNet bypass. Paired with Magisk, you can do everything a locked non-rooted user can.
I want to test T-Mobile's reception in my area as Verizon is so expensive. I ordered the 5t as the reviews were excellent. I plan to use the 5t as my work phone. I have not played with the 5t yet. That said, the Note 8 is an unbelievable phone. You can get root on it but I went back to stock. I use the Action Launcher with the Google Now plug in. I too hate Touchwiz.

So at that point, the only difference if I don't want to flash roms yet is I won't be able to take OTAs and need to dirty flash the full zip and non-incremental?
To me the 5t is a much better phone. As i am more of a stock android guy. So i probably will never buy another samsung or any other phone thats not near stock android. Just love pure simple stock Android. No gimmicks or overwhelmed with features

Not exactly. You can take an OTA if you uninstall Magisk and restore stock boot.img.

Great minds think alike. I literally powered on my phone and hooked it up to the PC so I could get the reset over with right out of the box.
