[Q] Help with launcher lag - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im currently using XboarderMOD AOSP Gingerbread v3.0.1 and there is a considerable amount of lag when scrolling back and forth through homescreens with the stock launcher. Ive found that this completely goes away once i open and close the app drawer, but the lag will come back once i open any app and go back to home. This is a problem ive had with many roms, the only one that doesnt do it is virtuous g-lite. Anyone else have this problem or know whats causing it and how to fix it?

I havent used this ROM, but I similarly experienced when used Virtuos Unity 1.31 this is maybe due to Sense 3.5. Maybe it is because the RAM is not enough. Remember DZ Ram is only 512 MB.
Now, I am back with the stock ROM and it runs smooth ....( but I m planning to flash VIrtuos Fusion 2.0)...

i doubt its a lack of ram, i have over 200mb free when it happens.

really? I have Flyer, it has 1 GB RAM and Sense UI is running so smooth
In DZ, I even overclocked it to 1.5 GHz (the same clock speed as Flyer) but still lagging
And, last night I flash Virtuos Sense 2.00. It runs so smooth... try it

Why not give a home replacement launcher a try? Or have you already...? I always recommend LauncherPro+.

Buy ADW EX, and then install this
https://market.android.com/details?id=kov.adwtheme.bakedgoods&hl=en
Very smooth

i prefer the stock launcher, adw, launcher pro, go launcher etc. are all choppy when i use live wallpapers, which is my reason for liking the stock launcher.

I think its a hardware acceleration problem (as in, there's no HW accel). The stock launcher won't be as smooth as aftermarket launchers that use different resources to increase smoothness.

[Q] cyanogen or virtous????!?!?!?

which one the is the best rom????
virtous or cyanogen????!?!?!?!?!
Do you want sense? If so get virtuous.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I use the recovery to dual-ROM between both. I like CyanogenMod's stability and the ability to overclock to 1.8Ghz on Virtuous.
I've been bouncing back and forth from the two since the g2 has been rooted and i respect both... virtuous is good only if u like sense ui. cm6 is faster and gives me fewer errors and runs more smoothly... i got launcher pro with the sense dock and it works just PERFECTLY
Its a matter of sense vs vanilla on 'roids lol. I have been using CyanogenMod since my G1. It's updated regularly and there is a huge community of people for any kind of issues you might have.
goo with cynogen it has a sexy boot up and its fast asssssss hell!!!!! theres less errors at i think you can get a Sense Theme with launcher pro i think
thank you guys for all your help..
You can also get a sense theme with ADW I switch back and forth between LPP and ADW, both are equally good. Now the matter of Sense if you like big HUGE aesthetic visuals then go with Sense if you want more functionality go with CM.
I always used to like Sense back in the G1 days now I can't stand it. But I run Virtuous on one of my G2s and CM and my other one. I recommend you get lcddensity from the market and put CM on about anywhere from 170 -190 see how you like it, then try Sense on about 190 - 200 and see the difference. I will never go back to DPI at 240
but it's up to you...
also Sense has hibernate which is cool.
Go with Virtuous.
It's just so sexy, and Virtuous actually detects my contacts on my SIM, while CM does not.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know about this.

Sense has quick bootup
2.5 seconds from power off state to on state.

alright ! thanks for the help! your the BEAST!
how do you get such a fast boot time?
Mine takes nearly a minute to turn on!
it depends wether or not you want Sense or not. Cyanogen is still vanilla android with extra features. Virtuous is a port of Sense for the G2 from the DZ
also if i just found out that Cyan 6.1 hasa feature that changes the notification bar to black if thats one of you main likes of sense.
I am running Cyanogen 6.1 RC3 mainly because i love Vanilla Android and sense looks pleasant but feels more bloated.
just my 0$.02
i like sense ui but i prefer cm
if u like sense, go for virtuous
I just got my G2 today and have tried both CM6 and Virtuous. I think CM6 is a better daily driver. While Virtuous appeals to my go out on the weekend eyecandy phone. I like both.
Well i have been running virtuous for 2 weeks now and i havent even thought about trying cyanogen yet since sense is so sexy and fast for me even though i havent overclocked it....no lag at all and just love the features they added for the desire z .... cyanogen is faster obviously but try virtuous....im sure u will love it

Is it just me? (ADW vs Launcher Pro)

Running CM7RC1 and it seems like Launcher Pro is waaaaay more smooth in terms of screen transitions than the ADW Launcher that comes with the ROM.
Anyone else notice this?

yes. I was a fan of ADW up until I had a friend show me his phone with the same CM7 nightly and launcher pro. I haven't used ADW since.
I think it's hit or miss, but a lot of people have been having issues with LP being really sluggish on CM7. It worked fine for me when I used it and I actually like it better, but since I'm flashing and wiping so often, I won't bother setting it up until a stable release.

You can backup your launcher pro settings, to include home screen, you just have to re-add the widgets.

Smoothest gb rom?

imcurrently on cm7 rc2 with launcher pro but im beyond sick of the homescreen lag on adw and launcher pro and would perfer a stock launcher that runs smooth as smooth can get. is it even possible to have the nexus s lwp running on a rom without any lag? i tried oxygen and redux but 4 some reason after i reset my phone, i get sim card errors. posted multiple helpposts but to no avail. any1 have suggestions? its to the point im contemplating going back to stock just so i feel stable again
ADWLauncherEx works a dream on CM7. Search the forum for the launcher built by Google. It runs smooth. As for a Gingerbread rom, CM7 works well and I have no issues with it at all (currently using RC2). Oxygen is good but I had rebooting and bootloop issues with it because it is useless. Tried Redux about 2 month ago and it was ok to use. For me at least, CM7 works the best but go ahead and try them out.
You can try Zeam, very fast and stable.

I can vouch for Zeam too it's very quick and smooth, very nice launcher with some nice tweakable bits (dock, screen rotate, etc.). I'm using GingerVillain 1.6 and I'm very pleased with the results although using Launcher Pro as got bored with Zeam (only because I like to change things fairly regularly!). GingerVillain is a slimed down CM7 from what I can work out although never used CM7 myself. It still comes with CM Settings built in and the notification widgets which I believe started life in CM Roms. If you find a really smooth GB rom I'd be interested in your thoughts as I'm always on the look out for a good smooth/fast up to date Rom!

I was the same, no issues with CM7, but I did like Oxygen, so I flashed it again last night, boot loop within the first 12 hours. Found a supposed fix this morning. Apparently the time_in_state file is only designed to handle a max of 20 cpu steps, making the time_in_state file read only is supposed to fix the issue as a temporary measure. I've not had a loop since, but it was only 8 hours ago that I made the change, so time will tell. As far as smooth goes though, Oxygen is the smoothest I've tried if you don't experience the bootloops. (Some do some don't)
How about trying them all like everyone else does instead of asking pointless questions?

[Q] Rosie app drawer lag?

Ok so I don't know what the hell is going on but for some reason the Rosie app drawer from any sense GB Rom is laggy. There is always some sort of lag, I don't know if its just me or other people are experiencing it. The super smooth homescreen scrolling was made but is the app drawer posible to be optimised?
If you are willing to change the rom then may i suggest getting the rcmix3d runny 3.1 rom so far the the best rom i have tried it has no lags or freezes and the battery life is also excellent.
That's because of the crappy coded sense apps. every single one of them is laggy. not much you can do about. OC helps a little but it will be still laggy.

I was running Runny 3.1 the other day, I flash all sorts of Sense roms and the only thing I have problems with is the app drawer. It's not exactly lag, just a lower FPS than a lot of other UI elements such as the homescreen.

Thanks, but I'm already running this. As Flussen said this is about the app drawer. Is anyone else having this issue? It's easily seen when one of the unlimited scrolling mods are applied.
Do you mean the lag when you touch the ▩ to open the app drawer?
I have the same problem, it's not much, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 of a second but it's annoying. I don't like the iPhone but you have to admit everything's super smooth there. Unlike my DHD on Sense 3. It feels like a slightly underperforming PC.
I tried both the Supercharger and Smooth Sense 3 but I'm not sure there is any effect at all.
And definitely nothing about the app drawer lagging.
I don't know why only some people report this, either most people don't care/notice or it really only happens on some phones. That'd be strange though. Has anyone tried the official HTC Sense 3 ROM, does the problem occur there as well?
I'm thinking about downgrading to Sense 2, there isn't much I'd miss from 3 besides the lock screen and that can be patched into Sense 2.
Is there an easy way to flash any Sense 3 ROM with Sense 2? Maybe just by replacing the rosie apk?

Fastest rom without launcher (aosp)

Hi guys. basicly my favourite roms are miui and ilwt350 but I would like to make them even faster by using aosp. Is there a way to do this? Or roms that are aosp are bad and i really need launcher?
I am leaning towards ilwt350 but it comes with adw launcher/go launcher and I am not really into one or another, so It wouldnt hurt to try it aosp if there is a way

ok, i don't know if AOSP ROMs can run without a launcher... but try this: in ILWT, theres an ILWT.txt file, you can edit that file to make the flashing not install any launcher... (launcher=none)... try it, but i don't think it'll work though

it don't work. Rom doesnt start then
That's only there in case you want to install a custom launcher using the function to install custom apps. You're saying you want to install the AOSP launcher?

Make sure to hit the thanks button in his post if it helped you.
I don't think the OP understands what the Launcher does in Android? Or what AOSP means?
Not to rag on you, but just want to clear these things up before we go any further.
The long answer:
AOSP: Short for "Android Open Source Project"; it's like the complete vanilla version of what Android was designed to be. Minus all the skins (Sense, Blurr, Touchwiz, etc...) and carrier bloat, it is the essence of what the AndroidOS is.
Launcher: The GUI (Graphical User Interface) of Android, the stock (AOSP) version of Android has this to access the various parts of the OS (Phone, App Drawer, Contacts, Apps, etc...). There are various other kinds of launchers out there with different features (ADW Launcher, LauncherPRO, GOLauncherEX, etc..) and carrier themed versions (Sense, Blurr, Touchwiz, etc...).
The short answer:
The lightest weight launcher that you could possibly use is the stock AOSP launcher. Android cannot function (graphically) without a launcher (to my knowledge).
ok thanks. I think I needed an explanation of some kind even tho i thought I know what it is
I am asking for pure android launcher. There is always, sense, touchwiz, launcherpro or adw.
Or shouldnt I even bother? I am kinda used to sense but can't find any "perfect" version. best sense for Z is 2,1 but virtuous sense 2.0.0 have this major problem and don't keep apps in memory after I go to home screen. Listening to music, pause, check messages, go back and pause is reset to start of the song (or 3hour podcast and then I have to search where Ive finished listening)
games are constantly restarting every minute like plants vs zombies.
I guess that You will advise me to use launcher. What is fastest with ilwt then? stock adw?
also another question. hd videos are working great on sense 3,5 roms while I have to oc to hell on every other rom and they stil jitter. Why is that? Other than default player doesnt help.
Thanks for help
I'm using the paid version of ADW, which is ADW EX. It's totally worth the money and it is A LOT SMOOTHER than the free counterpart. If you can spare a tiny amount of money it's definitely worth buying!
By HD you mean videos that are at about 1280x720, right? If so have you tried MX Video Player? If not then download it from the market (it's free).
Works very smooth at 1,1GHz, try this video as a preview http://www.tools4movies.com/Droid/nfs_hp_2010.mp4
Yeah. I am talkinga about .mp4 720p video, like trailers or movies.
I have 3 movies as my preview and those work just like every other move, no stuttering or whatsoever on sense 3,5 but on any other system, they fail. on cm350 ilwt, Gallery doesnt see tham and MX video player play them only software. HW is not even avaible
Try downloading the MX Player NEON codec. It's in the market.

I had the same problem as you. I am currently running G2Slim. It's the fastest and smoothest/fastest 'vanilla like' rom you can find and it has SUPERB battery life! I mean you get like 200+ free ram after booting The only price you pay is that it's ugly and it misses some of the great sense things like the dialer application.
If you just cant say farewell to sense, in this post I've listed some ROM's that have sense elements but not the Sense launcher (ROSIE). So basically they are senseless ROM's that still have sense (like the dialer etc).
P.S. The smallest launcher, to my knowledge, is ZEAM Launcher. You can grab it from the market or you can find the original post by the author here
I've been on several different launchers for GB now:
Stock
ADW
LauncherPRO
GOLauncherEX
Sense
MIUI (I know this is a ROM itself, but talking more about the UI)
Of the launchers, for AOSP ROMs, I would ALWAYS ditch the stock launcher (whether it be Stock, ADW or LauncherPRO) for GOLauncherEX. It comes with the majority of the conveniences of Sense without the RAM hogging bloat. For me, it seems to be the best balance of functionality and speed. There were features that were missing in the other launchers (Resizing any widget, full screen calendar widgets, etc...) that I really couldn't live without.
I would suggest trying them out if you have the time. Spend about 5-7 days with each launcher and figure out which suits your needs the best. My setup was always Virtuous G-Lite with GOLauncherEX and it worked out perfectly for me. Insane battery life (talking 3 days on a single charge with moderate use with the stock battery) and great speed (no lockups or lag).
Good luck!
Thanks for reply guys. I am still checking thing out. I want to do some good couple of days testing witch each rom.
Right now i am ditching cm7 ilwt350. Its kinda glitchy. Especially screen not rotating or only half of screen rotating etc.
