DIY (or DIM) Smart cover for my tab 10.1 - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Accessories

Hey guys. I wanted to share with y'all a case I made for my tab 10.1.
https://www.dropbox.com/gallery/2781562/2/HTC Inspire 4G/case?h=6d1416
I bought thew following items and found that none of them worked very well for me.
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/protec...-cleaning-cloth-for-samsung-p7510-black-82402
and
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/protective-pc-back-case-for-samsung-galaxy-tab2-10-1-black-68713
I was also very envious of the ipad 2 smart cover.
So what I did was cut the smart cover for the tab and attached it to the back case.
I had some left over 3M carbon fiber from covering my viewsonic gtab and used that to attach the two as you can see in the photos.
It's in alpha right now, but it works great! The 3M carbon fiber holds to two components together very well. It works as a great hinge. Once I get my heat gun from work, I'm going to cover the whole back case with it and it will have a very seamless look.
I have not found another case like this one so I wanted to share how I made you guys.
P.s. the above smart cover comes in many different colors.
http://s.dealextreme.com/search/p7510

you make it by yourself, that is a very happy thing. but for me . i dont want.
i bought 2 directly from
http://www.papadigitals.com/advanced_search_result.html?keywords=smart+case+p7510&x=0&y=0
so many colors that i can choose. and the quality is fine.

Cool! Thanks for posting that site.

I ordered a black one, and got shipping confirmation. Just hoping that the typos on the website aren't an indication of quality...

My worries were unfounded! Awesome cover, fits perfectly, will post review soon.

I bought that same cover from ebay for 26$. so what you posted is a good deal.
However, i dont like it:
1) too heavy
2) makes it bulky because its actually a case, not a cover. An exta layer of ugliness.
3) related to #3, the extra layer is due to the fact that the gtab is not magnetic, so the cover flip flops away if not held tightly downwards
4) its a cheap piece-o-junk. have it for 5 weeks, one crack on the plastic part and a rip on the fabric
Sent from my GT-P7500M using XDA App

I actually got another smart cover like case, which works fairly well. Can't post the link, but if you search on ebay "3 fold smart cover", that's the design. Has magnets to keep the screen closed when not using it.

Platinum Series Case for HTC EVO 4G from Best Buy - $30

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Platinu...199186619&skuId=9943616&st=evo case&cp=1&lp=1
That is the case I got from Best Buy today. I compared it to the silicone one they had for $21 but I ended up with this one because it seems more durable and if you lay the phone on the screen the case lifts the screen off the surface its laying on to help protect the screen as well.
I think $32 out the door was a little pricey, but to protect my new phone it is definitely worth it.
They were sold out by the time I got there. I really wanted the one with the clip. Can't find them now. They are made by Seido from what I am hearing which they sell for $49.99 so it's a pretty good deal and solid imo.
can we get some pics? the product wasn't displayed good on there site
it's a great case. The insides are felt lined & padded. Also I had no problem slipping it in w/ the invisashield. The back of the case goes slightly past the camera lens so the phone isn't laying on it. Then there is a very small lip on the front to keep the screen from resting on a surface. A pretty solid case to use for now until more people start manufacturing for in. Hopefully serpent cases make something for this

its literally the same as the seido case that someone else posted a topic about. look at that topic and thres pictures and in the general section someone posted a video review of the seido case.
the best buy platinum case is just a re-branded seido case.
I had purchased it because a sales rep told me it was a part of the $30 bundle with the car charger and invisible shield. At the register it turns out that the rep gave me the wrong case and I bought it anyways. Early today I got my max coverage Invisible Shield installed and returned that case along with the Shield they had sold me.
The case is decent looking, definitely much better than most of the cases out now. I hope this phone gets the kind of variety in accessories that the iPhone does.

I think this specific case is different unless the picture Best Buy is using is incorrect. The cut outs are different. Also, Seidio themselves said in another forum that Best Buy has a Platinum Series case not made by them.
If the OP can post some pics we'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
There are two different Platinum Series case designs for the EVO @ Best Buy sold 3 different ways. The have the Seidio style horizontal split by itself, Seidio style with holster, and one styled like the Bodyglove case (vertical split). I picked up the Bodyglove style case - it's "rubberized" all the way around and felt lined inside.
:S thats expensive why dint you go to sprint? the body glove for the evo looks awesome I saw it at best buy and i dint like the back cover while the one in sprint i was and it was like 24 dollars.. and online its 19.99

bsim85 posted a tiny pic, but here are some large ones:
It's OK. I've still got the original "screen protector" on my phone because I haven't tried it at work (I'm not going to open the Invisible Shield or 16GB memory card I bought until I verify the phone works everywhere I need it to, but the case comes in a resealable package so no worries there).
The back of the case is hard and has felt lining inside. The front part of the case (it splits around the edge of the device like the Body Glove) is more rubbery. It comes apart the same was as the Body Glove, with a coin in a corner slot. The camera lens is recessed a couple of millimeters from the edge of the case. When on it's back the case rests not on the overall rubberized surface but on the smooth edges of the case around the camera opening and the bottom ports so it could still slide around in your car this way. Will I keep it long term? Probably not. Will it suffice until something better comes along? Yes.
EDIT...
I should note that the case doesn't look as blue-grey in real life as it does in the pictures.
I bought the case at Best Buy and it's great. Radioshack had Zaggs for $15 plus the 20% off accessories if you got it in the morning. I got the case at Best Buy and it's excellent. A bit pricey, but one of the better cases I've seen. Plus the silicon cases sometimes get caught up in your pocket and harder to pull out.

Is this A EVO case?
cause it seems to have more cut outs in the side pic than the EVO has buttons on the side.
yeah, i went to BB on friday and there was a sign showing that the Platinum case, the invisashield screen protector, and a rocket dog car charger were on sale all together for $45.
the case is overall is very nice, i like how the screen is recessed and how the case does not get stuck in your pocket like a silicone case does.
i think it was a good deal for the money, seeing as how i needed car charger because the hero uses a mini usb port.

I bought one from BB (with holster for $34.99 (giftcard)), and it def doesn't look like that. Mine's a much more rubbery look / feel. It's black. The cut-out's on yours seem much more prominent and I don't have one on the lower right side (why is one even there? just the phone volume on the upper part of the right side...).
Strnage
I got slider case instead of the snap case. Reason being if you drop your phone on a corner, the slider case isn't going to split open like an egg leaving the yolk (EVO) splattered on the ground.

I dont know what Seidio is trying to pull but on the inside of the fake phone cutout (on the Platinum) it clearly states Seidio, Inc, Houston Texas.
Plus, I ordered a Innocase II and compared the two side by side. They are identical. Save you cash and buy the Platinum.

As I stated previously there are (2) different case designs from Best Buy - one like the Seidio Innocase and one like the Body Glove. The one I pictured is indeed for the EVO (it came with a "fake" cardboard EVO inserted in it). The "extra" port cutout you're seeing is how you take it off the phone - you insert a coin and twist it to pop the two halves apart (JUST like the Body Glove case).

Looks nice, but could we fold the cover flap fully to the back, in case we want to hold the tab in book reading mode
I just ordered one of those from amazon.
Bad thing is that for me, shipping was even more expensive (15$) than the cover itself (14$)...
I think you can fold the cover flap fully to the back, in case you want to hold the tab in book reading mode. Take a look at a video on youtube about this case, but ipad version. Search for "Review: Acase Slim Leather Folio Case with Stand for iPad 2".
doesn't look like it. there's no crease on the front cover like the ipad case i have.
i bought one earlier and it should be here next week. now i'll have a matching set for my ipad, gt7 and gt10.1.

Aw man, didn't see that. If only it is a mistake with the pictures and the cover we receive is OK... I think that crease helps you type on the best position. Well, you know better that you have the I pad version.
you can rest the bottom on the "latch" and put in a slightly upraised position. i just find it a little too bouncy when doing that while typing.
I have the same case for my 7" Galaxy Tab and am very happy with it. The quality is that of a much more expensive case. If I had not already bought another case I would be picking one of these up.
Unless I am seeing it wrong in the photos the problem with this case is that you have to constantly detach it from the BOTTOM HALF of the TAB to use it in a tilted position. This is how that $90 Zenus brand carbon fiber case I bought and returned worked. It was a real PITA plus it will eventually wear the paint off the tab.
i prefer that than the extra thickness (like belkin folio case). i haven't had any chipping or scratching on either of my other tablet's yet, but i did bend all those tabs a bit after getting them to make it easier to pull out. i even loosened the cover latches a bit too.

Flip case that is detachable?

Im looking for a flip case where you can detach the 'flip' part of the case. At the moment im using the Samsung Flip case (instead of a screen protector) within a cheap TPU case that has a kickstand. Im finding the camera tricky to use with the flip part of the case getting in the way, so it would be good if i could take it off when needed, then reattach it. :good:
I've done a DIY mod on the flip case - cut off the 'flip' part and stuck it to the TPU with velcro - as you could imagine its far from perfect...
I've been searching for a while but nothing so far.....
Well here's something the case makers seriously have to do.
Imagine something as convenient as the Microsoft tablet detachable keyboard?! But a detachable flip.
I would buy one without thinking twice.

Looks like a practical solution.
However it has a magnetic clasp. If I understood correctly, this is bad for the Note, because it interacts with the digitiser ?

Is there any flip cover that only the front one like apple ipad one? So could use any hardcase...
Thanks for the input.
The Mercury colour case looks good, i'll bear it in mind. There a couple of youtube vids knocking about so i'll do some more research.
As usual, you need a woolly coat to get the things you want...
Detachable front cover case for the iPhone A larger case for the Note would work well.
----
There must be a demand for such a case? I can't be the only one who prefers not to use screen protectors, but finds a flip case gets in the way of using the phone, especially the camera!?
The search continues....
Edit; Found another one;
Luxury window flip case- not sure where the 'luxury' element of the case comes in as to be fair, it looks cheap and nasty!
maybe you can try modding one using valcro

I have one of these : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AIO-BLACK..._MobilePhonesCasesPouches&hash=item2570d08d2f
You can remove the phone relatively easy when you need to use the camera, is a bit fiddly to get to the stylus (but I have large fingers)
the magnetic clasp locks around the rear of the case/phone so does not affect the digitizer.
Hope this helps
I was also looking for a detachable flip casing .....the normal flip casing is uncomfortable feels weird when capturing pictures & recording videos
I bought a blue flip case says official from amazon, it was fine for the first month, but after that, I just took it off, its so uncomfortable to use. any suggestions for some others
I've got one of these - Amazon Link and it's just the job.
Easy to detach and the corners have save my note a couple of times now.

here is the link for the case for the note it is a tpu case with detachable flip http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Gal...919296?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item4d03b8b880
it has a magnet but it doesn't damage the screen it is a very nice case

Thought on the official book cover case?

Does anyone who has owned this case for a bit have any opinion on it? How is the quality and such?

No protection for the bottom part of the tablet. Closing the case does not ensure the screen is actually protected as the part the screen is covered with can slide off of it. Dumped it quickly.

I do agree with some of the comments above however it is my case of choice. I sold a quality noreve leather case and stuck with the original Samsung book cover case as my daily driver with a solution to full protection using another protective case along with it.

You compromise portability by using two of those together. Check the one that was made by Samsung for Galaxy Tab 10.1 with a flap over the bottom part of the device and see how you could avoid using two cases instead of one.
Thank you for your feedback! Where do you get the fancy pen? I really like the thin form of the case. Can see it really well in your pictures.

Yes indeed it was a compromise however the weight of the two together was roughly the same as the leather case I had so for me did not matter. This setup gives me reassuarnce that even after a hard drop, the tablet should be safe whilst transporting as it is whilst on the move, that I am more likely to drop it. Once it it is in the office or at home, it is kept on the desk or on my bed without much risk of dropping and then I have the lightest and practical cover for my specific needs.
I have also purchased another bag that has a secure slot for any 10" tablet with padding around it and is used when I need to carry more than just my tablet with me and similarly when I take the tablet out, it is usually at a desk, this also eliminates the need for me to carry the second housing.
At the time of me buying my case, the one with the securing flap was not available otherwise I probably would have purchased that one instead. Having said that, I still probably would have bought a secondary case for transporting as the Samsung ones are too thin for real protection but are the most practical in my opinion.
The moral here is, if you are considering buying one of these thin cases, it is advisable to consider a second protective case or buy a fully protective leather / pu case that is adequately padded with the downside of it making the tablet feel a lot heavier.

I currently have the White GALAXY Note 10.1, and I had a faux leather case (generic) from Amazon, and gave it about 2 months of use.
After that I decided to risk my money and bet on the official book cover (in white, as well).
I must say it is extremely durable and gorgeous. It has, somehow, a corporate look, it's extremely thin and the back is well protected.
The cover, on the insides, has a thin and soft veil-like texture, and it sort of acts as a screen cleaner, each time you lift up the front part of the cover. (only applies to naked screen).
All in all, it's durable, I have the white for 2 months now and it's still the same pristine white as it was when it came in the box.
It's resistant and the writing position just works (no Steve Jobs quote intended).
If you have doubts, well, I recommend it!
official Samsung case is good looking, nice design, ****y quality and protection - mine is getting bubless by time on margins - squeezing it does remove them but wtf?! I recommend looking for something else !
I have been using the case for abouta week. I also havea screen protector on the tablet.
pros:
Very light weight
Feels good
Offers several viewing angles, when it works. See cons
Cons:
Magnets are not very strong and don't always hold it in the more up upright position.
Does not positively close, so it can expose your screen in a bag or back pack..
That said, I've been trying other solutions and none seem quite right. I have a gel case thatI bought to bulk up the tab to fit in a cheap cardboard folio usb keyboard case I have left over from another tablet. Although not very elegant, I thinkI will use it for travel as I can use the keyboard on airplanes, it provides extra protection, andI can remove three tablet with the gel case for just walking around. Just need a sturdy OTG and this set up is still less expensive than the official Samsung cover, unless you snag one of the 34.00$ deals from Amazon.
I've also tried the BT keyboard cover. Someone just needs to make one, who had actually useda tablet. Put the same clips in both sides so you don't have one that interferes with the space bar, make the shift and cap keys smaller so the keys can geta bit bigger and fall under you fingers, providea deeper trough so the tab is steadier and the back rest can be redesigned to help with that. I'm sure ZAGG will figure it out.
Finally because of the cons of the Samsung, I am thinking of ordering one of the knock offs that has the flap that closes on the back like the one for the tab10. I think I've seen it where the while thing, flap included, rolls like the iPad cover.
Finally, Samsung needs to work out the magnet thing, offer a smart cover, which should at least be possible with the phone variants.
I guess the simple answer to you question is mixed feelings about the official cover.

I ordered two knockoffs for wife and I. When it gets in from China, official covers go back to Best Buy. They offer virtually no protection and are so not worth the $50 each I paid for two.
I have a question to book cover owners: is it possible to rest your wrist on the tablet while taking notes when book cover is in the position like on the attached screen shot? Or your hand is to heavy and you and the magnet will slip of the back?
I would say that that position is ideal for typing and not the best position for resting the palm on especially if you are heavy handed as it's not really designed for taking heavy loads.

That's not good to hear - that case was next on my shopping list :/
I'm looking for a case that could handle my wrist when taking notes in a position like on the previous screen shoot, probably I will take a look at this one: puro case unfortunately it looks like no one from xda forums is using this one :/
One thing I notice with this case is that it does not cover the camera. I really like that. If you pick it up please review it!

I can confirm that yes when the case is folded the back camera is covered. In order to take a picture with back camera you would need to hold up the flap while pushing the on screen capture. Not as difficult as it sounds but you look stupid doing it. I mean if your taking pictures in public with your tablet you look like a tool already so it shouldn't bother you to much. Ill get a picture on here soon.

Great case with OUT a cover

I searched everywhere for recommendations for a case with OUT a cover. I wanted just a case that covered the back and as slim as possible and with some grip but NOT sticky. I took a chance and bought this case for my 9.7" because I'm new I can't post a link but search eBay for X-Line Shape Soft TPU Rubber Gel Case Cover For Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0"/9.7" the seller is hksanho I highly recommend it as it fits perfectly, is extremely well made (actually I'm shocked at how perfect the molding is) gives grip and is not sticky. I have a Gold Tab S2 and I bought the grey, it perfectly compliments it, further giving it the titanium look. Best of all it took only 6 days from time of order to delivery in Phoenix. I've only bought one or two things from directly from China and was extremely reticent to buy something I couldn't see or feel and not knowing if I'd ever actually get it in my lifetime LOL. Hopefully my post will help others and obviously I have no connection to the seller!
I agree
I purchased one of these cases for my Sony Z4 tablet quite a while ago; and it has been Fantastic! Super thin and fits Perfectly! I just bought one for my S2.
Thanks for finding the case. I was just trying to find out if the case was available for the Samsung - Really, I was!
Seems like the screen is the most vulnerable part. How does this kind of cover help?

After holding the tablet for a longer period of time i found the edges too hard. Based on your experiences would this cover solve this for me? Also if it would make the back of it a little less slippery that would be a bonus
yes -solves also these issues. thanxx for the tip, i ordered a black one these days. very pleased. feels like the light tablet in hands and covers perfectly my external charging pad, which allows wireless charging. very, very cool. for "expeditions" outside the house, i put the whole thing inside a book cover for protection, but at home the "minicase" is fine.

That's what tempered glass screen protectors are for, aren't they?
Also looking for the decent case with cover made by tpu or something. In germany there just a few available from which I already tried one but that one was not fitting well. Any tipps?
