[HOWTO] ROOT [KERNEL] SGH-T989 UVKID // Insecure // Root // Busybox - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

SGH-T989 UVKID // Insecure // Root // Busybox
What does all this mean?
As many of you know, we can already root our phone's but if you want to bypass all the extra steps ClockworkMod brings with it, I've got a kernel and an easier method just for you.
Features
Code:
#
# ADDITIONAL_DEFAULT_PROPERTIES
#
ro.secure=0
ro.allow.mock.location=0
ro.debuggable=1
persist.service.adb.enable=1
Code:
/sbin/*
/sbin/userscript.sh //runs the script that installs root
/sbin/su //the superuser binary we all know and love
/sbin/superuser.apk //a neat little app to manage all your root permissions
/sbin/busybox //the busybox binary we all know and love, that keep developers happy
Once you flash this you will have a fully rooted T-Mobile Galaxy S II, that also carries the benefits of an insecure kernel.
Why should you root your SGSII?
There a whole bunch of reasons a person would want to root there brand new SGSII. Any and all of the root applications in the market, some of the best apps at that, require you to root your phone.
By rooting your phone you also gain access to flash roms and themes that are popping up around the Android Development forum, by flashing ClockworkMod Recovery with Rom Manager.
What is better about this root method compared to Slayher's original method?
Since the root is maintained mostly inside of the kernel, removing root is as easy as flashing the stock kernel I posted and uninstalling the Superuser app.
Downloads
You can reference the second post on how to flash the kernel itself, but you can grab it from here now.
If you like my work..
and wish to donate you can buy me my very own T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II by using the details posted here.

How to Flash
We are going to be using Odin in this explanation to flash the stock kernel to your phone.
Downloads
First you are going to want to start by downloading all the needed files onto your computer and then place them onto your Desktop.
Samsung Kies
Odin3-v1.85.zip
SGH-T989-UVKID-Insecure-Root.tar
Process
Once you have everything downloaded and on your desktop, you are going to want to first install kies.
After this is done you should restart your computer for proper driver installation.
Next, extract Odin to a new folder on your Desktop. Leave the tar in the form it is.
Now, open up Odin by double clicking the .exe in the folder you extracted it to.
The most important step is now, you need to put your device into Download/ODIN mode so your computer will recognize it and be able to flash to it. To do this simply turn your phone off completely (or pull the battery). Then you are going to want to use the following button combination to force your device into download mode:
Hold the volume up/down and power button all at the same time.
Click to collapse
Now ODIN should have recognized your device ( it may take a while for the drivers to complete installation so don't panic the first time).
Lastly, we want to click on the PDA button and then search for the SGH-T989-UVKID-Insecure-Root.tar we download earlier and placed on the Desktop.
If all of the above has taken place you are free to hit the Start button.
Done!
If all has gone well at this point the flash should be proven successful and your phone should reboot like normal.
If so, please feel pressured to give yourself a pat on the back, that was tough!

You da man!

I'm planning on picking up my Galaxy S2 from Telus once it gets released (end of the week I've heard). Will this method work on the Telus version?

I noticed the original 784MB I had dropped to 778MB after flashing is this normal.

TY
Rooting this way is ridiculously easy, especially for those of us who don't want to muck about with a custom CWR or custom ROM just yet. Basically, all I wanted to do was to have Titanium Backup running and to delete that annoying tethering manager app!
You might want to clarify that you press both Vol+ and Vol- simultaneously then plug in the USB. The other way you mention (Vol+, Vol-, Power) puts the device into recovery not download mode.
Kudos!

No, once I am able to work with those on Telus to figure certain things out I will also develop there, do not flash anything from this forum though.

Yes, you should notice that the Superuser application is installed upon flashing and a few root binaries are copied over to /system/bin so the drop in size is due to that, and actually occurs with any root method, not just this.

If this kernel is insecure how can we expect it to perform any of its tasks confidently?

Thanks for the info but fyi the download link for Odin is broken.
Edit: looks like its the inspiringandroid page that is down. Does anyone have a mirror somewhere?

I came here to ask the same thing as above. Is there a mirror somewhere? Thanks in advance!

I am having the same problem as others. The SGH-T989-UVKID-Insecure-Root.tar link is down. Anyone have an alternate source for this file?

Brand new to this device

I guess I was at the wrong thread before for the "type" of galaxy s2 so I got lucky I asked questions before I started messing with the phone.
So I just installed the newest update yesterday so I hope it doesnt hinder my ability to root this phone.
I also have a question..does google wallet work with this phone? It has NFC but idk if its compatible with this phone?
And is S-Voice working with this device cause it seems like a great feature when I read about the GSIII
Anything specific I need to know about this phone....im coming from the mytouch 4g slide and this phone is leaps and bounds better than it....im not a noob when it comes to flashing and pretty familiar with ADB but not familiar with ODIN. Other phones I've owned and rooted: sensation 4G, G2, Galaxy S 4G, mytouch 4G and thats all I can remember now.
Sorry for the noobish questions....but I'll thank who ever helps in advance....I really appreciate it

Google Wallet currently does not work on the GSll. As for S-Voice, I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667046.
To root your phone I will put this as simply as possible:
1) Get USB drivers for our phone (T989) (You can get these from installing Kies)
2) Get a recovery. (Either CWM Hard or Touch)
3) Put phone in download mode (Phone off. Hold both volume buttons. Insert USB that is in computer.)
4) Run ODIN as administrator.
5) You should see a yellow bar filled on Odin below the first square on the far left of the program signifying your device is connected.
6)Under PDA find your custom recovery and click open.
7) Press start.
8) Enjoy custom recovery
---- Now flash super user the same way or just download a rom with s.u access (any rom will have this).
Hope I helped.
This is the EASIEST phone to root.
EDIT:
No updating to UVDLE doesn't hinder your ability to root. But if you put on a custom ROM there was no point in updating anyways.
Google wallet will be functional once official ICS drops.

Not to be intrusive and i know this is not my threat, but on step 2 which i see everywhere, what is the different between CWM hard and Touch? that is the only thing confusing me.
And on step 9...., you say use any rom, you mean like aokp or darksider, which they will come with superuser, once flashed, there is my phone and a better software? that seems to be too easy. I noticed some roms do not come with kernels, should i stay away from them? and use only those that have their own kernels?

The video Uber pointed to has all the links to the files you need. To summarize you will have Odin on your computer with Samsung drivers installed. You will also have the clockworkmod tar on the computer and download the ROM to your phone's sd card.
1. You will turn off your phone, hold the 1 key on the keyboard then add pressing and holding the power button until the yellow triangle saying download mode pops up.
2. With Odin up on your computer and auto reboot box unchecked, connect the usb cable (recommend a Blackberry cable). It should show a comxx in the box. Put the clockworkmod tar in the PDA box of odin by browsing to the file on your computer from odin.
3. Hit start. It go pretty fast and tell you when it is complete and passed.
4.Now with the yellow triangle still on your phone, disconnect the cable. Pop the battery out and in. Press and hold in this order, volume down, camera and power buttons making sure the power is the last you add. Hold those for about 5 full seconds. Clockworkmod 5 should come up.
5. Choose install file from sd card by scrolling with the volume down button and selecting with the camera button. Go to the place on your sd card that the FC09 ROM downloaded to, perhaps a directory called download. Choose the file and flash it.
6. Hit reboot system and you should have a rooted deodexed stock ROM on your phone. You are ready to do any rooted stuff and even flash themes on this ROM.

Why don't you keep using qbking77's videos? He has how to videos for a bunch of rom's, plus he reviews rom's too.
Give some of the reviews a viewing, see if you like what is in the rom, and then follow his directions.
What others have said is correct, you can screw up your phone if you're not careful, but his directions are very good and very complete. If you do exactly as he says, you should not have issues.
If you do have issues, others have written instructions on what to do to recover from that too.
Have fun. Take your time. You'll learn as you experiment.
Since you already got the hang of odin it is almost impossible to brick this phone...sponge it yeah but tough to brick. Have fun.

Either pay for the tethering plan.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Or follow the rooting instructions found within these forums or youtube qbking77 epic videos. And download a 3rd party tethering app or flash a custom rom that has tethering baked in.
.
.
.
But be advised the root method violates TOS agreement and if sprint finds out and decides to they can terminate your service no questions asked. I've only heard of it happening if someone uses a extremely large amount of data while tethering. But there is a first for everything.

Hey Guys,
Here's my situation. my power button doesn't work and to my understanding, that's part of the motherboard so I'm kind of fked on that end (water damage so sprint won't replace it).
My phone's stock right now, but I have rooted in the past with QBKING77's method (mentioned above by kennyglass and QBKING77's youtube how-to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9eaCtiS0Bo&feature=youtube_gdata_player).
I'm trying to root the phone so that I can install CM9 on it (used beta 2 in the past). I'm able to adb into the phone and get it into download mode. I'm scared that if I flashed the CWM Tar file, there won't be anything to get into CWM with since I can't do the button combination anymore.
Any suggestions? Also any recommendations on the power button problem would be much appreciated as well (I currently slide to open it and bought a cheapo non-data charger and it boots it up).
Thanks guys for all your help

Get another Epic off of Ebay.
It works fine now. I just slide to get it on and installed a power off app so that's a workaround for now. Upgrade's coming up soon so just going to stick this out for now.
I'm not familiar with ODIN enough but I would assume there's a way to just flash the ROM and CWM at once to obtain root and CWM together....

Sorry, forgot to mention that it doesn't work
The cable just powers the device on without performing the actions of the power button so button combinations don't work
I know I can boot to recovery with a rooted rom, but I need to be able to install that first. And I need my phone to be on with a working ROM in order to ADB into it for any ADB commands.
Can you get into download mode with the cable and holding the "1" key? If so there are odinable prerooted ROMs.

I can't get into download mode with the cable and holding the "1" key, BUT
I can get into download mode by turning on debugging and adb into it with "adb reboot download"
What would the steps be then? Would I obtain a odinable pre-rooted rom (any suggestions?), Odin, re-boot, installed cwm recovery through the app, reboot, boot into cwm, and then wipe + flash cm9?

When you say app, do you mean ROM Manager? You will have to see if that EC05 prerooted will accept ROM Manager. If that is what you meant, then yes. Just like that.

Ok a few things just to make sure:
I'm on FC09 Stock right now, so by flashing this ROM, I would then be able to install clockworkmod recovery through ROM Manager (giving me the latest clockwork mod recovery I believe) and then get to clockworkmod recovery through ROM Manager.
Eventually I would like to end up on CM9 which is MTD. Could I just flash a CM9 ROM over the EC05 Rooted ROM?
Would I still be on FC09 and/or would it be better to flash another FC09 Rooted ROM (i'm referring to the one in QBKING77's youtube link) to upgrade to FC09 and then flash the CM9 ROM.
In ODIN, I would place the EC05 file in the "PDA" location in Odin?
Would I check re-partition and autoboot? I'm assuming I don't check f. reset time.
Thanks for all your help
If you Odin the tar I posted you will be back on EC05 modem. You can always flash a newer modem with Odin. If ROM manager does work on that odined ROM then you can go right to cm9 after clockworkmod 5.

A noob's guide to rooting and flashing

Looking into rooting? Maybe try this foreign ROM thing? (Not talking about ethnicities here) Here is the place to be.
First of all, make sure you have a T-Mobile Galaxy S3. (Aka t999 or d2tmo)
If you follow instructions here for any other device, even for galaxy s3's of another carrier you are extremely likely to regret it and end up having to unbrick your device because you installed an incompatible file.
You can take your battery out to make sure it says t999 under if you are not absolutely sure.
Rooting is a similar idea to jail breaking an iPhone. It removes what restrictions there are with android devices. Yes, it is perfectly legal.
Which leads me to my disclaimer:
I take no credit for what's posted here.
The only work here that's mine is the organization. Please donate to the rightful people who spent quality time developing.
Also I am not responsible for any damage done to your device.
It is vital that you follow instructions in every exact detail.
Firstly, rooting.
1. Install drivers for your device onto your PC. To do this, you can install Samsung Kies or there are downloads that will install the drivers solely(recommended link for drivers http://d-h.st/zya)(thanks DocHoliday77). If you get to the point where you can exchange files to phone from the computer and vice-versa then you're set for drivers.
2. Do a backup (using Kies or a program of your choice)
3.Uninstall Kies. Kies doesn't play nicely with the program used to root called Odin. So uninstall Kies so Odin can work unhindered. Your drivers should stay. But make sure you can still copy files between your phone and computer before proceeding.
4.Follow these instructions put together by OfficialPhoneRebel(aka EverythingApplePro):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKwhAVj5Feg Outdated. try CF-Auto-Root
Yes, I used this method and it did work for me.
5.After you are rooted, the first thing you wanna do is either install ROM manager (on play store). Open ROM manager. (Yes, give it superuser rights) and install the latest clockworkmod recovery, or use GooManager to get TWRP recovery, both work, but sometimes one is suggested for the installation of a specific ROM.
6.Now install busybox(also in play store)
7.You're all done!
If you've made it this far, kudos. Now you're gonna wanna get the app called titanium backup and do a full backup of your phone. Also boot into recovery (home+volume up then press power until it vibrates all while holding home+volume up buttons) do a backup through these menus. If your feeling like an over achiever and wanna be super safe then go ahead and back up to both your internal sdcard and your external sdcard. Also it now would be wise to back up your IMEI nv (basically your phone's identity), instructions for that can be found here (thanks to daxecutioner24)
Now you have reached a possible stopping point. Stop here and enjoy root privileges. Continue to read how to install a custom ROM.
Installing a custom ROM(operating system):
GooManager (on play store) is a pretty good directory for ROMs. And is a great place to download them and gapps. Now since not every ROM installs this way it is important to check the main page associated with that page to see if any special instructions are required.
But this is what you generally do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946701
Roms:
Gapps can be found either on the ROM's page or through goo manager make sure the firmware versions match up (like android 4.1 and 4.1 jelly bean gapps)
For a pure android ROM I would suggest CyanogenMod 10.1 (the one I am currently on)
For an inverted stock ROM stuffed with fun features I would suggest DaRTHSTALKER S3
For a full list of roms and descriptions or if your just addicted to flashing, then here's the stockpile of almost every rom made for the galaxy s3 t999
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2088179
Backups are your friend. Especially through recovery mode. They have saved my butt several times when flashing a ROM went wrong.
And yes it is possible to sim unlock (make it so you can use it on any GSM network(such as at&t or US cellular)) your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037390
Problem happened and you can no longer boot correctly? This is actually very common.
If you can boot into recovery:
Boot into recovery (Hold home button and volume up then press power till it vibrates all while holding volume up and home)
Restore backup (easiest method)
If that falls through then install a rom by following the instructions mentioned earlier.
If you can't boot into recovery or if those methods didn't work:
You must odin to stock. Follow the instructions here under using odin. Odin and Driver files are at the top of the post. Firmware files (what you put in PDA) are located here
If this didn't work, you may be out of luck, try again and if you are still stuck browse the forums and possible post something under Q and A if worst comes to worse, make sure to describe the entire situation including error messages you may have received so the problem can be pinpointed.
And finally, everyone be nice seeing as I am welcoming very new people to this thread.
Also if any suggestions to improve this post let me know.

Good job
I like this post, would save those useless threads how do I root even though it's sticky all over. Also it would be really helpful if you include how to back up your IMEI nv maybe link the thread before they start flashing roms. This is probably one of the most important thing as when you start flashing stuff the IMEI might get lost and without that there is no phone. Everything else looks good.

Thank you!! I implemented that into my instructions. The goal of this thread is to be the thread that everyone can direct newbies here and not have a thousand different threads on the same thing. Also this way people can get their answers faster seeing as their questions will be in the same known place not in some obscure oddly-titled thread in the wrong section. Thanks!

will this work on my T-Mobile Galaxy S3 4.1.2?

Will this work on a 4.1.2 version and yes I do have the galaxy s3 t-999 T-Mobile please respond back asap thank you

It should work fine.
I suggest either CF AutoRoot or root66 (see firmware link in my sig) as the best ways too root. Imo.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Yes this works for that all you needed to do is click on the CF-Auto-Root method during the process and that would've been explained to you. I have used CF-Auto-Root atleast twice on two different galaxy s3's running jellybean 4.1.2 and it worked more than flawlessly

Just fyi, though, CF Autoroot aparently does not work fot the new T999L.

What about kernels? What exactly are they and how should you flash them (do you even need to)?
Can you still use Galaxy S3 motion activated features after flashing a custom ROM?

kernel is when hardware need something like you bluetooth or need to adjust screen brightness it send a request to kernel bla bla bla.
you can only flash a kernel that is compatible to your rom by rebooting to recovery

The way I understand it is the kernel is the bridge between your input and the devices output. Like the bridge between software and hardware... Sorta.. Ya you don't need to flash one sometimes custom kernels can add features and maybe improve GPS/battery life but I don't use custom kernels much. But that's just me some people are in to that stuff.
And yeah it just depends on the specific ROM for the specific features. I don't know if this is still a think its been a while since I've had some Samsung action but check our hyperdrive they had some good stuff going on when I used em.
Best bet is Google. Everything you could ever want to know about kernels and more! If you want to know about custom ones, read the OP's of the many available ones.

[Q] Rooting for a complete noob... SGH-T999

Hi, I am a complete noob at this. I am trying to root my GS3 SGH-T999 because i want to be able to run a rom (if thats the correct term) that would give me some of the GS4 type features. I rooted it using a you tube video, i would post the link but xda does not allow me to, but the title of the video is: "How to Root the Sprint / AT&T / T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III - Latest" and accomplished what appears to be a successful root of my phone. But I've since downloaded several roms and have not been able to get any of them to work. If anybody could refer me to a video or link or just a better way to accomplish my goal i would be very grateful. I'm completely lost and have no idea what to do, any type of help would be appreciated, I'm sure there's someone out there in my shoes as well... thanks

This will root your stock Samsung T999 Galaxy S3 phone. - It works every time.
There are many other ways to root but for a noob this will root your phone the first
time around instead of trying a lot of other ways which may or may not work for you.
Easy and sure way to root: here is the step by step guide:
After you have followed these instructions your phone will be in the same condition
as it was the day you have purchased it except with the benefit of being rooted.
Download the stock-rooted T999 firmware: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426451
After downloading it make a folder on your computer's desktop and unzip the
file using Winzip or 7zip so the .TAR file is in the new folder you just made.
Here is a link for ODIN which is required for flashing the stock rooted firmware (a windows app) http://d-h.st/Q14
Download and extract Odin into the same folder you made containing the TAR file.
Download the Odin Flash firmware for T999 Tmobile then copy it to the same folder as Odin
Run Odin by double clicking the Odin.exe within the same folder as the TAR file you extracted
Turn off your phone and boot into DOWNLOAD MODE (Volume Down + Home + Power Hold until phone powers up, then release and press Volume Up to enter Download Mode)
Once in Download Mode, connect the USB/Charger cable to the phone and plug into the USB port on your computer.
You should now see a COM** port listed toward the top-left of Odin (under ID:COM)
Click on the PDA button in the middle-right area of Odin.
Browse to and select the Firmware you downloaded (TAR file)
Make sure Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time are the only options checked and that PDA is the only other thing checked.
TRIPLE CHECK your settings and that you have selected the correct firmware for your model phone and are using the correct options.
If you are using a laptop, make absolutely sure you are plugged in, or if on battery, that it is charged enough and will not go into sleep mode during flash.
Click Start to begin the flash. This will take a while, so be patient!
Once complete, in the top-left box in Odin, it will say PASS and the phone should have automatically rebooted.
You may unplug the phone and close Odin if you wish.
Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the system to boot the first time and then build its cache!
(It may seem to hang during boot, this is normal and you must be patient!!!)
Good Luck!
there's galaxy s4 apps that have been ported to the galaxy s3. however, they have bugs.
galaxy s4 apps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2206668
the easy way to root the t-mobile galaxy s3 is root66.
more information, please read: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687
also, make sure the rom you are flashing is made for the T-MOBILE Galaxy s3 (T999). Do NOT flash a International Galaxy s3 rom (i9300). flashing an international rom will brick your device.

Measure twice cut once
You have rooted your phone with a stock root wich means you now have root access (if successful) . When you say you tried to flash a rom and it didn t work can you give details for everyone the process and symptoms ie in clockworks recovery, bootloop, stuck on logo etc. did you run root checker?
Heres the link from the video http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743780
What exactly are you asking? How to root? Cause from what I'm picking up in your post is that you already rooted but can't flash ROM's.
Do you have an app called SuperSu? Can you use root apps like Titanium Backup or ROM Manager?
If so, boot into recovery. (Hold Volume up, Home, and Power. When you feel the buzz let go of power and keep holding volume up and home)
If you don't have SuperSu then you're not rooted. You can follow the instructions above or go to Galaxys3root.com
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Sounds like you need to update your recovery. Go to the play store and download rom manager, open it and update the recovery. Now you shouldn't have any problems flashing roms.

So I have superuser, and I checked that I was rooted with the root checker app, and it was suggested to me that I update clockwork mod because I had an older version, I haven't tried to flash a rom yet though, are there any good stable roms I should try?

Ok, like BeastMode suggested, download ROM Manager, update clockworkmod and you should be set.
Before flashing a rom. Backup your apps with Titanium Backup. Then boot into recovery and make a backup. This is highly important cause incase something goes wrong, you can just restore to where you are now.
Titanium saves your apps and data, backup through recovery makes a copy of your phone as it is now.
If you want a touchwiz based ROM, I suggest Wicked v9.1 it's what I use daily. I love it and highly recommend it to anyone.
If you decide to go to a 4.2.2 rom, that's ok but you might face some issues going from 4.2.2 AOSP back to a 4.1.1 ROM. Gps is likely to be broken when going back but there's an easy fix for it so no worries.
I had to Odin back to stock. Going from 4.2.2 to 4.1.1 was giving me random reboots and force closes. Just a warning.

How do I get/use titanium backup? And could you post a link for wicked v9.1? Thanks.
Playstore. Search titanium Backup, once there backup all apps and data. Go to preferences if you want to save on your external sd card.
Go to android development section of the time mobile galaxy S iii and wicked thread should be on the first page.
Follow instructions when installing. But do your backups first before flashing anything.
