notification light - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to activate the notification light on this phone since the sprint version has one? I am coming from a bb and htc phone.

I don't think our hardware has it in there. If it did and there was a way to activate it though I would be amazed/overjoyed

We dont have a notification light

I wonder why samsung would not put it for Tmobile? this is a very valuable feature to have on a phone. This forces you to constantly turn on your phone to see if you missed or received any communication or if your battery is fully charged when plugged in the outlet. I guess sprint cares more about their customers to have asked samsung to add this feature on theirs. This is one of the reasons i am little hesitant to walk away from my blackberry simply because of this feature. Otherwise, this is a very cool phone to have. I hope the SGS3 will have it.

I knew this buying this phone ... I'm hoping for a soft-button LED mod (like this app for LG phones).

I, for one, say good riddance to those pesky leds! It's the same reason I hate flashing lights on bluetooth devices. First, you have to remember which lights and which sequences mean what, and then if you're in a dark theater or restaurant, it looks like you're a Christmas tree. Plus, it is very annoying and distracting to have that light blink in my peripheral vision while I'm using the phone.
To me, it's not all that hard to press power to check my notifications. But that's only my opinion.

Exactly what I was thinking. The G2X has a soft mod that enabled led flashing. I was hoping there would be something like that for the SGS2.
Bounty? lol

How about one that turns the flash LED on and off.... Now that would get your attention.

You guys are talking about BLN- back light notification.
I do believe that this will be forthcoming once our development section goes into full swing. Why do I say this? We already have control of our soft keys - i.e. capacitive touch buttons in the "settings" menu.
On the Vibrant, BLN was only possible if we used an international Galaxy i9000 Kernel, which caused other battery-drain issues. On the S2, i believe it is a native function of our phone.
Just hang in there. BLN will be coming. In the meantime, be patient

very interesting.

awesome!! i can't wait for your team to make it available. I will patiently check on this "life changing" development. This will make my transition from blackberry to samsung android smooth and worth it.
Thanks A4moda

coming from a blackberry.. the lact of a notification light is .. soothing..
that thing just makes you addicted to you phone. You see the light flash and it's like AWWWW gotta reply NAO!!!11one

i'm looking forward to the BLN kernel
i've been using it on the Nexus S and it's great!

Wish I had that virtue.

One of the thing I missed most about the G2X was the ability to light up the keys for notifications. I hope it comes to the Galaxy S2, it would make my phone complete!

Returning The Epic "4G" Touch

Im sure you guys care less but anywho.
Screen has a greenish ugly looking tint on the left side of the screen going from top to bottom
You can see it in white pages or even this forum background as the page loads.
The so called 4G plain sucks outdoors and specially indoors, As soon as i step inside the house it looses the 4g, and also inside ANY place i walk in!
So i try using 3g, omg, i should say EDGE! LOL. SUPER slow.
Also, samsung still has this real dumb feature or hardware issue, the screen DIMS real low once the phone gets warm/hot. I hate that, ive used my iphone 4 and many others and NEVER EVER had to deal with this. It is so annoying.
Other than that and even the fact that the samsung hub wont let me play the movies i PAID for i loved the phone. So sad this is because i have no idea what to get next. Even if samsung releases a blow my mind phone again i will never buy one till they fix that retarded screen dim when phone gets warm or hot. Thats just crazy that i have to use it outside with such a faded screen!
Your complaints seen trivial and more than likely can be remedied by replacing the phone, other than that cool story bro

Everything you said is a dud unit + network related. The one thing that makes sense is the dimmer when it gets hot, but that's just a preference. I returned my EVO 3D because it skipped music tracks unless I downloaded an app (which had to be ran in the background) to prevent it. It's speakers were also so quiet that I'd sleep through my alarm. Then, to top it off, my text messages were displaying the wrong time (m texts would display the correct time, but incoming texts would be listed 2 hours before mine, so mine always appeared at the bottom and it was annoying!)....then my camera app became useless with green lines through it.
Anyways, done with going off-topic...I'd suggest getting a replacement or switching networks.

Slow down amigo, I am sure that up coming roms will take care of most if not all of those
Issues. That's the beauty of andriod you can pretty much customize anything. The size of this screen is awesome why go back to a 3.5". I don't see the greenish tint on my screen , Maybe you got a defective phone. Again I agree, some things are annoying but the devs can find solutions to most of the issues.
Return it and wait for your iphone 5. Ur a fanboy, I can see it in the way you talk. You had no business having a real phone like this to begin with. The beginners section is over at ApplefanboyIvegottheGBs.com.
Sounds like you got a lemon. There should be no green tint on the screen; S-AMOLED+ is amazing with colors and contrast.
Regarding network speed, 4G support is obviously dependent on whether or not there's 4G coverage in your area. I really hope you knew this before you bought the phone.

Oh shutie! Fan boy of anything im not. I mentioned the iphone 4 because its the last phone i had before i got this one. Ive had the droids, thunderbolt, galaxy phones from tmobile, samsung infuse, nexus one, and others and the iphone 4 for a week. So you got anything else to say thats worthless?
Also, you guys mean that when ur outside in the car and you use your phone for a while the screen doe NOT dim down? The setting on my phone was all the way UP and the screen was super dim. As soon as it cooled off like 1 minute or so it went suoer bright. Used it again to stream music and the screen went down low again. I hope its just a lemon.
Ur screen has a technical problem. It's a very complex piece of technology. Our experiences don't show green tint or dimming problems. The opposite is true. It's vibrant, bright and the color reproduction is like nothing we've ever seen. I would exchange that phone as soon as possible.
Sounds more like a lemon then the majority. Get what works for you, obviously in this thread certain response is expected especially with an informed user base for the most part

Silent/Vib by Long Press on Vol Down

Hey everyone .. I was just thinking back to my Blackberry days (ew) and how much I liked being able to hold down the Volume Down button to initiate Silent/Vib mode. Is there any way to do this? Ideally I would like to be able to do that from the lockscreen too. Any ideas? I only bring it up because I think other people would like this feature too.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Juggernaut ROM has a lockscreen where you can slide the other side for vibration. Also the notification toggles has this also. It really isn't needed outside of that.

Well I'm using the new ICS style lockscreen so it doesn't have the sliders. Maybe its not something people would like *shrug*

Guess I'm just in a testy mood today but why do people say things "aren't needed"? Android phones aren't "needed", but we want them, and we want them to function in a certain way, that's why we're on XDA after all right? Kudos for giving the alternative methods but I, like the OP, would much rather be able to use the physical buttons (while in the lock screen especially so I could silence the phone without even looking at it) to turn the phone to vibrate. That way, I can use my lock screen and toggle space that WOULD'VE been taken up by volume controls, to launch other things.

It really isn't needed if you think about it. There are 3 current methods in which you can silence your phone, I think we should focus our want into something much more productive and innovative since if we continue down this path, it's going to contribute to a cycle of redundancy.
I agree that it's the "wants" that makes this place great, but it's not like we're crippled to have only one way to silence our phones after all. One man's inconvenience is another one's convenience. I don't want certain features since it may break other features that I really liked which may result in some sort of compromise. We have different wants and objectives with our own phones, which is great, but don't try to confuse what you're trying to get out of your phone with what I am trying to get out with mine.

There's absolutely no reason my want has to break any other features or mean any sort of compromise. Also you didn't even address the user case I presented in which vol down to vibrate is still the quickest, and most discreet method. Nobody's confusing what we want out of our respective phones (what does that even mean?). And no, we're not crippled by not having that feature, but nobody said we were. But my original point stands, it's counter productive and a bit condescending to tell someone else what they should or shouldn't want. If you have alternatives to offer, awesome but why bother saying "you shouldn't want this".
As for the actual topic, it definitely seems like this is less prevalent, on my G1 and MyTouch3G I used a bunch of ROMs with it baked in.

I think the user would have a faster time swiping across their lockscreen to silence their phones, since the method you mentioned would require one or two hands, with one button press to bring up the lockscreen, the other to button press to hold down the vol toggles. I still think my proposed method is much more efficient in terms of bringing up the lockscreen to silence.
This is all completely my opinion, and If I came out condescending, that was NOT my intention. In a way, I think we're past arguing about adding in features to arguing more on wants and needs which I'm not against at all. I'm more or less against adding in extra features that in a way isn't really revolutionary or anything new for this phone. I honestly think it's counter productive to ask developers for extra small features that already has it in a different way, instead of opting for bigger features, and in this case with Juggernaut 5.0, ICS lockscreen with music widget, which is huge. And again, this comes back to the perspective we have for our phones, which most want the bigger piece of the pie (ICS lockscreen, toggle rearrangement, etc) while others may want more smaller features added in for their specific niche.
Also, would it have been better if I put "I honestly think..." in the last sentence of my first post? I believe that the way the first post I posted did sound a bit presumptuous and snobby, which you were right to point out. Again, that was not my intention.
I don't want to derail this thread with any of our differences so PM if you any further qualms. And all things considered, I think we just violently agree for the most part and disagree on why specific features should be implemented.

It's there so that if you are doing something else on the phone like checking e-mail or browsing you'll know you're still on a call. When you swipe down there's also quick controls that allow you to manage the call without opening the dialer. Personally, I think it's pretty slick and makes it easy to do other things while you're in-call.

Yes, I have this 'problem'. If HTC ever 'fix' it I'll be quite annoyed because it's very useful.
This is also a feature in my Motorola Atrix 2....which I plan on upgrading in July to the HOX...if I can wait that long
It's just a visual reminder that you're on a call.....let me give you a hypothetical
What if you're on hold and there's no hold music and you decide to kill time by getting on the net or whatever else you want to do on your phone...kind of easy to forget you're holding on the line right? But if you don't like it, no worries, but it's not a defect or malfunction is all i'm saying.

Here is the solution to your green bar flashing "problem". It will also work for the red bar on hold 'problem' too.
Either, take the SIM card out and use it like that (and then maybe you can say your phone is SIM Free now) or put the phone into Airplane mode. Problem solved.

you could use an NFC sticker
Theres an app called shush that lets you program the phone so it will automatically go silent at certain times of the day that you specify.
I use setting profiles, it lets me set profiles then conditions and actions for each profuile.
It knows when im at any of my offices, at home, asleep, in a meeting (calendar item) by gps, cells, time, lots of other criteria.
Its a little sketchy to program at first, but I have moved my settings to 4 phones now and its really slick. I dont have to remember to flip a switch even.
If you pull down the notification bar there is a tab for silent /vibrate/ normal
Obviously before u holster it

Thanks guys. These options are cool, but a hard sell over the convenience of a physical master sound button. Let me know if you guys can think of anything else. Custom rom holding down the power button or something of the like?

Although I agree 1000%, I can certainly understand of an iphone user who is reluctant to switch again when they have finally got one that "just works"
An engineer friend of mine struggled thru all the pain of a slow/laggy POS android phone with all the asinine work arounds like juice defender/custom kernels etc just to eke out a little more battery life.
Since he is not into customizing the phone AT ALL, you couldn't drag him kicking and screaming back to ANY Android phone at this point..........
Nah, I'm just kidding around. I had a 3GS before my Inspire. It was OK, but that was about it. I don't miss it one bit, but I don't begrudge anyone for wanting simplicity.
No button to switch on the side like the iPhone. But I could also list so many things that the iPhone can't do or lacks compared to the Galaxy S3 so I don't mind that at all.
I have the iPhone 4S too and still enjoy my LTE GS3 over it.
I'm sorry but I think this thread is pointless. He either wants a better all around phone or he wants to stay with his old outdated pos phone. There is no physical button able to mute the phone with the screen off. If that is the dealbreaker he definitely has some issues he needs to work out with himself

I would disagree the OP is asking is there any solution for a specific criteria he has. The reasons behind it maybe questionable but he is still asking does the phone have some functionality he may not know about, which is fine. The whole point of this community is to share and exchange ideas, tips, tricks and educate. There is nothing wrong with someone asking a question about the phone at all many have found features out about their phones that they had no idea it had. What I am struggling with is what your post has at all to offer other than your personal opinion about another phone manufacturer and a potential insult to the OP about his friend. Maybe in the future rather than post something of no value you don't post or post something that has value to others.

Coming from a Treo, a while back, I agree about the usefulness of the ringer switch. It is a nice simple, elegant solution and one of the things I miss about the Treo. The best solution I have found is one of the profile managers like someone mentioned. You can set it to silence the phone whenever a calendar appointment has a word you choose like "meet" or "call" or "lunch".

Thanks guys. These options are cool, but a hard sell over the convenience of a physical master sound button. Let me know if you guys can think of anything else. Custom rom holding down the power button or something of the like?

Use an nfc tag that when placed in the holster its set up to shut the ringer off.

How on earth would they not implement that feature.....!
There they are, glowing quiet bright and noticeable - configurable aswell.
But not good enough to have them flash as a reminder.
Sometimes it really boggles my mind what developers in big companies (or the marketing stategists, who ever decided...) think.
It is beyond me why the soft keys do not work as a reminder in a device that retails at a MSRP of €599,- in europe, thus clearly tarketing the business user segment...

Seriously... I just picked mine up on Sunday, and I love the notification LED on my gf's S3, (I've been all-HTC prior to this.) So far, it's the only major problem I have with the device. And... it's really not that major.
Has anyone found an app that will serve as notification light?
