[Q] People Hub - Live Tile Pictures - Windows Phone 7 General

Is there any way to control what pictures are used on the people hubs live tile? For some reason this thing alway grabs the same few people out of Linkedin that I haven't talked to in years. I have no interest in seeing these people's mugs every time I turn on the phone.
Anyone know how to control this other than de-friending the people in question?
Thanks

Don't use Linked In, but on my Focus with Mango, I select a picture as a favorite. Only pictures I select as Favorites show up in the Live Tile. I have about 200 photos on my phone. Currently I have 10 of those as Favorites. Not one picture outside of the Favorites has shown up since Mango upgrade.

Is that for the photo's hub or people hub? I know I can do that for the pictures hub but the people hub tile shows pics of your contacts. It's not just linked in BTW, it will grab a few Facebook friends. Again it seems like I get the same ones over and over and usually its people I don't really want to see every time I look at my phone

maybe you should get more better looking friends...
but seriously, it seems to be random, and afaik there is no way to select who it shows.

Well can't argue with that. No doubt they're not all super models
I agree that it seems randomish. But it's really not for me. It still seems to pull the same few over and over again.
Oh well I guess its just the way it is.

Hi, I have a HTC Titan, and before that I had a Diamond. When I receive a call from any contats only apperars the telephone number. In my Diamond appears the photo ou contact name. How can I fix it?

It'd be real cool if it did photo uploads. T-Mobile isn't supported by Facebook.
A Panel for this would be cool too
Ehh why are all these sites always asking for your phone number. That's like a social security card # in my book. It angers me. I guess I'm willing to a regular process of signing in. It's not like we don't get a notification from email that we have a new facebook messege.
Plus wouldn't it just be another startup main-memory addition.

We need more feature rich sms app, stock sms app horrid

Is anyone else disatisified with the sms app on our wp7? There's no contact photo of who you're talking too, the conversation does indicate who said what, such as my name isnt on one side and the other persons isn't either, just the contact name in big ol huge font at the top. I wish a developer would create a more feature rich sms app that shows contact photo facebook and twitter status updates and more copy and paste access such as copy and pasting entire strings of conversation that include the date and time. and last but not least
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE improve the mms application, it is so lacking does not play video nor gifs and whenever a funny ha ha mms with music is recieved it plays the music file first then shows you the image, its just awful
The sms client is bad and halfway done (no video support). we know that already... Yes they need to fix this issue... its a pita yo communicate with no decent I'm and half an mms client.
But you could have searched and bumped one of the other ten threads.

I don't think there's anything inherently bad about the SMS app. I know who said what because there are only two people in the conversation, and I know what i've said Plus my texts are on the right and the others are on the left. Easy.
What you are listing aren't features, those are design considerations which don't suit your tastes. They suit mine. It's impossible to appease everyone.
BUT, this all boils down to the lack of APIs. If we had these APIs, someone would make an SMS client that you do like. If Microsoft keep going this way, they are going to realise that people won't sit around and wait forever for Microsoft to update. It is much easier to let the community do the work!
Now the MMS, from what I have read that does suck. I wouldn't know because I have an unbranded device and therefore am not allowed to enter my MMS settings...apparently.
i guess an improvement that can be made to the sms client would be to differentiate the sender and receiver by colours, as well as the left/right orientation.
Let me say this, I don't want to hurt or upset anyone's feelings on here, I'm pro Microsoft love all things from Redmond, I am a wp7 cheerleader!
I feel bad that I didn't look to see if any other threads had been started regarding the sams subject. My apologies.
I thank everyone for their opinions and input, it gives me a better understanding of why things are the way they are if that makes any sense.
With all the additional features coming to the mango update, I only hope that SMS client gets in on the juicy goodness

just like he said
To the OP: ah, I see you've never used windows mobile. You don't know what a horrid anything is.
ROARRRR I want my phone to fly a plane and do somersaults!!!!
The Windows Mobile SMS client was threaded and similar to the Blackberry SMS client, which is not a bad thing. It also supports full SMS Backup and Restore via Microsoft MyPhone (including MMS, IIRC). It was decent on a well-spec'd QWERTY device or a decently modded capacitive touchscreen device with the right OEM modifications. It is more than usable on the HD2, but its hardware support does stifle the Snapdragon SoC and Camera (Which is capable of HD Recording, IIRC).
The only thing I feel bad about with so many other Windows Mobile device users is that they had such crappy devices (WM minimum specs were so low, that you ended up with OEMs putting up ridiculously bad devices devoid of RAM/Storage and processing post). That never helped it...
@ OP if you don't know who's saying what in an SMS conversation then I dunno what to say. The chat bubbles are descriptive enough to let you know where stuff is coming from quite obviously, and that bubble type is used in almost every type of smartphone.
MS can make any improvement they want. I am happy with what i am having right now... Since i don't text much and the only thing i need is something that i could send and receive messege. I bought the whole new phone not for texting only.
Correct, but a dumb phone is a whole phone and they're cheaper to buy and service than a smartphone...
The issue for some users is that there aren't many good IM apps (if any) on the platform at the moment so you're really relient on SMS and email for textual communications (SMS is superior to email due to the fact that it's pushed irregardless of what type of phone the person has - feature phone IM clients often use encoded MMS). So, it makes issues with that particular application a bit more apparent.
Not that I think they are issues. I think it's kind of hard to not know who's saying what in the SMS client because the chat bubbles are clearly pointing in the correct directions. However, the lack of Voice/Video MMS does leave a functional black hole that even SMS clients on the platform do not fill.
The SMS client has issues, but those issues have nothing to do with the chat bubbles.
P.S. Tons of people who buy smartphones actually use the data connection more than they use it as a phone.

Andoid vet w/ a n00b question

I've always had this problem on every ROM i've ever used. the thing was i never really cared enough to ask anyone what the issue was lol. so maybe someone can help me out here.
i typically use sense roms and i have photos assigned to a lot of my contacts. these arent facebook or twitter pics sync'ed with the contact, just default photos i saved for them. i also use SMS Popup. some pics dont show up in the messaging app. some pics dont show up on the popup notification. anyone know the reason for this?
PS. the photos DO show up when i go to my list of contacts though.

Gonna take a real quick shot in the dark, so take it with a grain of salt. Any photos that show up in all places correctly, check their dimensions, file type, and size. My guess, and I heavily emphasize guess here, is that each place you're looking for these (the app, built in contact list, etc) has its certain requirements for pic size, dimensions and file type. If you examine the ones that are working in all places correctly, it might give some headway into figuring out what is wrong with the other ones. If none are working in all places, try taking one of the contact pics, go into windows paint, crop it to the size you would want to see, do a "save as..." and choose .jpg. Windows paint will strip out any additional layers and such that are weighing on the image and pretty much break it down to its most simple form and reduce the size. Then load up that modified pic and see if it works everywhere, if it does, rinse and repeat. If it doesn't work, well, it was worth a shot.

Oh, and seeing as I don't have a WP7 device (yet), what are the current Facebook frustrations so I know where to attack?
The one issue with the current Microsoft supplied Facebook app is that when you click on a youtube video is sends you to the regular youtube page and not the mobile version...so without flash it won't work. The only other thing would be a live tile that shows number of new notifications.

MS could of made it open an installed Youtube App as they have native code access. Not sure there are API's for this to a Marketplace Developer. Just a thought anyway, I could be wrong.
As for the Live tile, I would love to see a double wide live tile with more than just a number of notifications. I'd love to see more app actually have a true live tile with some of the notification text in the tile. Is this possible with the new Mango API's for a Marketplace Developer though?

I believe double-wide live tiles are still not available to 3rd parties, but certainly much more informational live tiles are available with the use of the back and front of the tile now.

Getting back to this app, while its nice to see someone trying to get a better Facebook app up and running, I hope that it doesn't end up looking like the Android or iOS Facebook app (as pictured in the screenshot).
Metro is a very capable design ethic, and the general design of Windows Phone 7 and it's apps lend themselves very well to presenting information in both an organized and beautiful fashion. Please make sure to take advantage of that. That being said, I of course only have this one screenshot to judge off of, so don't shoot me. XD
I agree with prjkthack, stay with the Metro UI look. The picture above does not look good for a WP7 app.
Things missing in the current Facebook app...
Can't see who liked status-update/picture, (you can see a few in notification area but not when looking at the actual update/picture)
Can't like Comments to updates/pictures
Annoying...
When looking at a picture you have to press comment button to see/add comments (it switches to a comment view where you don't see the picture anymore), why not show comments directly below the picture?
Everything just loads so slow
Does the current Facebook app from Microsoft have the Places or Check-In feature?
Honestly, since I put Mango on my phone, there's no need for a dedicated Facebook app. Notifications are on the "Me" tile, Status Updates in the People's Hub, and chat is in the Messaging hub...
Well the most annoying thing is not having a seperate fb messaging client.
And i think its better for you not wasting your time on doing a full fb app, but rather make a messaging only app which is quick with push, so people can actually use is since this is missing from the os integration.
However with Mango we can probably pin the fb inbox to our startscreen so this will cancel out the need for a facebook messenger client. And deep linking will add the desired speed to it.
Good luck anyway thank you for the effort, i hope it will come out nice.

Soooo true ... I use m.facebook.com ..
Between the Mango integration and the FB app, we have 90% of what we need covered. I'm not sure its worth the effort to create a new FB app honestly.
One of my biggest annoyances with the Microsoft Facebook app and alot of the apps that have been released is there smoothness and scrolling speed. We have this wonderful smooth and efficient operating system which is plagued by i suppose poorly coded apps that are trying to bite of more then they can chew.
The Facebook as is very sluggish to Navigate which really annoys the **** out of me. Another problem i have noticed is with the tile notifications, when you have a notification it displays on the tile as a number then you click on the facebook and and navigate to notifications, click on the notifications then exit and the counter has not updated. I disabled the push notifications and it still has a stupid number. When you open the app it should assume you have read all the notifications like on fb when click on the notifications button. So if you can manage to fix the notifications and the scrolling speed id be a very happy man.

What about Facebook Mail/Messages (not chat, the other ones)?
There is still enough feature disparity to warrant the need of a real App.
Also, does the new "integration" update in the background? For Twitter especially, since the lack of background updates would make that useless for me.

I actually don't have much experience with WP7 and the Metro UI (other than the emulator). I will be upgrading my WinMo 6.5 to WP7 once my contract runs up, and so hopefully by then I will have more knowledge of what metro looks/feels like.
One thought I had was instead of making the 3x3 grid of pictures, making a 2xN set of Live Tiles for each of the different areas. Then do a pivot for "Pinned" friends, etc. Thoughts?

Hmmmm.... I'm curious about this. I would much rather spend my time developing something useful rather than copying integrated features.
Now, I know that on the HD2, HTC added a "Facebook Tab" that did basic stuff, but clicking into any of the different messages launched the m.facebook.com. Is this the same as with Mango?
Also, I know that some people like a consolidated feel when it comes to things like facebook. The integrated features sound great in terms of "Glance and Go", but how are they in regards to general Facebook Browsing? Do you get the full Facebook experience?
I would really like some more information about these comments. If there is no need for a dedicated app, then I won't make it.
Also, I know that Facebook limits what 3rd party devs can do, where as 1st party apps (Like the iOS and Android app) don't have those limits. Examples of this are adding places, sending messages to Inbox, Poking, etc (these CANNOT be done on 3rd party apps!) If the integrated app can do all of those, then there might not be any need to have a limited stand-alone app.
Any feedback about this would be excellent!

Mail/Messages cannot be sent by 3rd party apps... It is a terrible terrible thing I know. They had enabled it in 2009, but it got abused so they took it away. I've seen apps that work around the limitation, but I haven't found out how.
As for background apps, there is support for background threading in Mango so that should be possible!
Thank you again for all the feedback!

That makes sense, sounds like a good place to start.
So the "home" pivot would feature Facebook's main features (like feeds, photos, etc.), and then a "favorites" pivot would be custom pinned features like friends, groups, etc.?
Makes sense. Sounds good.

So, any thoughts about the usefulness of the app?
I wouldn't personally use it, the FB App itself and Mango has all I need. But competition is good and it'll be nice having more than 1 facebook app in the market.

[Q] Why Google Contacts doesn't support Hi Resolution pictures?

Hi,
This question had already been posted in 'Android Q&A' section few days back, but didn't get any reply. Hope someone can help me with this problem here.
The new ICS 'People' app allows us to use higher resolution images for contacts. And it looks great on big screens. So I spent a lot of time, updating the contacts with high resolution photos. Also I made sure that I 'Sync' ed the contacts after it is done. But now, after doing a factory reset, when I tried to sync back the contacts, it is loading only the low resolution photos of the new updated pictures and not the high resolution of those pics. I checked in GMAIL->Contacts and found they have the same low resolution ones.
Isn't there a way to sync high resolution pictures in Google Contacts?
I'd also be interested in this. Its the Google account that saves the pictures in a tiny resolution. It looks horrible when synced to ICS.
there are three ways to get high resolution pictures.
First, and the only real correct way, is to use Google+. downside is that unless your contacts are on G+ they won't get a high res picture.
Secondly, use haxsync to sync facebook with your phone.
third, manually set high res pictures for every single contact. But yes everytime you wipe your phone you'll have to redo this. However, on normal useage it seems to keep them. i know my phone has synced a few times yet i still have the high resolution pictures on my phone for 3 contacts that are not on G+ and i've rebooted or shut down the phone at least a dozen times, even flashed rom updates and they kept the pictures.
This issue has been discussed here many times.
Short, every time you sync a google contact with a picture from google to your phone it will have the ugly 96*96 resolution. There is no way around it until the contacts team changes this restriction. They are aware of the issue but no word if or when a change is coming: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=49e2b1adea1aa11c&hl=en
So wouldn't syncing your Facebook pics also be temporary since it probably saves the pics locally?
Here's to hoping Google ups the resolution of Google contacts for those who have lots if contacts that aren't on Google+ and wipe their phones often...

no, if you use Google+ or Facebook Sync the pictures are high resolution. thats because it saves that picture to your phone in addition to the google contact picture, but uses the high res G+ or FB picture.

That's too bad! What the f does G+ has anything to do with contacts photo sync. If I want to have a high res photos of my granpa and granny, should I ask them to be on G+? (One can even imagine them being on FB, but G+????)
Also now, too many devices are going to get the 4.0 update and this issue's gonna look terrible!
Even if you manually add pictures to each contact (which I did), the pictures still aren't very high resolution. ICS still resizes the images, leaving them much less sharp than the pictures I originally chose.
If we report these issues to GSMArena or other such websites, will they publish it? So that Google might consider it seriously... Like filling in a petition
I actually though about just this too.
It's apalling that Google doesn't listen to thousands of frustrated users, but hopefully they will listen to big and influential websites like GSMarena.
So we would need people with good contact to the authors of these pages.
Anybody around here knowing one or more authors?

Seems like for whatever reason, someone somewhere thinks it's better to say nothing than to tell people that it'll be a while. That or someone at google is just really bad at their job.

Facebook sync is Facebook's fault. The API is there, they are just lazy.
I'm very disappointed, this bug is very annoying.
The bigger a company is, the slower they become. Instead of having one guy do the work and fix it, you need to pass through several layers of approval and people "management" which get in the way. Not only is the request lost several times in between but even if someone at the company wants to fix it, they're told to do something else or fear the risk of being fired.
This is why progress is often achieved by small groups or individuals.

This really sounds like it could work. It's unfortunate but there's generally little incentive to change something unless a fuss is made. Look at what happened with Siri and the "best phone ever" question (Lumiagate). This stuff happens in politics all the time. Nothing gets changed until the press has a field day with it.

That's a good way of putting it. I wish this was fixed because I love seeing high-res pictures in my caller id. Unfortunately, none of my friends use Google+ and I don't use Facebook. Currently I just update the pictures of people who I've starred and, every now and then, I'll update the pictures of people I happen to have on my phone at the moment. I hope it gets fixed by the time JB is dropped.
Maybe it's cause of bandwitch or older phones that will use 96 x 96. That's why they are thinking how to get around this... Let's hope that they will soon fix this issue.
