[Q] Sprint hotspot app?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I really didnt want to start a new thread about this but I've received no help in the chat room and cant find an answer in Q&A. so... My problem is, Im trying to freeze sprint hotspot and cant find it when I search for it in the bloat freezer app. I tried freezing random sprint apps to see if that would work and nada. so if ANYONE has frozen this app already or knows where to find it/change file name in root explorer/ delete it. please let me know! Thanks in advance. Rude_Jude.

I think its actually buikt into the framework
I have searched many times for the app so i could remove it and never found it
Also the hitspot hack uses modifies framework so it kinda makes sense

Its in the settings.apk, it can be removed, but not easily.

So, I should or shouldnt remove it? And if I should, can you, chris41g tell me what file name its under or tell me how to find it? Please??

Chris already told you where it's located. It's built into the Settings.apk - unless you've messed with Android before I wouldn't touch it.
Do you just not want it because you don't have tethering in your plan or what? Just wondering since most people want it and there's a fix in the Dev section so you can use the wireless hotspot app.

I realize he told me its in the settings apk... But there are layers upon layers to look through. I already have teather so I dont need hotspot. I just want to stop any apps from automatically running. What would hot spot do for me that teather doesn't already do?

its not a simple edit, you can remove it from the xml file and the icon goes away, but its hard to get it compiled back, because it uses that xml for a signature

Infrastructure. It can be used in access point mode (AP) - the other tether apps can't. A lot of things can only connect to an access point - like the PS3, XBOX, tablets, so on. On the plus side, the Google wireless tether app can use 4G, the Sprint one can't right now unless you actually pay for it.

Extremely useful app for rooted users - LBE Privacy Guard

Have a feeling a lot of people have already heard about it, but for anyone who hasnt tried it, definitely get it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lbe.security.lite
Its an app manager that lets you control what apps have access to. You can block apps from accessing the internet, viewing your personal info and take away any permissions you dont want it to have.
A big benefit to this also is battery life will go up as a result of blocking apps which always connect to the internet to upload your data or steam ads to you. A lot of freeware apps also have way too many permissions and this lets you effectively block them.
Its the first thing I install everytime I use a new rom

I really appreciate you posting this and letting us know about this app! I don't think I would've come across it otherwise.
So I installed it and I'm just dumbfounded at all the stuff that some apps want access to....Why the f*** does Angry Birds: Space need to access my phone's GPS data?? There's an odd one!
Oh, by the way....a co-worker of mine with an iPhone smugly showed me that the functionality of LBE Privacy Guard app is actually built right into the iOS.
Not trying to turn this into an Android Vs Apple thread, but man, that kinda got under my skin.

If I recall, there's a developer option you can enable in CM7 that allows you to do just this. Just press the permission you want to block when installing the app or afterward. CM9 doesn't (to my knowledge) have this option yet, but I'm sure it will. Good day, iPhone users =).

Its scary how many apps want full control of your phone. Ive seen them wanting to read my contacts list and even control my messaging app. A lot of it has to do with data mining of their customers. All the info they collect from you is pretty valuable and the gps thing is pretty scary too. Theyre able to record your coordinates and report the info back to them. Not to mention its going to kill your battery too with them doing this.
Security apps I use
Droidwall - simple iptables for android
PDroid - like it better than Lbe, takes less resources but needs patch and waiting for ics support
Addons detector - shows which apps have "adware, spyware, etc."
Thanks William for mentioning PDroid. The app thread is here
PDroid gives message saying I needed to build somethingortheother first in order for it to work on my OG EPIC 4G .... LBE working great right outta the box though
Wow its come a long way I remember this when I first got rooted the guy mentioned using this... but its icon was red and the ui was bland they really uped it a notch =] completely forgot about this app thanks.. love it.

[Q] Thinking of moving from i4 to SIII - quick question

Hi All,
I currently have a Jail Broken i4. The only reason I bought this phone was the app MyWi, that allows me to tether using infrastructure mode and my standard data plan.
I HATE the i4. I really do. I need a new phone as the home button has been mucked up for a few weeks now.
If I read the forums correctly, I can root a new S3 following the instructions here - {HOWTO}{ROOT} No Tripping....
I assume this will leave me with the same operating system that came with the phone just rooted. (Please correct me if I'm wrong).
Here is my question.
The above statement being true, what is the best (Free or paid) WiFi Tethering app available for android that will allow me to use my standard data plan instead of purchasing a separate data plan for tethering? Please note, I can not use AdHoc mode. It must be infrastructure.
I have done some searching and this App looks promising. (Android-wifi-tethering-for-root-users)
Thanks all,
-NJ
Hi mate.
Yes after rooting your firmware will be exactly the same.
Kernel might change though depending on what root method you use.
There are lots of tethering apps out there.
My favourite is an app by Chainfire .
There will be plenty of info on here about it if you search "wifi tether chainfire"

I don't know what to say about that line of yours that I quoted.
I really hope you didn't pay for that tweak and that a friend shared it with you.
I'm a GS3 owner and lover, but iOS and the iPhone 4 was a great phone. (I was a previous iOS fan)
All platforms are fundamentally equally bad and good.
Android isn't without its issues, nor is iOS, Windows Phone, BalckBerry or WebOS (RIP).
Once you root the GS3 though you can simply CWM flash a MOD to remove the restriction AT&T imposed on the tethering functions.
Personally though, TouchWiz and AT&T muck up the awesomeness of this delightful device. If I were you, i'd look into flashing a custom ROM which typically doesn't have any tethering restrictions.

Sprint made a formal announcement today about the new Sprint Direct Connect Now App in the android market which can be found here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qualcomm.qchat.dlc&feature=search_result
Anyone seen this APK floating around online? I would love to give this a whirl on my device and see if its possible to get it working on our devices.
I couldn't find anything but I will keep an eye on it and if I find it I will post it if someone didn't already.

Yeah ive been scouring google for anything pertaining to an updated apk but everything I found just links me to old threads and the play store link. We dont have a kyocera rise in stock so I cant pull it myself.
Ill try to go into a Sprint store and see if i can download and then extract the apk file. Hope it works on our android devices =). Doesn't make any sense for Sprint to release this app only to the Kyocera Rise. It's an android app, should be compatible with all android phones. Stupid Sprint! Been waiting for this for years!

According to sprint a Direct Connect SOC has to be added to an account before you can use it. Not sure if this will be an issue with adding the SOC to a non supported device. I would like to have the application and then add the SOC to my account to further test

Since its a downloadable app from the market you could easily pull the apk. No need for root. Ill grab it when I get back to work around 6. Or you could pull the build.prop and change your device fingerprint to the rise to download the apk. I tried searching for a system dump for the build.prop but came up dry.

hmm so this would be free for me. i have a sprint everything plan and under my account i see:
Unltd Nationwide Direct Connect
Unlimited Group Connect
funny how it's included, but a feature i can't use.. anyone have APK working yet? wonder if you would have to keep the app always running (battery killer) for people to PTT you? hope it's not like zello where you have to be logged in and app running 24/7 rather than some type of Push service.
Sorry I was unable to get the apk today. The sprint store did not have a working display of the Kyocera rise. I will try another store tomorrow.
Im very interestes in getting this working. Hopefully someone can provide this apk asap. Thank you in advance to whomever does.

From what I've seen / read it there is something extra on the Rise and the LG that has the App. Also the SOC is restricted to the two phones so even if you got the app to load it would have no UFMI (or w/e the SDC equilivant is) to tie into, or attempt to provision on it. Thus no Go I think if it worked on other phones, it would be out
Try downloading it with appbrain

If it is a Play Store installable then it may have APK go directly to Data/App which u cannot view directly from the device. If it goes to System/App u can always browser through System/App folder and actually copy ANYTHING from the System folder to another location on the device. Pasting and editing is what u cant do inside of the System folder but copying allowed.

[HOW TO] Entitlement check for Unlimited Data VZW M Users

Okay all, just trying to help out.
G/F has the M and it's rather flaky with FoxFi and getting tether to work. Therefore to help some out, buy SQLite (original RAZR and MAXX owners should be familiar with this) from the Play Store.
The path will be "data/user/0/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases"
So select data > user > 0 > com.motorola.android.providers.settings > databases > settings.db > settings
After selecting settings a list will pop up. You can do one of two things. Tap the magnifying glass and type "entitlement_check" and search for that, or scroll down to line 68 (yours may be a different line) and select it.
Tap the pencil icon.
You will see a new screen that has _id "auto", name "entitlement_check", and value "1". Change the "1" to a "0".
Hit save.
You should now be able to use the stock VZW hotspot app.
(This is on stock rooted ICS, not sure if this works on the Jellybean leak, but should tide us over til some custom roms get rolling that bypass this altogether.)
This worked great on the JB update, thanks! I did need to reboot after making changes to have it take effect, but otherwise, worked great. I was able to do both WiFi hotspot and Bluetooth tethering.
Interestingly I don't need to do this to enable the hotspot even though I don't have unlimited data. Are you sure it's even required anymore?

Unfortunately for unlimited data users it is required. We don't get free tethering as tiered data users do.
Thanks seems to work fine.
worked like a charm thanks!
Used it to upload several movie files to my dropbox lol. 20mbps up is so amazing vs 2mbps on home wifi. Uploaded a video to youtube too. Unlimited data, gonna stick it to the man!
*edit* I'm on the Jelly Bean leak.
Thanks!! This worked perfectly on the JB OTA. Made the changes, reboot and BOOM. Testing the tethering right now...
Glad its working for you guys. My Dev M should be here tomorrow. So I'm excited to be in this neck of the woods for a while now. As others have confirmed...this does work on the JB OTA. :good:

Excuse my ignorance but I seem to be falling short here... what exactly are you guys doing? From inside the SQLite manager I'm selecting "data" but there is no "user" after that! Also checked Astro File Manager. Please help

Guessing you're not at the root directory maybe? Do you have root explorer? Haven't used Astro since my old phone no Gingerbread so not sure if it has root access.
Motoman, sorry bud, was at work and just got home. Got your PMs bro. :good:
Okay is your M rooted? If so then SQLite should find the root directory. (Going to come back and edit this in a minute)
ETA:
Okay in SQLite there are four tabs at the top. APPS, FILES, BOOKMARKS, RECENT
Hit the FILES tab.
Then scroll down to "data" folder and select it. Your "user" folder should be all the way at the bottom after selecting "data"
rooted on JB OTA. Worked perfectly after a reboot! Thanks
Welp thanks to tethering and the awesomeness of LTE uploading I have used an ass load of data. I uploaded some music and TV shows to my dropbox for some friends.

How to use wifi hotspot with root and xposed

Here are some instructions on how to use Wifi Hotspot after you are rooted.
install Xposed Framework from HERE
after you have xposed framework setup, download Wanam Xposed from the Play Store and install it. Go into Exposed framework app, go to modules and check (enable) the wanam mod. Reboot.
After you are rebooted, go into Wanam xposed app, goto system, check "Disable tether provisioning. Reboot
this allows you to use hotspot without provisioning, but if you go to the verizon hotspot icon or configuration, it sees it and shuts it off. So we will add a hotspot quick panel icon to turn it on.
Download and launch SQLite Editor
1. Open up SQLite Editor - Select the Apps tab on top and scroll down until you see Settings Storage and click it
2. Click on Ssettings.db
3. Click on system
4. Click on the search icon on top right
5. Type in the word notification in the Filter Value field and click ok
6. Once the results load up, tap on notification_panel_active_app_list (should be the bottom result) and click on the pencil icon on top to edit
7. In the Value field, you'll see all your toggles listed. All you have to do is add the word WiFiHotspot <-- just like that, with the three caps, with a semi colon right after. Make sure there's no space after the semi colon. Once you add WiFiHotspot, click the save button.
8. Close SQLite editor and reboot your phone. Once your phone boots back up, you should now have the Wifi toggle in quick settings like mine below!
Now, to use it, click on the quick panel icon you just made called wifi hotspot. Hit Home so you go to the home screen. Dont go to the Verizon Hotspot icon or the Hotspot configure, just use it like that and it works good. Takes a minute or two to establish internet access after your computer connects but it works, I have confirmed it.

But does this prevent Verizon from tracking the tethering? The only reason I ask ask is that I still have unlimited.

I tethered this way since I got my Note 3 and been tethering ever since I had my Droid X. I'm unlimited also.
Has anyone tested Foxfi? I have used it with my previous phones when rooted but currently it pops up the Verizon subscription thing. Would I still need to check the "Disable tether provisioning" box in Xposed? Normally I just check the box within Foxfi to start tethering.
