Rooting Verizon Xperia Play - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm deciding whether or not I should buy this phone or not depending on if I can root it.
I'm very confused with all the different versions of rooting instructions for the various types of Plays so if someone can point me in the right direction.
All I want to be able to do when rooted (if it's possible) is to remove bloatware and wireless tether.
Thanks in advance.

You can root the Verizon Xperia Play (R800x) via [HOW-TO] Root Phones w/ Android v2.2.x-2.3.x (zergRush Method) as long as you update to v2.3.3.
I used the step by step version and rooted mine before the 1 click version existed.

Just buy an unlocked gsm phone there is more support for them and not so much if a pain in the ass.

Thanks for the information. Is it pretty easy to update to 2.3.3?

Also, does it still allow for wireless tether for root app to work?
Sent using Tapatalk

It should. Use the latest version, set up WPA2 encryption and select "Nexus One (GSM)" as your device and it should work. Barnacle Tether works without any special configuring required, albeit it is only ad-hoc, but enough for tethering PCs.

I just said 'yes' when my phone asked me if I wanted to update. Verizon has pushed out that update out so at most you have to 'check for updates' and then say 'yes'.

Keep in mind, that on verizon there is no free method to unlock the bootloader, and that there are precious few custom roms that even work with it. The verizon version of this phone is practically crippled compared to other versions. I know you said you wouldn't be doing any custom roms, but I used to say the same thing myself back when I had the Original Moto Droid. After I had root, I lasted about 3 days before I was looking for custom roms to put on it.

Hey, thanks everyone for helping me out.
It sounds fairly easy to root seems like. My only other concern is if I root now and ice cream sandwich comes out next year, will I be able to update?

Yes. So long as you reinstall any apps you may have removed.
Also people, understand that not all of us have a choice of going with a GSM phone, hence us getting the 800x.

[Q] one click root 2.5.5 - virus problem

Hello all, I bought an Epic 4G about a month and a half ago, so far so good. using PDAnet and usb tethering I was able to succesfully get internet on my computer and share that connection with the rest of my network. at first internet speeds run fine, after a few minutes it starts to get really slow dipping into 3g speeds. I was thinking of rooting my phone and using one of the wifi tethering apps to see if I wouldn't have these speed slowing problems. I have looked up on several forums on how to root the phone and seems simple enough. the problem that I am having is that no matter what site I download the one-click-root program my antivirus is deleting it saying that it has a Trojan. does anyone know if in fact these new files are all infected or is my antivirus program just detecting a false positive. I am currently running Windows 7 32 bit with Kaspersky Internet Security 2011. any help would be appreciated. Thanks
You're honestly better off waiting until the official Froyo upgrade is completed on your stock DI18, non-rooted phone.
In the General forum it is was discussed that the one click root installer removes the Asphalt 5 demo .apk, and not having that may cause your update to fail. IMO, just wait until you're updated, then root the phone.

thanks for the quick reply, but haven't other Epic users with the stock DI18 been successful in rooting there phones? or have they first upgraded their roms?

Yes the one click root does work. I believe you are getting a false positive with your scanner.
After you are rooted, then you can flash a rom. More steps are involved when jumping from eclair (di18) to leaked froyo (dk28). But like I said earlier, the official froyo upgrade starts rolling out to us starting Feb 21 (monday). So you are better off waiting to root until you get the official update.
My cousins laptop was seeing it as a trojan too, so. Had to. Excuse it and then deleted it once I was done odining and rooting so he doesn't *****
Its a false positive its only because of the code that it has to implement to root or something
It was explained before I don't remember

This. The antivirus is probably using heuristic detection and noticed that the rageagainstthecage exploit doesn't appear to a program that is completely on the up and up, but that is because ratc is an exploit that has to do tricky things to get root access.

[Q]Root/Unroot

Ive been through the forum and i want some input. I would like to root.my play but im not sure which method.to use. What I want is to get n option to unroot. Im running 2.3.3, R800i. There was this option to downgrade frst to 2.3.2 and use Gingerbreak but that seem to to have a clear unroot path. And there's the doomlords easy root. Can anyone point me to th right direction?

Go with Doomlord's Easy Root. In that thread, found here, when you scroll down through the instructions, he has also provided an Unrooting method for use ONLY if you use his method to root to begin with.

I understand that rooting voids the warranty so just in case I need to use that warranty I can just unroot the device. Im not sure though if they'll know if the device was rooted even if you unroot it.

Something tells me Im gonna go with this method. Question though, would I still be able to get the official upgrade to ICS if ever sony releases one next year?
Also, any idea where I can get the adb drivers for the Xperia Play?

Factory unlocked Neo with root getting ICS?
guys, but what about this situation? (don't be surprised at my possibly noob questions)
I bought my Neo unlocked, I rooted it some time ago, but now I'm curious about the ICS update..will i have to unroot to do the update safely? I didn't delete any of the junk/unnecessary apps, i just froze them..so, I've been reading across different threads dealing with updates for rooted phones, and it seems that I'm gonna have to have to unfreeze the apps, unroot and then do the update via PC and not OTA..is that right?
what I would like to know is this: is it possible for me to uninstall all the unnecessary apps and then upgrade to ICS? I would uninstall only a few apps such as the chinese and japanese (POBox) keyboard, News & Weather, Office Suite, and probably just a few more minor ones..
Some say I can both keep root and upgrade to ICS without any problems but I read in many threads that I shouldn't do that, especially if I uninstalled any pre-installed apps..

Why root???

I just wanna know something. I'm into rooting phones. I had the galaxy s 4g and I rooted the hell out of that phone. Now I have the galaxy nexus and this things a ****in beast just the way it is, so why should I root this phone? Someone please convince me!

I've received this question a lot from users across the globe and wrote an educational application, All About Root, posted in the Android Market for free with a section dedicated to this question.
Specifically for the Galaxy Nexus, I actually have not yet rooted this device yet, for the same reasons you've already given.
I do plan on rooting soon, probably within the next few days. At any point in time, if you want to start doing serious tweaking, more than likely you'll need root access.
The most common reason I've seen so far is, Android 4.0.3 was released in AOSP but we either have 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 loaded on our devices. Some users want the latest and in order to load 4.0.3 they have to at least unlock the device, not necessarily root.
Not sure if you're using the GSM or CDMA version of the device but in the future the OTAs might not be released at the same time to keep up with the latest AOSP version.
Hope that helps!

How do you "root the hell out of" a phone? It's either rooted, or it's not

Why do you need convincing? Some apps need root. If you need to do something that requires root, then root the device.
Unlocking the bootloader is probably the real question... with that done, you can install custom ROMs and custom recovery, or root the stock ROM. Unlocking wipes the device though so it's probably better to do it sooner than later, even if you don't want to do any of those things yet.

I was looking through Roms and I have another question. Why install a custom rom if it ****s up your phones wifi signal and network strength? And video and the browser has issues. How stupid can you be this is a great phone as is no need to root or install roms.

I personally wouldn't install a ROM if it affected my wifi or signal in a negative way. Or if I didn't know that and it did, I would uninstall it.
It definitely is a great phone as-is, but it's a bit ignorant to call people stupid just because you don't see a need to root yours or install a custom ROM. Custom ROMs offer features not present in stock ROMs. If the stock ROM has all that you need, there's no need to replace it. On the other hand, some custom ROMs have features I like that stock doesn't, so to get those features I install the custom ROM.
I had CyanogenMod on my Nexus One (and still do). It has things like OpenVPN, notification power widget, trackball wake, and a lot of other tweaks that I found useful.
You need root for apps like wifi kill and wifi tether and overclock, rom manager/nandroid backup. If you ain't gonna use em then don't root, but certainly don't call people names for doing so. Getting the latest version of the OS is not the reason to root. If anything, on the Nexus devices it slows this process.

Root your Razr M now

Dan (@djrbliss) has posted the root method.

Despite my strong belief that people who are interested in rooting should buy devices with unlocked bootloaders instead of expecting the magical hackers in the sky to give out free exploits (which are in short supply), I'm once again continuing to encourage bad behavior by publishing another root exploit:
http://vulnfactory.org/public/motofail2go_windows.zip
Instructions:
1. Download and extract the entire zip file.
2. Ensure your device is connected via USB and that you have installed the latest ADB drivers from Motorola.
3. Double-click "run.bat" and FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. The exploit will ask you to press a button combination at one point.
If the exploit prints an error saying something like "run-as: Package 'com.motorola.bug2go' is unknown", then unfortunately you will have to wipe your data and cache partitions and try again.
This exploit should work on the Razr M, Atrix HD, Photon Q, Razr i (you might need to replace some of the binaries with x86 versions?), and the upcoming Razr HD.

This is great! I went with the Nexus over this and got my wife the M but glad to see I can "fix" anything down the road should problems arise that can't be mitigated without root access. I knew it wouldn't be long even though people had doubts about it.

Everyone who uses this exploit should be sending djrbliss a few bucks.
It's the least we can do as users to support his consistently excellent and unique contribution to our community.
There is nobody else in the same league doing this kind of work for us.
You can't buy it for any amount of money...
Anyone tried this with the leak?

As someone who didn't have a choice of locked/unlocked bootloader (company device, can't provide own equipment), I can't thank you enough. Once I get this through (can do it now) and can get home to access my paypal (currently on a share computer) I will definitely donate! I don't have a terrible need for root anymore with the way my Atrix HD performs, but things like ad-blocker, etc. are still very handy.
Thank you for this!!
Somebody asked if this works on the leak. I assume the leak refers to the jelly bean update? Because I just updated to jb last night. Regardless, this is the best news since i heard about this phone's release. Donation going to paypal when my paycheck comes. Thank you very much.

I'm on a Mac, so I tried running all the commands in the .bat file manually. Got no errors, and Superuser.apk installed properly, but when I try root checker or any other root apps, I got a message saying the device wasn't rooted. Tried clearing data/cache and doing it again, but still no dice. Is there anything I should try manually? Don't have access to a PC right now.

As someone who has just come over from my Samsung Fascinate and the great developer community there i want to thank you for getting this phone root !! But since i'm new to Moto and want to get root i just want to be sure there are no programs i need to install other than the instructions in the OP. On the Fascinate i had to open Odin before flashing but i can just install the ADB drivers x64,have phone turned off, and run the bat file and that is it ? thanks in advance. I did some searching and everything i read always says device specific so i just wanted to be clear.
Thanks,

[Q] New owner with a hopefully simple root question

Hello folks- New here. Took advantage of the unlimited data glitch last weekend, and upgraded from a Bionic to the blue HTC One. I've been scanning through the threads here, but quickly became confused. Can someone sum-up the root situation? I'm completely stock with a locked bootloader, and have not taken any OTA yet. From what I've been able to gather here, it's not looking good, but there could be an exploit coming after 4.3. Is this accurate? Thanks.

Correct. There was a method through HTC-dev, which is no longer available. You can send Sonic your phone for him to root via java card. Or you could not take the OTA and wait for an exploit.
