Battery consumption on Froyo2.2 - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I just replaced my battery and noticed it doesn't go beyond 4 - 5 hrs. So I was wondering if the battery has an issue or something. Can everyone using Froyo 2.2 state their battery life, please, mentioning also your phonel type.
I use a Touch Pro 2 from Sprint, that is RHOD500.
Thanks for your responses.

First the TP2 from Sprint is a RHOD400.
Second, it highly depends on usage. Lots of phone calls? Browsing? Streaming video, etc? 4-5 hours isn't bad then. If the phone is sleeping 100% of that 4-5 hours, NO radios (cell, wifi, bt, gps, etc) then that's pretty bad.
I typically get 6-10 hours (again usage ^^). Mostly idle, 10 hours. More browsing, videos, phone calls... closer to 6. I try to stick near a charger.
The port is far from perfect. The battery meter is off, and there's probably some places where power management could use some help - but it'll never sip batteries like WinMo does. WinMo is doing nothing basically, and Android isn't so great on native devices batteries... so I'm not exactly surprised Android sucks my battery dry.

I've had my lady's HTC Desire running Android in no-sim mode for three days now. Looks like it might need a charge later today. I did a 40 minute stint using the GPS and a mapping program during that time.
Suggestion to OP: Keep the backlight low, and on a short timeout. Also, disable the high speed network when you don't need it. Especially if the phone hops between high and lower speed networks frequently. Also, the battery might improve a bit after a few charges/discharges. Is it an OEM battery or a cheap knockoff?

Twice as short as in Windows
I really love Android on my TP2 and I'm amazed how well it's running on it. Really impressive, the only thing I'm less happy with is the battery usage. Even on stand-by it lasts at less then in Windows mode.
I've been comparing it now for a few days: I can do at least 1 day with a charge in Windows mode (sometimes even 2 days), but in Android mode I have to change before lunch time and before dinner to get through a day. Even while doing more or less the same things. (Turning off WiFi, GPS, sync etc do not seem to save much).
So, I'm afraid that I can only enjoy Android while there is power outlet nearby. This is really too bad as I would simply love to get rid of the whole Windows install.

Well with no SIM in of course it would last days. One dev found our port could run 65+ hours in this manner...

C'est la vie, read above. Android will never, ever be as frugal with your battery like WinMo is. Which do you want, Android and crappy battery or WinMo and good battery? Choice is yours, no one is forcing you either way. Can't have both tho.

I've actually been pretty happy with FRX7.1 and battery life. I'm consistently getting 24+ hours with my usage (mostly data, some talk).
WinMo would easily go 50% more, but a full day is enough that I can forget to put it on the charger at night and not be dead in the morning.
FaluSeyi - If it's not direct usage I would check to see if you have GPS accidentally turned on, in my experience that seems to be the thing that kills my battery if I forget to shut it off when I'm done using it.

Blame the guy that changed the phone casing before I was given the phone. lol. The front says Sprint and under the battery cover it says xxxRHOD500.

I rarely use BT, cell and messaging are my regulars and of course data. wifi doesn't work, though I wonder if it ever goes off. That leaves GPS, which I think is almost always on.

Well if you know this, then say that. Your first post would make me think that the Sprint TP2 is a RHOD500, which simply is not true.

Wifi works fine. GPS is broken to always on, read the FAQ. That's the reason your battery life sucks, you don't know how to read!!

The FAQ says something about getting a position fix, but I couldn't see anything about switching it off. How is that done? Or can't it be done?
The Desire ran 92 hours before it demanded a charge up, including the 40 minute stint on GPS + program with always on backlight. 10 month old OEM battery used daily.

It's a bug with our port. Once GPS is turned on/used, it is 'stuck on' until you manually turn it off. This bug is fixed in the new GB build.
You couldn't see how to turn it off? Settings --> Location & Security. Wow... from a native device owner, I'm kinda surprised.

New GB build? Nice news... I thought it was a dead project by now

Battery Life

Hello I have a stock Touch pro 2 NL and the battery life is what you can say not great. I have heard that there is a updated GSM-radio rom. I wish to install that on my TP2 but I want to make a backup of the roms first. So a tutorial would be nice.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thank you
C'moon...
Hi Jack
...TP2 has great endurance. I'm sure about that, I have one
If you have lousy 3g coverage, it will suck the battery empty very fast. Here's the easy solution you can try. Data connection will be disconnected automatically in 60 seconds when the phone is closed by this registry tweak.

So all that there is to do is just install it? Or have I to make a modification to the registry
Thanks
Yep, the cab file will modify the registry for you.

thank you for your quick response
Ok there is some improvement but now it is so that I must charge my phone once every 1.5 days. I heard from a frend of mine that he installed a better radio rom for his HTC and needs to charge his phone every 4 days.
Can somebody help me with this question?
It all depends on how you use your phone...
I have had days where I've used wifi a fair bit, been messing about with the phone (so the backlight has been on a lot and the processor has been used a lot), made lots of calls received and sent texts etc. THe phone at the end of the day has about 10-15% battery.
Others, I've hardly used the phone, only received and sent a few calls/texts, and end of the day it's at about 75% full.
Your friend probably only used his phone a little amount in that time, whereas you are using it a lot! That would be the reason. Also, there is the fact of the apps running in the background. If you have some which consume a lot of power (because it's always running and has memory leaks etc), then it will drain the battery quicker

I use my phone for calls, texting and push email a lot. At the end of my average day I would have 40 to 60%. This week I was on vacation and I shut off my push email and I wanted to see how long my battery would last, I used the phone only a little and only a couple of text messages, I got four days before the low battery message came on.
poor battery life
Hi guys,
I've had my tp2 for two weeks now, and I'm lucky if I get 12 hours out of it before the battery life, four if I use the media player for more than 15 mins. Perhaps I've got a dicky battery??
How to treat your battery again?? to get the most out of it..?
Here also many problems with battery life.
Even when no data connection and the device always off it drains the battery quickly.
Strangely enough, even when the device is turned off (the screen is blank) it sometime is (very) warm, so it's evidently using a lot of power.
How can I check if certain programs are running even when the device is supposed to be off? And can I measure the battery drain under several conditions?

You have a task manager right on the homescreen (top right). That'll tell you your running programs. Tapping the "X" button within programs only minimizes them. Tapping and holding X however, DOES close them. Maybe you've been racking up lots of running programs.
All I have to say about batter life...It beats the Pre, hands down.

Help. Can't Uninstall
Tried this out and it was always turning off my wireless even whena ctively using it. removed it using remove programs, but it is still turning off my wireless.
ive had my tp2 for about 3 weeks and ive noticed the more ive charged the device the better the battery has become, its like anything else, charge the battery a few times and your onto a winner, its not actually that bad but a second battery aint exactly expensive

Normally I use Wisbar, so all tasks are closed. Also I searched in task manager, but nothing shows up.
I even closed Wisbar (after I closed all other programs) and Wisbar Desktop, but it still drains the battery.
Also I notice that sometimes the screen does not come up when I press the power button or when the device slides open. (I do hear the slide open sound btw)
Maybe this is connected to the draining of the battery?

Yeah, my battery life blows as well. After one day of normal usage (calls, texts, etc), it usually drops to 30-40 by the end of the day. I'm going to try the cab and see if that makes a difference. I think my 3g coverage is ****ty though....seems to rarely connect to it.
Edit: I also tried WMLongLife with this and it already seems to help. I have it auto select 2g when the phone is not in use.
Edit: With both of these loaded, my battery life has increased dramatically. I now end up with around 55-65 percent by the end of the day.
I didn't notice any difference from installing the cab.

That's GOOD battery life. Try living with the Palm Pre. You wouldn't even last a day of battery.

Battery life

I have charged it in the morning until it was full, and started playing with it.
It was on for 9 hours until the battery was completely dead.
I used it since 11:30 until 3:30pm, then I left it on standby for a 2 hours (battery was at 14%). I came back used it for another 2 hours, and it went dead.
Everything was on except for bluetooth and GPS.
Android Operating system used 83% of the battery and all the other application were under 5%.
I did quite a bit of browsing, photos, movies, youtube, downloaded some apps, etc...
What do you all think about the battery performance?
At the moment it is charging and I will leave it plugged in until the morning. It is also turned off.
What are your experiences? Opinions?
9 hours only? That's not good ... But probably you have quite some widgets that actively sync etc. etc.
i wouldnt worry to much as you probably just received it and you must have played with it for a while, and also try turning off the auto update of facebook, email etc etc
thats kindda dispointing, ... even with updating i expected it to last at least one full day, I mean when they put many widgets they should take into consideration the battery life ... hope its cuz the battery is new, and needs some few charges to feel maximum capability
As I said, I did have everything on apart from GPS and Bluetooth. (including updates).
And yes I did use it for 6 full hours (medium screen brightness).
Downloaded apps, watched videoclips, played some flash games, wrote e-mails, wrote texts, browsed the internet, etc... funnily enough I EVEN made 1 (one) phone call!
I wouldn't worry about it though. ALL my phones only lasted for about 8-10 hours the first day when I got them.
Doesn't new Lithium-ion battery needs a couple of charging cycles before
reaching optimal capacity!?
Would be nice if someone could update us in this thread about the battery life when you've had it a few days and it's being abused less
We must however point out a couple of things regarding the Desires out there at the moment, although we certainly do not wish to discredit anyone else's reviews.
We have been informed by a reliable source that some HTC Desires have been out for review for several days now, but these devices did not come from the same source as ours. These early versions did not contain the final ROM that we have been waiting for and I am reliably informed that those devices will have essential features missing. They have also had problems with the OS crashing and serious battery issues which is clearly down to the fact that Google had not completed the ROMS when the devices were shipped.

I'm fairly sure that 9 hours of constant use is pretty damn good for any device. If I use my Touch HD for browsing the net/listening to music/ syncing etc it will die in far less than that.
Remember that it is a miracle that the iPad lasts for 10 hours of constant use, and thats got a massive battery in it!
So yea get used to it! At least while you are playing with it being a new toy and all.

dont forget that the iPad has 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED display, so that shouldnt be a reason, and dont forget that the Desire's display is AMOLED which should be a battery life saver.
For the OP, if you could try using it the same (constantly) but disable the live wallpaper

Agree with the AMOLED, but it's running a 1ghz processor along with the already perceived power hungry android.... Gotta admit that if you expect it to last more than a few hours of playing with, will be sorely dissapointed.
Compared to my HD which had a 528mhz processor but lcd screen, which lasted less than 10 hours when playing with non stop.

It's not the same thing. "LED" is a backlit LCD-display, AMOLED is an active matrix OLED-display, completely different technologies.
TFT-LCD's use a backlight, OLED's has active pixels that light up per pixel and does not need an extra backlight.
The battery life is really poor.
I went to bed last night with it fully charged and this morning it was completely dead. Albeit I left meebo running in the background along with lookout and advanced task killer.
Nothing was set to update as I've deleted the friend stream and rss feed.
I'm pretty sure this phone should last a lot longer than 9 hours on standby.
If you have read the whole thread, you'll see that there might be an issue with the pre-released models. Unlocked/retail phones coming out next month with latest software will probably not have this issue.

I think someone should actually test turning everything off except gsm. No data connections, no updating of anything. No GPS, bluetooth, sync, no applications running. See how much it goes down overnight with everything off.
That could maybe be a good idea, just to see how much it goes down. But if you can't use the phone at all, I just can't see the point of having t his phone. It's made to be used and you are supposed to be connected at all times, so if HTC has made this phone with so bad battery performance, that just basically sucks.
On the other hand, it seems that the final ROM from HTC was just confirmed at Google this friday, so im guessing these early phones out there does not have the final ROM.

My Nokia E75, i run wifi all day, with push mail, and Zozoc (WiFi/GPRS Messaging client) and i can easily go through one whole day (and few hours). the screen is TFT, non-touch, and small.
I know that we cant compare cuz they are entirely different, but the point is, the battery life should not be (and i hope it is not) that bad, even when running apps in the background. one day (or few hours below that) should be decent.

The OS in the T-Mobile versions have already been approved by google, so its not a pre-release.
and i agree, someone should try to stop live wallpaper and updates (just use it as simple phone, calls, messages and a little bit of WiFi) and see how much that goes
I quote the following from the first detailed review from techradar
The battery in the HTC Desire was 'only' a 1400mAh effort - we'd have like to see a 1500mAh option there, as is the case with so many other smartphones at the moment.
We're also a little concerned about the battery life - it dropped rather quickly, and although you'll get a day's worth of use out of it under normal use (ie web browsing, calling etc) it can drop a little alarmingly fast at times.
We had a little look at what was munching on the power so much (thanks to the Android battery meter) and it seems to be the widgets (in particular FriendStream) and synchronising that's taking a lot of the power, along with the constant flicking to roaming networks and back to 3G.
We found a big increase in battery life if we stopped updating Peep, Friendstream and emails all day long, and when set to '2G networks only' the battery life also improved to three days' use without problem.

this seems good, this is decent! i dont use 3G much, i would probably update the friends stream on demand, and with a little bit above average use, i should get 1.5-2 days without problems (based on the review)

[Hint] Battery Usage (2 days 30%)

I've always been impressed by the battery life on Defy ever since I owned it. I haven't owned other smartphones before to be able to make a true comparison but using electronic devices for a long time I can tell the battery usage on Defy can be impressive. However, there were times I noticed the battery was drained so quickly.
In my latest watchful examination of battery usage I have achived to use only 30% of the battery for more than two days. Here is a summary of my usage in the past two days;
4 Hours Music Playback (PowerAmp)
30 Mins wireless
About 16 hours airplane mode
No phone calls on my mobile but I did dial a number several times
I have fully charged the mobile on Friday morning and on Sunday morning the battery has 70% charge.
Hint:
As it was stated in user manual it is recommended to charge the phone from mains socket whenever is possible. I can confirm that I've seen battery improvement after recharging the battery by mains socket after several times.
Since I don't have a use for MMS I have renamed the APN server. The same trick can be used to disable data and that saves battery life too if you don't use your phone to push/pull data.
In the past 2 days my network type has been set to 2G only. The automatic setting certainly have dramatic affects on battery.
Before going to bed I put the phone to airplane mode since the reception in my bedroom is very weak and this increases the battery usage.
With simple measures the battery life can be extended (noticeable) more than what you'd expect.
I'm very pleased with the battery usage so far. Nonetheless, I will buy a spare battery as soon as it is available in the UK.
Happy New Year XDA
Yours are the most impressive stats for the battery use. I've set my Defy into saver mode, and the network data to 2G as well (I only use it to sync up with Gmail (plus Calendar and Tasks) and my employer's Exchange email) and get down to 50% after two days of moderate use, which is enough for me not to worry about running out of juice if I'm away from home for a few days. Yes, the Defy can be pretty frugal with battery use.
I ended up having my original Defy swapped because of concerns that the battery wasn't up to scratch and the new one's been brilliant.
I'm in 3G all the time, never put it in airplane mode, and after 62 hours I still have 20% left - that's with me having used it for some calls, texts, web browsing, facebook and a good couple of hours of Angry Birds as well.
Definitely the best smartphone around for battery life IMO.

If its the bit in the wall that the electricity comes from then its the same thing :L and yeah you can charge it from a computer USB but it takes a little bit longer

Yeah, seriously.
I'm not talking about hours of calls, more like 15 minutes or so. Maybe an hour or two total web browsing and facebook and perhaps an hour on Angry Birds.
Part of the reason it lasted so long was that I just didn't touch the phone on Christmas day at all, so that was 24 hours with basically zero use, which is unusual.
The next charge last more like 2 days, which I think is closer to how I'll be using it normally.
if you put it in air plane mode, and a couple hours later u turn air plane mode off. will u get all of your notifications? like calls, texts and stuff that people sent to u while the phone was in airplane mode
There is true gem on the Market named JuiceDeffender Beta - I used it since my Milestone and it really does what it says it does. All the hints you mentioned already included in the program and are being controlled by it. For example, as soon as you display turns off your network automatically switches to 2G. In paid version you can even adjust processor's speed when needed (underlocking of course, in terms of battery saving) However i am currently on free version and it's enough to make the battery last almost twice as longer.
I had some problems installing it on Defy, but they were all gone as soon as I rooted the phone.

How did you get the 3G -> 2G to work? I can not enable that feature, as I am not using a CyanogenMod rom and I can not download/install AOSP helper as it suggests. I am using the beta and UltimateJuice, which I purchased after seeing what features it provided. I'm using the CPU features to do what SetCPU did for me - no need to have two packages with overlapping features installed.
*update*
From the author of JuiceDefender:
In practice the only ROMs known to work are CyanogenMod (any version) and the Nexus One stock ROM..

[Mango] battery drain

follow this steps for some reason if u experience battery drain in mango
1.- Turn off the phone and pulled out the sim card.
2.- Turn on the phone without the sim card. (Why?, eerr...i don't know!)
3.- Turn off the phone again and reinstalled the sim card.
4.- Finally, turn on the phone.
Please let us know if it worked for you
I've just done it.
I'm a bit skeptical if this method actually improves anything...
Let's see tomorrow how it goes...
I'll post the result here.
The best way to resolve battery drain issues is by resetting Mango after its flashed. I did that with mine and the battery stopped pouring out like a rain drain to just sipping a fine wine.

yes resetting works...but the prob is sometimes the drain comes back...
apparently it has to do with push email and connections..
especially yahoo mail.....maybe the telco is not playing friendly with this one

confirm, it works.
Data connection is the problem of battery drain if we've got data connection off, wifi off, location and bluetooth off battery drain is minimal, I can say 1-2% per 5/6 hours in sleep (during night) with data connection (during sllep) about 5-10% in the same time

I did that anyways cause everything was amuck after the update. My HD7 gets like 4 hours battery life while browsing on a full 3G connection. And that's not a 4 hours of having the screen on/using it, either... Already tried a different battery, no change.
Yes, the data connection drains a colossal ton of battery, not helped by this phone's small battery size.
They need to add quick toggles for GPS, Bluetooth and stuff like that. 3rd party apps clutter up my app menu so I don't install those. Just need a quick toggle somewhere, or add the command to the voice recognition system ("GPS Off/On", "Bluetooth Off/On", etc.).
It's much easier for me to manage battery on the Vibrant because Turning off Superfluous features like WiFi, GPS, and Blue Tooth are only a swipe and a tap away. Not so much on WP7. I never turn off my data connection, so I'm confused why Microsoft added a Data Connections app, but nothing for GPS, WiFi, or BT. Just need to add in some toggles somewhere... that are easily accessible.
I don't understand how you get 4 hours when I play music/podcasts all day at work, text all day, use apps, and go online & my HD7 makes it through at least my 9 hour work day
Sent from my HD7 using Board Express
apparently sim issues in the OS cause battery drain problems
THis is a problem found , even in IOS and android
Wp7 should be no exception
I own a Focus and I started a thread exactly because I found a similar issue. However, the "drain" wasn't present in 7660 (Mango beta).
Indeed, data connections have a 10-20% negative impact on battery life compared to beta (at least on my Focus), but the heaviest drain I got from apps that run in the background. Once I disabled those, the boost is more than noticeable.
I will also try what OP described. Btw, how/where did you get to that?

well i did it works, i am not sure how but such a procedure , may reset something in the phone
maybe some issues with signal.
Well for me it did nothing...

Last week I disable the apps that are running in the background and I noticed a small boost in battery perfomence.

Tried restoring in zune to nodo
it seems microsoft does not want u to go back to nodo
anyone can confirm?
the phone restarts with the black screen of the phone connected to computer picture . Says restoring , then throws up an error and restarts to normal
But something peculiar happened. My battery life improved after this error message. not sure why..
has it got something to do with zune "resetting" ot "modifying the phone??

Either you are lying, or you are mistaken and are talking about another phone.
Because Mango won't last that long.

I never said I understood. I just know that the battery drains ridiculously fast and I lost over well 10% an hour, easily. When it's at 67% the battery saver says 2 hours remaining, and it's not lying. It has worse battery life than a cheap laptop.
Unusable as a daily driver because it dies way too damn fast.
I wouldn't call it horrible on my Focus, but it is definitely more of an issue than it was with NoDo. Following the same usage patterns as before I am lucky to get 12 hours out of a charge, where on NoDo it would just barely last through a 16 hour day. So I either charge it midway through the day, or don't use it as much. Right now I'm not using it as much .
I found change the Brightness to low instead of Automatic saves a lot of battery usage, I am so surprised.

Yeah but in daylight you can't really see it then. Which is too bad.
I actually would've thought that the Focus would have a better battery as they have the AMOLED going on.

I found that out many months ago. I don't know if it makes a difference on all phones, but it significant on the Focus. Unfortunately, my Mango battery drain observations are with the brightness already on Low.
The Focus has a Super AMOLED screen, which has 5x the outdoor visibility and 20x the viewing angles of the HD7. That may work for that phone, but it would make the HD7 unusable for me outdoors; and I'm assuming many other people. It only has an LCD screen. With automatic brightness I can already see my own reflection in the screen more clearly than the actual phone/OS images...

this makes me feel better that I picked Samsung phone, I was regretting Samsung focus because It randomly reboot and also after 10-15 mins HD video recording, I suspect it is quality issue.

Bad batter

this phone sucks, you will have a huge screen but with automatic lighting seems drawn on cardboard, the reception is crap, my girlfriend with a lg optimus one has 3 notches and I travel to 1 here in the bedroom. And the absolute most ridiculous thing is the battery, are practically forced to go out with this and the galaxy's, fortunately, not yet sold, it takes at least 2 refills daily. Check it out and tell me if it does not sell a phone like this ****.

Congratulations on a useless post.
If that's the only battery life you're getting then you should really look at how you have your device set up. I easily get 12-15 hours on heavy use and more than 24 hours on light use (moderate use is somewhere in between). I use auto brightness, and keep bluetooth, gps, and wifi turned on all the time. I have facebook syncing and push email going and I have no battery issues at all. I suggest you take a look at your device configuration and also you may need to calibrate your battery.

so you are suggesting to turn wifi, bluetooth and gps on all the time for better battery life? really?
Mine is currently on 1day and 7hours on battery, still with 30% left. You need to set it up properly mate..

Nowhere in what I posted did I say that. Try reading with understanding next time. What I said was I have everything turned on and I still get good battery life, so if yours is lacking perhaps you should take a look at how your device is configured. That a bit clearer for you?....
OP, your post has made my day today!
However battery life depends on how your device usage is. People with carefully set usage patterns can extract the most. For e.g. I use Locale to set a certain profile at night that switches off wifi, data usage, etc. That is one way to maximise battery life.
Edited your title to be proper.

I'm having similar battery issues, a heads up on how to set up the phone for a better battery life would be very much appreciated.

Okay let me further clarify myself. When I say look at how your device is configured I mean look at what you have running. Do you have things syncing frequently in the background? Do you have apps installed that constantly wake the device? How many background apps are you running at once. I don't have any special configuration on my device. I have everything turned on as far as bluetooth, wifi, and gps. I use push email, facebook set to sync every 4 hours, weather set to sync every 6 hours, google reader set to "download frequently viewed feeds every hour", currents set to sync every 6 hours in the background (wifi only). With those settings my battery life is pretty good. When I'm not using my phone is drains between 2-2.5% battery per hour, that should give you a bit of a point of reference for what you should be getting when idle. Here's an app here I stumbled across that can show you what's waking your device http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 Hope this helps you out.
Battery is pretty good to me, under normal usage easily over 24hours.
I have had no problems with my battery or screen, not sure where your setup went wrong but listen to the posters before me and less ranting and maybe you'll make the best out of an awesome device
My battery is great! Better than any other smart phone iv used, signal is great swell and the screen is awesome
I love this phone lol

I see in your screenshot the GPS and the screen were on for most of that time.
And by "on" I mean the GPS was really on with a fix, not just "on standby" and ready to be automatically activated when a program requests it.
No phone I have ever owned has ever got more than about 4 hours from the battery when I have been using the GPS. The simple fact of the matter is the battery will discharge very quickly when using GPS. That's not a fault of the Nexus, that's just how it is.
Bad battery?
That screenshot shows you've been absolutely caning the **** out of your phone. Nothing will have a good battery life with usage like that.

QFT. Almost half of it has been screen on, GPS on. No phone can stand up to that for long.
Cool story.
