I'm sorry. I'm talking about using your phone as a WiFi receiver not to transfer files. Basically 3G tethering for WiFi.
But thanks anyway.

What exactly do you need, I don't understand this WIFI receiver part, do you want your phone to act as WIFI AP to be able sharing your 3G/WIFI connection to your PC?
If this is the case then it depends on the ROM that you are using, Cynogenmod has this built in. It's called WIFI tethering.

What I mean is instead of tethering 3G you tether the mobile WiFi connection.
And yes I'm running CM7. I'm NOT looking to make a hotspot.
In other word you use your phone to connect to the WiFi and then tether the connection through USB and then the PC is indirectly connected to the WiFi by using the phone
Sorry if this makes no sense.

Do you mean plug the phone into the PC via USB cable and then connect the computer to wifi?
Edit: you modded your post and answered my question before I posted it! Your mind reading skills are excellent

Maybe it would be easyer but common why buy a WiFi dongle when your phone could do it for you?

Ok. But dongles are specifically made to do this task whereas a phone is not!!!
Did you check the post I mentioned in wildfire dev.? I think its what you are wanting.

Ok, so you need usb tethering? Am I right. Settings-Wirelles and networks-Tethering & portatble hotspot-USB tethering, does this help?
Connect phone to Wifi and enable USB tethering. Havent tried it, but it look like functionality you are searching for.

Ok I get it, and my apologies for being rude.
Every post I read on the subject across various forums implied that this method uses your 3g instead of keeping your wifi connection active, i haven't tried it myself for a while and i know it didn't work for me before on a previous nightly but if you say it keeps wifi connection open and allows your PC to connect then I trust your judgment and would say try that before installing an app to do the same job.

Alright thanks. Will give it a go. Im guessing that it will work on the latest stable on CM7? Just making sure.
Edit: It connected and didn't turn the 3G on and kept the WiFi in the background. The PC says its connected to a network but not the internet, must I download a, client side application or what must I do to configure it?

You don't need any client app on your PC. It's quite difficult to identify cause this way. I don't know your set-up, what OS are you using, do you have HTC drivers installed (which version)?
My setup is:
Phone:
Wildfire S-OFF
CM7 nightly 225
PC:
Win 7 SP1
HTC drivers
If you don't have drivers, you can try these ones.

HTC Tytn Acting as a Wifi Adapter

Hello All,
I would like to connect my laptop and my HTC Tytn using the USB Cable and then use the HTC Wifi Adapter to connect my laptop to a hot spot?
Is that possible?
Thanks in advance!
I *think* this is possible but I honestly have no idea as I have never tried it, it is only an idea.
Here is how you would do it (in theory):
1) Connect phone to wifi spot.
2) Turn on Internet Connection Sharing on the phone, selecting USB mode
3) Connect laptop to phone with USB cable.
If all goes well you will have access. I have only done this though with a regular Edge/3G connection, never with a wifi connection, so I can't be sure it will work like that.
Your other answer is to just buy a wireless card for your laptop, they're not that expensive and will be faster wifi then what the Hermes has.
Nope, does not work with the standard internetsharing app.
And as far as i know there is no existing app. that can share the wifi. If there is, i like to know too!
I believe you can but you have to do a registry change that for internet sharing app that changes the input from the cellular modem to the wifi card.

Doesn't work that way - it's rigged to share the 3G/GPRS via wifi, not the other way around.
Have a read through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332360 it mentions a few different combinations.
Thank you all guys!

No, that is about creating a wifi-acces point of your WM-device. The question here was to create a wifi-adapter.
But i searched a lot of threads about this, and this confusion is everywhere.
Yes, this is about creating a AP...i'm going to keep looking....

Correct, but a few pages into that thread people ask about different combinations of public/private interface, and the current known possibilities and limitations are discussed.

im trying to do this at the moment too, getting the computer to notice the usb connection as a network card or modem is going to be the trick i think.
i should just spend the $30 and get a wifi dongle from ebay.
Yes st3v3 but that would be easy... LoL

one you plug the phone via usb into the computer and use it as a modem, and the other (i assume you mean wifi router or similar apps) is wireless..either way the pc uses the phone as a gateway and uses whatever connection (edge/wifi etc) the phone is connected to.

Desire to use PC's internet

Is there anyway I can have my desire use my PC's internet when it is connected via usb?
At this stage I dont have wifi at work and cant use that method.
Essentially I want to reverse the direction of tethering when the phone is connected to my computer.
Thanks, Dean
Unfortunately, reverse tethering or connecting the phone through computer's Internet connection (through an ad hoc wifi) is not possible, which is quite annoying. It would be nice if this type of feature, although highly unlikely, could be incorporated an upcoming ROM update for example.
That is annoying, especially since I could do this with my old WM - although thanks for the reply and info.
I wonder if it could be done through an app perhaps.
Cheers, Dean

Yes it's extremely annoying. I had this on my HD and HD2, but i really don't know why HTC could not incorporate this with the Desire. Afterall, it's a desirable (excuse pun) feature.
it has nothing to do with your phone, since it all depends on the host computer. On mac: you can do it easily by sharing your internet connection in system preferences.

maybe i misunderstood you, but its perfectly possible to make an adhoc wifi network, and connect to the internet on your desire

it has everything to do with your phone. If the phone has no interface for it, it won't work.
Can't say whether it works or not, just saying that it does not depend solely on your computer

If your computer has a wifi card (laptops usually do, desktops don't) you can create a local network and connect your desire to it.
No idea if it's possible over a wire
You don't need to create an ad-hoc network, just download connectify and use it as a hotspot on your laptop, then connect the Desire to the hotspot you just created and that's it.

Ahh that is handy!
Thanks for the tip
I created an adhoc network following this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx
The host laptop itself can see the adhoc network, but desire cannot.
Any ideas?
Maybe I'm wrong but AFAIK Desire can't 'see' ad-hoc networks, only access points. You can get internet from PC, but only using Connectify under Windows 7 or by using advanced magic under Linux.
Am I right or something has changed lately?
BTW: does anybody share internet from Linux? Any suggestions?
As far as i know, you can only see an ad-hoc network if you have the desire rooted and change some files somewhere (can't remember which ones...), either way the next best thing is to use some kind of software that creates an Wifi Access Point.
I don't get it: why would you want to connect to the internet via your PC instead of directly connecting to your WiFi router ?
Maybe when you only have a LAN-connection?
Or Maybe when your in Work and only have a Lan Setup
and want to access / download things on your phone,
Reverse USB tethering would be AMAZING!!!!!

Stupid me, just hadn't realized that still not everyone has a WiFi capable router nowadays...
The problem with ad-hoc internet sharing is that your host PC still needs a WiFi connection. You can't use internet through USB. I've tried it yesterday at work (yes, for the Froyo update ), but no succes.
Having a smartphone in a country with high mobile data costs is like having a Ferrari to do your local grocery shopping Fortunately I'll have unlimited mobile internet next week. So I can finally use my Desire as intended.

Bluetooth tether to tablet

Sorry if this has been brought up already but for some reaskn i cannot do a search on the forums. Trying to Bluetooth tether to my transformer tablet to share the internet connection from my epic touch.. I am on caulkins el29 from. I get them both paired but the two never connect, just says paired but not connected. Is there a way to do this to get it to work or is this something sprint disabled?
Not sure about bluetooth but why not use the regular hotspot if you're just using it for internet access?

Guess I figured the Bluetooth might be harder for sprint to track but I suppose the experts here at xda have taken care of that with the hot spot mod.

yeah, but, if you want to be extra sure use the 'wifi tether' app....
....but I wouldn't worry about it either way.
I didn't know Android devices could connect as a BT-DUN client....I know you can be the server with certain apps, but, the client thing is news to me...not that I ever looked into it, lol.

Tethering not working on a Win 7 PC

The problem that I am having is that My tethering on my Galaxy S 3 with C-Rom KK-v6.6-20140520, works on laptops but not on a PC with a wireless pci card or a wireless usb antenna, connects to the tethered connection but would not open pages in browser. the connection on the pc says internet access but won't open websites, hope you can shoot some lite on this matter thank you.
Try HTTPS://WWW.Google.com
From there look up changing the user agent string in Firefox.

Usually when tethering does not work, it gives you a page that asks you to pay for the extra service. You said all you got was page not found, so it appears this isn't the issue. No idea what it could be. Obviously its a problem with the computer, and that means it could be one or more of many different things that could be causing it. Have you tried any different browsers?

Hello Doc
Thanks for helping me on this matter, yes I have tried different browsers Google, Firefox, IE.
the weird thing is this connection works great on any Laptop. but not on a desktop, I also tried different wireless adapters too.
I also did a reset on the CMD ""Netsh Winsock Reset" on the PC it's just weird.
Might have something to do with your security suite (A/V, firewall, etc). Or simply just how your computer is set up to use the network is different somehow. Could be due to different updates applied to the laptop vs the desktop, or another program interfering. Might have been something different in the initial config of the computer itself, or just the network settings... Theres just too many possibilities imo. Unless getting lucky you could potentially spend several weeks posting back and forth trying different things. Might just be easier and faster to reformat/reinstall Windows and start from scratch, if its that important of course. No guarantee that would fix it though, but would have the best chances for it to be quickly resolved.
