[Q] Galaxy Nexus wifi death grip again? Probably YES. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Look at this video:
LINK
You can clearly see that, as the guy keeps the hand off the back of the phone, the wifi signal boosts up from zero to 3 bars.
In all the review as well, you can notice that as the reviewer grips the device, the wifi signal goes bad.
Damn it, again, as the Galaxy S2, wifi grip issue.
Thank you Samsung, Aloha Nexus.

There are very few phones that don't do this. To antennas used to be at the top of the device away from your hand, but ever since someone decided phones give you cancer they moved the antennas to the bottom.
I'd rather have cancer and actually get reception.

If we stopped this form over function nonsense the manufacturers could put proper antennas on phones like they used to have. Then this sort of thing wouldn't be a problem.

You don't use wifi when you brings your phone near your head c'mon...
Wifi connection is used when you use web end emails...
A lot of people had complained about GS2 wifi issue and Samsung did nothing in this Nexus, this seems to be the thuth.

You're right.
But are you telling me Samsung is the only company that fights for our health?I've used iPhone 4, Nokia, SE Xperia Arc, and Lg Optimus instead want to kill us? None of those had wifi grips issues.
C'mon. It's simply a wifi issue as it was for the GS2.

People REALLY shouldnt be holding these plutonium slates to there heads.

A simple case should solve this problem. Not an excuse, nor an apology, by any means but since Samsung can't learn from it's mistakes it'll have to do.

With my GS2 I've tried different cases (Casemate, silicon ones etc.) but this solved very very little the wifi issue.
It's sad because at work I need wifi as hell, and I was the only one among my colleagues (TBH another one with a HTC Sensation has similar problem using it landscape mode) that has no wifi signal.
Cannot spend 500£ to have such a poor wifi

Yes, actually. Phones have antennas they use for WiFi, 3G, 2G, etc.. Covering antennas lowers their ability to transmit and receive. So nearly all phones will have this issue. Crazy idea... Where do you propose they put the antennas so that they transmit properly? do you want pull-out or rubber antennas again?

Man this is going to suck. I don't know if I can deal with this. This might put me over the top.
None of my phones ever had this. I travel alot and I'm giving up one of my phones (always had a Verizon blackberry and some GSM Smartphone) but I can't go solo with a phone with spotty wifi.

Just ordered my SGS2 online!

Do you guys think I made the right choice of ordering the sgs2 instead of the Amaze?
How's dev so far for this phone? Any recommendations you guys can give as far rooting, custom rom & kernel?
So excited to get this new phone!

Yes you did make the right chose indeed! The development is kinda slow at the moment. People wasting so much time deciding between the amaze and sgsii. Once we get root, expect the development to kick off and some goodies!
It's all waiting on the root, then it's on!

which SGS2 model did you order?
I just decided to read the reviews for the phone on t-mo.com (sort of the final step before I buy one after work today just to make sure there aren't any massive issues people have been reporting that I've missed) and I have to say, and I apologize allgamer because this is sort of off-topic, they were ****ing hilarious.
One guy claimed this phone should not be advertised as a non-LTE phone because it is a LTE device (huh? HSPA+ is definitely the same as LTE...waaaaait...). Another claimed that because there was no wifi calling, you couldn't surf the web on wifi! OH EM GEE GAIZ U CNT SUFR TEH WEBZ! Wait no...My Nexus S can't do Wifi calling and I can (and do) use it on WiFi all the time. Same with my Epic 4G. Same with my Evo 4G. Same with my MT3G. Same with my wife's Evo Shift 4G. Same with my Wife's Nexus S. Wow, I guess samsung must have really screwed the pooch or something to make it so that wifi calling was linked to all wifi use. Yikes! They better fix that soon! (That was sarcasm, FYI).
On a serious note though, I've done the reading, compared to the Amaze and watched the Galaxy Nexus launch and I'm not convinced any of them are or will be better than this phone on t-mo. The only real huge selling points of the GN (compared to the SGS2) are the HD screen and ICS; we'll get ICS and .15in diagonally larger isn't really that much so oh well. As for the Amaze? Its really only got better resolution which I couldn't find an issue with in store and I have pretty discerning eyes. Yes, I could see the difference but I couldn't see it making an impact on my daily life.
In summation, and as a non-owner of the SGS2 I'd have to tell the OP that yes, you did in fact make the right choice!

I am getting the Galaxy Nexus just because it has no buttons. To tell the truth our phone is bigger because the virtual buttons take of space on the screen. Other than that the galaxy nexus has no real selling factor besides icecream sandwich.

Sprint: 'We're taking the iPhone 4S speed issue seriously'

Wow, media coverage, actual recognition of a serious fcking problem from an executive and a pledge to do something about it. As an E4GT owner this doesn't make me feel like a 2nd class customer at all, not one bit.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-20129291-94/sprint-were-taking-the-iphone-4s-speed-issue-seriously/
My brother is on Sprint and in need of a new phone. Tell me why I had difficulty recommending he get an E4GT over an iPhone 4S? If I told him he should get an E4GT and he ended up with the LOS bs, OS battery drain issues, game app crashes that I have (not to mention that our speeds are just as ****ty ans the iPhone 4s's), I'd feel like an [email protected]
I'm new to Android, never had an iPhone and I generally dislike "iPhone people" and their undeserved product elitism so I'm not going anywhere. Still (and quite sadly), I couldn't wholeheartedly recommend the E4GT.
I had an iPhone 4s it has real battery issues I had to charge twice a day sold it for 680 and bought a epic touch for 3+ bills . And it lasts all day, they are both good phones iPhone OS is very smooth but the screen was tiny, even my gf chose her nexus over it, I'm not a fanboy of either. IPhone has better apps and stability. Android requires a learning curve some just don't want or care for but everyone has a choice no need to be haters

Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I hope Sprint is just playing dumb and that they really know all there phones are getting crappy speeds on their network. It's the network not the phone.....
Seriously, every mobile website should post tests of Sprints 3G speeds throughout their whole line of phones and really put this info out there already. Maybe we needed the iPhone to get Sprint's ass moving but speeds have been terrible way before the iPhone hit so I hope people don't believe the iPhone ruined the network.

He may be referring to the fact that the signal meter has, historically, been a measure of 2G CDMA signal strength which would have nothing to do with your 3G signal strength.
I don't know if they still do it this way since 3G is used more often than 2G it seems these days...but I know my Evo4G's stock meter was 2G.
Not to mention a clogged up overburdened tower ain't gunna do **** for you, perfect signal or not.

All I'm trying to say is, who cares if it's the iPhone that pushes Sprint to fix the network quicker, as long as we get it fixed.
I understand getting butt hurt because it feels like yea were second class next to Iphone,, but the Iphone has more exposure and if its showing the slow data speed and gets it fixed I don't really care. and really neither should anyone else.
What bugs me the most is they are giving so much attention to the iphones SLOW data connection but none to the ept4g NO data connection

I think people are bothered that sprint cares so much about their iPhone users which will be around 1 million they say, but what about the other 19 million Sprint users who have had slow data speeds on non iPhone devices.
Non iPhone users still outnumber the amount of iPhone users on Sprint. Sure it's great that they will fix their network just for the iLosers but it still makes the rest of us feel like Sprint don't give a hoot. If all of Sprints Android users left, it would certainly out number the amount of iPhone users.
Maybe we all just need to buy an iPhone and keep it as backup so if we have any problems, we just hook the iPhone up on the line, then call Sprint so will actually care about our complaint.

Exactly. Fixing iPhones slow data probably isn't going to do a damn thing for our LOS, and definitely won't have anything to do with E4GT OS battery drain or any other issues we are mostly all plagued with.
At best we might get improved data speeds because of iPhone, while all of our other issues probably get even less attention because of it.

Myth or Reality: GNex Problems

Ok, so the ongoing "on my third replacement" discussions baffle me. Personal experience is nothing but good - bought VZW GNex at launch, upgraded wife's Fascinate a few months ago to a GNex (only 1 sort of valid issue, but not worth a return), and still loving the device. [Side note - not loving Verizon's delay in rolling out JB]
Popular issues that makes folks say this phone is crap:
1. My signal is weak. Welll...check your local network, and try a signal in the open air. Problems inside your home or at work? It's called a building folks, and those wall thingies? Yeah, they tend to block radiowaves with all of that electric, water pipes, and insulation running through them. I had both Nexi side by side recently in the open air, and indeed hardware version 10 had a 6dB worse signal...until I set down my version 9 GNex, and moving the v.10 device 1 inch to the right suddenly shot the signal to a BETTER dB reading than the v.09. AIRWAVES - they move, and phones sitting side by side may have a different dB value simply because of AIRWAVES.
2. I can't hold a 4G signal. Check the threads and the Google issue trackers - it's regional, which implies that it's Verizon's issue, not the phone's.
3. Phone randomly reboots. Valid issue, but software related that was corrected with 4.0.4.
4. Screen has a purple tint. Somewhat valid (only complaint about wife's GNex), however appears software driven as increasing brightness to maximum cures the issue.
5. "I'm suddenly having [name the issue] problems. Oh by the way, I just flashed a custom ROM, didn't follow any directions on the XDA threads, and really didn't know what the heck I was doing." That's not a phone problem, that's a YOU problem.
5 examples, none actually related to bad hardware. The GNex is the best device I've ever owned and is a reliable performer. What many should do is lower their expectations - the Nexus is not the "perfect solution", but a Google Experience Device that gives the user the experience that Google intended without a bunch of manufacturer skins and carrier bloat ware. For those 2 reasons, the Galaxy Nexus is spectacular.
Discuss.

Phones are massed produced. There are bound to be some bad eggs. No device is 100% perfect. I get the frustration as its a pricey piece of equipment, but this is the harsh reality of things. I've had this phone for a week and I absolutely love it. Hell, my Nexus S was a bad egg and I'm glad I'm not using it anymore. And I have also noticed a lot of these network issues only seem to crop up with the CDMA versions.
#4 seems to be the fault of amoled screens. Had it on the 1st gen sgs at low brightness levels too.
good day.
I have not experienced any of those issues with my Verizon nexus. Although I'm rooted and am not running stock.

Only problem I've had is a couple weeks after purchase it wouldn't take a charge, icon and everything would show up bit no power. Sent it off and it came back works great they had to replace the microusb port according to the work order. Others have had this problem also. Crap happens and it was fixed promptly under warranty so I'm satisfied.

Anyway, it is when my scrambled eggs start talking to me I have a problem. The other day they yelled at me for adding to much pepper on them. The waitress agreed with the eggs. I told her she should seek professional help if she though it was normal for my eggs to talk to me. :silly:

S3 Service

Thinking of getting rid of my S2 and getting S3 wanted to find out how is the 3G service on S3 in the NY/NJ area . S2 I get Wimax which is ok . I had gps issues with my S2 but got solved after Sprint replaced it .
Any issues with S3 I need to be aware off.

Data connectivity/signal is a very one sided thing. It's 99% tower.
Meaning... no matter what phone you have, you'll likely get the same speeds using the same protocols. With that in mind, you'll not get WiMax of course, so you won't get that speed.
But at least on the S3, you'll be on the LTE technology, which is being actively deployed all over the country, and off of the WiMax, which is no longer being implemented or improved upon, and will be decommissioned in the next couple of years.
But honestly at this point, I would just wait till May to see what they come out with.
The S3 is great and all, but you're at a turning point where if you wait just a little longer, it will be better I think.
Since you're already on the S2 and WiMax is available in your area and LTE isn't, there's no reason to move to another device really...
I cannt wait and sold my phone already . Need a new phone so either s3 or evo lte

I came from an Evo lte. I kinda regret switching to an s3 but don't. Only reason I switched was because of the speaker and call quality is horrible. The rest on the Evo I loved but the call quality made me switch.
So s3 has much better call quality then evo lte

Ive owned both phones. But overall decided the gs3 because of development

Idk if it was my Evo but call quality was horrible on it and speaker was no where near as the gs3. That's the reason I got the s3. Good speaker. Good call quality.

"Thinking about selling" and "sold" are two different things, tell us what REALLY happened or is happening and you'll get a better response.
Now, as to recommendation... This is ALL personal preference... With that... From a flat out "looks" standpoint... I personally dislike the weird color design they've done with the HTC EVO 4G LTE, Samsung's much more sleek and I personally like my device to not stand out like a sore thumb. Samsung's nailed that I think.
Now, from a usability standpoint, I've not had very much time to play around with the 4G LTE, but when I did, it felt very similar to my old 3D, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I personally dislike Sense. There are a few things I like about it, but in the grand scheme I always ended up using a different launcher.
The next point is freedom... HTC locks down their device pretty heavily. So, if you're going to root/unlock it, HTC's got some safeguards in place to prevent that and also a way to track that you have unlocked it. (They are all bypassable, but just more difficult to unlock...) Samsung doesn't lock theirs down as heavily. So that's a huge plus for me as well as many others, because from day one, it's unlocked, rooted, freed from restrictions.
So, if you don't root at all... and you are also content with HTC Sense, then you can go with the 4G LTE, but I've also heard many people that have returned their 4G LTE for an S3, for other issues, such as LTE not working unless you reboot the data services...
Samsung's also a little quicker on the updates for their devices and also don't End Of Life one of their flagship devices inside of a year. (EVO 3D is a great example of that...)
Personally I would recommend the S3, but it's of course all personal preference.

Wifi signal reception is really bad in Nexus?

Hi,
I have a weak Wifi signal here. And we have some gadgets here (few ipads, laptop, galaxy S3 and my Nexus).
All of them work really great except my Nexus Nexus doesn't catch Wifi signal almost at all.
I even installed Fraco kernel and enabled Wi_Fi PM FAST which claims to boost Wifi Signal.
Can anybody confirm that Wifi doesn't work in Nexus so well as it works in other electronic devices.
I can confirm that because I can compare with other devices at this moment.
According to some people here on XDA, such as in this thread, you have a defective unit.

However, in the real world where people actually tell the truth, the fact of the matter is that the Galaxy Nexus has a weaker Wifi signal than other smartphones, and you just have to deal with it. I myself have noticed that the Gnex gets the weakest signal out of any phone that has connected to my router, and we're not the only people who have mentioned the Gnex and its weaker Wifi signal.

The guy is sharing his experience and you call it trolling just because u don't agree with him? Seriously I love this hegemonic thinking on this forum. Who gives a damn what was posted in another thread?

I'm helping the guy get the truth about his device, or is stating the fact that the Gnex has weak Wifi officially considered a troll now?

My g'nex gets decent signal. Right now I have my Zune HD, Galaxy S 4G, PSP, nexus 7, and g'nex connected to a weak WiFi signal and my nexus devices are the only 2 that are loading web pages and such smoothly without random pauses, PSP is close behind, Galaxy is iffy, Zune is basically useless. My iPod touch 3G (which isn't with me at this moment) is also useless on this connection due to constantly losing connection, ps3 also drops connection periodically, laptop works smoothly.
So while I don't doubt there are some phones with better WiFi connectivity, the WiFi isn't bad on my g'nex.

I can second that.
WiFi is not bad. It is decent on my gnex too. I've never had a problem to connect to any network so far. No big difference between nexus and other phones in areas with strong signal. It's actually even better than on my old HTC phones. However as I posted in different thread in areas with very weak signal I noticed that my old galaxy S2 and especially moto droid razr performed slightly better. (one signalbar that made a difference.) Nothing dramatic.
With my current setup I can get about 100 meters away at least, with one wall in between.
