http://www.head-fi.org/t/306883/upd...er-boa-d1-lyrix-microamp-vivid-v1-nuforce-xm5

Woooooo looks like there is a good number of phones out there already. Yet nobody tried on with the external usb DAC, no website gave any review about that feature. Smells fishy about this feature.

You can connect joysticks, game pads and other input devices to your phone. If they work without special drivers or adapters on your PC, they will probably work with your phone."

The OP is not looking for an input device. He's looking for unprocessed digital audio out via the MHL interface. There seem to be several MHL cables out there (mostly HDMI interfaces), but so far as I know nobody has tried to connect to an outboard DAC via USB. It will largely depend on whether the circuitry and firmware in the phone enable digital audio out via USB.

I don’t know what is a (USB) input device, because USB is a bi-directional bus: a USB DAC sends/receives USB commands to/from the PC or smartphone like Nokia N8.
The key sentence of the "Galaxy Nexus Help" from Google is:
“If they (USB devices like USB DAC) work without special drivers or adapters on your PC, they will probably work with your phone."
Does ICS have USB audio driver?
Probably yes: “USB class for audio devices”.
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/usb/host.html
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/hardware/usb/UsbConstants.html
Is the ICS’s USB audio driver compliant with standard USB DAC(s) which are compliant with the standard PC’s USB audio drivers??
Does the GN support the ICS’s USB audio driver??

That's why I am trying to reactivate the subject from time to time.
BTW, thanks for that.

I would try to connect mine to my FiiO E7 but I don't seem to have any Mini USB to Micro USB cable lying around. ):

Maybe you need something like this?

Yeah if no one has tried this by the weekend I might go look around for one. Somewhat interested myself if this would work.

To get this to work, if it can even work in the first place, you need the modified kernel until Google fixes USB hosting on the Nexus. With USB Hosting enabled, you then need a micro-b USB to USB female OTG cable such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Micro-USB-Hos...2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322188402&sr=1-2

Any update as to whether or not the E7 works when connected with a USB OTG cord?

I second the request for an update.

If I could find my E7, I'd test it for you.. but it's currently MIA..
edit -
Found it, but it's battery is dead.. has to charge..
edit 2 - Audio doesn't output out of the E7.. is there some app I need to change the audio source? It does not appear that android changes over audio output on its own..
Probably something that has to be specifically implemented at the kernel level.. just the basic USB OTG doesn't seem to be enough.

"Yes, a future OTA will enable USB Host, and everything will be cool. I don't know exactly when that'll be, as plans change." [Jean-Baptiste Queru, French Software Engineer working on Android Open-Source at Google]

"USB host should be enabled in a future update indeed. I believe JBQ answered this question in more details already." [Romain Guy,Android engineer]

[Q] Attaching USB headphone to Galaxy Nexus?

Hi
I've got Asus Travelite HS-1000W USB headphones [1] connected to my PC. They are USB connected, with the "normal" big USB. On the PC, I see the headphones (or rather, the USB dongle) as a USB soundcard.
Is it possible to connect and use this on the Galaxy Nexus, using some sort of USB adapter cable [2]?
Cheers,
Alexander

I tried plugging my USB headphones into my GN with an OTG cable with no luck, no sound through the headphones.
I have tested other USB devices and have had them work perfectly (keyboard, mouse, etc), but USB headphones did not work.
I am currently running stock 4.0.4 on my phone, so with a custom kernel you may be able to get this to work, but for my current setup it doesn't.
On a related note, this link might answer some of your questions.

I don't think you can use any USB headset with stock kernel. USB keyboard and mouse use the standard HID driver to connect which works universally. Linux driver support for audio devices (if any exists for the Travelite at all) needs to be enabled in the kernel for it to work.

Possible to get midi input to our phones? [YES]

Is there a way to get midi input recognized on our phones? On my pc I use the rock band 3 keytar connected via a midi to usb adapter and I can do midi playback.
Is there a way to do this on our phones via an otg cable?
EDIT: got it done! check my post below.

it works beautifully and way easier than I expected.
connected my otg cable and the phone said usb connector connected (since when is this a thing!?), plugged in the midi-usb adapter to the otg cable and right away it prompted me to open with the software I linked above and another midi software I had installed.
and bam, it was working. I messed around a bit to find the better settings for my keytar, but this thing works. over Bluetooth and with the headphone plug. there's a little bit of lag over Bluetooth but for my uses I wanted it straight to the speaker so i'm using the stereo cable. now I don't need a pc to get sound out of the keytar.
mark this as one more day i'm amazed at what my phone can do.
by the way, it functions as a synth using the software I mentioned above, so I can play harpsichord, organ, piano, etc. and the sound keeps on playing even with the screen off.
happy camper = me.

Looks like you had some luck... Wondering if you can help me?
I am trying to make my Android, Huawei p20 Pro, accept a MIDI signal via USB too.
I have an OTG adapter, and have tested 2 OTG adapters and 2 cords.
All work into my PC (even via an USB type-C to standard USB adaptor )
The issue seems to be that I cannot select the USB in type to be MIDI.
I have also experienced that on another Samsung Galaxy S10
I have tried opening developer settings and changing the setting "Disable USB Audio Routing" ON as per https://help.joytunes.com/en/articles/2636638-troubleshoot-midi-on-your-android-device
I have tried using it with 3 apps that accept MIDI.
Simple Piano by Joy Tunes, FlowKey and USB MIDI Monitor
Any ideas?

Fire tv to USB DAC, will it do what i want?

I want to know if Fire tv rooted would be perfect for my requirement. I plan to use this as audiophile audio streamer. It already have the most imp thing i want . A Ethernet port to connect to network (can't use wifi) , and USB port (to Audio output from it). Things i am not sure is and reason for asking help here is following.
- Can the USB port can be used to output Audio that would be connected to a DAC. This is main reason.
- Also can we switch audio from USB to HDMI ( case when i want to use FTV2 for watching movies)
- IS there a remote app that is available so that i dont have to turn on the TV for selecting songs.
- Once rooted i should be able to install any app , specifically USB Audio Player PRO.
Thanks

anyone?
I just did it...
I think it doesn't work or at least it's not that simple.
I have an audioquest dragonfly that works well with my LG G3 running stock marshmallow rom and my fire tablet.
I side loaded USB Audio Player PRO trial. It seems that you don't need root to make it work.
The DAC goes into error when I plug it and remains in error even after I start USB Audio Player Pro...
I think it's better to have another DAC with optical input.

You’re getting a display output with the cable on your laptop? Do you have to turn on any option for that? Or does it work when you simply connect the cable?
