you use a runnymede sense 3.5 rom on a desire.
hardware limitations come into play. a SENSE rom (especially a ported sense 3.5 rom) uses some amount of RAM. desire has only 512mb of RAM. so when you play game, both system itself and the game use some RAM. then you go to the messaging app and apparently, in order to launch the sms app ram has to be freed (either for the app or maybe to ensure system stability(?)) so it kills the game (which probably consumes a LOT of ram, so that nothing else could be killed at this specific situation).

Yeah pretty much what dzumagos said.. lol..
Sense are RAM eaters, so you may have enough for a few apps, but then as soon as you open some more, Androids automatic task manager kills off the ones you aren't using to make space.

I'd advice you to move to a ROM without Sense, much cleaner and more rapid response. "Silky Smooth"

You can also try this. Go to Settings>RCMix3D Tweaks>System setting(the 2nd tab)>Default Memory Configuration. I did that and my apps don't close itself often now.

Galaxy S gaming performance

I thought SGX540 that's superior than iphone4 would run new games without any lags but for new games such as 9mm and let's golf 3 i've face many stutter on those games. I'd like to ask others that you have problem like me or not ? or maybe next time i'd go back to ios or waiting ice cream sandwich. Those games are smooth in iphone4 but not in galaxy s that has superior GPU.
I didn't play to 9mm and I just tested Lets Golf3, but yeah... it's not strange to have some small lags sometimes.
If gaming on the phone is very important for you I suggest to use samsung roms and not cm7 or miui.
And yeah, maybe you should have buy an iPhone, Android still can beat iOS when it comes to games
im currently on JVT.firmware

I notice the lags too. I strongly believe that the lags are caused primarily by low ram. On Froyo, I never had lags in games, and they were all super smooth. But on gingerbread, after a few hours of usage, the ram drops below 100mb, and the games will lag. The games don't lag on a fresh boot. Hence, the problem is not with the gpu, but with the fact that 512mb of ram is just not enough for gingerbread. If you want to remove the lags in games as well as in the phone interface, I recommend that you flash a 2.2.1 rom. ZSJPK was one of the best roms I've ever used.
Yeah, sgx540 is better than the 535 use in iphone 4, but it's all about drivers and optimisations. And we can't deny that Apple is doing a wonderfull job with iOS.

indeed, i also think the lags are caused by lack of ram...
when you move the camera around in the game it sometimes hangs and when the textures are in RAM, you can continue playing without fps drops or lag
a tip before you start playing:
- root your phone and install "autostarts" to disable all crap which boots up with android
- reboot phone
- after booting go to task manager and cleanup ram
- go to settings => applications => active services and kill unnecessary processes. (for example, when you close the facebook app, it still keeps running as a service, sometimes almost using 50MB ram)
i reduced lag in 9mm alot with the method above...
Is there a custom rom that has a very low ram consumption? that would fix this issues

Yes, it's called V6 Supercharger Script. It's like a ROM, but it's actually just a script... and you can run that script on whatever ROM you want. What it does, is it lets you pick a number. That number decides how much free RAM you'll have. Then, like magic, you just have it.
There hasn't been a single piece of good advice in this thread...

I can't use supercharger with semaphore kernel, and CF bigmem settings (98 mb) doesn't solve the performance issue.

No, custom roms, even so called simple and bare ones, use more ram than stock roms. I recommend ZSJPK 2.2.1, which has about 180mb of ram on boot, and an average of 120-140mb or ram after two days' usage.

because android automatically closes apps when RAM is low and services always keep running in the background, whether you need them or not.
why would you let a service use your ram when you don't even need it? THAT is common sense.

I've rolled back to froyo and now without apps in the background i0ve about 140mb of ram used, and now 9mm goes smooth. I'm not moving from froyo any more.
Also, now the battery lasts in 6 hours of screen usage, and with jvt only 4 hours

Are they though? When I help someone out, I tell them correct information. If I don't know the correct information, I don't tell them anything. Why? Because incorrect information is worse than not helping at all. Few people in this thread have given remotely acceptable advice. No one needs to do a 3-step process, including rebooting your phone, just to play games; likewise, no one needs to downgrade to Froyo in order to game either.
I have Let's Golf! 3D installed currently, but I don't have the most recent revision of 9MM—although I have played it in the past. I have my phone's CPU and GPU overclocked, like I'm sure many of us do here, and I can play both without noticeable lag. I didn't have to reboot my phone to play them. I didn't have to uninstall apps to play them. I didn't have to flash an entirely new ROM to play them. And I certainly didn't need to stand on one leg with the phone above my head to play them.
Bad advice is just bad.

I posted what helped reducing lag in 9mm on my phone.
if you don't need the help i posted, that's too ****ing bad. the fact this topic was started shows people are facing the same problem with lack of usable ram memory for 9mm.
looks like you have some sort of magic phone with unlimited amounts of ram memory that never lags
the reason why i told him to reboot his phone is because ram usage is much less in most cases, right after booting up.
and btw, next time do some more effort instead of posting one line if my information is not correct

Why only 125MB left, what all apps are you running, I am running Stock kernel w/o any RAM tweaks and I generally have about 150 - 175Megs of Free RAM.
With this the Game runs pretty smooth and have seen no issues so far, just check the avail memory before starting game in Settings and stop some apps which u don't need and then run the game.

Root your phone then install titanium backup or systemCleanUp from maarket and delete widgets and system apps that you don't use
OR
Try this app Ram Managerand choose HARD GAMING and apply it then run NFS (needs root)
i had that problem to try to reinstall

[Q] Lag in Games with NXT 1.3 Rom on Xperia Play

Hello to everyone, i have installed a custom rom for my Xperia Play with Locked Bootloader, the Custom Rom is NXT 1.3 and its performance in games was excellent newly installed, but when i started to install my apps or restore my apps the performance felt. So i thought that was ocurred cause was filling up the internal memory, so I put most of the applications on the SD card and some go to the ROM, but the performance doesn't improve as well, i read and a i have try different things like install Ram Manager Pro to free more RAM in games, to Use Task killer for Tasks in Ejecution and i dont see an considerable change in its performance. So Can i do for play more smooth?
The another thing is the NXT 1.3 have Busybox and support for scripts Init.d but i try to use an option for swap but maybe my stock kernel dont support it and another option for max size aplication's data in Ram Manager Pro ask me for busybox as if i didnt installed it, and i don't know why.
Thank yo
PD: Sorry for my poor English cause my native language is Spanish. XD
you need to overclock your rom.
here is the link for download No-frills CPU Control (i use this one): https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wOSwiaXQuc2luZW8uYW5kcm9pZC5ub0ZyaWxsc0NQVSJd
After download that overclock it to: Max - 1,709 Ghz | Min - 249 Mhz | Governor - smartassV2 | I/Oscheduler - sio

A Question
But if i have locked bootloader and by that stock kernel i cant to overclock cause i cant change kernel. is there another option for improve the game experience with the NXT 1.3 Rom or another???
I know this might not help but could you tell me how good heavy 3d gaming was when you first installed the ROM. Did you play games like GTA:VC/GTA 3/Modern Combat 3/4 / Batman Dark Knight Rises etc without NO LAG or with minimal lag? Im on dixperia 2 and out of the 3 ROMs ive been on, its provided me with the good performance although it does slightly lag when doing heavy 3d gaming...
Nxt Light 1.3
I was experiencing the same issue. I am using the light version of the custom ROM, and it was blazing fast upon installation. Now that all of my games are installed, it is slightly slower than it was before, not very noticable though. If it helps, before playing a game, I use Es Task Manager to clear up about 200mb of memory so more is available for the games. My bootloader is locked as well. I wish there was a stable ICS on the Xperia Play. The ICS user interface, in my opinion, is much smoother than gingerbread.
Well i played games as Nova 3, Modern Combat 3, Pes 2012, Fifa 12, Asphalt 7 and i felt the rom really smooth but later when i had all my apps restored and time after working with the rom, definitely the was slower than rom newsly installed, now i have lag in all games :S. I have Advance task killer installed and when i'm going to play i free memory with the task killer, i used chainfire with Qualcomm and i free cache memory, but i never have 200 Mb free only when i reboot. Cause the services are restarted and the Ram memory is fill up really fast and i dont know why and what i can do :S
Dont use any task killer!!! This has been discuss throughout XDA in any android dev. All custom rom hav init.d support & they hav thier own set of minfrees'. Using task killer/manager will conflict with all the roms' tweak. Capish!!!

Many task managers are there just to run ads, they can eat up your battery, the programs will try to load in the free ram, it will kill it and over and over.
Install LBE (in my signature), it have the feature to prevent user and system programs from autostarting, although there might be other lighter apps that does this. Leave the ram management to android, just clear the ram before you launch a game.
You could try and watch what programs use up the most ram and see if you can replace it worth lighter apps. Launchers and widgets tends to, especially weather ones. I use holo launcher with light widgets only.

Dont do anything. Just use it as is. If it gets laggy, reboot, wipe cache/dalvik-cache. Solve. Custom rom hav init.d support. That alone is enough to giv u the perf u need. Any other ram management app will only eat ur intrnal mem & ram at the same time. Just find some init.d & build.prop tweak all over XDA. Its impossible to "NOT" find any. Cheerio.

There are many ways actualy.
Depends on what you need.
You can instal those bigmem kernels, like yoons or what was it called, it has 395mb ram, and the camera can still take pics.
Or u can instale the 423mb version, which hasnt got the camera working, but still, 423mb free.
And tick in the developer settings, then limit to 1 background process.
THat should make more RAM, or u can even tick the close the programm after u end using it.

RAM decreases severely over time

Hey all!
Somewhat new to the custom ROM and kernel scene. I'm currently running Lupus Stock GB/ICS Kernel v3, 480p and Krisdee's Hybrid ROM v1.0. My phone runs smoothly, even better than it did with the stock ROM.
However, I noticed if I leave the phone on overnight while charging, in the morning the RAM will almost be completely used up, causing several processes to close and try and re-open itself. I only found out what was going on when apps I tried to open end up closing themselves after a few seconds.
I can clear up the RAM by restarting the phone, but I'm actually not used to having to turn it off at all. Would there be a way to have it use better memory management and keep it at ~200 MB free while idling?
Your ram problem may be the cause of an application or widget having memory leaks. Try removing/uninstallng any useless applications and widgets that you may have constantly running in the background. Remove them one by one to see if you could find the application causing the problem.
Live wallpapers also tend to take up ram, so if possible disable them. You could also use a launcher which utilizes less ram such as "lightning launcher" or "zeam launcher".
NXT light rom is also a good candidate for more better ram.
And take a look at Esus task manager. Very useful in freeing up ram either manually or automatically.
This is normal in linux
I think adrenalin ( not the one in xplay xda) tweak can solve this
Try rebooting the phone

I'll take a look at that.
This is my current solution, however, it tends to happen again as time goes on and I essentially need to reboot at least once a day.

Well right now the best thing i could advise you to do is download an application that shows or records background process. The default app for showing processes on the XP sucks. It doesn't show all processes that are running. Chances are you may have thought that you closed off skype, but it still runs in the background. You really show take a look at a task manager like "Esus Task Manager" to determine what is eating your ram.
