I've tried installing two different wireless tethers and neither one wants to work. I'm rooted with stock rom. Any ideas/suggestions?

You sure its not working?? Its a adhoc connection and most tablets wont pick that up. My desktop sometimes wont either but to fix that i have to switch my wifi on the desktop off and on then it sees the connection

which rom are you using? i had that problem before when i was trying wifi tether hack apps but i download a rom that actually had the hotspot hack which allow to use the sprint hotspot and that worked like a charm.
i also suggest you to try using ( Hotspot hack ) posting on the development section.

I am having the same kind of problem; wifi tether does not work. I was on rooted stock rom, then Calkulin 1.5a. On the client side, I tried Ubuntu 11.10, Window XP, both detected the ad-hoc device, but just could not establish connection. I am using the hotspot hack, which work without issue.
I'm on add ROM with sprint hot spot and it works perfectly.

Exact same problem for me to. It work on my EVO and now I have a ET4G rooted. The wifi tether stable and beta do not work.
Any ideas?
Thre developer is aware and hopefully going to fix this for our phone.

I use wireless tether from the market and works great. I know on a past phone I had to create a folder on my SD card called android.tether with a bin file in it. I don't know if that is why mine works or not.

Anyone know what happened I switched from dj29 today I was running the hotspot all the time using it for wireless routing. Once I odined the dk17 modem(specifically the modem.bin) and quantum1.5 rom the hotspot no longer would activate without shutting off data. Any ideas why.

Use Wireless Tether for Root Users from the market in the meantime. It's free and works good for me.

No and if someone was they would have posted something. Honestly this looks like an isolated problem. I suggest trying wireless tether like mentioned above or try reflashing the rom.

i dont think this is an isolated problem, i have the same issue that the sprint hotspot shuts off data in the DK17 rom as many others do. I do believe in the Viper rom is has been fixed. hopefully someone will port that fix over to the other froyo roms we are using.

Are you talking about mobileAP or the hotspot app? I believe those are two separate things, someone correct me if I'm wrong. But if that's the case that maybe why people don't have an answer for you.

Not sure if this was resolved, but thought I would chime in since I had the same problem with Nebula ROM 1.0.6 (running DK17). I just got a Xoom wifi and was planning on being able to go full mobile via my Epic 4G but discovered that the Wifi hotspot isn't working on my ROM (I love everything else about it and wanted to keep it). Unfortunately the current version of wifi tether from the market failed also.
I downloaded this version of wifi tether, which supports Infrastructure Mode (the XOOM won't do Ad-Hoc yet, so I need this). Hope this helps someone...it works great for me with the new Xoom and Nebula ROM on DK17.

Try enabling encryption, access control, and routing fix. That's what worked for me... Also I used an older version... I think I'm running 3.1 beta7... Oh and try reinstalling the binaries.

There are several quirks to it. One thing you might try is making sure the phone screen is on when trying to connect. On mine if it goes out before its connected, it won't work...

Driver loading issues....
I'm having some loading trouble with WiFi Tether, hoping y'all can help out instead of me making a new thread. I'm rooted without CWM running the stock EK02 rom.
When I launch WiFI Tether it's granted SU but fails to load corretly. This is what I get from the log:
Loading WiFi driver .......FAILED
Stopping Driver.............DONE
Loading WiFi firmware....DONE
Starting Driver..............DONE
Configuring Softap.........FAILED
Starting softap..............FAILED
Activating WiFi interface.FAILED

I never got this to work on rooted-Stock EL29, so I went to a custom ROM with a hack for wifi tethering (Calkulin's).
If you watch this video, he explains some of the differences and things you can do regarding wifi tethering.

The built in native Sprint hotspot app is the best, and a lot of custom ROM's include the hack for that which allows you to use that app for free. The is also a mod for it for those with a stock/rooted phone I believe.

For some reason on GB I am unable to download roms on my phone but I can have a functioning tether. But on ics its the total opposite. I have no Internet at home due to lack of funds but my girlfriend want to do her usual Facebook browsing on the computer.
Is there any wifi tether apps that you would suggest or is there an ics rom that I may have overlooked that has it working?

Sprint Hotspot works flawlessly on the Blu Kuban ICS rom. Haven't had it working on any others yet.
Seems to me the answer is to fix your gb roms. My issue with downloads on gb roms has been one of two things ; need to download "download all" app from market or move/delete files from download folder to make room.

On ics there is wifi tether for root users, get from market. Just set device to galaxy nexus cdma and it works great for 4g tether.
On gb foxfi works well

Is there actually a Wi-Fi tether app that works for our phone? I've tried Wi-Fi tether from the market, and other devices will connect to my SSID and "tether", but it will basically be a worthless connection because I won't be able to surf at all from the tethered connection.
I'm trying to connect my Nexus 10 tablet since I get great LTE signal here in Dallas where I live, but I can't make full use of it since no tether app works properly with our phone...any help is appreciated!!

Lol, dude...I have been on XDA for more than ten seconds. I know how to search. I've found and already looked through that thread. There is no real answer there other than what I already mentioned about changing a lot of settings for a possible solution...which still didn't work when I tried.
I'm not looking for some smart assed answer about searching because I already have...extensively. I'm looking for someone who might have found an app which actually WORKS.

I've tried that...read my original post. That app will "tether" but the device that connects won't download anything. Basically making it worthless.

Settle down tiger. Try a reboot. See if it works. Its been working for a few of us since zvb dropped. You might have to use Trevor's WiFi tether. And i did read your post. That's why I'm answering.

Here's the settings I used to make Wifi tether from the Playstore to work. Remeber either WIFI or the Wifi tether per reboot.
1.Change device profile to - Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
2.Setup method - Auto
3.Enable wifi-encryption
4. I changed SSID and my Passphrase
That's it. It's worked for stock JB and Imperium. Haven't tried it on Lifeless yet.

Is whatever you're trying to tether set to auto? Also, Wi-Fi cannot turn on at all after a reboot if you're on zvb. Try it on other things also to see if its the app, or whatever you're trying to tether.
Edit. Try going to settings, enable access control.

When I had this problem (at&t model but probably the same issue), I had to select a different lan in the wifi tether settings. Either the arp cache on the tethered device still had old entries (since the default network is the same as my wireless network that my device had just been connected to), or it's just that wifi tether applies the wrong netmask. Right now I'm using the setting "10.10.3.0/24" which works, but in reality it's assigning a 255.0.0.0 (/8) netmask to the interface!
So I've tried 2 different aosp roms, MiBox 1.20 and IllusionRom, and I can't seem to get wifi tethering to work on either rom. It works just fine for me on touchwiz. I tried using the hotspot built into the rom and ive tried treve mod wifi tether app and neither work.. Does anyone know how to get it to work? Thanks.

If I remember correctly, it states in the OP of both of these that this is an issue. It is an issues with most AOSP ROMs.

WiFi tether works fine if you edit build.prop with for example ROM toolbox from market and edit it and add
ro.ril.transmitpower=true
Then save and reboot and built in WiFi tether should be working fine...
If your build.prop doesn't have that line to add then add it and you should have it working right...

Have you tried yet adding
ro.ril.transmitpower=true
To your build.prop and check if the build in tether hotspot works?
Works fine for me and I always add that to get it working...I forgot were I got it from but it works

I've been trying to get wifi tether working with no luck so far.
I tried adding the ro.ril.transmitpower=true
I tried downloading a beta build of the wifi tether app (3.2 pre2)
I tried it with mms clamping and routing fix on and off.
The best i can get is i see the hotspot show up on the available networks, but when i try to connect it either gets as far as getting an IP address and then just keeps re-trying that (the app shows a device connected) or if i have encryption enabled, it doesn't seem to get past authenticating.
Some of the combinations i tried the network doesn't even show up under the list of available networks.
Can anyone offer some advice on how to get the wifi tether working? I'm using a sprint evo 4lte, with the viper rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2124391

I'm not quiet ready yet to try totall resetting the phone and installing a new rom. I'm still hoping there's something i can tweak somewhere to get this working without having to go that far.
