Alright guys not trying to start another "I heard" thread but I read some upsetting news today.....it seems the community is going to begin to dwindle.....maybe not for us specifically but more for some of the newer phone models... I took some interest in the Droid bionic today and so I decided to go look at the thread for it.....under the general topic there was a discussion about Verizon beginning to crack down on root users. This is due mainly to the theft of services (WiFi tether). This crack down will mean Verizon completely locking down the bootloader and making phones unrootable. Theyre even going as far as to back this up with network locks. If your new device isn't verified on there network with an unrooted Rom, they will potentially lock down your service so you can't use your phone for anything essentially. Now as of right now it appears that they are focused mainly on new devices and they aren't so worried with us. I can completely understand why they would want to stop the theft of this service but at the same time this news comes as a bummer. How long will it be until Verizon locks down root altogether? And this isn't even just Verizon but rather a joint venture across multiple carriers. I don't know how to link but go look it up if youre interested guys. It's under Droid bionic general. I don't know how to take this information....but anyways let's get some input rolling here. What do you guys think about this? And better yet anyone think its gonna affect our devices at some point?

Hey man, I can honestly say that I think this is complete bull! Haha. Why would they take away the boot loader?? Thats aa main trouble shoot tool in its self, and if this does happen. I highly doubt that it would stop root. We would be able to get past it.

This is a rumor from ONE source. People have been getting all upset over this but until anything actually happens, it's just that. A rumor.
Besides, if Verizon is worried about people tethering for free, it would make more sense to charge for data on a tiered level like they're probably going to start doing anyway.

Am I saying that this is impossible? No. But as intelligent adults, should we not demand a higher burden of proof than vague references to "multiple channels"? If there really are multiple channels that can confirm this vast conspiracy, why hasn't it broken as a reputable news story anywhere? One dude cracked the case, but no one else can corroborate it or cite anything?

P.S. - I have heard from multiple sources that XDA is going to start tracking members by injecting code into any attachment that is placed on this forum. I've confirmed it through multiple channels. No, I can't be any more specific than that: I hope you understand. After all, this is top secret information... I can't just go tossing it around. It's a vast conspiracy, but they've managed to keep it completely bottled up.

I don't necesarilly believe it will happen but is it plausible? yes....You can't deny that major carriers and development teams have more knowledge, experience, and capability then ANY developer on xda. Look at the past. Apple actually brought out a lawsuit trying to keep people from jailbreaking devices. So while we may all sit around and laugh at the idea and while it is just a bunch of hear say at this point, it is definitely plausible. And i do agree that it may just be easier to do tiered data plans, but then that kind of screws over verizon's customers who actually pay for tether. So you can kind of understand why they wouldn't want to continue to move on that route. Both options are viable and neither of them appears to be any sort of threat right now. As stated above, right now it's just a bunch of threads linking back to other threads linking back to other threads. And I don't know how much there is to believe about it but none the less it definitely could happen.... But hopefully nothing will happen....I mean come on manufacturers hardly keep their devices up to date...2.3 has already been dropped on how many devices and we're still waiting for it. People are on to sense 3.0 and we still have 1.0 on our stock rom. If they decide to kill the independent dev community then they better start dropping crazy updates with extremely customizable roms. It just seems like too much work that would ultimately end in manufacturers and providers losing money. Sooo ya. probs not gonna happen
If people didnt abuse tether, it wouldnt be an issue. So much free wifi, i cant think of last time i tethered. I also actually pay for internet at hone, yet i know several who tether for home internet.

It's not a flame, it's just the truth... There really is not a whole lot to be concerned about. It's out of our control so whatever happens happens, we'll have to deal with it when it shows up, IF it shows up. But why be so concerned about it?
Having said that, as far as rooting goes, they SHOULD embrace developers and allow us to use our roms and stuff legally... but I think that there is stuff set in writing and signatures that are still in effect for the time being. I see them never allowing us to root, but compromising by letting us set our own defaults and not having to use their proprietary carrier BS eventually. Whatever we make our phones into (right now) creates a market, and where there's a market there's money. We'll either have the perfect phone or the option to make the perfect phone, just like we can buy the perfect PC or make the perfect PC. Well, at least as far as software goes.
I personally believe we'll ultimately get what we want to the point where rooting is useless as far as ordinary everyday users go. But right now we don't know what this whole smartphone craze is or what its gonna be when it finally plateaus, and neither do the manufacturers & carriers so they can't exactly crack whips on our backs for doing all of this yet.
Besides, the hackers that make these roms make the phones better. They turn us into brand and carrier loyalists. The Optimus, Galaxy S, Xperia, HTC & Droids all have followings for different reasons, and the developers are the most rabid and loyal of them all. They might not NEED us, but we're still pretty freaking important.

Okay I'm going to be as nice as I can about this. It's not true. We've had so many threads about this the threads are starting to scare people. Please stop. I don't mean to be rude to you. There is not on piece of solid evidence and I've talked to soooo many people it's not even funny. Don't buy it.
I'm rooted and I have wireless tether. However, there are apps in the market (Easy Tether and PDANet, for example) that do the same thing as wireless tether, but use a USB cable and work on unrooted phones, so the argument that VZW is cracking down on rooted users due to wireless tether isn't valid. I use WT every now and then if I need to connect my laptop for work reasons when I am at a customers location. If VZW feels the need to lock my phone, well, it IS their network and they have that right. I rooted my phone to get rid of the software that was bogging my phone down.

I don't know if this topic has been bandied about on this forum. I've searched quite a bit and I haven't found anything. Is there any reason why MS has not released BT PAN on our stacks? I know the carriers have the ultimate say on methods used for tethering but not even the factory unlocked models have this wonderful feature. Wi-Fi tethering is nice and all, but it drains batteries like nobody's business, and if you're tethering to a tablet now you have two batteries dying a quick death. One of my favorite features of Windows Mobile after version 5 aku 3 was the internet sharing through either USB or BT. The speeds over BT were the same as any Wi-Fi tethering since it is the phone's same 3G signal anyway. Bluetooth tethering consumes a lot less power than Wi-Fi and with the PAN profile we also get the benefit of file transfer. ARGH!!!!! I hate having to carry an old POS WM6.5 device in my bag for the oft times I need to jack up my laptop when I'm out in the field. If anybody with any kind of influence with MS is reading, can you also throw in the MAP profile while you're at it? Please? Pretty please? With sugar......

Dude, come on. It is widely accepted that a BT radio consumes less power than a Wi-Fi radio. No, I don't have the back-up because it is widely accepted as much as anything else. Do you also need proof if someone tells you the speed of light is approximately 186,000 fps? You must also be one of those idiots that want to see Obama's birth certificate. BT PAN is a very useful profile and I'm not the only one who would prefer to have it. Search around other platforms and you'll see for yourself, or do you want me to do the work for you as well? Would you like links or do you prefer pictures so you don't have to actually read.

It's cool, sitizenx posted my partial post in big red bold letters and I realized my mistake and I owned up to it and clarified. I'm not perfect, only my teacher is (Jesus). I can't walk on water or turn water into wine, but I've been known to turn Mad Dog (MD 20/20 for the uninformed) into a chunky liquid, but that's another story.

not yet but I only got it for 4 wks, supposedly it can take around 6-8wks before the problems become apparent
I have two Tegra HOXs. Neither has the WiFi issue (yet?).
One I've had since May 2. The other since June 1. The original phone does have f***ed GPS though.

Keep in mind that with 1K votes 70% of people deem their device as "perfect." For that to be true I'd assume working Wi-Fi was part of their judging criteria. A lot of people have stopped participating in the forum because of all the emotionalism so I'd imagine this poll will be skewed toward the complainers. I've stopped contributing because it gets tedious slogging through all the "OMG! can you believe it!" posts that repeat incessantly driven by the vocal minority.
After a month of having no problems at all with my hox the wifi signal got worser by the day. I can only get a proper signal by squeezing it
HTC is picking it up for repairs tomorrow
Mine is a HT23 with CID: HTC__001 so it's the generic unbranded model. It was perfect until about a week ago, when I got the sudden overheating problem, since then the WiFi is fooked. Across my apartment where I used to have full signal (obviously), now only the bottom dot is lit up on the signal meter and while it doesn't drop the connection, it's noticeably slower than before. Of course the 'grip' works, the signal does improve a lot while I'm squeezing the screen.
Not a happy camper let me tell y'all.
I could send it back for repair, but now that the problem is acknowledged there will be thousands of devices sent back and it will be weeks (if not months) before I get it back which I'm not at all happy with and not willing to accept. (Not to mention it'll come back with the newest firmware, and I was deliberately holding off the updates until the S-OFF guys say it's safe to upgrade, I'm still on 1.26 with hboot 0.43.) If they said it's one week I'd probably say OK but looking at 2-3 or more, I think I'll just open it up and fix it myself.
I'll stop short of saying 'this is my last HTC' or things like that, but after spending 2 years with the Desire absolutely problem free, the apparent shortcomings of quality control on the HOX did get me thinking.
Having the problem, too.. Will send it in few days to HTC Repair Center...

I wonder how many of those who said "no defect" early on in their ownership of the phone would vote the same way today.
I said "no defects" in that particular poll, but then after voting learned my GPS had gone bad (or was bad all along and hadn't noticed it). I'd go back and change my answer, but it won't let me.
That said, I agree, most of the folks without issues stay away from forums, so you always get a bit of bias towards the negative in these types of discussion.
Fault developed last week on my Tegra 3 One X in the UK. Phone being sent for repair.
I use wifi of my One X (ht23) most of the day for two months and I never had any problem. Fast and stable.

Totally agree... I also voted "no defect"... Ive had a replacement and my second HOX is at repair as we speak "WiFi" so +1 id also go back and change my answer!
Mine's being sent back this week, Tegra 3 One X, has been fine in first month of ownership (it's a replacement itself anyway) but the wifi has been really crappy for the last couple of weeks. Have installed a new dual band router and moved it twice trying to improve the reception upstairs in my house thinking the problem was there, ha, foo', it's the One.
I've got no pirated software or root stuff on my device, it's stock, but am not looking forward to setting it all up again. Do they wipe it or just threaten that to exclude modders from warranty repairs?
These kind of polls aren't representative and thereby useless. First of all, XDA members are way more tech savvy than the average customer, meaning that the slightest defect or imperfection gets noticed, resulting in a more than average number of defects or problems. Second and more important, if you have this problem and you notice it, you go searching online and you end up in on of these threads. There you click on the poll and the results of the poll are completely overestimating the problem, because people who don't have these problems are far less likely to vote or to even visit these forums and topics.
So to say it again: these kind of polls are useless!

If they're useless, then why do you bother even opening the thread, let alone taking the time to lecture people on why they're useless?
Sure, these polls are skewed, but they help someone determine if it's "just me" or a commonly shared problem. That's useful information for people, even if the actual percentage of defects is in the general population is wrong.
Let the people who want to do these polls have their fun. How does it harm you or anyone else?

Judging by the number of topics and posts about the WiFi problem, people can already find out that they're not alone with their problem. I know how frustrating that can be, I had to send my phone back for repair twice. But these kind of topics serve little purpose.

And exactly what purpose do your multiple posts saying these topics serve little purpose serve? Do you really think they're going to get people to stop? If they're out of line, let the moderators handle it.
Again, if you think they're pointless, skip 'em, ignore 'em, move on...
If you don't like seeing them in the thread listings, head over to the xda general section and chime in on my ages old thread suggesting that we be allowed to "ignore thread" the same way can "ignore user".

I know Verizon, Sharp, and Microsoft want us to think Kin Two is dead. I've been browsing these forums for a while. Remarkable efforts on your parts..
I'm an electronics guy by hobby. Nothing serious. My Kin ONE(m) suffered the rebooting modem problem and never recovered. I tore it apart. I accidently killed the power supply section...boohoo, but I'm wondering what exactly the hardware limitation was that we couldn't get much to happen between Kin and PC. I heard someone said there was some sort of chip that blocked any 3rd party communication.
I have no actual electronics education but I've been teaching myself for a couple of years. None of these devices are really "locked" I don't think. I don't think a USB programming interface will do the trick. I don't think they were programmed via USB in the factory. I'm looking at the iFixit Kin TWO teardown photos and I'm trying to find an ICSP header. I see two places on the board where there are 4 contacts in a row. These potentially could be SPI or JTAG headers. I'm not a programmer by nature, though I can do some, but I think using those headers would give you direct access to processor/memory. I'm not sure what is the restricting agent right now, but that's as hardwired as you can get.

Go in General Chat or in Microcontrollers. The people in Microcontrollers will have a better programming background but everyone goes in the General Chat so either one.
I think they will really be able to help. They aren't really hackers, but a hell of a lot of knowledge there. The forum owner is an electrical engineer. There is atleast 5 other EEs that frequently post of the forums and they don't treat anyone bad. Tons of really smart people and it's a very active forum. Just sell it to them and you'll have 20 posts on your thread in one evening.
If you guys are still interested, I am still interested in doing something with this phone.
On another note, there's no way to get Kin Two(m) software onto a Kin Two phone is there? I don't think so, but it gets rather annoying having to skip the setup everytime I turn it on etc.

These potentially could be SPI or JTAG headers. I'm not a programmer by nature, though I can do some, but I think using those headers would give you direct access to processor/memory. I'm not sure what is the restricting agent right now, but that's as hardwired as you can get.

I dont think this can help us very much considering were having problems with software hacking not hardware. I dont think they can help us, but mabye we should have Johnkussack look into this. Hes kinda our lead if you will.

You have clearly never used a USB jug to un brick a phone, got s off on a HTC vivid or used a factory data cable on a Droid RAZR. They all use hardware too access our bypass software. So this good work out couldn't but there may be something here. Obviously plugging it into the computer and doing the same thing over and over isn't though.

i understand the concept started in 2017, but for longevity and support, it really should have started with full Treble support.
maybe a few more rounds of hardware design refinement first (like proper usb-c compatibility and complete standard mobile feature set, maybe camera that can swivel front to back if they only put in one, and some way to use the touchscreen without opening the clamshell like maybe i dunno a slider style instead?)
and software refinement (like not including the MTKlogger spyware the FTC scolded BLU and ADUPS about earlier this month) but they get awesome points for their releasing source codes so quickly unlike the usual suspects, and even more bonus points for the linux dual boot as well.
this is all based on the reviews. (edit: and forum posts by users at oesf)
anyway, i'm looking forward to the next gen version of this to replace my CM KK Relay slider finally.

i've already looked through many pictures, read through multiple reviews across the web, read forum posts (here and oesf which has a running list of known issues) from people who have used the product.
basic science: "does it replicate? yes".
anyone that has done sufficient research on a topic will find that others have already performed the same studies and reached the same conclusions, so no need to repeat the process as it has already been verified.
anyway, back to waiting for the next gen version with the first round awkwardness worked out.
meanwhile, the "gpd win 2" that kept getting mentioned in comparison (though not android mobile device) seems kinda interesting. hopefully a "gemini 2" is a similarly notable improvement compared to the first as i'm much more a fan of Sliderrrsss.

Boy, you sure are a...douche
The GPD Pocket and Win2 are complete crap compared to the Gemini. I couldn't even browse the internet without major slowdowns and stuttering on the Pocket. The CPU is simply too underpowered for anything legitimate.
You're the expert though, keep holding out for the next gen sweetheart.

y u mad bro? insert actually applicable saying about insults being the refuge of etc.
it is generally considered common for most tech to not get things perfect on the first iteration, instead pushing alpha or beta quality something out the door that people can see, to get more money, research, field testing, and do it better the next time.
(this is why mission critical businesses tend towards the "i'll wait for sp1 to come out before upgrading the OS" mindset exists)
so if you were personally involved in the production of the device and decided to take offense, then i'm super sorry if your feelings got hurt. but you seem to be in a grumpy mood so i hope you have a good rest of your day though :fingers-crossed:
anyway, i'm gonna point the Relay users to keep an eye on this company, since they look likely to produce a promising mobile replacement (unlike the "gpd win 2", which is the only gpd device i mentioned, as i already stated is not a comparable mobile product, like apples to oranges, laptops to mobiles lolz).
