1male-2female Splitter - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Does no1 else see the need in someone producing a 1male -2female splitter for our phone considering we do not have a seperate hdmi connection. It would be great to use the otg cable along with hdmi. So we can use keyboard and mouse hookup to the tv etc.... Ive looked all over the internet for one and have not come across one yet. So if anyone is capable of making one i will be your first customer. lol

if you notice, on those MHL to HDMI connectors, they all provide a spare microUSB port in the adapter, so that you can continue to hook up more stuff to your phone, and charger your phone

the spare port is for a micro USB power input. the video out display will not work if it isnt plugged in, at least mine won't. Bluetooth controller maybe?

thanks for the replies
I guess i will have either pay someone to make one or wait to see if there will be a demand for it. Thanks again for the replies

Lapdock HDMI

I can confirm that the lapdock does indeed work as a hdmi monitor and usb mouse / keyboard, I had some spare time and tried it out.
*update*
I just spliced a USB A to a micro USB female, works great on my ps3. I just connected USB Rx Tx and ground, Don't bother connecting USB +5vdc red as it sends power up stream and may damage whatever your connecting it to.
here's a video of it in action.

It'd be awesome if you could post some pictures, such as a game console or camera
So far I just connected it to my laptop by holding it. I have an adapter I bought off dealextreme that converts micro female hdmi to full size hdmi. I had to file the female side down a bit but nothing more. If I can find my hdmi genderbender then I'll post it with my xbox360 or ps3. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/hdmi-male-to-micro-hdmi-female-adapter-converter-81206
that is awesome, a female micro hdmi to female hdmi cable is impossible to find I'm sure
What kind of usb slicing is involved?

What are you using the USB for for end-use? USB hub for the ps3?

The lapdock keyboard and touchpad work just like a normal USB keyboard and mouse. I just used a ps3 as a good proof of concept. But it'll work on anything else that has HDMI / DVI and USB. I'm going to use mine as a cheap rack controller with a KVM.
@callen81, I see there are 2 HDMI to micro HDMI connectors on dealextreme. The one you've posted is $5, and the other one is $4.10. The cheaper one also has a smaller form factor. Maybe it'll fix without any modifications. Anyway, I just wanna ask is there any reason why you've decided to purchase the expensive one? Thanks!
Here is the link to the cheaper one.

Awesome find callen81!
If I get a "Gold Plated HDMI Female to HDMI Female Adapter/Converter" (search on dealextreme) coupled with the HDMI Male to Micro HDMI Female Adapter, I should be good to go right?
@callen81: Out of curiosity do you happen to have Rock Band 2 with a Rock Band 2 Guitar? If so, I'd love for you to run the auto-calibration test on the Laptop monitor and let us know what the Video Response Time is (aka input lag). If it's under 16.6ms, then it is considered sub 1 frame lag. If you don't have this, I'll do this test myself when I get my Laptop monitor up and running and report back!

I don't have Rock Band, that HDMI micro female to HDMI male looks identical to the one I have. Looks just to be cheaper? As well I just used a hdmi female to female gender bender for a wall plate and it seems to have worked fine. A HDMI extension cable would probably be ideal.
Where did you get the female micro usb as well? FRom video it looks like the hdmi adapter takes up almost all the room so I am just wondering how hard is it to fit them plugged in at same time
Is there anyway to make an extender (female to male) for both the HDMI and USB connections? I would love to be able to use my atrix as a webcam for skype or goggle talk since the screen blocks the view of the phone when the lapdock screen is up.

I had to file both the hdmi and micro usb female plugs down a bit, far as an extension cable for the atrix itself it wouldn't work as more then usb data is sent though the usb plug.

Someone should connect this to a Mac Mini and you would have your very own PAAH (Portable as Hell Hackintosh)

Micro usb splitter?

Hi i wonder where i can buy a microusb splitter for my phone so that i can use, both usb keyboard and hdmi cable together. I just tried keyboard+mouse using a usb hub, and it worked fine...
does it even exist?
Sorry, but this can't work. When the phone is putting out HDMI, the USB can't be used as it takes the same connector pins. You can do what you want with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, but sorry, not with wired.
try to find the smallest hub there is, that's the closest you will get to a usb splitter that works. Just splitting will never work, the signals have to be divided with some intelligence.
/edit... never mind didn't read the MHL/HDMI part... don't think that will work
I am also intrested in this topic. I want to plug in the HDMI cable and s remote controler. I want to use my phone as a media center.

You flat out can't; it is a limitation of the more common MHL implementation, and the Galaxy Nexus uses this MHL implementation.
Samsung had to use a new kind of MHL connection for the Galaxy S 3 to make this exact scenario possible.
*edit* You can plug in an HDMI cable and use a bluetooth remote, though, if that might work for your needs.

MHL + OTG possible?

As in title, is it possible to use MHL with OTG?
I mean like that : Phone->MHL->OTG, MHL need power to work from what I know, so what about mircoUSB Y cable-> MHL + OTG?
Negative friend. It does not work. Even if you have the connecters, the micro USB can only act as one or the the other at a time.
Thats the ONLY reason I bought an apple magic trackpad (the only bluetooth peripheral with pinch to zoom, yada yada), to control gnex when its pushing mhl to tv. See living digitally for a demo.
But does the device charge, when connected to MHL adapter then?
Yes, the MHL adapter needs to be plugged into a microUSB to function, it does power the phone. And if you are only pushing HDMI out, it should charge.
I have a fast charge ROM&kernel, so it will charge even if using hdmi, bluetooth, dowloading torrents....
Thank you, I just asked, as I will soon get the device, for now I only ordered the extended battery, and desktop dock. Not really want to use the usb port too much, also I dont know if I will need hdmi, btw, the hdmi dock have a usb port, but the dock not mirror the screen, only good for videos, and photos, so maybe it can use otg? I'm not sure, if the usb port only for charging, but again, it not use hdmi all the time, also I guess no good for games, mhl sucks guys, why couldnt they use separate hdmi, like motorola?
Not 100% sure, but I think the USB in the dock is only for charging, check out the reviews.
As for single port, I believe the Gnex, being google's vision for the fututre, is ahead of its time. Its supposed to be all wireless connections soon. Google Smart TV, bluetooth 3 & 4, WiDi, NFC.... see the trend. I'm suprised there are fewer bluetooth peripherals.
I would look at the next motorola phones to see where the future is going...

OTG+MHL? Maybe (anyone taken an MHL adapter (or 11pin to 5pin converter) apart yet?)

so, anyone taken apart an MHL adapter yet?
i have a sneaking suspicion, that the move to an 11 pin is what will allow BOTH OTG, and MHL at the same time, but i could be wrong.
look inside your USB port on the bottom of the S3...
whatya see?
the normal 5 pins on the USB part.. but what is that in back wall? THE OTHER 6 PINS!
yep, that is why you cannot plug the MHL adapter into a hub or anything.. there is 6 pins are missing.
Now, i am wondering:
has anyone taken it apart to see if the 6 pins are used alone, or if it uses the the USB also?
if it uses only the 6 pins for MHL-ness, then it should more than possible to make an OTG/MHL adapter/dock.
more thought says, if my theory is right, an 11 pin to 5 pin conveter may be the key.. and an otg can be spliced in to give 2 outputs: MHL in one (using an s2 MHL adapter) and OTG in the other.....
anyone wanna tear their adapter up? or are you guys gonna make me spend some money?
I ran across this post looking to see if anyone has done this yet. I am going to try to grab the 5 to 11 tomorrow and tear it apart (since it's the cheaper adapter). My plan was to rip it apart and if the original 5 pins are available, splice just as you mentioned.
I can't find a decent picture of the microUSB plug to see if all pins are there.
Also I found this:
http://homixtech.en.alibaba.com/pro...Galaxy_S3_11pin_To_Micro_USB_5pin_Gender.html
Which makes me think 11 pin microUSB plugs that work are available out there somewhere.

So, did you do this experiment? Has anybody found a way to get access to all of the pins and make OTG work with MHL?
I've been waiting for two months for an answer about this. I'm glad someone started a thread. I kind of have this hesitation to start new threads.
I would love it if this could be integrated with the seidio active dock.

meh, I think that is wrong. many people have done exactly what it says you can do, and it doesn't work.
Makes me wonder if the boys at Samsung made a press mistake. If indeed you can't use both with the correct cable, then why make a port with 11 pins? Seems a waste of resources to me.

I have never seen anything from samsung saying that MHL and OTG was possible.. just speculation in websites.
It better be possible because if not all Samsung's managed to do is make us buy hugely overpriced new MHL cables when they could have kept the old type, but I guess Samsung's made some decent money giving people no option but to buy £30 MHL cables.
I hope Monoprice really is working on a cable. 35-40 USD is more than I want to pay, especially if I get a couple and/or an HDMI dock.

Someone needs to find the resistor values first so the phone can use both simultaneously if it's even possible that is.

that would be key. I have sent out messages to people that may know, or may be able to find out, but i have not had success.
heck, If it can be done in the terminal (turning on items) i can make a shortcut that would do it.. but i have had no success with that either.
It's not possible I think.
You can use an MHL enabled tv wich powers MHL, (so you don't need the adapter) but how do you want to split that?
You can split the cables from the samsung adapter, so you have the MHL ones(6) and the usb ones(5).
But what then?
You need to connect the MHL ones to an hdmi cable, and connect it with an MHL enabled tv. And the usb ones to an usb port for OTG.
But will that even work with this S3?, because it is designed to get power from your charger via the extra usb port on the adapter.
Maybe it only works with the adapter, and not even with an MHl enabled tv...
I think somebody needs to connect the S3 to an MHL enabled tv, if that works you can modify the adapter and use the usb as OTG.

I found (and shared) the MHL value, and we already know the OTG value.. but it only seems logical there is ANOTHER value to activate both at the same time. we are postulating, the the reasoning behind the 11 pin, is to allow both. If adding just an OTG cable turned on MHL too, it would cause issues without an MHL connection. and the same with MHL activating OTG, without an OTG device connected. like i said, this is postulation at the moment, but there SHOULD be a thrid value to enable both at the same time. that value would be used by a future peice of hardware that does a whole "PC MODE".
and if it does not exist, it CAN be done, we just need more "stuff" a way to enable a special switch if you will.
some people are saying you can connect straight to an MHL enabled TV, but that has not been done yet (and since there are no 11 pin MHL cables, that are not adapters, it seem unlikell that anyone will until said cable exists. the S3 cannot send MHL signal over the usb part, it has to be either the extra 6 pins, or with the 11 to 5 pin adapter.)
essentially, the pins are there, and with some special software, or a hidden resistor value as to yet, unfound, and some custom hardware (as of now NOTHING 11 pin, has 11 pins in it) it SHOULD be possible.
but there is nothing that has been found (hardware wise) that is even modifyable to work.... yet.
What I don't understand, why does MHL only work with the power connected?
They could easily make an MHL cable with the 11 pin, and hdmi. That should work for only MHL.
Only no go I can think is that MHL drains your battery because of always having your screen on, and the MHL output.
So they decided to use the adapter with power, otherwise you can't use MHL feature very long before your battery is empty
I think inside the adapter they only use the pins for giving power, and not the full 5 pin support for OTG, and therefore OTG doesn't work when you want to connect something.
Inside the ROM they have maybe build in something that MHL will only work when power is connected.
Maybe the solution is very simple, modify the adapter so full 5 pins are connected.

MHL and OTG at the same time: Maybe we're going about it wrong?

I've read through most of the postings about the GS3 and MHL/OTG going at the same time. I've been doing a lot of thinking and I'd like to know exactly what those MHL enable samsung TVs do to the HDMI standard that allow it to power the MHL adapter and phone. I've done a lot of power injection on ethernet and it doesn't scare me in the least...
what I'm getting at, I suppose, is that if the HDMI port is supplying the required juice, we can use the official GS3 MHL adapter for OTG and HDMI at the same time correct? if so, can we kludge an hdmi power injector right in front of the adapter, between the HDMI cable and the HDMI port on the MHL adapter? that $60 atrix dock is calling my name, but only if we can get it to work correctly.
I'm not having much luck finding out more about those mhl enabled TVs. Anyone happen to own one that has a multimeter?

as was figured out in another thread:
there multiple things making both not work at the same time:
1. as has been seen so far, none of the MHL adapters connect to the data pins on the usb of the phone (they do not have those 2 pins wired to anything, so no data can pass, they are all using the extra 6 pins for the MHL)
2. the 4th pin in the USB switches between different modes, it needs to be directly connected to ground for OTG, but it need a 1k resistor for MHL.. that means the phone will only switch one on, or the other.
3. the only possibility is: a fully rewired MHL adapter, with a custom resistor value wired in, and a special Kernel or ROM that would turn both on when it sees that special resistor.
we need hardware and software that do not exist for it work.
hi guys. i was able to make usb otg and mhl work together just like smart dock.
