Clockwork Recovery for the Continuum

THIS HAS NOT BEEN TESTED!!! USE AT YOUR OWN PERIL!!! Update: So far i have it working for DJ20 users. Still fighting it with some DL17 users. Make Odin files first!!!
Hey folks,
Jt1134 (awesome Samsung Fascinate dev) and I were discussing the current plight of the Samsung Continuum. Looking over things, it looks like we can make clockwork recovery work for you guys. Please note, I DO NOT have a Samsung Continuum, so I cannot test this procedure. IT IS ESSENTIAL that someone makes ODIN images PRIOR to this! While it should work, lets be safe, folks.
Once again, let me repeat, I do not have a Continuum to test this, so make sure you have proven, tested Odin images at your disposal. I found no kernels for the Continuum made, so I need to baseline for what works.
I made this cwm recovery Odin image for folks to try.

This alone WILL NOT give you clockwork recovery. The next step is to download Rom Manager, choose flash clockwork recovery, and from the choices, choose Samsung Fascinate.
This downloads an update.zip to your sdcard. Rebooting from Rom Manager should boot into recovery. Manual booting into recovery takes you to stock recovery. You merely need to install update.zip from the menu for clockwork recovery.
I know bubby is porting something better, but in the meantime, hope this helps.
FOR DL17 users, try putting this on your sdcard and see if clockwork works. (need to Odin this recovery first)

Yeah im on DJ20 maybe thats why it worked with out a problem for me.

whats the difference in the dj20 and di17? how do i know which one mine is?
actually i see that im showing DL17

DL17 is after the update that was just released, Dj20 is before.

Yeah apparently the code needs to be tweaked for DL17 still.

Interesting.... I am officially on DL17, and your clockwork still works wonderfully? At least I think xP it boots into it through cwm, and no errors?

One thing i did notice is that when the phone is off and i go to boot into revocery it goes into the stock recovery, But when i open rom manager on my phone and have it boot into recovery through that it goes into clockwork mod and works good.
Is it suppose to be like that? Any one know?

from stock recovery you have to apply the update.zip manually to boot into cwr

Ahh ok thats what i thought it was just wanted to make sure before i started messing with things.

I can confirm that this works... Red CWM up and working xD There is a non-important warning saying that it can't find the bitmap, but that isn't neccessary

can anyone give me some pointers on the options when using odin to flash this recovery image?

i have the epic 4g touch. i went to a ics build, from there i tried to flash back to a rom and ACS recovery will not let me flash back to any other roms i have. i am basically stuck with no way of using my phone.. everytime i've tried flashing a rom it says E:signature verification failed. is there anyway to fix this or flash back to a clock work recovery so i can flash the rom. any help will be appreciated.

I would odin the phone back to stock. Go to the development section and find the thread for Odin EL29 and follow the instructions in the OP. Should gets you back to a working phone. Then you can flash whichever ROM you're wanting to run.

thanks guys i will try that, i've tried running odin before but it keeps saying "downloading do not turn off target" and nothing happens. i will try to see if it will let me do anything from odin.

you really need to be completely familiar with odin and recovery before flashing any test builds.

I wasn't sure acs had a recovery for ics. on to Odin. you are only going into download mode you need a computer with drivers installed and Odin installed. there are some stickies in the dev section that will help. also qbking has some videos on YouTube. btw sfhub has auto root stuff to help you get to where you wanna be.

Absolutely. Please for the sake of your phone. Take some time and read and become very familiar with Odin before you do anything else. Once you have some that then Odin your phone back to stock and start fresh. There is a wealth of info out there just have to use it.

I'm in this thread with the same issue... Let me guess AOKP or Cyanogen flash? Sounds like brick city.

woah, wait. you're most likely not bricked. You should really share some kind of information about what you were doing when it got stuck.
i've had this happen a couple of times and usually it's been as simple as pulling the battery, booting into recovery and flashing a different ROM.

No actually I was just trying to flash back to el26 kernal.

LOL and? If your on an ICS rom the phone is not going to boot lol. You flash EL26 CWM Kernel for CWM, not to boot your phone.

yep. easy fix here. pull the battery, boot into recovery and flash whatever ROM you're looking for. if you're on el26, you should be safe.

Oh jeeze whyd you link that cruddy thread i made over at techgage. It wasnt all the well written to begin with and is slightly out of date.
Pretty sure this guy flashed the el26 kernel and doesnt know that the phone is not going to boot on it only recovery.

yes it's fixable. Just pull the battery, reboot to recovery (hold Power+Vol Up) and then flash whatever ROM you're trying to flash.
I say this assuming that you either used Odin or Mobile Odin already to flash the EL26 kernel. It's hard to tell because you haven't provided hardly any details.

You tell us, have you tried booting into recovery, the next step you do after installing the kernel so you can flash something. Already told you the phone is not going to boot if your on an ICS rom this is 1000% normal. Battery pull as stated should get you going.

hey rain, if i flash the proper kernel are you saying we may not be bricked?

Or get into download mode and use Odin to flash a one click. Simple as that.

I don't know if Droidgalaxy has this problem but the odin one clicks freeze for me in the data img process right before the modem install. So i don't know if that will work. Hopefully his situation is better than mine but i think we both have the same thing going on. So if i 1.85 odin to EL26 i may be ok?

...You mean the custom os warning screen that EVERYONE with an Epic 4G Touch gets?
Maybe read the screen? It has instructions. But why not try recovery first since this is the entire reason you were flashing the EL26 Kernel in the first place for right? I am starting to think there are a few things you have never done before and are jumping into somethign head first without knowing whats going on.

No Instructions just says: If you want to install a custom os press up (which brings me to odin mode) otherwise press down to cancel, Odin mode would work but my pc isn't recognizing the device anymore so I can't get to sd card.

I think this is a good opportunity to say how helpful the "How To" stickies and videos are. I've only had this phone for 2 weeks and I already feel like a pro with most things that involve flashing custom ROM's. if you just take the time to go through the videos or even play them when while you flash for the first time, then you should be set!

problem flashing clockwork mod t999....only Android system recovery opens

Hey, if anyhow could help that would be great. I followed ask the instructions to flash Clockwork mod on my t999. Odin recognized phone, i pda'd clockworkmod.tar file, it passed and rebooted. Then i held power up+home+power and entered Android system recovery. Have done a few times and i continue to get Android system recovery. Obviously my phone isn't rooted yet, just got it. Is there an alternate way to get clockwork mod or am i doing something wrong? Thank you, any help is much appreciated...

but when i read the instructions on rooting the phone it says must install clockworkmod first through Odin. You know what, ill look over it again, thanks for your quick reply..Jake

Ok, i just read the instructions again and it won't be possible to get past step 3 then
1. Copy cwm_superuserv3.0.7.zip
2.power off the phone
3. Bout your phone into clockworkmod
So if you know a way i can root my phone without being clockworkmod, can you paste a link? Because it's telling me i need clockworkmod to root phone....thanks again

Have you installed recent LH2 OTA update? This is a known issue with this update,quite well described here. To root your phone, you should flash CWM with ODIN, then don't let the phone boot normally (by pulling out the battery), then boot in CWM once and flash root. Finally, after booting the phone normally, CWM will be rewritten, but you will have rooted phone. Hope this helps.

There's another really helpful tutorial on rooting without tripping the flash counter. It's stickied around here somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.

Thank you very much, I did update it right when i got the phone. I will try that exactly when i get home, thanks alot, i appreciate all the help

By the way, it worked perfectly, i suggest though, when in Odin, uncheck auto reboot, so it didn't reboot after it passes, then i just pulled battery out and tried booting in CWM and it worked. Guess you can't let it reboot or you have to do it again. My last question is, do i keep my phone in usb debugging mode with root on stock rom? I had a galaxy s2 and i know some custom roms had to have usb debugging on. Just not sure if stock with root i should or shouldn't. Thanks again, i hit all the thanks meters on this one, was driving me nuts....Jake

I use TRWP is a better recovery for sg3

Complete noob thinks he may have softbricked his phone

Hi guys. Brand new to this whole rooting thing. Long story short, I rooted my device (Galaxy S3 sgh-t999) a while back and was just living off stock touchwiz just with all the bloatware deleted. I had the most recent version of TWRP installed and my recovery was based on that. I then downgraded TWRP to 2.3.3.0. It asked me to reboot and I did so. Now I'm stuck at the Samsung logo screen but it doesn't get past that. The device seems to boots up, but the moment the little Samsung jingle starts to play (you know the swirly blue mist that encompasses the Samsung logo), it stops in the middle of the jingle and the phone won't get passed it.
I tried rebooting back into TWRP via up, home, power and was able to get into TWRP recovery good enough, I can access everything in the menu and tried wiping dalvik, cache, factory reset and system and restored from my backup, but upon trying to restore from my custom backup, it just stalls on the Samsung logo screen. Any ideas if this is fixable? Sorry if this is in the wrong forum guys.
Also, I should make mention that whenever I try to hard power off my phone by holding down the power button, it turns off for a moment then boots back on again. I actually have to remove the battery in order for the phone to turn off. Don't know if that helps.

That's normal when you hold the power button down. It's a hard reset so it's supposed to boot back up.
As for your other issues, why did you downgrade twrp? If your backup was made with another version I suggest using the same to restore it.
Most of the time a factory reset will fix this type of problem, but it sounds like we are beyond that now. If the restore and another reset don't work, go to my firmware thread (sticky in development) and download the same or newer firmware as what you had before. Flash via Odin and factory reset from the stock recovery. ( This will wipe the internal sd)
That should get you going again.
For the future, please do not ever manually wipe /system. You could end up with no O/S to boot into and a hell of a headache! There is simply no benefit to doing so. Only risk.

I downgraded TWRP because I was having issues flashing a new ROM. Every ROM I tried flashing came up with an error and people said they were most successful with 2.3.3.0 so I tried it out. I suspected it might have screwed something up but stupid me always has to be sure. I would try and re-use an upgraded TWRP version if possible but I don't think I can access that from the TWRP menu itself and that's just about the only function my phone has at this point. Just booting into TWRP and playing around with the menu.

If you go to twrp's Web page you can download a newer one in .zip format and flash from your current version.
Or get the .tar.md5 one and flash from Odin.
In the newer versions you can actually flash the .img file itself. After choosing install and are browsing for the file, look for a button to use the .img.
I don't believe this is available in the older ones though.

Yup! It was really a simple matter of updating TWRP via Odin. I don't know why it never crossed my mind to use it. Maybe I'll have more luck using different ROMs through Odin instead of TWRP as well.

Odin is really only just for flashing full firmware for updates and returning to stock, and for flashing recovery. Pretty much everything else (all custom roms, for example) is meant to be flashed in a custom recovery like twrp. If you're ever unsure, reread the op of whatever you're flashing, and if your answer isn't there feel free to ask about it.
In a nutshell: Odin only flashes .tar and .tar.md5 files. Recovery flashes .zip.
I do highly recommend an app called Mobile Odin by chainfire. Search xda for his thread and make sure you read all the info if you're interested. It can make flashing super easy!

I am having a similar issue. I have never modified any of the original specs and this is a new issue as of 48 hours ago. In short, my device was on, auto shutdown and then froze on the Galaxy S3 load screen. Attempts to boot in recovery,safe, and soft/hard reset have not worked. I can access Odin mode. After reading the above thread I went to the link you suggested and went directly to the firmware my SGH-T999 started with(T999UVDLJA) and worked my way up the list to see if any of them would take. Unfortunately none achieved a 'PASS' via Odin. So, my question is, what do you do when all the steps have been followed and the firmware doesn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What error are you getting in Odin?
Do you see anything about warranty bit on the download screen? If you are, the flash is probably failing because you are trying to flash old firmware over new firmware. I suggest flashing the latest firmware for your T999 from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SGH-T999/
