Do I take the update? - Acer Iconia Tab A100

I have an update available on my new tablet I got yesterday day. Where do I find update info about it? Will I lose the ability to root if I take it?
Sent from my A100 using Tapatalk

I myself am new to the a100 community, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Now, from my current knowledge, if the update is for version 3.2.1, you will lose ability to root. With that said, if u want root, you should probably stay with ur current version.
Also, I believe some users have said they've been able to root the newer version (3.2.1) by the same 3.2 root method. They did encounter some problems but got around them easily somehow. But since I dnt know much on this, again, I advise against updating, unless you can confirm with someone whose successfully rooted the update and can get some clear instructions on how to root the newer version.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium

i have 3.2.1 and have rooted with su and others.

I myself have also updated to 3.2.1 and rerooted with no issues at all. The update is vital if you use headphones and hate how the screen autorotates when installing apks.

You can still easily achieve root with the new update, but we're still somewhat limited on what we can do with it because there has yet to be a custom recovery, or custom roms.
If you so choose to root, and find an Acer recovery tool on the market, don't use it because it won't work for the A100 and will definitely mess your tablet up.
After rooting, check out the "themes and apps" section to see what deb's have come up with for rooted tabs.
And remember, READ EVERYTHING BEFORE TAKING THE FIRST STEP!!!!!

Same here no update. What gives?

No update, reporting in.

no update here either, anyone know how or by what criteria or location acer distribute it?
maybe going from 3.2 to 3.21 is only minor ,,but it does raise question of when ICS is released, will some have wait months longer than others?

From my experience with the A500 you can wait a day to month. I'm not sure how they roll out updates but its dumb.

Maybe they found some problems with the update and decided not to open it up to all regions.

if theres no real difference with this update, i think i will skip it for now.

mmm I still dont get the update,,maybe they don't like Canadians?
Would help if I told them Im not Canadian,,but English just living in Canada??
But seriously it occurred to me that they maybe put a hold on the update,,,as ice cream sandwich is supposedly coming for A100 in January, but if some are still getting the 3.21 update obviously not

[Q] Not getting 1.22.605.2 CL161494 update.

So, I know this update was from May, but I have not received it. I used to have this update, then I rooted. I then unrooted by downgrading with a video I found in android forums. At the end of the video, the guy got the 1.22.605.2 CL161494 ota. I as previously mentioned have not gotten this ota yet. Is it possible Verizon stopped pushing this out in preparation for today's froyo release. If this is true, can I upgrade directly to froyo? If not, does anyone have an update.zip?
Thanks

Did the same thing, have the same problem. Since I'm an exchange user as well, I should be getting the May OTA. I know Froyo is coming but I don't want to wait for that to fix the exchange bug. Anyone know where I can download the May OTA before Froyo gets pushed to my DINC?

This doesn't make any sense to me,
so why would you have to go to the store oto have them push an OTA update from May?, why woulnd't you just use the most recent 2.1 RUU to get the update, and wait for the OTA?

Yea I saw that I thought that was talking about the Moto Droid.. do you see how it says "since its not being rolled out" that's not talking about the Incredible as it is being rolled out.
I still don't understand why you can't get 2.2 OTA did something happen?? I could probably upload a PB31IMG.zip for you of the latest 2.1 for you as well so you can download directly from your phone.
I am having the exact same issue here..
After I downgraded, there was an update.zip on the sd card.. should I push this in recovery?
Also, I HAVE done this downgrade in the past and have always gotten the OTA like a minute after the first boot.
It's okay, I live literally half a block away from a verizon store.

This is exactly what leads me to believe it has to do with the update being pushed. I had the same problem, so I just did the latest 2.1 RUU and got toe ROM.zip and made that into the PB31IMG.zip, and now I'm on the latest 2.1 waiting for the 2.2
So, if I do the latest ruu will it wipe my phone? Will the PB31IMG wipe my phone?

Hello I'm new here and I would like to ask if I should wait for someone to root the 4.22.651.2 or I should just download the new its the 4.24 and forget about rooting my EVO
So the golden rule is of course never take OTA updates. However, I look at it this way. Your already unrooted, and if they find an exploit were still looking at several weeks before it's released so why not see what the new firmware brings.
Im guessin now that this latest OTA is released things may progress, but what the heck do I know.
I got the update this morning.
So what happened? Is this a whole new ROM or just a patch?

Yeah. I just got the phone today for my wife and it updated while it was charging before I could root it...which sucks since rooting it played a HUGE role in the decision to get this phone.
I'm guessing I could really break something if I just tried the unrevoked/alpharev/revolutionary approach regardless of the fact that I now have hboot 0.98 huh?

Is the update going to try and force itself or will it does it have to be a manual update?
Also, if you are running a custom rom will this still effect people, or just people running stock root?
Unless things are different from my Original Droid then custom roms don't need to worry about it since most of them have OTA updates turned off.

Sent from my ADR6350 using xda premium
My crystal ball says it will take 3 months and 9 days to find the next exploit, and 4 months 15 days for the next patch that kills it.
It seems that one of the biggest benefits of custom roms are freedom of forced updates. I guess this is the answer to all the people concerned about getting s-on for the event of a return.

Wow, this thing pushes through without user consent? Holy crap am I glad I'm running CM7.
Just a thought - would users who have received the update against their will have the option of flashing the previously released gingerbread RUU? I'm guessing that even if they could, they'd still be stuck with the updated hboot and therefore unable to get s-off. I'm not really sure how all that works though. Anybody smarter than me have any thoughts?

The new OTA is pushed to your phone but it offers the option to accept, postpone or reject.
I am rooted (stock rom) and made the error of accepting. After the update my phone would not boot completely (erred with white triangle, yellow exclamation point, blue android). You can follow Conduitz's fix found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233267
NOOB Question
If I want the update and could wait for Root (have root now), how does one go about getting S-ON again? I used the alpharev method.
thanks in advance.

How will we know when we get an OTA ICS?

I'm a little concerned. With everyone here rooted and on custom roms, noone will get the OTA update. That means we have to rely on outside sources for the availability of that update. That also means we will have to unroot/go back to stock to get the update. That just seams like a lot of wasted time. I'm going back to stock right know so I don't waste any time.
Then again, maybe it would be better to get it a couple hours after it is released. I mean with sprints network pushing all those updates at once.... waiting might even be faster.
From what i've seen most of the time the ota is leaked here before its released.

You will know. It will be posted on BGR, Brief Mobile, Android Police, etc. Sprint usually lets the world know a few days before the OTA is sent. Chances are it is that it will be the last RDF that is posted before they announce.
On the old Epic the source was usually dropped the night before the OTA started. There's always someone lurking on stock and you get a topic on the forum stating "Have OTA notification can someone help me pull it?"
So, in conclusion, there's no cause for alarm.
Plus not everyone here is rooted. There are those that prefer unrooted stock. I can't imagine why but they exist

Rooting doesn't prevent the OTA from installing. Modifying or deleting system files with your root power is what causes the OTA to fail.
If you install the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN OneClick, the OTA will install file. It will disable your root, as all official OTAs do.
Won't our phones get the OTA notification regardless what build/ROM is installed?
Depends if the app that handles the updates was disabled/removed, never present, or still active.

Makes sense.
Do you know what app handles that and how to check and see if it's still in operation?
That was my thinking before too. When I first installed custom roms with ek02. I thought how I would have get the next OTA update. I just waited until the developer of the ROM i'm using updates it to the latest build. now I don't feel the need to accept any future OTA updats. Plus it will break root anyway, if you didn't change any system files. Might as well wait a few days and get the update with the ROM of your choice. you can always download the OTA update later on and install it manually if you want too. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I think it is System Updates, but might be Smart Device Manager.
The process to check for updates is distinct from the one that bugs you to install after it is downloaded. They may or may not be in the same app.

Hmmm. not sure if this is good news or scary. Without really good security on these OTA update servers it seems like a malicious developer could spoof an update and offer anything they wanted masquerading as an update.

This isn't new really. I have had ROMs that offered otas on other phones but it is sketchy at best. The news here is that its going to be easier instead of the dev having to create all the code on their own. I think this could cause some problems though. When I flash an update to cm10 I have to flash gapps and then flash on screen buttons. When there is another kernel available I'll be flashing that as well. So unless you can tell it what all to flash automatically afterwards its not for me.
