[Q] NFC in the UK - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Can we use this to pay for goods in the UK?
if so, what software do we need on the phone. There's a few shops in my town that have a contactless payment machine so I'm wanting to try it out.
any ideas?
Also, can these be used to scan and copy a proximity card for use at work to let me in doors?
I am one of the worst for forgetting my card each day so having my ID on my phone would be useful!

I think Android's implementation of NFC is still missing tag emulation mode, unfortunately.

I don't think so. Basically Android has the functionality to read/write NFC tags and communicate with NFC devices that expect an active NFC device, but can't communicate with NFC/RFID devices that expect an NFC/RFID tag.

any way we can make payments then like they can in the US?

Ive got it working in the UK. I flashed the app from here and factory reset, then opened Google wallet with a non-Apps Google account, added a new prepaid card and its all working, paid for a coffee at starbucks this morning in London. Only problem I have now is how to top up my prepaid card. Only US cards are supported.

The simplest way would be to super-glue your Oyster card to the back of the phone. But that would impair other NFC uses.

With Visa and Mastercard support we are meant to get Google Wallet in early 2012. Source

I paid with my Visa PayWave card today at Greggs.....the lady there had absolutely no clue what just happened, she kept telling me to insert my card even though I told her that I've got a contactless card and the payment has already been authorized(according to what was displayed on the terminal). She had no idea if that's normal/allowed so she had to ask the store manager. What an embarrassment. I can only imagine what would have happened if I tried to pay with my phone - panic in the shop? It would take me 5 minutes to explain what I did. It's nice to see contactless payments being accepted in more and more places, but in most cases the staff has no idea what is going on. I even had it in McDonald's once.

I've been trying.
The registration page in My Barclaycard asks for phone number and SIM serial number. It expects a SIM serial number that is 19 digits. The number written on my T-Mobile SIM is 12 digits. I contacted T-Mobile and they gave me my full serial number - 20 digits. So now it is too long. The best they could suggest was dropping the last zero. It didn't work. So I still can't link my Barclaycard to a contactless account.
Even if I managed to do any of this, I still wouldn't have the necessary app that comes pre-installed on the Samsung Tocco Quick Tap from Orange. So I wouldn't be able to do anything with the account. Maybe it is possible to port the app from that phone onto the Nexus.
Are all Orange SIM numbers 19 digits? I guess the Barclaycard/Orange Quick Tap thing really does only work with Orange.

Ok, so received an email from the android bug tracker saying that it's going to get resolved in the next software update \o/

It is going to take off here in the UK - but I think I saw it on BBC Click that it will reach widespread use by 2014

[Q] Google Wallet Topup

Hi there,
i am from the UK. based on all the forums i read about google wallet, there doesn't seems to be anyway we can topup our google wallet prepaid card from abroad.
which i have a question. if you are in the states, where google wallet is officially supported, how do you actually topup the prepaid card?
is it only possible via the google wallet app? do they only accept topping up from a american credit card?
i am thinking whether its possible to some how setup a VPN (not even a proxy), to the US, and topup via it?
I would suggest trying this - http://www.usunlocked.com/how_it_works.php?topic=USUnlockedCard

still doesn't quite answer my question of how to topup into the prepay card google gives. (as we can't add any CCards apart from cards from the US. plus specific banks only i believe).
unless you are trying to tell me, that i can add this virtual debit card into my google wallet app.

That won't work unfortunately.
I'm starting to think that we're stuck until Google officially release the application in the UK. What a shame.
Unless you have a friend/family member in the states who is willing to provide you with all of their card details. I don't have that.

They give you a US virtual prepaid card. Google Wallet only takes credit cards for top-up. Besides, I contacted the company and they confirmed that it won't work with Google Wallet.

****ty! I didn't realise that. Oh well! Sucks for us (UK/rest of the world).
I remember reading about Google Wallet on Modaco after GN release, and I noticed someone saying every time they reflashed the package they were getting a different ID... wonder if this means another free $10 - could be an nice supply of McDonald's being one of the only places I have seen where you can use it .

I was thinking about that, too. Logging into Google Wallet online shows no record of the $10, maybe that's why?
But I'm not too sure. Not only is it morally questionable, but you'd basically be stealing $10, and the people you're stealing from have your name, phone number, address etc.
But maybe I'll try it later on in the future. I'm sick of constantly being bugged to update to the volume bug fix update, so I might restore to stock, update and then try to reflash Google Wallet.

Hehe, great minds think alike I'm scared to do it too... As Google Wallet will be in UK for the Olympics (maybe before to test it)... they'll catch up with us
I've used up most of my $10 from google already after flashing Wallet onto my phone.
I purchased a USunlocked card and attempted to refill the prepaid card however it did not work.
Every attempt was met with something like: "Funds were not added. Please try again."
I sent an email to Google Wallet support (of which they've recently removed the email contact) and:
1. Ensure that your phone is connected to the CDMA data network or to
Wifi. Check if your Wifi is turned on.
2. Ensure that you are using a credit card (or a signature debit card) to
add funds, not a debit card requiring a PIN.
3. Ensure that your billing address for the credit card you are using to
load funds is in the United States. At this time, the app is unable to
accept P.O. Box addresses.
4. Ensure that you are using the most updated version of Google Wallet.
5. Try to add funds to the Google Prepaid Card again.
If you still experience trouble with this, I recommend contacting Money
Network, the issuer of the Google Prepaid Card. You can reach them at
855-896-0693.
Which was pretty much a canned response. I will however, contact the number and attempt a manual transfer over the phone.
CAN ANY US users check if they can actually refill their hacked/flashed Google Wallet with their own cards?

Wallet topup UK
Having looked at the google help on topping up (found at support_dot_google_dot_com_slash_wallet and selecting the payments link) it is unlikely that UK residents will be able to topup until google launches the wallet in the UK with a card issuer here. The main stopper will be the anti money laundering and know your customer requirements that are particularly tough in the US after 9/11. First off the add funds help says you need a credit card (not a debit or gift card) so even US issued prepaid cards wont work, secondly the billing address will need to be a US billing address, and thirdly you will need a US social security number or birth address in the US, so I think it is a non starter, have fun with the $10.
first off all Im in milan-Italy and untill I have money using google wallet without any problems
So, today I got a paypal credit card from a friend in the US to add funds to google pre paid card
so I fullfill the blacks spaces with me friend details, he lives in LA and I clicked next and after I got a message saying that it didint worke!!!!
why...???????
I then went back and made the procedure once again, and nothing...not working...I changed the amount of money this time...and nothing
and later stopped cause the money was being charged on paypal....!!!!!!
and I still without any money on google wallet.....
am waiting to see if the money was really charged from the paypal account of my friend....
anyone know wats happening??
thanks in advance and any input is appreciated....

Ok, but could you please elaborate on that ? What have you actually tried, what happened, etc. etc. ?
You get a credit card with a valid address, postal code, even a phone number.
While this may all look ok while you're entering it in, when you actually go to add the funds, it says that it didn't work and asks you to try again.
There is no error code, it just asks you to do it again. I have tried it repeatedly with all manner of combinations of getting the address right etc.

I will try the usunlocked card now. I am in Europe and have an European GSM Galaxy Nexus. I have managed to install and get working all the google apps and markets with provider faking and us VPN address, without using any hacked apps. Movies market doesn't tell me my phone is rooted like it does on my Nexus One, but it tell me none of my cards are valid for movies. I haven't tried to add founds to top up on my 10$ wallet account. When the usunlocked validation process is finished I will try that as well as renting movies. Will report back.

Dude... the fourth response in this thread explicitly states that USunlocked does not work...? Or am I missing something?
I don't have a hacked wallet app. I don't think it matters much though since I think the problem lays with the type of card used. But anyway my main reason for trying this is to be able to buy music and rent movies, I hope they aren't so strict there.

If you just transfer manually from your bank account 20$ to the Google pre-paid card account number that is written in Wallet, does it work ?
not sure if it as simple as transferring money to the account number....
Hopefully someone finds a virtual credit card that works!

The USunlocked card didn't work with me either, got the usual "funds not added". But it do work for renting movies and buying music, and that was what I hoped for. No stress with wallet here yet, not a single place to use it.

A social security number may be needed now...
Isn't it launching in UK for the Olympics? You might not have to wait much longer. On a side note, I have been using Google Wallet on my GN in US for a few weeks now and while it's absolutely awesome/futurisitic to use, it's surprising how few places take it here (I'm in NYC!). Google only has a very small number of partners and even the # of Mastercard PayPass locations is suprisingly small.
Hopefully things will pick up.
I'm just looking forward to an official Canadian launch soon. I have seen a lot of terminals that i could pay at using a GNEx
Okay, let me confirm some suspicions.
I can confirm that this method is working with a $25 Vanilla Mastercard (I'm located in Canada)
Second, a Social Security Number is only required after topping up more than two times. (Unconfirmed by me, but was stated in this thread)

The reason enter billing adresses to credit card payments is to verify your identity, obviously if your address on file with google doesnt match your cc billing adress thats on file with your bank, it will get declined. The reason vanilla works is because there is no address attached to it since you dont get billed, so you just create a fictive address with matching zip code you manually registered.
I just used my prepaid funds at a McDonald's in Brampton, Ontario and it was amazing, lol. I'm rooted by the way and used in no problem even with the unsupported device message.

Ok, got the app working on a Vodafone GSM Galaxy Nexus, added both a Visa and a Mastercard with a US address, but when I touch the Select card below the respective card, a pop-up appears: "Error Please try again.". Ideas ?
Is there a list of store to see who takes this?
Could someone pull the apk for us internationals to download? Please?
Just use Market Enabler from Play to switch to T-Mobile, then the app will become visible in Play and you can carry on from there.
As for the "Error, Please try again" when trying to set a Visa/Mastercard as Enabled ? Anyone ?
Yeah, I did a fresh install and reset within the app. Still a no go through. I'll try and wipe data within settings. I really hope I can get it working since I never got it working on the Wallet app before.

I was able to add my Citibank Debit Card. I tried it twice a couple times at the Walmart self checkout. It automatically popped up and asked me for me for my PIN number, so I punched it in. However, both times it automatically declined my purchase. So I just let it scan the EMW Chip on my card, punched in my PIN, and it went through flawlessly.
I love this phone so far! Really looking forward to when I can root it

I was told by Samsung support that if your card fails to register the first time, use the retry button on the pay screen. Apparently Samsung pay will use a different method the second time. YMMV.
