[Q] can the search bar be removed ? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Nearly every picture of this phone I've seen it has a rather large search bar at the top of the home screen. Can it be removed? If not - could it be removed with root ?

P3Droid has done it...

by far my biggest gripe with ics

Hum. But he didn't say how Hopefully google rethinks this feature of the software. I mean I don't mind it being optional and default but ...

If you remove that ... you need another hack to enable "search".
Because there is no search "key" (virtual key).

They could bind it to long-press task switcher key for example. My x10 did also come without search button but it was bound to long-press menu key. Should be possible with software keys as well, right?

I wouldn't mind so much if they let me resize the damn thing. I know it's important but I really want it a quarter of it's current size.

I think P3Droid did it by modifying Launcher.apk and pushing it back to the device.

thye could let us at least be able to move it.. say to one of the other 5 screens, so its not on the main one

I believe its constant across all 5 homescreens, but I understand what you mean. I assume you mean have only one, and make it available to move around right?

If you are willing to root, then you can do many UI customizations as per P3Droid's mods or Paul_Brian's ROMs. You need root because most involve editing the launcher or framework-res.apk and other system components.

Yea. For me anyways I would rarely use search; so stuffing it in a place where it doesn't take prime space would be nice....; alternatively it could just be an ap that you can put on a screen as desired; or a menu option to enable / disable. Lots of solutions that doesnt' require it to be on every screen at the top...

Considering that you can't use the space that is left when you get rid of the search bar, I personally don't see what all the fuss is about.
You cannot place homescreen shortcuts or any other widget there, since as soon as you pick up an icon or widget to place on the home screen, that area is reserved for the Remove/App Info/Uninstall prompt.
So the only result of getting rid of the search bar would be a blank space that can serve no function at all. If I had to choose between a blank space that cannot be utilised, over a search bar...I'd choose search bar.

Or just download a different launcher. My HC tablet has the Google Search widget at the top-left corner that is static. A quick ADW EX download and bada-bing, bada-boom.
I'm running ICS CM7 theme on my G2x and I kinda like the search bar's location. Eventually I'd like to replace it with a clock or weather widget, but I don't stick with the stock launcher very long.

Ack I though the space could be used (I do not yet have the phone). That is also sad

When you disable google search it doesn't remove the permanent widget?

Your absolutely right but the trouble is it just looks ****e so I'd rather it wasn't there.
I'm sure someone will work out how to reclaim the space.

I find its design rather pointless, as soon as you click in the search box you're taken to another slightly smaller search box which has none of the transparency of the first...

How about a complet transparent search bar? You couldn't see it but it's there and if you know it you can use it.

The search bar should remain a widget, as it used to be. That would give users the most options, which is what Android is about.

Prevent phone from adding shortcuts after install

Hey guys,
As the title says I am looking for a way to disable that stupid function when you install an app there will be automatically a shortcut added to the desktop.
Didn't find any solution for that, even using different launcher and no sense launcher.
It really ****s up my beautiful desktop screens.
Thanks in advance.

It's in the market settings ('Auto-add widgets')
you can also just long press and drag the widget up to where it says "remove" at the top of the screen. i prefer downloading the widget and then deciding if i want it visible or not.

thanks for the clarification. as i said, i prefer deciding whether it should be visible or not, rather than having them all not visible (and maybe having to hunt for it).
I normally use a blank page for this: First navigate to that page, then install the applications.
Now this page has all applications I have to try out.
It's some sort of todo page.

[MOD][JB] Removed. Feel free to delete this thread.

For anyone who flashed my modified launcher and is bothered by the fact that voice search can still be activated, here's the stock launcher in flashable zip form.
http://www.mediafire.com/?l89erxebp8n50bt
I apologize for any inconvenience or time wasted.
I've tried setting all focus and clickable attributes to "false" in every xml file that references "search bar", "qsb" and "voice search". Voice search can still be activated when you tap the top right corner of the screen.
Rather than let people install something that doesn't work as I intended it to (and there's another launcher mod on here anyway) I decided to take it down. If I figure it out some time, I'll repost, but I might not have to since FufNuf has the same thing going.
Check out FufNuf's thread for essentially the same launcher mods.
Mods, feel free to delete this post whenever you'd like.

Cool I'm glad you like it. When my kid goes to be tonight I'm going to edit the margins. I like having everything fill the screen more. I'll post a few with smaller margins.
Very nice,

See the screenshot. Widgets, the dock, dock icons, dock divider, and app grid fills more of the screen. I didn't know what else to call it. Since it's a launcher, and everything is spread out over a wider area, the most logical short name I could think of at 2AM was "wide launcher".

Awesome, margins would be a bit better if smaller.
Also I noticed that the top right corner of the screen glows as you move between home screens and when you press that corner Google voice search comes up. It's as if the search bar is still there, just not visible.

I just followed the directions on that tutorial and thought I'd share what I did for myself. That's really weird, and not good. Thanks for telling me. If I can't figure out how to completely disable the search bar, I'll just take this whole thread down.
Update: Actually I think I've got it. Testing now, then I'll take down all the links, fix them all, then reupload them

[Q] How do I turn off the blue pull tab app drawer??

It allows you to access the multi-window feature of the NII, for accessing 2 apps at the same time.
To be fair its not a particularly well advertised feature and with little to no instruction a lot of people won't know what it is for.
But it is for split screen mode.
You can drag apps to the top of bottom part of the screen from that bar to run two apps side by side.

[Q] Removing/Changing the apps in the bottom row of the home screen

Hi there,
Just got a new Galaxy Tab 3 10.1. There's a line of apps installed below the page/panel indicator on the home screens, with a bunch of (to me) ill chosen apps. But I can't drag them off the screen to delete them, like I can the ones above the page indicator. I can't find any mention of what this apparently separate panel is called to search better.
Of interest, are people happy with their purchase of one of these? So far I'm finding it pretty ordinary - not horrible, just ordinary...

Just drag the apps on the lower part of your home screen to the upper part where it says delete. then you can go to your apps and drag them to the lower part of your home screen to add them in the dock
If you're saying about the lock screen then I don't know
Hi!
I'm pretty happy with the tab 10.1! With the latest OTA update it runs even smoother! The runtime is great, can handle up to 5 days with daily usage without charging. I received my leather case today, a 360° case.. I can put it horizontal or vertical and it "wakes up" when i open the case.
With that prize its an absolutely recommendation.
Greetings

Hi there,
On the default home page, there's two large widgets on the top (weather and news). Below that there's a Google search bar. Below that there's a row of shortcuts. These all behave normally. Below that there's the page/panel indicator (telling you which home page you're on) and then at the bottom there's another row of shortcuts. It's that last, bottom row that I'm having trouble with. They don't seem to act normally - I can't drag them off to delete as normal. They appear to be hardwired. They are not the choice I would select and I want to change them.
Are other people able to delete these shortcuts?
Thanks!

I have the same problem. I'm tired of reading the answer "click and hold then drag it up". It seems to be the stock answer on all forums. They won't move! No matter what I do, the ridiculous row of apps bottom most on the screen is stuck. There's no help for this in the help app/widget. Someone must know how to unlock these darn things. I want to replace them with ones I use regularly.

Qranparoger,
Unfortunately that is the correct answer of click and hold and move. I just did it to mine and I can move two of the three apps I have in the bottom row. The only one that cannot move is APPS. My SETTINGS and FIREFOX can both be moved to the main screen above the bottom row.
My tab is rooted, but uses stock rom. There is nothing special about what I have done. I checked settings to see if I had changed a display or security function but I do not see anything. I do remember when I first got the tab that I too was having problems. But I do remember solving it and removing the bottom row (except APPS) and rearranging the icons or deleting the icons.
It think that maybe it might be in the APPLICATION MANAGER in SETTINGS that you "Turn Off" the app and it might vanish from the bottom of the screen. Again, I cannot remember how I did it but it can be done.

Latest ROM update - still can't change the apps. My tab isn't rooted, and I couldn't be bothered to now. I don't necessarily want to "turn off" the apps, just not use my precious home screen space. Anyway, I solved the problem by buying a Nexus. Yep, free Samsung is just collecting dust, piece of rubbish... Before anyone rages on me, there's a bunch of reasons I didn't like the Samsung, not just this one thing.

Any way to get rid of the Google search bar at the bottom of the home screen? It is annoying and I never use it.

Your rooted so check out end of this thread post #565 from @Tulsadiver, he shared a couple files to remove search bar plus a couple features.

It's funny, because before I had no use for it. I'd always stick with opening chrome and typing in the search area there. For the last year now I've been using the search bar widget on my homescreen and seriously can't go without it. I barely even open Chrome anymore. And even when I do use a customer launcher time to time usually Nova...first thing I do upon setup is stick that search bar right at the bottom lol.
