[Q]Led lights? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I have a stock HTC raider and I'm wondering how to set up led notifications on the front of phone if at all possible.
Sent from my stock HTC Raider using XDA App

There aren't any unfortunately.

bln compatible kernal and bln app located in market. works great as a notification for missed calls/msgs/emails

So does noled app!

good I don't see a difference when using it

how in the hell is it draining ur battery??? i get emails and texts when im asleep and my battery percentage barely moves while im asleep for hours on end on noled. Now maybe if u have every option on in noled maybe then its draining like having time stamp flashing and all other the options.....ive had it on my vibrant and this phone both on roms and it has never drained my battery

I think he's talking about the sensors next to ffc.. yeah I wish they were leds
sent from my real Gs move in silence like lasagna

Noled is the best app ever for this phone! no battery drain at all for me, it doesn't even show up in my battery usage stats because it's so low.
Imo it's even better then an LED because you can instantly see what activity you've missed by just glancing at the screen.

The one thing I miss about my G2x is the light in the buttons pulsing s when I had a notification. Loved that.

What would best for the HTC raider/vivid and the telus galaxy s2x? I have the raider and my friend has the telus gs2x. I know both have front facing led's so what's the best option for each of us, if anyone can help out.

BLN > NoLED
I don't like how NoLED is option-less for the most part. Like you can't set it up so the notifications just display in one location, aligned, and nice looking, no you're forced to have them display in random positions on the screen, its kinda weak sauce. With BLN its just like having an LED again. The pro version is well worth it, giving the ability to blink your buttons, its even BETTER than having an LED on the phone (except for different colors for different apps, etc).

Sorry for the late response...Personally I feel BLN is the best option as it uses the capacitive keys rather than the screen.. its as if you have a notification bar! I haven't seen any difference in battery or stability and EVERY notification is received in a timely fashion.

it kinda sucks that you need a compatible kernal for BLN. im scared to root my galaxy s2 and flash a kernal due to previous bad luck with my vibrant. so i will stick with noLed. i love the charging percentage on the screen and all the options it offers.

Noled works fine for me

I have owned quite a few Samsung phones and noled would drain the battery a lot across all of the phones I have tried it on. BLN is the way better option as long as you are running a kernel that supports it.

UPDATE
i finally rooted and flashed a kernal plus custom ROM.
i now use BLN with Noled and i see no difference in the battery!
they both work well. you cant go wrong with either choice.
Noled gives you beautiful visual notifications (plus custom icons) i have mine set up so that i can double tap my screen to turn it on. well its already on but you know what i mean lol. also i have set it so when i charge my phone i get a charging percentage.
Bln actually gets annoying. im the type of person that doesnt always clear my notifications so my LED lights are always blinking due to bln lol. bln doesnt give you an idea of what type of notification you have so you actually have to unlock your phone to see. thats a problem for me because sometimes i ignore my phone depending on the notification. with Noled i can actually see that i have a email, which i will ignore because i dont really care to check my email. with. with noled you get a glimpse at what to expect. 3text messages 2missed calls and 5 emails with BLN its just blinking lights.
i like both apps and use them together. i do prefer noled over bln. it just comes down to personal preference of how you like your visual notifications.

[APP] LED Me Know - app for LED notification !

Found out about this from the G2 forum
"LED Me Know" is a great app (available from the market) which you can use to make the LED blink for notification ! You can select if you want it to blink for new SMS, gmail, missed calls, etc. Also there's an option to make the trackpad light blink, though I've not tried that myself. Works great on my DZ with stock ROM

I can see it using a few MB of memory, but that's fine, I've got plenty of RAM. I haven't noticed any difference in my battery usage today since I installed it this morning, but I'll keep an eye on it, thanks.

thanks for the heads up, might need to give it another shot
had it for 1 day, and deleted, cuz when i receive sms or email while i sleep, the blink will either wake me up, or it will drain out the battery by the time i wake up (after it blinked for so many hours....)
good concept, good app to be use while i'm awake~

ok, so why not put the phone face down, or in its case or something if you don't want to see the LED flashing ? Another alternative is to turn off the service when you want to go to sleep (just go into the app and select the option to turn it off).
And did you find it to really drain the battery overnight ?
Maybe it's not for you though.
Unfortunately I also had a problem with this app draining the battery. I installed it on my stock T-Mobile G2 and experienced less than a third of my typical battery life today while using it. Not sure if the app itself is causing this or the flashing LED is drawing that much current. I uninstalled it for now.

Noled

Anyone using Noled yet? Does it still work without too much battery consumption on the amoled plus?

Still amoled, still no batery usage on black screen so yes it should still work without to much battery drain
Just tried it and works fine.

I thought I had read somewhere that the Galaxy S II had custom controls over the lights under the capacitive buttons. I take it that can't be used to show notifications without a custom kernel though?
It works.. BUT. When noled is on and displaying, it keeps the phone awake which rubbed out 70% of my battery in 6 hours..
It was the first app i installed, have this on my Galaxy s also. I have always had noled set to turn off after 30 minutes if the phone is not used. I figure if you have not looked at your display for 30 minutes, then there is no point in having it continuing on, also, you can have it set the phone to minimum brightness when it is on, so battery consumption is not that bad. Works great though, best app developed for these Samsungs.
Hi there,
Has anyone got this to work for emails? I have several Email accounts set up, but the only one that shows in the email list is the Google one. I have tried putting watches on the Email app(s). With no joy.
Any tips?
Thanks

For any email accounts other than gmail you have to open up 'Toggle notifications' which then should pop up asking you to enable noled in the accessibility settings. After that, just scroll down the list and enable 'Email'. If, like me, you have 2 email check boxes, just enable them both. Works great, with no problems

I read this as well...
The only controls you have for the capacitive lights is how long they stay on for when you are using the device.

Which means that the software can somehow control the lights (telling them how long they should stay on), so with a custom kernel/ROM it should be possible to use them as notification lights.
On the SGS though, there was a mod which used the bottom lights of the device... So maybe somebody can port that mod to the SGS2???

Yes, Neldar's BLN. The downside of that solution is the requirement of kernel support, whilst NoLED works right away on stock. Some users report heavy battery drain on NoLED, something that I personally never've experienced, though.
Yeah, and we are not that far yet with the SGS2 that we have the kernel support I assume.
Just checked this out, think I may have to download it. Thanks guys
Im waitin eagerly for one of the devs to provide support for bln, keep checking my phone every 5 mins for notifications! Killing my productivity

I've been using NoLED on my GSII for about a day now. Doesn't affect battery life that much. However I do check the notifications within 5-10 mins so it doesnt stay lit for long.
One issue I observed is when I receive a text and I swipe the message icon in the lock screen, it takes 3-5 seconds to open the messaging application. With NoLED disabled it is pretty much instantaneous.
noled and missed calls
I am having trouble getting NOLED to notify me for missed calls. The app works flawlessly for texts and emails. I have spent a week studying all my "setting's" in both the apps and phones menues. I is a Galaxy s ll. Thank you

Light Flow battery drain?

I tried using the app called Light Flow in order to control the LED notification colours, seems to have been draining the battery..anyone else experience this?
Yeah I've noticed something causing my cpu to 'wake' more than it should when it should be idle. I've been thinking it might Light Flow, think I'll uninstall it tonight and see how much I lose overnight.
Don't know whether it's been the updates it has been getting or if it's done it all the time, but I know my battery certainly didn't drain this quickly before when idle.

yeah same thing happens to me, in the battery stats Android OS is the main contributor to drain and the CPU Awake time is always pretty high
interesting I havent suffered much noticeable effect on the battery. I juhst crashes every time i reboot the phone.
I disabled it earlier because I was having problems with it flashing after the notification was gone. Didn't notice any extra strain on battery though, although it could have been there.
At the moment it's 1 day 16 min on battery, with 20% Android OS and 5h 38m awake CPU time, is that high? (the Android OS bit/awake time)
Not noticing any drain with Lightflow... I notice that when an email/text comes in the phone wakes up briefly but whether that's Lightflow or normal I don't know... but the phone is asleep from then until I turn it on, even though the LED is flashing away merrily in the meantime. And I looked at this overnight - so getting an alert at maybe 2 or 3am and then actually checking it at 8am or so. Nothing abnormal between 2am and 8am, and noticed no extra battery drain.

Had this problem but I think I understand how it works now.
It will keep flashing if you have "individually" removed the notifications out of the notifications bar. Removing notifications this way doesn't seem to register in Light Flow but you can solve this by:
(a) running that app
(b) hit the "X" button to clear all notifications in the notifications bar.
Can anyone find a way to see if it really is Light Flow that consumes that much battery? I cannot really tell.
Hi.
Light flow will cause some battery drain, but I try to keep it as little as possible.
You will see a fair amount of time partially awake (not the screen on, but showing as awake in the battery usage) because of the app as every time you have more than one outstanding notification (of different colors) the app has to do a partial phone wake to run the alarm manager that changes the color.
There's a few things that can help this, firstly slowing down the frequency of cycling colors ("Notification - battery", in general settings).
Fast = 2.5 seconds
Medium = 5 seconds
Slow = 10 seconds
Very slow = 20 seconds
The other option is just to show the highest priority notification that's currently outstanding - then you'll just get 1 color (e.g. if you have an e-mail, missed call and sms message all outstanding - if you have priority of 1 set on missed call then only that will display of the 3)
Unless you really need them, all the additional light controls in the general settings menu e.g. button backlight, flash etc should be disabled to keep things minimal.
With the latest 2.7.x releases I found (on a nexus one) that the partial wake is for less than 100th of a second on every cycle change (previous version had got to about 400ths of a second)
As for not clearing the notification, at the moment I've got no hooks into swiping away individual notifications from the notification bar so they will keep flashing.
I'm thinking of adding an extra battery saving option where just the most recent notification type is shown as there wouldn't be the need for partial wakes for that.
The good news is I just got a Galaxy Nexus yesterday and after quite some time got the adb drivers working so I'll be looking into seeing what's possible with ICS soon.
So far I've just made one ICS specific change for the next release which is to remove the nag screen on upgrading about restarting accessibility as it seems google have finally sorted out the accessibility bug that caused the need for a restart!
Cheers for the clarification and help, andrewpmoore. Great app.
The option that makes the LED shows only the most recent notifications will be VERY WELCOME! Look forward to the update
Good Job, glad you finally have the handset! can't wait for the next release!
No issues here. I think it really depends on your settings those. Especially the color cycles.

Don't get too excited about the next release. It'll just be a bug fixes one (and the nag removal for ICS)
If there are any devs on here that can work out a way to pick up on the swipe to remove notifications could they get in touch. I've not found anything useful in the accessibility service so far.
Probably didn't see my question in another thread, but can you add a full RGB colour picker? Seeing as it's an RGB LED I assume this is possible, rather than just having the current, fixed, selection of named colours?
Great job andrewpmoore, will definitely use this as soon as my GN arrives
Don't need to worry about battery drain from Light Flow any more andrewpmoore.
I first tried disabling the app then uninstalling, I still had the same battery drain from Android OS, so my problem lies elsewhere.
I've reinstalled Light Flow now, great app!

It's something I've had on my todo list for a while. It'd be relativley simple for phones line the Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus, the difficult part is fitting it in with the "direct mode" settings and mapping colors between them.
I'll see what I can do.

same here.. massive battery drain/phone got hot and she went night night.. had to pull battery. uninstalled
Considering other people are getting the sleep of death without Lightflow it seems a little rash to decide that Lightflow is causing it.

Add to that the cases where people are using Lightflow and NEVER had the Sleep of Death, it's fair to say Lightflow is not the (sole) cause. It MAY be behaving badly with some other app I guess... but I've been running it since day 2 (18th) and never had the sleepy death thing.

BLN battery drain?

I'm using the faux kernel with stock ROM, just set up BLN notification and it seems to work great itself and with tasker. I noticed the in the BLN thread(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=823922) it says our SGSII draws more battery than SGS, but there is no specific numbers quoted.
So I'm wondering if anyone using BLN has tested it against normal battery idle drain with either blinking & static light?

+1 I want to know too.
No specific numbers but I've been using BLN since it was first enabeled for our phones and I can definitely say blinking KILLS battery way more than not. I had been scaling down the amount of "blink time" for notifications and scaling up "static on" more and more till it was only set to blink for 3 minutes. Switching the whole thing to "static on" for 5 min total has made my battery vastly better. If you are concerned about missing texts/calls after 5 minutes install something like "missed call reminder" from the market so you can set custom reminder tones for forgotten or ignored notifications.
Please hit thanks if I've helped!

[Q] How to make notification lights blink faster without Liteflow?

I am currently using a custom rom, AndroidME GNex 1.9 and I have faster blinking notification lights built into the rom. I am looking to switch to another rom as the developer has disappeared and I'm still on 4.1.1, frequently getting messages to update to 4.1.2 Many of the other roms do not list faster blinking LED's as a feature though. I know Liteflow drains the battery a lot but I can't seem to find another alternative. This feature has been so useful I don't know what I'll do without it.
Any suggestions? I tried looking for liteflow alternatives but nothing came up.
Just to let you know, I don't think light flow is any worse for the battery than what is built in the rom. I just checked in the battery usage and light flow isn't even mentioned. Maybe I'm not looking right? And even if it did, it wouldn't be much, I thought led lights don't take a lot of battery

Just chiming in. I use Light Flor as well and it's had 0 effects on my battery life. It is also not mentioned on my battery screen. Last thing mentioned is Instagram and that is at 2%.
