Hey everyone, can someone tell me what can I do with a rooted kindle fire? I know you can install cynanogen but what does that do?
I'm planning on getting one for christmas and want to know a few things before buying it.
I've never rooted anytihng before but I've modded xbox, wii, ds, psp, iphones, etc.

The Fire doesn't support ad-hoc networks natively, but there's a workaround here.

I'm considering rooting my Kindle Fire, but am still unsure. Doesn't rooting it void your warranty? I'd hate to have something happen to it and then be stuck with an unusable KF that I can't even return. What are your guys' thoughts on it?

Basically, a rooted kindle will allow side-loading of apps, outside of Amazon's built in app store. Their app store will not list apps like Netflix because Amazon is hoping most users will utilize their streaming service and provide an additional income stream (that's why the kindle is so inexpensive).
Everyone is waiting for a fully functional CyanogenMod7 or Ice Cream Sandwich custom ROM to be released. Until that happens, I have rooted my kindle, copied the apk files of select apps from my Android phone and side-loaded them to my kindle.
I have found the kindle the runs almost everything I want and allows me to be patient for the upcoming ROM releases.
Same thing as other rooted Android Devices.
Run custom ROMs and such.

Taking a quick look at the warranty on Amazon.com, I don't see anything about your warranty being void if you you root or modify your Kindle. That said, the warranty won't be valid if you break your Kindle by rooting in.
If you need to send it in for repairs, you can always flash a stock rom. If it's too broken to be flashed, it's probably too broken for Amazon to tell that you rooted it:

rooted fire, wht esle?
Two weeks ago I rooted my kindle fire. I was about to throw it away because I hated the interface etc.
Stumbled on to the xda site than god.
Am now running jellybean 4.1.1. Amazing and now I can't put this thing down.
What else will this device do? What other ROMs are available? How do you stay on top of upgrades?
At some point you have to stop and it hard to do

What? Stop? Nope. Never. A ROM a week and should my wife turn her back on her Fire for even a fraction of a second, it gets it, too!

Yes, this is another sob story about how I so naively purchased a kindle fire from some guy on craigslist. Before you all ridicule me about morals and ethics you should know that I have spent the past 4 days on the phone with amazon and the state police in which I made every effort to return this stolen/lost kindle to it's rightful owner. To make a very long story short, Amazon won't take the kindle back or provide me with a way to return the kindle and the police say there is nothing they can do. So now I am stuck with this blacklisted kindle fire and being the nerd that I am I couldn't help but try to crack this cookie. So here's where I'm at...
I'm attempting the sign in on my amazon account but of course i'm unable because the serial number to my kindle is blacklisted. I have have successfully rooted the kindle and currently have Gr9.2 modaco Rom installed hoping that would somehow bypass my problem but no such luck. I've looked in to altering my serial number but haven't had much luck with that either nor am I sure it's even possible? I'm just about ready to throw in the towel on this so any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

First of all, thank you for the advice.
I see that you are running both jelly bean and modaco. What are the advantages of that? What I am really trying to achieve here is keeping the look of the stock kindle fire GUI and somehow gaining the functionality of a non-blacklisted kindle. Will installing either of those ROMs achieve this?

Yup I think I have it set up as good as it's going to get. I installed Jelly Bean 4.1.1 aka project Jandycane by lithium76 as my ROM and then found a very helpful post by tyriekgo. He basically has a set of kindle fire apk's including the amazon launcher. I put all the apk's on my kindle and using a file manager from the android market ( I used astro file manager ) I installed them all. Now when I push the home key on my kindle I am asked if I want to use Jelly Bean or kindle fire. You can access the amazon store and purchase books and apps but the videos still don't work. I'm sure somebody will figure out a way around this soon enough. I have attached the links to both posts that I used to do everything I mentioned. If you follow the directions on those posts you should have no problems. If anyone needs more help with this just ask. I am very happy with the way it turned out, it's ALMOST like my kindle isn't blacklisted anymore.

I have a Kindle fire 2 NON hd version
the unit has a BAD esn so I figured the easiest way to fix it would be to root with android.
But everything I have seen shows a HD version. Can this tablet be rooted?
and if so what port do i use.

Step away from the Kindle.
If you can't see the posts above yours that explain how to do it, I think you should leave alone. Read lots or you will brick your device.

lets start with this my question wasn't properly worded.
1 is there a way to bypass the bad esn? Amazon said I have a worthless unit
2 I have cyanogenmod in two units but did not require a fast boot cable.just direct usb connection.But most things i have
read here say you should use one. does it make a big difference?
lastly is there a mod that is simulator to cyanogen mod for the fire2 7" non hd?

1. I'm not sure but I don't think so.
2. Cyanogenmod is absolutely possible to get on the kindle fire 2, if you check the version number you should have 10.2.X. The reason he told you to step away from the kindle is there are multiple posts in this section about how to root the Kindle fire 2 non-HD version, which you didn't seem to see so he assumed ignorance. No, you don't necessarily need a fastboot cable, but it's nice to have if you end up bricking your kindle. I've rooted mine through the Qemu and Bin4ry's root method which you will find listed somewhere here. Then you have to install TWRP bootloader, I'd recommend pulling a backup off the system through adb, then wipe and flash Cyanogenmod and GApps (Again, you say you've done this on other devices, but there's a thread here related to the kindle fire 2 specifically so follow that one).

Can anyone answer this yet? Does flashing CM override bad ESN?
If you mean can you use cm on a kindle that is blacklisted then yes, though I'm not condoning stolen kindles by saying this.

I have a KF2 non hd and i am a bit of a noob tbh, i side load apps all the time and apart from that the kf2 is totally standard, i want to see if i can make it more like my HTC ONE, so as i understand it i will have to root it and thats all i know.
Can you good folks advise me on what i can do please

The HTC One is likely running an OEM version of Andriod called Sense, of which (iirc) the source hasn't been released, so you won't find it for the KF. However, there are plenty of other ROMs available that may suit your needs. Before we get into that, though, I must strongly suggest you get a factory cable before attempting anything, as it will help you in case things don't go according to plan (they rarely do). After that, there is a thread at the top of this forum that serves as a FAQ, and can be used as a guideline for pointing you in the right direction regarding what steps must be taken to get you where you want to be.

Its also known as a fastboot cable, they are very useful when your kindle gets a red screen of death, or you get stuck in a boot loop without any means of recovery because you can plug the cable in and it immediately boots up and goes into fastboot so you can reflash the system image from there and such.

OK, so here is where I'm at. I've had our Kindle Fire 2nd generation for 2 years now and no matter what method I have tried and no matter how many times I've tried them there just seems to be no way to actually root this thing. My plan once it's rooted is to but an android Rom on it and load it with stuff like games and what not for the kids to use since my wife has the Tab 3 and they always want to use that. Well, yeah I don't like that idea. I have tried burrito root, I have tried FFF root. I have searched for other ways to do it and everything is for the HD version. I don't have the HD version. I have the one they put on sale right before the HD one came out. I think with coupons and such at Toys R us we paid about 80 bucks for this thing. I hate the interface for amazon. I hate that you can't have the App store from google on it. I'm at a loss here everyone. There has to be a way to get this thing the way I want it. Now I will say that I get a little into the FFF process and at a certain point it stops seeing the device and just sits there at waiting on device. Well the kindle isn't doing anything so what is it waiting on? Please someone give me some good news!! Thanks!
So an update, I stumbled across another root method that I hadn't seen yet. Well that didn't work either, however it did give me the drivers for the Fire HD and for whatever reason that caused the Fire Utility to see my Kindle all the time. However the downside to everything is that no matter how many times I tell it to run the utility and to root it, it won't go into fastboot mode like the utility is telling it to do. That's my hang up. So, where do I go from here? Is it even possible to root this stupid thing anymore??

Hey guys, I'm brand new to some of this stuff so please bear with me. I've tried hunting all over the internet for help and at this point XDA is my last hope.
I've got a Kindle Fire 7 (5th Gen) that I previously used for reading books and whatnot. It's gotten so slow to the point it's intolerable and even on factory reset it's lagging pretty bad. I've wanted to try to remove the Fire OS from it for some time but never really could figure it out and today when I did try to do so I ran across some problems. I'm at the point where I really don't know what I'm doing and I don't want to brick it.
My version, according to the tablet, is Fire OS 5.3.6.4. I'd really like to get this thing converted over but I'm seeing that in some cases this device cannot be rooted because it cannot be downgraded. I'd like to hear it directly from the professionals that do this stuff in their daily lives.
So, I suppose in summary, is it even remotely possible for me to get this thing over to some kind of standard Android? If so, how do I do it? You're really going to have to break it down for me because I don't know anything about Flash Fire and some of these mods I'm seeing. I do computers, not tablets. Lol.
