Worth it to wait and see if HSPA+ version drops in the US? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Is it worth it to wait and see if the GN drops in the US? Right now I can get one from Handtec for ~$696, but if it dropped here would it really be priced any cheaper? It's set to be Canadian$650 (~$636 in American monies), would it be priced maybe around $600 if it's released here? Maybe even less?
Or, is the HSPA+ version even going to come out stateside? All I've been hearing about is the CDMA/LTE version.
Insight?

Canadian version is only US$ 636???
if that is true I will definitely buy one!

But you have to be on their carrier and blah blah you can't just buy it outright.

I debated this for a long long time. Then my N1 had it's usual set of daily hiccups, and I had it. So I bought one. It's a great gadget, and almost worth the $700 I paid.
But, if you're okay with your current phone, stick it out and wait. It won't go up in price.
Early adopters never get rewarded. Only screwed with headaches.

You can buy off-contract if you are using that carrier?
or you can only get it along with 3yr plann?

If you go to Canada and buy it outright you're going to be paying local taxes in the 10%-15% range, and either paying to convert your USD or pay a foreign transaction fee on your credit card... and you're still gonna pay $700 out the door, just like ordering from the UK importers.
If/when it does come to the US unlocked I'd expect it in the $550 range. Just depends how much you wanna pay to get it now.

$550!? I sure hope so!

Sometime last week, an AT&T version passed through the FCC, with HSPA+. Just about a month or so ago, AT&T was asking customers (on twitter, I believe) who would be interested in the device on their network. Seems like they listened.

Would it still be the same penta-band GN? If it's just AT&T bands that also doesn't help me.
EDIT: Reading the FCC filing suggests their GN only supports 1900/850. European version it is. Damn you Ma Bell.

The FCC only has to worry about the bands that will be used in the states, which is 850/1900. No reason why they'd make a specific version with a quadband radio to only work on AT&T and not T-mobile. Its more expensive than just using the current pentaband version that's available and putting an AT&T battery cover on it.

I'll give it two weeks. If it doesn't come to the US in a T-Mobile friendly version I'm getting myself one for the holidays from across the pond.

Didnt the GSM pentaband version get approved by the FCC a week before the Verizon LTE version?

I got mine from Negri. But I'd probably go with Expansys-USA, as they apparently have better repair policies. Use ebates for 1.5% off. There's also a $20 coupon floating around.
On cybermonday ebates had a 6% back coupon with them! Was too iffy to pull the trigger then. Damn.

As the article says, just because it works on bands here and is passed through the FCC doesn't mean it will be sold here. Any phone that could be used on a carrier here needs to pass the FCC. The i9250 is the version being sold overseas right now.

Buy from UK
I think if you cant wait, you should get it from handtec or clove. they ship to usa and their prices dont include taxes for shipping to usa (i think, from what i have read and seen). the price is £445 including shipping, which is less than 700 usd.
i dont think it would release in usa for less than 649 (the same as the iphone 4s 16gb), then u have taxes etc.
plus who knows when is the unlocked version releasing.

Why can't Google just sell it like they did with the N1?

But they sold the Nexus S for $529 just fine unlocked this time last year. There's no reason why the 16gb Galaxy Nexus needs to be over $600 USD unlocked.

Because from pretty much every angle, the Nexus One sales tactic was a failure. They partnered with Verizon this time to get bigger sales and exposure, and because of that we're not seeing it sold unlocked unfortunately.

True, but the carriers are nothing but a b*tch in the US. The Europeans have had this phone for three weeks now.

Actually, two different GSM versions have passed through the FCC - the pentaband international version, and a version with only AT&T HSPA+ bands, see here: http://www.slashgear.com/galaxy-nexus-visits-fcc-again-but-with-att-bands-02199735/

walmart.com got this deal too.
Is this legit, if so I am taking mine back today and just ordering from here.
Has anyone received it from this store yet?

and what tmob plans do you have to buy? phone & data prices? 2 year contract?
So, we can´t just buy the phone without any contract like in Europe?

We can't, but we have one massive advantage over Europe. Actual plan costs. We have one of lowest price-per-minute ratios in the world. Japan is another that has similar costs to the US. So, while phones here are more expensive, voice and data plans are cheaper.
$200 a piece from Wirefly, got one for me and one for my wifey Due to arrive on Monday and I can't wait for that big beautiful screen! Looking forward to using NRG's rom on the TP2 as his were the only I like for my Fuze.
Looks like it is now up to $229 with a 2-year extension

Really? You want to go with that? Canada, the US, and Spain are THE most expensive countries for cell phone usage.
Check this out:

According to that post the US equivalent of an $11 dollar plan in the Netherlands will run around $53 in the US (don't know which carrier but yeah).
Yes, you CAN buy a TMo TP2 without a contract (though still locked), for somewhere between $500 and $550. Alternatively, the unlocked US Edge-only Euro version ran about $720 (minus VAT) when it first debuted.

I saw that headline before, but what I'm curious about is whether they compared apples and oranges--for example, did they compare subsidies? Someday I'll actually read the source material and see. Not today though.
They don't take into account subsidies.
My point was that gehzumteufel said that the US had among the lowest plan costs. Which according to that is just not true.
Subsidies do soften the blow, but only if you're buying a new cell. If you're the type to keep the same cell for years (maybe you're an environmentalist, maybe you just like the model) the plan prices just seem expensive as they're the same price whether you get a new cell or not.
Personally as I'm on pay as you go/prepaid, I always pay full price, so the plan prices are important.
And yeah, the US has the TP2 for less than the European price. I am actually considering getting the US version, but then I'd have to find a way to unlock it...

Bell/Virgin taking pre-orders

I know BB and Futureshop are taking pre-orders today, but so are Bell and Virgin. So I decided to call in and pre-order since it wouldn't let me pre-order with no-term.
Well it turns out I was eligible for some data-discount. I expected to pay the full $649, but am only paying $235! Pre-ordered, shipped to my house. Lovely! Now, I wait.
I see where Bell and Virgin Mobile are selling the GN off contract at $650.00 Canadian (approx $628.00 US, using yahoo currency conversion) for shipping around Dec 7. I could not find the GN on the other 2 sources that you mentioned.
Depending what happens here in the US in the near future, this may be an option for me, instead of ordering from Europe.

This what I am considering. I am on Tmobile in the US who will likely not sell this phone, so this seems like a good option for me. I am going to wait until we get closer to Dec 8 before making a decision. A lot could happen here in the US by then.
I went to my local Bell store today on my lunch break with the intention of dumping Rogers to become a Bell customer and pre-order the Nexus. Well, they didn't even realize it was officially up for pre-order today. They said I could go online and enter my email address to get notified for more info (which is what the Bell site had until today).
Then they said they could write down my name and call me if they got some in stock. I said I was hoping to actually sign up with Bell and reserve a phone, but they wouldn't even sell me a SIM card without a contract and come back for the phone later. I was completely willing to become a Bell customer, but they didn't seem interested.
I should note that we deal with this Bell store at my work and they are not known for being too bright, so I honestly wasn't expecting much. One of them was a kid who seemed to think he was in charge, and the other was a woman who was indifferent and apathetic to the point of frustration. I'll call or go to a better store, but I thought I'd share this ridiculous experience

US Buyers.. Which retailer did you buy from?

I'm just curious as to where you might have bought it from. Expansys? Handtec? Clove? I've heard stories where people have to pay a big amount of money after it gets into the country, like customs fees and things like that. Expansys is $749 but it almost seems like the best bet since they ship from the US. Any suggestions US buyers?
Negri: https://negrielectronics.com/samsung-i9250-google-galaxy-nexus-black-unlocked.html
plus theres a $35 off coupon you can find online. they have free ground, but all their other shipping are more expensive than expansys.
I bought mine from Expansys. There was some ups and downs in the begining, but in the end they were great! Their US GM (Cory L) is active in the Expansys thread now, helping people with problems, and letting us know what is going on with shipments, ect. Can't ask for much more. There was a $20 coupon floating around, not sure if it's still active.
I picked them cause they have a US branch here, in case I ever have to deal with the warranty.
Earlier today someone found out that Newegg has them in stock - or so it says. Have no clue if they are imported or not (UK ones have 2 year warranties). It lists the manufacturer site as www.samsung.com and not the UK location so

Just pulled the trigger on it from Handtec. $704 CAD shipped. Seems to be the cheapest option out of the bunch.
Handtec. It was slightly cheaper when I bought mine though, I still think it's the cheapest option.

heh.. i was on T-Mob for the longest time but after seeing the LTE speeds in action & jumped on while they still had unlimited data it's the best mobile broadband ever. i can download a 1GB file in about 5 minutes.
on the downside though, i'm paying roughly $20 more then i was on T-Mob and have less minutes. if AT&T or T-Mob were anywhere near as fast as Verizon(in my area they are very slow compared to Verizon) & had unlimited data also i'd consider switching.

I would go with Expansys also for the same reasons as the others. already in the US & easier to deal with warrenty wise.
I'd go with negrielectronics.com tbh. While they may be more than anyone else, sadly enough they were the only one's from London to the US to never BS me about stock, and they handled my order in a professional manner. The same cannot be said for others that have been mentioned in this very thread.
The Android figurine they send out is a nice touch too.
As I wrote in the other thread, I too went with Negri last night. An hour and a half after placing the order I got an e-mail saying it shipped along with the tracking number. Pretty damn nice if you ask me.

Pre-purchase questions

Im a little late getting this phone, could be this 16th that i order it, could be March, obviously im pulling for the 16th.
Now I've been loading Negri's site everyday to see the current price of the 16 GB titanium silver one, as thats probably going to be the cheapest.
now i see they also sell the "Canada version" >Seen Here<
And im wondering the differences from UK version? and why its cheaper? import taxes less?
Also: What do you guys think the white Galaxy Nexus will be when it is launched? and how much do you think it'll drop the titanium/silver version too?
Probably been asked before, but now im asking again.. sorry

Now I've been loading Negri's site everyday to see the current price of the 16 GB titanium silver one, as thats probably going to be the cheapest.
now i see they also sell the "Canada version" >Seen Here<
And im wondering the differences from UK version? and why its cheaper? import taxes less?

I have the device. Its from Canada, not the UK, so they got a better deal on them obviously and are able to sell for less (got a better wholesale price and saved on shipping probably). I also think they're saving because the charger in the box works in the USA, whereas with the UK version they had to include a USA charger separately.
There are a few small coupons rolling around that can take $10-$20 off that price also. And standard FedEx shipping with Negri is always free.
It is not yakju, it's a yakju** variant (updates a couple weeks behind, read up on it). I flashed mine to yakju 4.0.2 right after I bought it no problem. Everything is great.
Also: What do you guys think the white Galaxy Nexus will be when it is launched? and how much do you think it'll drop the titanium/silver version too?

It'll probably be around $675 if I had to guess. They can't make any promises. you'll find out in a week. I had it on pre-order at $680, but it just wasn't worth it when I got my Titanium from them for $565.
It won't really effect the Titanium price. They're separate items and the white one is just more expensive because its new and exclusive. You'll see price drops of the Titanium regardless of the white being available just because its getting older.

All i9250 versions are pentaband. I'm using mine on T-Mobile US just fine.
Awesome. So I just might go for that one, since it's cheaper, and the white doesnt bother me, it would have been nice to have, not for the money tho. THANKS!

4G???
Sellers are advertising i9250's they say will work on GSM 700, AT&T's "4G" LTE service. Can this be true, or false advertising?? Uh, never mind. Did a search, should have known better. Guess HSDPA+="4G".

LTE and hspa+ Are both considered 4G.
The I9250 version only supports hspa+. Verizon one is LTE but only works on their network.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Thanks, zephiK. Trying to get Negri to answer me as to how long before the CA version is back in stock. Currently shows back ordered.

They did say it was a limited batch. Who knows when they'll get more.
They dropped the other version down to $622.50.
Yup, just pulled the trigger!

[Q] Lumia 900 Unlocked Price?

I've read that the Nokia Lumia 900 is supposed to be $450 unlocked, but does anyone know where I'd have to buy it from to get it for that price? Everywhere I look, they have it listed as $200-300 more than the MSRP. From that, I'm assuming that by "unlocked," they really meant "off-contract," because I'm pretty sure AT&T is selling it for either $450, but they'll definitely keep you locked in to their service.
I figured if anyone knows, it'll be the fantastic folks of XDA. If I have to, I'll just buy the AT&T version, but Paul Thurrott from www.winsupersite.com told me that unlocked, unbranded phones are supposed to get updates directly from Microsoft, so if possible, I want to buy it completely unlocked.
I'm currently aiming to buy it from Expansys, but they don't have a price listed yet. I've heard good things about Expansys, but if they have it ridiculously marked up, do you guys think Microsoft Stores will be selling unbranded versions? I'd bet anything they'll sell for the $450 that was announced.
EDIT: Also! Do I need a new SIM to use 4G, or can I just cut my current SIM down to size and activate 4G on the AT&T site?
I've heard from others it will eventually show up on the MS store unlocked/unbranded. No idea when though.
I'm also looking for the same thing except in Canada it's a bit of a tougher find a place that ships here. So far, like you said they are all a few hundred more. Def not worth the price just for unbranding.
If MS is going to sell 900 the same way as 800 its going to be a pain. Right now you can only buy 800 as a part of the bundle. Those extras are nice but I really want the phone only.
I think a price of $450, unlocked, is not correct. No commitment, yes. Unlocked, no...not at least until the rest of the world gets it.
AT&T has an exclusive window. I believe the iPad launch ate into that window. You should be able to see more launches, and more variants near the end of April , into May. There is even speculation that T-Mobile will see the 900 sometime after June.
But unlocked , no commit, for $450. Not thinking so....yet.
Thanks for the input, guys. I'm not buying the phone until April 30th anyway, so hopefully by then, the unlocked models will be available.
On a side note, I just went in to an AT&T store and they let me play with a Cyan Lumia 900, it feels soooo awesome. Only issue I had with the Cyan is that the SIM door is black, not Cyan.
Also, they answered my question about the 4G SIM, I need to get a new SIM with 4G.
450 price is no contract but not unlocked. It will still be locked to AT&T, but you get unlock code from eBay. And Microsoft store is not going to sell them unlocked in the future as well. The only reason they are selling the 800 unlocked is because it is not available thru any carriers in the US. They won't go against the US carriers and sell them unlocked in the US.
If you want unlocked out of the box check out websites like negrielectronics.com or expansys-usa.com.
I'm looking at Expansys, but the reason I want an unlocked phone isn't to use it on another carrier, I'm perfectly happy using it on AT&T. I want it unlocked because unlocked phones get updates directly from Microsoft.
Although, have you tried the unlock code form eBay thing? That sounds interesting, I wonder if it would work the way I want it to...

The phones with AT&T branding doesn't get updates directly from Microsoft even if they are unlocked. What you are looking is for unbranded Lumia 900 which is not available now. The only version available on April 8th is the AT&T branded version and even websites like NegriElectronic and expansys are selling the AT&T ones but with sim unlocked.

Thanks, that answers my question. Any idea when the international launch is? If it's not far off it might be worth waiting...I think the Rogers version is launching on the 8th as well, so maybe it is the 8th worldwide, with a US exclusive for AT&T, not worldwide.
Can someone explain early termination to me? Because surely I'm missing something here. Att charge 350 for cancelling early, so if I get the phone for free and sign up for the contract, then immediately cancell it, will I get the phone for 350?
I believe so, but I'm not sure. You'd have to pay for the first month and the activation fee, probably, and I'm not sure if they'd take the phone back or not. Activation is about $35, I think, and the lowest end plan is probably around $60, so that'd total around $445, plus tax, so you're probably just as well off to buy it off contract.
Ah, that's right. Activation fee and 1 month of service, forgot about those.

be careful in how you think about this. International release does not necessarily mean unlocked or unbranded. The Rodgers launch may mean a Rodgers bra ded and locked phone. I read that April 22nd is the international launch day, but the unlocked versions won't see a y light until at least May.
I may be wrong, but all I'm really saying is do not assume. Check the branding and locking before you buy.
Well if this is going to be the unlocked/unbranded price in the US, you can count me out: http://www.nstore.it/nokia-lumia-900-con-windows-phone.html
EDIT: That's roughly $800 USD.

oh I think that price will change within the month. But still, unlocked, unbranded is always more expensive by $150 USD or so...usually. All we can do is wait and see.

Yea, but apparently the unbranded one will have HSUPA or whatever it is instead of LTE, so it looks like I'm stuck buying from AT&T. Oh well, XDA is usually good about getting updates out super fast, I'm running 8107 on my Focus, which is supposed to be at 7720.
Even these guys on eBay are nuts.. Selling the L900 for as low as $575 PLUS $50 shipping or as high as $800. Do they not know this phone is going off contract for $450??
I was willing to pay an extra $50 over the MSRP but not $150-$175..

Thats called " cake and eat it too"
If you wait a few weeks, you should see a difference. As long as AT&T is the only one selling anything, premium pricess will occur. By the end of the month, the unlocked versions will hit the market. Amazon and other sites will get it, and competition takes over. If you want it now, you pay, no pay= want it later.
Amazon is now selling ATT version for $499 (back ordered). So that is not unlocked right? If it's not unlocked, how hard is to get it unlocked?

No its not unlocked. Amazon might sell the unlocked versions, but they are pretty good about clearly lableing it as unlocked. Of course, you would notice right off by the higher price.
