Thank you. I think i do have basic linux skills and will take a look at this thread

On Ubuntu I used it's multiple screen function. You can scroll with ATL+CTRL+arrows. So I opened explorer in one screen to see content of my phone and on the other screen opened folder I want to copy. Fast and easy.
W7: It has a great embedded explorer as shown on the pics above no need for additional software imho

I've read people saying you can if you have at least Windows Media Player 10 installed, dont know if it's true though. Make sure you have all the latest updates.
I do recommend you upgrade for Windows 7.

I've made a little search on Google and it seems you just have to install the mtpfs package to make it work (sudo apt-get install mtpfs).

Nothing on Win xp
windows 7 no problem
mac osx no problem with file transfer
ubuntu, mint, and so on... not so easy!!

No xp users?

For Mac I use android file transfer.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

I don't know if I'm too late to be of any use but PTP works out the box on Ubuntu.
Edit: I lied, that is rather primitive. Back to 'adb' for now.

It worked for me using Windows XP.
The first time it did not work for me and I looked around and found some people thought their stock cable was the problem. I thought I'd have to go buy a new one, no biggie.
Today I opted to charge my phone while working and lo and behold I had success! I copied files back and forth, no problem. Same cable, same computer.
Try again?
There was no real difference between the two attempts. The first time I opened up 'Internal Storage' it was blank, any drag and drop was met with the invalid cursor. I refreshed, nothing. The next day, after the laptop was asleep, no problems.

There's an old app called XNJB for Mac OS X
I found an app today via Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol
Its called XNJB - it's amazing that it actually works (kind of), considering it was made for MP3 players years ago...
I'm going to keep looking at it- but already it has more (native) flexibility than that of Android File Transfer - keep in mind that that flexibility doesn't actually work (yet).
I can't believe that Android File Transfer is all they gave to Mac Users OTB - it's such crap, reminds me of the various Blackberry tools back in 2004.

What about FTP?
If you have Wi-Fi at home you can use the free, open source app File Expert.
It's a really great file explorer for android and has an option to turn your phone into an ftp server. If you're on Linux you can use filezilla or whatever to log into your phone and transfer files. I'm on windows and find the wireless transfer to be much more convenient than using a cable. Transfer speeds are great too.

HTC Audio Manager

I've seen a lot of posts regarding people using an extracted version of the HTC Audio manager, but most are for people using PPC. Since there is a version of this on the new Vox (smartphone) it seems it shouldn't be too tough to get it working on the Excalibur.
Anyone had any luck?
Thanks.

So...what's the big deal here?
I downloaded & installed the player. It seems nice, but what advantage does it have over the Windows Media Player and/or TCPMP? I just started using it, so one advantage over TCPMP that I did notice is that if I get a phone call, it will stop itself, so that's pretty cool.
Is there some specific feature that people were looking for in this app?

It's more on just a simple player. An added feature is that you can set a song As a Ringtone thru that App..that's it.. i don't see any advantages of this over CorePlayer/TCPMP and Windows Media Player.
EDIT: And yes, it stops when someone calls, and gets back once the call has ended.

hey does anyone know if there is a way to make this a home screen plug-in its much more useful then WMP
I've installed it on my S621, and upon startup it remains active for approx. 15 seconds, then automatically shuts down - anyone else experience this?
Thanks.
The more I use it...the more I like it
You know, I'm really liking this little app the more that I use it. It's just clean, simple & straightforward. I did have it freeze up on me once, but that was probably just due to memory leaking away around the app, moreso than by the app itself (Welcome to WinMob!).
Nice find.

BackTrack 5 ARM (with GUI via TightVNCServer)

Backtrack (http://www.backtrack-linux.org)
Backtrack-Linux.org, home of the highest rated and acclaimed Linux security distribution to date. BackTrack is a Linux-based penetration testing arsenal that aids security professionals in the ability to perform assessments in a purely native environment dedicated to hacking. Regardless if you’re making BackTrack you Install BackTrack, boot it from a Live DVD or thumbdrive, the penetration distribution has been customized down to every package, kernel configuration, script and patch solely for the purpose of the penetration tester.
Here is a guide to getting ARM Backtrack Running on the Xoom (tested on Wifi Only Version, running 3.1)
After much frustration I have gotten the GUI part of the backtrack 5 arm release working with the Motorola Xoom.
This has only been tested to work on the Xoom. But it should work just fine with any other device that supports linux, and should work especially well on anything with a dual-core processor (G2X, Atrix, etc.)
Pre-requisites:
- Rooted Motorola Xoom
- androidVNC from the Android Market
- Terminal Emulator from the Android Market (which you should already have)
- Backtrack 5 for ARM with Gnome downloaded and setup (check the README file, and follow the instructions.)
Link: Backtrack 5 http://www.backtrack-linux.org/downloads/. This tutorial will assume you put Backtrack 5 in the folder /sdcard/BT5 like the README says.
Launch the terminal emulator and enter the following commands:
Code:
cd /sdcard/BT5
su
sh bootbt
BackTrack will start up in shell. You will get a red line that says "[email protected]:". To verify if you type:
Code:
ls pentest
It should echo back the folders in pentest, stuff like 'backdoors','database',etc.
At this point enter the following commands:
Code:
export USER=root
vncpasswd
When you type in 'vncpasswd' this is to the the password for the tightvncserver. Since I only connect locally I just use 'qwerty' for my password, and then confirm the password. [Edit] Apparently you can skip this step, as the default password for vnc is simply, 'toortoor' (root backwards, twice).
When it asks if you want to create a view only password just type 'n' and hit enter. After you have your password setup for vnc start the server up.
Code:
tightvncserver -geometry 1280x800
When this happens you will get a message confirming that "New 'X' Desktop is localhost:1" and a bunch of other random stuff below it (it isn't important unless there are errors listed).
At this point, press the "HOME" button on the Xoom and then open the application "androidVNC".
-In the "Nickname" box, you can name it whatever you like.
-In the "password" entry, use your password (mine is 'qwerty').
-In the "Address" box you can type in localhost (or leave it blank).
****Change the port from 5900 to 5901.
[Edit] TightVNCServer uses 5901 by default, but if you are having connection errors it may have changed to something else. View the TightVNCServer logs (which I believe are under /root/.vnc/, do an 'ls -a' and a 'nano logfilename') to check to see what port was in use.
I also recommend setting the color-depth to 24-bit. After that press the "connect" button, and bam! You're rocking Backtrack 5 on your motorola xoom!!
You're welcome to repost this on other message boards of on your website, please just give me credit though. Thank you and enjoy!

It would depend on if the BT developers provided a driver that has monitor mode enabled. I have it installed but haven't investigated that yet. I do know that tcpdump is on the box, so at least you can monitor your own web traffic.
OP: You don't necessarily need to change the vnc password. It comes with a default password of "toortoor"
As an aside, I'm going to spend some time this week/weekend looking into getting this to run natively. I'm doubtful that it will work but you never know.
I do know they are using Tiamet 1.3.0 as the kernel they are running, so it's possible that this can be done with a good bit of work.
There is a slight error in your commands I believe. To change the VNC password it should be vncpasswd rather than vpnpasswd.
Port for me was 5902 btw. I was stumped until I looked at the tightvnc log.
Monitor mode does not appear to work and maybe some things have changed since Backtrack 3 but I couldn't locate aircrack-ng.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Thanks for this. Going to try it on my nook color tomorrow. If it works, ya mind if I x-post this in their dev forums?
The command should be vncpasswd.
also BT image already contains startvnc as a command which will start the vncserver for you.
I am working on porting BT image to Xperia X10 (thread marked in Sig.)

I haven't tested it on anything else yet, but like launching "Ubuntu" from chroot, it should work as long as your device has a fast enough processor. The only other phone I have to test this on would be my nexus one, but I haven't gotten around to actually testing it out yet. This installation cannot hurt your phone any, so feel free to give it a shot and post your results!

I really hope this arm distribution starts to take off, as I use the x86 all of the time on my laptop, and it would be great to have a completely functional tablet version... but they won't keep developing it if no one uses it.
i have this installed as well.
to answer the above, this only works on the xoom and the atrix. it could work on other tegra 2 devices, but is unknown on stability and support. it was made pretty much for the xoom.
also, you cannot do any wifi attacks or injections, just the nature of the beast.

[Q] Windows 7 Mobile Standalone Project

Ok, so Wisbar Advance Desktop is great for making a Windows 7 theme, but for me there just aren't enough options to actually do a great job in imitating the Windows 7 OS. So, I was wondering why nobody has made a standalone app of Windows 7 for windows Mobile?
If I had the knowledge, I would program one, but I can only make graphics in photoshop.
In case of confusion, I don't mean a port as I know that is impossible, but a recreation of windows 7 using images, sounds, scripts, custom apps that windows 7 app would understand and run within that program would be the best thing windows mobile 6.5 could ever see .
Any views on this??
Obviously, it would be a fairly big app, no bigger than running wisbar advance desktop with a theme installed though, but the app could be cooked into a rom with all the other crap removed so there's lots of memory for windows 7 mobile to run.

Hi but that is a Windows Phone 7 theme, not Windows 7 Mobile. I've made a quick first screen shot of how Windows 7 Mobile would look at a WVGA resolution:
{

}
Windows Media Player running - This would actually be a custom made app using Windows Media Player graphics/ skin (windows 7 style) using coreplayer API scripts to have the full functionality as coreplayer such as wider format support. The app would be made to overlap the windows 7 mobile app interface to give the illusion that Windows Media Player is running on the desktop .
This would give a true feel of having 'light weight' windows 7 OS on a mobile device.
If you hold down with your finger, you can access the menu just like how it would look on windows 7 and put the video in full screen. I'd love to be able to use the desktop as a go-between for switching from one app to another such as to winamp or a file explorer.
You guys probably think "why don't you just buy a 4 inch tablet running windows 7??" Simply because, the full windows 7 OS doesn't run well on tablets and isn't optimized for touch.
As you guessed, I'm a windows freak, and not a windows mobile fan lol. Please if anyone can shed any light on this idea, please give your input. I'd be interested to know how much it could possibly cost also (any problems with this moderators, feel free to edit).
More images to come shortly.

Remote desktop is cool, but you have to be on wifi network or 3G in order to use it and also your remote desktop (your PC) would have to be free and have noone working at it. Besides, windows 7 just isn't practical to run on a small screen as you can only see a 10th of the desktop area whereas a mobile version would be optimized for a small screen. A theme just doesn't give the same feel as once you fire up an app on the phone, you're back into the windows mobile interface so you're no longer in a windows 7 desktop. Unfortunately, it seems this has always been the case for wisbar advance. Of course, you'd have to create modded apps to run on the desktop. Only one which already exists is winampaq and works very well but don't have windows media player.

What went wrong? I've just been looking at a ROM with 145MB free RAM, plenty of space for a stripped down win 7 to run in replace of the WM start menus and grids etc. Then all it needs to run over the top of it are the well known familiar apps such as WMP window image using coreplayer scripts replace the need for coreplayer, a yahoo messenger to replace palringo. It's been tried before?

I don't know why there's an app since the built in functionality is already really good.
After you've read the blog entry you will (or "should") understand.
If you don't, then you don't need the app.

don't know what the big deal about this is either. At least they aren't saying "if u want our services buy our devices " like google is (still no google apps on wp7) and there are many wp7 users who want this, there are also people on android who want easier access to hotmail or windows live messenger and there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm betting that with Skydrive seeming to be a big part of Windows 8, that Microsoft really doesn't care what device you use, as long as they can get your foot in the door with Skydrive.

Hopfully you make that decision very soon and post on that forum
In order for skydrive to be successful it has to be multi-platform. Dropbox is where it is today becuase of the widespread support and api for it.

Will it make you less emo? I hope so
Microsoft is late as always. Dropbox and box.net have already given iOS and android users 5-50 gb of storage which isn't tied to a Windows live id. Their apps were out a long time ago.
Microsoft needs to push its platform. WP7 can and will push their services by proxy. XB360 as well, to a lesser extent.

This is pretty sweet. Being both a user of Windows Phone 7 and the iPhone at the same time, it will make it very easy for me to access the photos I've taken with my Windows Phone 7 from my iPhone.
I doubt Apple will be so open with their iCloud?
This is also great for Windows Phone 7 users to be able to share docs with co workers that are using an iPhone.

iCloud and SkyDrive are not the same type of product. It was developed as a storage solution primarily for Mac/iOS users and apps, and not necessarily to be general purpose like SkyDrive and Dropbox. Box.net gave 50gb storage to ios users so most probably took that offer and ran with it. I know I did.
I mean you can't really go in there and browse it like the hard drive the way you can those other products.

^^^^This article is about the availability of the SkyDrive app, not about the "superiority" of dropbox and box.net.
Who said they were superior? I was responding to another comment.

I have tested both versions: WP7 and iOS.
The WP7 version is a bad joke:
- I can´t upload or watch videos (possible on iPhone)
- I can´t open word documents or pdf files (download error and offer to try it in the browser ?)
- Only upload of pictures is possible
Edit:
- not even my in the office hub created notes I can open
What I like is that I can delete files or folders and that I can see all shared folders of my friends on one page.
I hope the app will be updated soon...
I don´t understand either why MS allows better skydrive support for iOS than for WP.

Hm.. Not true.
1) I can open and stream videos and music. Pay attention that the codecs you used are supported by WP7.
2) I can open PDF, Excel, Word... No issues here.
The only thing I currently don't know about is the possibility of uploading videos. I just haven't tried it yet. But I believe it's possible as long as they are still in the appropriate section of the pictures hub rather than in the Zune hub.

Honestly, i couldn't be more impressed with this app. Not only does it use no data since it goes through your wifi network, it transfers insanely fast. I transferred a 200MB wmv file in under a minute. like most of you i have had some MTP issues where things have transferred very slowly, and this was much faster.
Additionally, where as MTP will sometimes load no thumbnails of your images making it very difficult to find which one your looking for, airdroid loads them all.
it also allows you to access your contacts, sms (and even send sms!), as well as full access to the entire internal memory. You can even see all of your installed applications as well as uninstall them (requires confirmation from the phone).
honestly, i'm incredibly impressed with airdroid, and considering it's free, even more so.
just figured since i've found this app so incredibly useful, i thought it would be best to spread it around here.
i'm not the developer or anything like that, i just found it and loved it. don't think i'll ever connect my phone to the computer again.
Thanks! Nice new tool,appreciate it

Are you running ICS? I only ask bc in the market description it says there are some problems with ICS. Any truth to this? With the ratings this app has gotten, I think I have to give it a go. Over 5000 of 6000 gave it 5 stars!

Been using it since I got the GNexus. Great app, haven't had any FC's at all. Only issue (not sure if it's universal) is that WiFi transfers do not work with the screen off for me, but beyond that, its great for quickly dropping in files to the phone. Great browser interface for the most part as well.
@nweaver: considering i'm posting this in the galaxy nexus forum, and i say i have a galaxy nexus, and the galaxy nexus can only run android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, then yes, i'm on ICS.
And yes they say they have problems with ICS, i haven't noticed any. And if you look at the reviews for the galaxy nexus then they're almost all 5 stars.
@Jebus: strange that transfers don't work with the screen off, they work just fine for me. transferred pictures and videos with the screen off. I noticed in the battery that while it's running it keeps the phone awake, for obvious reasons, it's possible that your rom or some app is interfering with it, and stopping it from having the phone awake even though the screen is off.
*edit* Oh yeah 1000 posts!
This looks great. Gonna download it and have a play. Wasn't too impressed with MTP so hopefully this is an adequate replacement. Accessing contacts and texting etc. is a nice extra perk too!
Just one bug so far...
The only bug I've found so far is that I fail to receive the new sms text notification on the web interface and that I have to manually refresh the conversation window - I'm using Chrome. Anyone else have this problem?
Other than that it's a great app - can't believe I didn't come across this sooner!
How is this AirDroid different from MyPhoneExplorer? Not beeing sarcastic just asking a legitimate question.

after looking around, airdroid looks a lot nicer, and runs in the browser instead of a separate app. aside from that they're very similar but myphoneexplorer has some more features for syncing and other things.
personally, airdroid is better for file management because of the simple windowed design, and full working thumbnails, and that it works right from your browser, so no extra application to install. aside from that, MPE is better in a few ways. i think it'll come down to your preference and what you need.
personally i'm using this for moving pictures and other files too and from the device since i can actually see thumbnails through this and not through MTP.
I was not aware that such things existed. My compliments to the chef!
I'm also a big fan of this app. A little slower than USB but much easier, especially in Linux. Two things I'd like to see though: Downloaded files, are in a generically named zip file, it would be nice for them to at least have an appropriate name. The other thing that would be nice is a Chrome and Firefox extension to automatically connect, so we don't have to type in a different address every time.
I was having major problems with MTP and downloaded this on my first night with my Gnex.
Amazing and saved me from much frustration. Awesome app!
Cant get airplay to work at all
just says waiting ... tried in IE and Chrome.
@wilbur-force: don't forget to activate it in the phone first. and it works perfectly in firefox.
It runs like a champ in chrome for me
Nook Color ICS Alpha for CM9 & AirDroid
My Dell Studio Win7 64 laptop has not been able to succeed in loading MTP or PTP drivers for my Nook Color ICS Alpha for CM9 from XDA. I was having to pull the SD card to transfer CM9 update zips to my NC. AirDroid saved the day (week).
Thank you!
Also loving this app.
The only thing that bugs me is (and maybe I am doing it wrong?) that when I upload for example a picture to my wallpaper folder on the phone Airdroid creates its own "wallpaper" folder for only the files I just uploaded instead of dropping the uploads into my already existing "wallpaper" folder that I initially selected as the upload destination.
So when I go into the gallery (stock) on my phone later on I have two folders named "wallpaper"
Anyone else running into this?
My "wallpaper" folder is a subfolder of my "pictures" folder on the root directory of the phone.
thanks ill give it a go
I use Websharing. It is a paid app, but let you use webdav protocol. (I can access phone storage as a network share).
Also, I can stop the service. Airdroid 1.0.6 removed this option. Waiting a fix to start using it to decide between webshare and airdroid.
i personally use it on my mac and it's very useful and save my a lot of time.
