[Q]Should I upgrade or wait? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey guys. I bring greetings from the vibrant forums. I was wanting some opinions from s2 owners. Currently I have a vibrant and I'm very familiar with some of the devs here. I have an upgrade available to me. My question is, is this phone worth an upgrade.? Of course I'd root and install a new rom. So with the new rooms, how's the overall performance of the phone? Smoothness and speed? I'm not that worried about benchmark scores. Or would you guys suggest holding off til next year and wait for the next big thing? Thanks.

It's dual 1.5Ghz, what do you think it'll feel like? A droid Eris?
Upgrade, because there's always going to be something new and you'll just post this question 6 months from now

It's nice phone I love it. I had a Sensation but this is pure awesome. just be careful when you choose it and read the issues article and how to look to a good one have a good screen. good luck

Don't upgrade. Something new and better will come out eventually.

Galaxy S II vs Galaxy S (Vibrant)
4.52 inch screen vs 4 inch
Super Amoled + vs Super Amoled
1.5ghz dual core vs 1ghz single
8mp camera vs 5 MP (no flash)
1080p video recording vs 720p
2mp front camera vs ............
4g data speeds vs 3g speeds
NFC vs .............
1850 mah battery vs 1500 (I think)
Dual mic vs single (I think)
Louder speaker vs loud speaker
Excellent GPS vs ...........
The Galaxy S II is definitely worth the upgrade over the Vibrant. The only part where the Vibrant shine is that it has excellent development compared to the GSII and that is mainly because the GSII is a newer device.
I've owned 2 Vibrants in the past and I can honestly say that after owning the GSII I do not miss the Vibrant not even for a second although it was a great phone at the time minus the GPS issues and lack of a camera flash.

*chuckle* ask a question in this forum and your ensured to get at least one honest answer and at least one smart assed answer.
I also came from the Vibrant and within minutes of using the SGSII felt that it is the phone that Samnsung should have made the Vibrant be. The SGSII is much snappier, the GPS works reliably and the screen is just enough bigger that I don't mind using it to do some light web surfing.
Am sure there are some issues (there's a long thread on how bad the screen sucks but I really don't find that issue very noticeable on mine) and there is Samsung/TMobile's history of not being very quick to release updates (we're still waiting on the WiFi calling app which I believe was promised to be available at launch).
Bottom line - it's a hell of a phone and, imho, the best one available on TMobile. The only other phone I might choose over it is the Galaxy Nexus and I'm not going to jump ship to get one...
...whew. Now, go forth and by an SGSII, use it and if you like it, keep it. If not then take it back in the first 14 days and exchange it for something else

I think that was the joke they were making. Although I hate how that is always peoples' response. It's a legitimate question if you haven't been keeping up on what else is about to come out. Not that people knew it was going to happen, but a lot of us were upset when the SGS4g came out right after the Vibrant, when it was announced if someone asked if they should get the phone I think most would agree to hold off.
However in this case I doubt we will see a SGS3 for close to a year since it hasn't been released over seas yet and then we get to wait another 6 months before they finally grace us with it. I am currently trying to talk myself out of waiting or ordering the GN from over seas.

Best Buy has it on sale for $149.99 no rebate!!!!

Very happy with this phone. i previously had a Samsung admire from metropcs which turned out to be totally inadequate .
The admire ran stock gingerbread with no touchwiz which was really its only nice feature. personally, i don't see why everyone complains about touchwiz.. There's no way it slows down the phone to a greater extent than HTC sense with all its bloated animations, and it does have a few useful tweaks.
Id suggest purchasing an sgs2.

Read all the reviews online. One of the best phones out there IMHO.
Thanks for the reply and I've read alot of reviews would just like a little more info I talked to people at Verizon when my mom got her Samsung charge and they tried telling me the epic was junk that it was laggy and bad screen quality. Might have just been them trying to get me to leave sprint though
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
They may have said that because the Epic Touch is on Sprint & wanted you to go with them (Verizon). Oops I see you said that.
Yeah I had Verizon can't go back there money hungry just hoping if I get this phone it wont have the grainy look of my mothers Samsung device can't stand it lol
Well based on resolution specs the Charge & Epic Touch both have Super AMOLED+, 480 x 800 pixels
However the Charge is slightly smaller at 4.3" vs Epics 4.52" & the ppi for the Charge is 217 vs Epics 206 ppi.
One would think that they aren't too far off & should give similar to identical views.
The Epic touch does have a dual core chip so I can't say if that alone gives the screen a better appearance?
I would go on a limb and say the Epic 4G Touch is the best phone Sprint currently has (Dual core does make a huge difference). Even stock it is smooth. With MODs it is even better (especially the battery and tethering capabilities).
The devs are awesome and the future looks nice so far (ICS is suppose to be out soon). My only wish is that the lock/unlock button wasn't on the side, as I loved where the EVO 4G's button was on top. But that is nit-picking and what ever, I adapted (sort of).
The Galaxy Nexus LTE will be in soon BTW, but after that a quad-core phone may soon be on the horizon. I would say make a pro's and con's list of what you want/need and go from there. I upgraded because my screen shattered and if I am paying a small amount to repair it when I had a upgrade... why not.

The quad core phones sound amazing to me and yeah I can tell the difference between single and dual core my Gf has the evo 3d and it seems alot smoother than mine and she's on stock the galaxy nexus looks nice but if I'm going to wait for a phone I would like to wait for the quad core phones to hit the market

Probably not.
i switch from a sgs2 everything is better but you`ll be dissapointend because of: lagg , can`t play latest games smooth , very low volume loudspeaker, display not so HD like its sad ... poor battery ///
the lte is awsome, youll really enjoy it (when you get a signal lol)
the gs2 was the other phone i really wanted on verizon but after using the gnex since launch i really like it alot, ICS is amazing
mine doesnt lag at all, games work perfectly fine for me lol
Just go ahead !
I just switched from the Sensation to this today, it's a beast!
NO lags whatsoever
My best buy yet.
Put it this way. I'll never buy a non-pure Google/Nexus phone again. And I've owned a LOT of phones (most recently an EVO, SGSII (GSM) and Note (GSM).
None of them beat my former N1/NS/GNEX [GSM] (current). None.
That help?

That may just be your device, cause i have not lag(its actually faster than my Epic 4g touch), i can play Zenonia or any of my other games without a problem, for volume just download Volume+ from the market and that problem is solved, the display is amazing, as for as the battery it's great, if your battery life isn't great then get the extended 2100mAh battery it works great i'm gettin 18+ hours with ease
---------- Post added at 01:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:39 AM ----------
i get a 25% discount too, 4gb of data(which i never completely use in a month), 450 minutes, with free mobile to mobile(with any carrier) for $70 a month, way cheaper then what i paid at sprint
Nothing beats a Nexus.....nothing.

OP, don't listen to this person! I had the T989 and made the switch to the Galaxy Nexus (GSM version) and it's been the best decision I ever made regarding a phone. Sure, there is an occasional gaming issue but that's not because the phone can't run it...blame the app devs. The speaker is a little weak but there's apps to cover this issue and also I believe I read the volume has been increased in the 4.0.4 leak. The display is WAY WAY better than Galaxy S II. My recommendation? Do it! You won't regret it.

I just switched from the TMobile SII to the Nexus - actually won it directly from Samsung. So far I love the phone and don't really have any regrets about switching. I actually have more complaints about Verizon's network than the phone itself. After all the hype about Verizon's 4G LTE network, I expected the network to be better. First day with the phone, 4G was down half the day. Also, I am really surprised in the areas that I am not getting 4G, but rather 3G. I didn't really seem to have these issues with TMobile and 4G never went down. With that said, when I am getting 4G it's super fast.
In regards to the phone, I love the amount of development for it. The SGII's development was pretty stagnate. This is a huge plus for me and one of the main reasons I switched to the Nexus. Not sure if I would ever want to get a non Nexus phone again. In regards to the hardware, I would say I don't notice a big difference between the two. Actually, my Nexus is getting higher scores in Quadrant and Antutu than my SGII. I am not a hard core gamer, so take it for what it's worth. I haven't taken enough pictures with the Nexus to compare to the SGII, however, I really liked the SGII's camera and the fact that it is 8MP compared to the Nexus' 5MP.
HTH
I will only list some of the cons of this awesome phone, so you can maybe decide. The gps is dog slow. The battery life is mediocre even with the extended battery. No Google Wallet out of the box. No sd card slot, if that is important to you. People will bash your device bc they are jealous. Otherwise, it is a fantastic choice on vzw.

Well I've actually had both. I started off with the white Galaxy S2 - boy it was a really beautiful sleek phone to look at. I knew that pretty much all the hardware specs were better on the S2 than on the Nexus, but after a while I was getting fed up with not having ICS (the ICS modded roms ported to the S2 just weren't doing the trick.
So I found someone who took my new S2 and gave me a new Galaxy Nexus. And YES- it had all the same problems the previous poster described: lags, slow gaming, very low volume in both the ear speaker and the loudspeaker, and battery drain.
But the lag/slowness and battery drain was resolved after I installed the AOKP rom, and the loudspeaker was resolved after I installed the Volume+ app. However, the ear speaker is still very low and I have no idea how to make it louder.
That being said, the only two benefits to the Nexus is the larger screen, and that it has the latest Android version. Almost every other spec on it is said to be worse than the S2, including the camera. But I'd pick having the latest Android version over a better camera any day.
One other thing that bugs the hell out of me with the Nexus is that the front-facing cam only records video in 720p---it doesn't allow realtime Skype videochat in 720p or even 640, or even 480. The best I got was 320x240 which is the same resolution I got from my webcam in 2001, eleven years ago. Even the S2 transmitted in 640x480 on Skype.

Truth. The amount of flack it gets out of jealously--mainly because of its name--is ridiculous.
Yeh you'll probably be disappointed with the lag compared to the S2, unless you want to root and install a custom rom on the Galaxy Nexus.
There's hiccups here and there with the stock launcher and I agree. A lil disappointed but believe me is not as people make it out to be and hopefully is a software issue.

I would definitely challenge you on that. I just tried it. I installed it and called myself from my computer. I changed it to HR and then the following appears on the Gnexus screen: "HR: Resolution is Not Supported"
I want this phone so bad, its the only rhing I want ever. Its so expensive though. This is coming from a paycheck to paycheck family. I do the bills I would know. We have 316 dollars in bank with 277 to come out. What remains is what we have. Any chance?

From T989 to Galaxy Nexus

Hello, i'm thinking of selling my T989(T-mobile's GS2) and getting the galaxy nexus for $400 unlocked. I wonder if the speaker quality is that bad that it will annoy me, and is the camera good enough? Also for people who bought it from the play store, could you order a white one?

I jumped ship from the t989 as well. Do it, it's fantastic. Speaker quality is fine, it shouldn't annoy you as nothing is wrong with it. & yes the camera is good enough. Gnex is a great device.

I'm in the same situation as you, except slightly different . I bought a galaxy nexus and I still have my t989 and I'm debating whether to sell the t989 or not. My assessment is that the camera us a mixed bag, sometimes it takes shots that are almost as good as the t989, not as good, but close enough for it not to be that big an issue. But facts are facts and 8 MP images with the GS2 sensor more often than not have better detail than the 5MP shots on the nexus. Also Nexus needs optimal lighting most of the time... no surprise since it has an f2.8 sensor and the gs2 has an f2.65. Though in the end, numbers are useless since the gs2 kicked the iPhone 4s's butt most of the time (not always), and that had a f2.2 sensor? So... there's a camera comparison article on zdnet which shows nexus vs lumia vs 4s. Its worth a look.
I as always have concerns about the GPU. When running Nenamark2 it performs at less than half the frame rate of the adreno 220 in the t989. Not surprising since its the same gpu as the iPhone 3gs just over locked. Its confusing since it normally performs so well that I'm concerned whether it will be able to hold up to more demanding games.

Have you done any testing on the radio/network stacks? I'm reading on some forums that the T989 doesn't have proper radios for ATT MVNOs nor for worldwide support.
I just bought the T989 ($300, running 4.0.4), but could still return it for a Galaxy Nexus ($350)..

I came from a T989 too. The nexus kicks that phone's ass in my opinion. $350 on the play store and no there is no white. The speaker quality is great. The camera is really great for 5mp. I expected it to be much worse. You will get slower "4G" though cuz I think the nexus operates on the 21mbps hspa and the T989 uses 42mbps. I still get about 10mbps download and 4mbps upload on my nexus, not bad.. Assuming you are using T-Mobile

Could you be a little more specific? Trying to change my mind about keeping the T989 w 4.0.4 preinstalled....

What would make you upgrade?

For those of us still on a SGSII, no matter what the reason is (no money, no stock, price too high for s3, nothing worth a 2 year extension), what would make you upgrade?
For me I'm hoping that the next Nexus will be the super phone of my dreams AND available for t-mobile.

No beats because they are only optimized for crap headphones. Once you start (I know its not the best quality... but its better than any crap headphones I can buy) streaming to your done up car stereo, that can handle REAL audio quality... then you don't want any help at all.
Just today I discovered lows I never knew existed on one song because I'd never played it in my car.
Not to mention beats are just another brand grabbing money.
Other than that i like it.

At first I thought those were the actual specs, I was like "DAMN I got to start saving money!!" but then I realized you were describing what you want, and now I am sad.....

Money is always the reason.
If someone were to buy my phone for a decent price, I'd upgrade.
Other than my 2 years between upgrades being up, the things that would make me upgrade would be:
Much faster processor (better than Qualcomm S4)
720p non-pentile display
Overall size not significantly larger than t989
2gb ram
Most importantly for me: DAC as good as Wolfson
And nothing missing the t989 has. I'm extremely happy with my S2.

You hit the nail on the head with the wolfson dac. That things kicked SO MUCH ASS with my epic and nexus. Also I'd take a quad core s4 SoC over a quad exynos any day. 10 bucks says quad core s4 ass rapes the quad exynos when released. The dual core s4 krait SoC is the second fastest SoC out behind the quad exynos.

But to answer the question the next nexus will make me upgrade. Having already been an ex nexus s owner I've experienced how much better the dev support was on that device. Worlds ahead. I had aokp on my nexus last year.. with the same exact features aokp milestone 6 has and more. With the nexus you could raise the wolfson dac 5 decibels above its stock setting for some AMAZING sound processing and you could tweak the amoled screens brightness contrast and colors with all with voodoo sound. I NEED that back in my life. Call me insane but I've considered taking the huge performance hit and going back to my old nexus s because of how amazing the benefits are over this t989.

I meant Beats Audio Headphones that plus Wolfson DAC would be awesome.
I'm also talking in the box, you can always buy better headphones, but if i'm paying (600) 200+ for my upgrade then I want the best + as much free **** and features a phone can have!
The only way I'd upgrade is when the new nexus phones comes out ..Google support ftw..screw Samsung and their late releases. As great as their phones are..I can't buy anymore haha. Although their TVs are nice

Personally I am happy with my T989 and am in no hurry to upgrade for at least a while.. This phone works superbly and handles everything I throw at it, and is in no way outdated.
If you are the type of person who has to have the latest and greatest then who am I to argue with you. Go ahead and upgrade
But I'll stay where I am at least for another generation because Is phone still works as advertised
I like my Roms the way I like my women..... Clean and smooth
I know that . Samsung can still make the phone. However, its Google who supports the phone.

Not doing any upgrading until tmo has their lte network up and running... Can't wait to see what kind of handsets they will have for that

Truthfully, this. I know we're all here cause we care about benchmarks and the latest software, but I can't think of anything I want to do on this phone that it can't deliver.
I'm pretty happy with my phone now too. One of my friends just got an s3 & I got to play with it for a while last night, and I can honestly say I was NOT blown away. I ran some benchmarks on it and my phone either came out ahead or VERY close on each test. I'm sure it's probably all due to software, but still. I thought the screen on mine looked better too, honestly. I could see the pixels more clearly on his even though it's higher-res. I'm perfectly happy with the t989's performance, the only thing that could make me upgrade would be a significantly larger display since I'm a size queen, lol... I've heard that the Note will be coming to T-Mo this month, so that's what I'm saving my pennies for
I agree if the nexus came out for tmo I'd hop on it quick!

Nothing.
I don' t NEED the latest greatest, BUT, ONE THING that would make me upgrade, a camera capable of shooting over 200dpi, NOT the 72dpi garbage we're being given.
Otherwise, the SG2 is an EXTREMELY capable phone and they (manufacturers) are just tossing little bones to try and get people to ugprade and keep up with the Jones'..
....forget it, no thanks.
Saving my money.

Galaxy S2 (tmobile) vs Sensation

Which phone would be the better option to buy? I've been asking around and the results are mixed. The sensation is cheaper and I'm on a budget but there is a S2 not too far out of my budget. I am looking for something to last me a year max maybe a little more if needed. which will get me the best mileage and be stable. I don't want something that lags, something with a good camera, doesnt have to be top notch but takes clear images. I'm on an optimus one right now so either is a big upgrade for me. I'm thinking maybe in the year i can save up and just buy the next google nexus phone to come out.
This phone is better for development, the s2 all the way!

S2 hands down

Are you guys saying that because this is a Galaxy forum? I've had some forumers tell me the sensation will be good and to save the extra money to put towards my next phone which hopefully would be the newest killer phone at the time

I have owned both. The screen is terrible on the sensation. Washes out as soon as you tilt it even 5°. It has bad screen refresh rate problems and everything looks blurry when it moves on the screen. The S2 has a great screen, better processor and camera. Go with the S2

so you think its worth 240?is the t-mobile version good enough to last maybe another year or so? It's already a year and a half old and I know its a slower processor than the international s2. I've been doing lots of reading on different phones so I can make my decision. I made a snap call on my optimus t and while its not the worst phone out there, it wasn't good for two years. also if i get it and i do some modding, how much storage is there and is there a good app2sd or link2 to add to the amount i can store on the phone

Phone supports 64 GB SDXC cards, not officially buy just stick and format the card
In the phone and use ICS it higher and it'll work.
Sensation is over 2 years now no? Plus the T989 specs slap it anyway. As for the processor being "better," on the international, I'm not going to say that's wrong, but that's from synthetic benchmarks and even then its only a 5-10% performance difference for the 1.2 exynos, real world application u can't tell the difference, gaming, browsing or anything.

benchmarks don't mean anything to me. it's like specs for a motor on paper. imaginary. I like to know how it actually handles with apps running, multitasking, gaming, streaming and all the stuff smartphones are suppose to do but some can't.I really think I'm settled on the S2, just watching the price hoping it'll go down a few bucks this weekend. fingers crossed.but I like the specs on it better anyway plus i can set up nfc beam so i can start saying my phone can do that, mocking the commercial.

If your buying out of contract then yes this phone is worth 250 in my opinion. Its the best phone I've ever owned and myself will be keeping it until the GS4 or next Nexus device comes out which is later this year.

I have bolth. They are equally cool. Screen looks nice on either... Just smaller on the sensation.. However the sensation has a better screen resolution. As for development I'd say its in favor of the sensation.. It has way more ROMs and kernels available.. And when its juiced on over clock and other performance addons it kills the S2 in benchmarks.. But I prefer my S2.. Its just nicer IMO..
