[MOD] [RECOVERY] [28.Apr.2012] Flashable Recoveries for Nexus S 4G [CWM | TWRP | RZR] - Nexus S 4G Android Development

What is a Recovery?
Recoveries provide you with an easy way to backup, restore, and flash files onto your device (among other things). While all recoveries will easily flash nearly any .zip file, not all recoveries use the same tools for creating your backups. Therefore, backups you make with ClockworkMod will not be usable/restorable by TWRP and vice versa. Choose wisely, or at least realize that you might have to switch back to a different recovery to restore a backup you made in the past.
How else can I access recovery tools from within Android?
The two primary recoveries currently in active development (for the Nexus S 4G at least) are ClockworkMod and TWRP.
If you use ClockworkMod, download ROM Manager from the Google store. Highlights include:
Manage your ROMs via a handy UI.
Organize and perform backups and restores from within Android!
Install ROMs from your SD card.
Install your favorite ROMs over the air!
There are free and premium versions available.
If you use TWRP, download GooManager from the Google store. Highlights include:
Ability to browse all of the files on the Goo site, and download directly to your mobile device.
Receive OTA style updates from your favorite rom developers that have been hosted on the Goo site.
New CyanogenMod nightly build update support
GooManager is free to download here or here; however, we should all support our devs by making a donation to help cover the cost of their bandwidth, hardware, and time.
-------------
Installation:
Download the zip file, put it on your SDCard, and flash it in recovery.
All files are attached to this thread. See below.
CAUTION:
These files can only be flashed on the Nexus S 4G. They are not compatible with the non-Sprint Nexus S. Also, while I have tested all files posted below, I am not responsible for anything that might happen to your phone, your backup files, etc. Flash at your own (minimal) risk.
-------------
ClockworkMod
Versions available below are based on the following files:
Touch-based
ClockworkMod Touch version 5.8.0.2. Note that touch-based recovery is a new feature which was introduced by Koush on 1/31/12. While unlikely to cause issues, you should proceed with caution. The official site is here.
Non Touch-based
ClockworkMod version 5.0.2.0. The official site is here.
Version 5.0.2.7 compiled from Koush's source by snandlal.
j_r0dd's custom ClockworkMod Recovery based on version 5.0.2.3. See his thread here.
Of these non-touch based recoveries, I personally prefer j_r0dd's version because of his improvements to the menu structure, organization of some sections such as wipe or flash zip, and the fact you don't have to scroll through a long list in order to confirm an action. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it. If touch is your thing (and it's mine), give ClockWordMod Touch a try.
-------------
TeamWin Recovery Project (twrp)
Touch-based
TeamWin Recovery Project (twrp) version 2.1.1. For more information, see the XDA thread here or access the main project page here. Note that while this project had gone cold earlier this year, on April 12, 2012, TeamWin announced that the TWRP project was back.
-------------
Archived
Note: These will not work with ROM Manager. In the latest RZR version 2.1.4, restoring ClockworkMod backups is supported.*
Non Touch-based
raidzero's RZrecovery version 2.1.4 beta (last build dated 2/1/12). This recovery has many advanced options available including the ability to compress backups and custom Nandroid backup locations. You can find the XDA thread here and the RootzWiki thread, which seems to be updated first, here. Be aware that version 2.1.4 has not been officially released. If you prefer to use the latest "official" version, download version 2.1.3 below.
Note that the capacitive buttons are used for navigating/selecting. Back and the power button = "back" command. Home button = "select" command.
-------------
Inspiration for this thread (straight up copying in some cases) comes from brainmaster's thread over in the Nexus S forum.
Thanks goes out to Koush, TeamWin, and Raidzero of course, as well as those mentioned above. Thanks to formula84 for letting us know about raidzero's recovery. Thank you snandlal for compiling CWM versions from source.

Reserved for future updates.

Thanks you for making these available for quick safe flashing.
[Q]Are these backup and restore compatible with CWM recovery? I believe they are, just not 100% sure.

They aren't just compatible with CWM recovery... they ARE CWM recoveries.

See maybe I did something wrong before but jrodds recovery wouldn't back up thru rom manager or "manually" I guess... ill try again tho thanks for this

oh, i think i know what you're saying. sometimes, depending on when you flash a new recovery, rom manager won't see it as being compatible. the solution in my experience has been to flash cwm via rom manager first and then update to j_r0dd's version via recovery. should be good to go after that. (just double checked for you too...twice.)

Added to the OP. Thanks for the recommendation. Didn't even know it existed. And...he's a NS4G guy too apparently. I guess he just would prefer to manage all support through a single "Many Devices" thread.

nope. it's not cwm compatible as it creates a separate directory for backups at:
/sdcard/nandroid
because of this, it seemed like it might be amon ra compatible, but the structure is different since in amon ra, backups are stored as follows:
/sdcard/nandroid/DEVICE_SERIAL_NUMBER/
raidzero's doesn't store them in a serial numbered folder.

Kind of tricky CWM use a folder self named with the back up folder inside of that. Tricky but not impossible. GL

[TOOLKIT] Dualboot CM9 and FakeCWM for Sprint SGS3

Link: Dualboot CM9-on-EMMC for Sprint SGS3
The CM developers are rapidly fixing bugs in the CM9 nightly builds, however it might be a while before CM9 is dependable as a daily driver. Thus Team Epic has created this toolkit of CM9-on-EMMC and FakeCWM to allow both developers and testers to rapidly test standard CM9 .zip's. The phone's standard ROM and kernel are intact so you have a stable ROM to fallback on.
The alternate ROM is stored in /sdcard/multiboot/CM9 of the "internal sdcard" storage. Booting the alternate ROM is temporary. Reboot the phone to return to the standard ROM.
FakeCWM Recovery is used to install, upgrade, and manage CM9-on-EMMC.
If there is demand, we can adapt this CM9-on-EMMC method for other SGS3 LTE variants.
Follow Sprint SGS3 CM on Google+ for the latest development news relevant to this phone.

That's what I was thinking. Ah well, it'll be worth using whatever recovery necessary to have the ability to dual boot!
EDIT: Got it up and running. Very nice! Thanks again!
EDIT 2: While restoring from titanium backup the app keeps freezing. I went to the Play store to try and download the apps that wouldn't restore and received an error message saying there was insufficient space. Can you make the data.img larger?
This is BAD @SS
Awesome!
*ninja edit: THNX to the kexec tools above, this CM9 is purring along nicely!
Gr8 set of instructions, no major hiccups so far......SMS/data/phone/email/play$tore/downloads/camera/[email protected], feels good to me!
fun fun fun...........really awesome bit o'
work w/ this, bbelos + mkasick, looking forward to running this awhile as it appears to be pretty solid for a first release on the S3!

mlin, looking at your avatar, I keep thinking/hoping you'll say, "excelleeent" But no, in all seriousness dualboot is excellent! I can't wait to try it.
Not using this, but very cool.
Really cool cant wait for it to be my daily rom!!!
This is really cool, but IMO the nightly is already mature enough to be used as a daily as long as you can handle a few quirks. Way more stable than some alpha/beta stuff I've used before -- even roms based on stock (which is really sad when you think about it.) Amazing how much progress Team Epic has made so far!

I put the setup zip in root of internal sd. Flashed it. Flashed boot into fake cwm. But it did didn't reboot into red cwm. Is this supposed to to happen automatically? Did I do something wrong?

Another thing you can try if fake Red CWM isn't auto-booting: reboot to system, power off + reboot to CWMv5.......flash multi boot file, it'll show the files already configured, then flash fake Red CWM.
Now you can flash your CM9 Nightly (flash GApps0429.zip immediately after for best results.)

You'll notice the Fakecwm has a reduced menu for your safety. This includes no backups/restores until we can properly implement the auto mounting/unmounting of the true internal sdcard.

[Q] Updating CWM

Rooted my (Sprint) S3 a month or so ago. The instructions I followed had me put v5.0.2.0 on it. There is a much newer version, correct?
I'd like to be able to do OTA updates and understand that that is possible with a newer version of CWM, but to get *that* version (v6.0.x.x?), I have to copy the file over via cable, correct?
Thanks.
(I still have the stock ROM)

.img file question
nm
Ok. Couldn't figure this out. Downloaded both versions of the ROMs from here:
http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
I put them in the root of the internal SD card. But they are .IMG files and when I booted into the CWM menu, I couldn't select them. Another web site said to name it "<something>.zip", so I tried. I renamed it on my PC, but I couldn't copy it over to the phone; kept giving me an error.
So I got tired and just paid the money for the registered version of ROM Manager. I clicked "Apply CWM Recovery" or something like that, now when I reboot, it's stuck at "Downloading... Do not turn off target !!"
I'm Googling this, but would appreciate any help you folks can offer. Thanks.
Flash this is Odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1346628&d=1348358996
Or start over by flashing this in Odin https://rapidshare.com/files/3987532545/L710VPALI3_STOCK_UNROOTED(ICS).7z
Odin- https://rapidshare.com/files/18638682/Odin307.zip
Ok. I pulled out the battery before I saw your post. Looks like it's not bricked, at least.
1) How do I tell if I have the most current version? When I fire up ROM Manager, it says v5.0.2.1. Underneath it says both "Current" and "Latest" Recovery are both v6.0.1.2. I think that means I have the latest and greatest of both.
2) If I paid $1.99 for the "paid" version, why do I still see ads?
3) I started this whole debacle because Sprint kept bugging me about a system update and it didn't work OTA. I don't know how to use "Kies Air" and I thought this would help me. Is this right?

You cannot apply an OTA when a custom recovery is installed.
Truth is, you don't really need to update via OTA. You can update your software by flashing a ROM based on the version you want (LG8, LI3, etc.), or you can choose to only update your baseband/modem (baseband doesn't have to match your build), or you can choose to load the kernel of your choice.
Go into the Android Development forum and do some research on the TouchWiz ROMs available there.

Nandroid backup of JB

Is it possible to Nandroid a ROM such as codename android JB or CM10? I tried for codenamed android and didn't quite work
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Did it fail when you were restoring the backup? If so, which recovery were you on? Newer AOSP-based ROMS like those use CWM6 which has a new way of creating nandroid backups. If you're using a non-CWM6 recovery you'll need to flash either the ROM or a kernel with the CWM6 recovery and then restore your backup from there.

That was a great article, good to know stuff. I just installed cwm 6 on my tab2 10.1,the touch version, and it works very well. Was running cwm5 before,. What happens to cwm5 when you install cwm6, do you uninstall one for the other or does it just go over the old version?
Thanks for the info.

I'm not familiar with that device so I can't say, but on the E4GT the recovery is part of the kernel. If you flash a new kernel (by itself or as part of a ROM) you get the recovery that is included with that kernel. It will overwrite the previous one. I believe though that some android devices have a separate recovery partition. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Do you have link to cwm6??

[Q] CWM/TWRP: ROM Preference when flashing?

So, I have looked on the forums for this and have come up empty handed and am unsure if you have to install one recovery over another to install specific ROMs. I have noticed that one catagory is touch wiz and the other is akop or cm10 and I was wondering if you had to install the twrp recovery when flashing the touch wiz or vice versa for cmw. I know specific ROMs that say you should for flash updates and that you can flash the update using cwm over twrp but some do not specify that you have to have that recovery in order to flash a new ROM. Im asking so I dont make a stupid mistake when flashing ROMs just because I want a new one like I have done with the last one I have had. Sorry if this is a noob question. I hope this post will help clarify any differances since I havent found one in search other then what recovery is better then the other.
You can flash from whatever recover you want. Even the ones that say things like "CWM IS NOT SUPPORTED" still work just fine.

Both custom recoveries work fine. My personal preference is TWRP. The touch interface is great and you save wear and tear on the volume and power buttons by not having to use them. Also very easy to rename your Nandroid backup. You can install 1 over the other with no problem. You don't have to worry about the latest zip file if you use Rom Manager to install the latest version of CWM and use Goo Manager to install latest version of TWRP. Be aware that TWRP cannot read your CWM Nandroid backups, so you would need to install CWM again to restore from them.
I don't know if TWRP has been fixed yet using goo. You might want to read this before preceding.

[Q] Searching, but cannot find Oudhs recovery

if anyone knows, is there a later version for the OUDHS recovery for the t-mobile Galaxy S4... and WHERE it's downloadable from!
The one I found is 1.0.3.3 and I see references to 1.0.3.4 and 1.0.3.5 however I can't find where I can download any of those... for the S4.
Rom manager keeps telling me that there is a newer version of the recovery, but every time I update the cwm recovery, it fails using the rom manager naming automatically, and I have a difficult time knowing which backup is the latest and chronological order is impossible using the inherent naming in the cwm nandroid backup without the naming with the rom manager app.
Any information would be very much appreciated!
