[Q] Gallery Photos Darker Than When Viewed in Camera App? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Has anyone else noticed that the photo is fairly bright when you tap the little icon in the Camera app, but then if you tap again and go to Gallery it darkens?
Is it the same as the issue affecting the Galaxy S II's?
Anything we can do about it?
Thanks to any and all for information...

Yep same thing happens here. It's really annoying, everything looks so dull in the gallery app.

bump...
Any thoughts from people more versed in Android/Code than I?

Yes I noticed as well. Looked for a setting in both the camera and the gallery to control brightness, as far as I can tell there isn't one.

Actually it seems to be the screen brightness which is set to maximum when in camera app, and gets back to normal/auto when anywhere else.
A nasty bug, really.

Yeah I have been too thanks. It seems (from other comments and threads) that at least part of the issue is that the Camera app ramps up the brightness for the viewfinder and in the quick view, but the Gallery resorts to the overall system brightness.
I don't know that I buy this though because there are subtle tone and image quality differences. I think brightness is part of it, but something else seems to be going on (jpeg compression maybe?)...

You're right. When I set the screen brightness to max instead of auto, I do not notice any difference when switching from camera preview to gallery.
Not sure if this is a bug or a 'feature' though.

Hmmm I don't notice any tone difference. For me it was the brightness setting.

Agreed I just tried that and it does work better than when I just unchecked auto, shame we can't have the Gallery app scale it up automatically or by default like the Camera. I'd say it was meant to be a battery-saving feature, but I'd rather be able to show off good-looking pics at the times when I wanted to view them.

Outdoor pics are fine (on max brightness), but indoor pics seem to lose a little "warmth" when "darkened" for the gallery, and the "fineness" of the image seems just slightly reduced (more noisy)...
It could be my imagination too though...

Call it a nasty feature, then

I use Llama to automate the brightness. When the camera app or the gallery app is the active application set brightness to 100%. When gallery app and the camera app are not active set the brightness to Auto.
You can obviously add any other apps you might want to have those settings apply to as well.

I would hardly call it a bug. If anything it is smart.
If you are taking a picture in low light, auto brightness is dim, possibly too dim to see any detail. Having the camera at Max brightness ensures you are seeing what the picture will look like, rather than guessing.

Pictures

I realized that after taking a picture and than viewing it in the camera mode the picture looks bright. But when you switch over to viewing the same picture in gallery, the picture now looks darker. Why is this?
I was wondering too. I think it might be because in the camera app the screen brightness is turned to max and in the first preview screen (which is utterly useless and annoying imo) you are still in the camera app and hence max brightness. When you go to the gallery app afterwards, you're reset to your normal brightness which I assume is lower because no one runs at 100% brightness.
Edit: indeed it is. Turn yourself to 100% brightness and the picture remains constant.

adjusting auto-brightness level

do you guys know how to or what apps can change the auto adjust level? and please dont say just manually change it, i like to use the auto feature, its there so i can be lazy.
Settings > display > brightness

You can go to settings> display> brightness and set it to auto brightness, or you can get the app "Quick Settings" it has a bunch of toggles

I think the OP wants something similar to what's in Cyanogen roms. I think he wants to adjust how bright or dim it gets on certain light conditions. I think I saw an app called Luminous or something. Now I'm drawing a blank.

Maybe if you found the file that holds the values, you could pull and push the file till you find what you like?
EDIT:
Try this, maybe this will work. I think this is what I saw once.
Lux Auto Brightness

I think I might give it a try later on.
Juice defender has an option to set the brightness all the way from -80% to +150%. So autobrightness would have a larger (or smaller, if you prefer) range.

just use the notification bar
Hey guys
I found out that if you tap the notification bar on the top and slide your finger left or right, you can adjust brightness as you like. I think that is the easiest and quickest tip I found on this forum. not sure where I found it.. hope that helps..

There is an app i am using that allows you to adjust the levels that the auto brightness use.
Called: LogGraph
it gives you a graph divided by roughly 12 steps of the brightness sensor so 0-12.
you can set the brightness level at each step the default (which i am using) is roughly:
Sensor% - Brightness level%
0-0
10-5
20-10
30-15
40-20
50-25
60-30
70-40
80-60
90-80
100-100

Reviving a slightly older thread here for some feedback.
Lux is a great and well designed app; I've been having issues with it - it doesn't seem to sample from the sensor (light or camera) when it wakes up, even though that is how I set it. I sent an e-mail to the developer, so hoping he can help me out. I also found it hard to understand the "levels" both in basic mode, and the lux/luma in advanced mode. I came from Cyanogenmod (on an Evo 4g) so I understand how the sensor works, but for some reason, whether it be the GS2 or Lux, the sensor does not seem to pick up a lot of variation in ambient light. I can cover up the sensor with my finger and the value that is getting doesn't seem to go below 2.
So I'm still struggling to get the auto-brightness (with an app or with the factory algorithm) to work properly compared to what I was able to get on my Evo 4g w/ Cyanogenmod (which was perfect by the way - once I have it all set up, absolutely perfect auto-brightness).
Actually I edited the framework-res.apk file and that did the trick. I tried lux before but it still didn't work like the default auto brightness.
I'm just sayin!

I'm guessing this is something that can't be edited live or on the fly? It's got to be signed and flashed?
If that works, cool, but I'm totally hoping for an edit I can make live to system files from Root Explorer for instance.

I believe you that Lux doesn't work like the factory auto-adjust...no matter what an app. developer does, you can't replicate the responsiveness of what would be in the framework.
Could you explain further the edits you did and what it corrected? I am a software developer and I can figure out the basics, just was looking for an idea of what you edited in there and the specifics to get me going.
Thanks in advance!

I basically followed what they did here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1235212 to decompile the apk. I made adjustments to the value that represents the brightness under the lowest lighting conditions. I slightly increased the brightness under that value to help mask the blobs under low lit conditions. Hope this helps.

Yeah, saw that last night and just finished. Will probably need to dial in the values a bit to find what is optimal for me.
I'll post a Framework for others to use once I get mine all set. This is definitely the way to go for adjusting autobrightness.

Rear camera too dark

Anyone else find the rear camera almost pitch black compared to front camera? I've changed various settings but it doesn't go any brighter.

Most units have the dark camera. Some have a brighter camera.
The best you can do is adjust the exposure setting.
I just posted in another thread that I had this issue, even adjusting all the setting makes very little difference when using the camera in video mode, picture mode is fine though, no issues with darkness etc.

Sorry I didn't see your thread, yes I have exactly same problem in video mode being darker than camera mode with the rear camera no issue with front one though, my bad I should of stated which mode it was in.
Don't know about the dark only in video mode issue.
What I've seen is most cameras look find in bright rooms, but in dimly lit rooms, everything is very dark. I just figured this was normal for this level camera, but then I saw a unit that was able to have the same image my eye could see, rather than being so dark it was hard to make out details.
That's when I came to the concusion there are different cameras or the same camera with different variances.
I could adjust the exposure in the dark camera to the highest level and get about 75% of the brightness of the bright camera, but never as bright. By bright, I just mean you can make out the details in the scene.
It seems to be more of bug though because it's also doing it on sphere & panoramic modes too, it's like it's automatically setting the exposure to -2 when your under unnatural light. The setting shouldn't be any different to camera still mode as all it does is stitch multiple stills together.

I went back and tested my camera in more depth.
When I turn on video mode, it ignores any exposure setting. Is it possible you have exposure turned up (not necessarily by your own doing) in the camera mode and when you switch to video, it doesn't honor the exposure?
Basically what I'm asking is, rather than video mode being dark, is it possible video mode is "normal", ie no adjustments to exposure, and camera mode has exposure upped up, possibly some change/fix that was made to account for an overly dark camera?
I know this makes no "effective" difference to you, but might explain why it behaves differently in camera and video/stitch/etc. mode.
Sometimes it also goes redish dark in picture / still mode too but that can be fixed by pressing home and then returning to it via recents, you can hear the shutter or lens reset.
4.4 gives a slight improvement, it's lighter now hopefully with another tweaked update it'll be fixed.

Auto Color and Sharpness based on enrivonment luminosity

So, I noticed the screen changes its colors and text sharpness based on the environment clarity. Altough this seems a nice feature for using the phone on sunny days, the effect brings a strange oversharpened effect on the screen text. Not really a big deal, but I don't like it much.
Is there a way we can disable this feature? I've already tried going into "Settings > Display > Contrast & colors" and changing to "Standard", which should keep the contrast constant, but it seems the option isn't really working. I've restarted the phone and it keeps changing the colors and sharpness.
I made a video for you to understand what I'm talking about.

Thats samsung super amoled boosting brightness nits to increase readability, and its normal, it does happen in all super amoled screens including samsung note 8 and etc.
So it cannot be disabled as far as i know its in firmware of display.
But when you are in direct sunlight i think sharpness or color dissortion is not much of a sacrifice to increase readability.
Would it be better if you wouldnt be able to read whats on display ? dont think so.

For a second i thought my display was faulty but then realized its only for better readability. Not that I particularly like this but the sacrifice is worth it. For now haven't seen a toggle for it yet, but I hope xiaomi gives it in the next update.

Are you sure it is a feature of the display itself? Cause the brightness remain constant, what changes are the colors (contrast actually) and the sharpness...
And yea, like I said, it isn't a big of an issue, I just wanted to have control over it, but I can live with it haha.

I had this on my Galaxy S9+ and somewhat annoying under sunlight, though not as noticeable as on Mi 9 SE because of higher resolution and DPI. The only way to deal with it on my S9+ is turn off auto brightness and slide the brightness down to a manageable/readeable level.

Kinda disappointed with the N10+

Don't get me wrong, the phone itself is amazing.
There are just more software issues which are on Samsung.
The always on charging status which will burn the screen
The always on fingerprint while AOD is on which will also burn the screen
Lack of camera resolution settings (actual size of pictures on 4:3 are around 2MB?!?) and pictures are not good as on Note9 or S10
And the feature that I'm missing really much is swipe on fingerprint sensor to drop notification menu down, but on the other hand, face recognition works so damn fast that I don't even need fingerprint.
And speakers could be better, they are dull, without much base.
Hmmm,
I wonder about that possiblity of burning the screen
Yes speakers could be better
But what do you mean no camera resolution settings? I don't even see 4:3 in the options
I wonder if the AOD stuff moves slightly every so often to prevent burn in.
UPDATE: Fingerprint AOD moves slightly every several seconds. I haven't tested the battery charging one since I'm testing my battery usage and SOT so I don't want to mess with my charge cycle right now.

There is aspect ratio on the top when you are in the camera (4:3, 16:9, full and 1:1) but you can't change the resolution (MPxs) in the settings, so I'm just getting low quality 2MB pictures.
The possibility for burn ins is great, trust me.

You're worried about the fingerprint symbol burning in, but not the clock on AOD? Just set AOD to "tap to wake."
My speakers are super loud and clear. But at the end of the day, they are cell phone speakers. You can adjust sound quality by turning on Dolby Atmos and/or changing the equalizer.
As far as swiping the fingerprint reader to pull down the notification shade, why not just set home screen setting to pull it down on a swipe down?

I was wrong about one thing, you can NOT change MPs in settings. But it takes pics in 12 MPs on the rear camera, except the ultra wide angle, which is a 16 MP lense. The FFC is a 10 MP camera. Are you sure you're not talking about 2 MB? As in megabytes, the file size?
And again, if you're not worried about the clock on AOD causing burn in, then the FO scanner won't either. Now the charging status I agree with.

It seems that I do not have resolution settings. I shooted for over one hundred of pictures and not a single one was over 2.5MB, with compression disabled.
About AOD, we figured that both clock and sensor light are moving so that's fine.
About swiping down, that works on home screen only, not in apps or wherever you are.

2.5MB is about right for a 12MP JPEG file. That's the size they are on all my other phones. I have to take pics for work, then compress them down under 2MB to email them. Sometimes I don't even have to compress them, because at full quality they are already under 2.5MB.
And I understand your point on the swipe down. I never thought of that.

That's strange because on the Note 9, pictures were around 4MBs, never under 3.5MB with 4:3 and 12mpx.
My coworker still has Note 9 and we were comparing them, and pictures are bigger on his phone.
There is still hope for both FP sensor light and charging status once they update GoodLock I believe.

I stand corrected. When I check details in the Gallery, my 12.2 MP pics are between 3.5MB and 4.5MB.
That is weird then.
This may sound dumb, but the biggest gripe I have with this phone is the power button being on the left. I'm so used to it being on the right and touching there and nothing happens!
I also wish the power button was on the right side. I loved the phone once I turned on High Performance mode and changed the screen mode to Vivid. In camera settings, I also had to change the rear and front video size to UHD.
What I hate the most about this phone right now is how high the interference is on my daily routine since Wednesday. First night I got it I skipped the gym. Then boyfriend duties are getting neglected. Boss at work is asking why I'm not getting as much done. Smh
