Google Navigation Locking Up - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running Legendary Rom RC2 and Samurai kernel.
The problem i am having is with google maps/navigation. It has been randomly locking up lately. Seems to do it randomly. Sometimes it will navigate fine for 20 or 30 minutes and then i look at it and its locked up (screen still shows map but none of the buttons works- i have to pull battery to restart). Sometimes it does this a minute or two into navigation.
I've waited to post this hoping i could figure out what was happening. I've tred waiting to see if its just a temporary lockup but its not. I am also running juicedefender so i turned that off but it still locks up. I have uninstalled and reinstalled maps and it still happens. I havent been able to notice a pattern of it occurring when there is a signal loss or certain areas or anything like that.
Anyone else having a similar issue or have any suggestions of things to try to fix it? Thanks!

What version of Samurai? There were issues with 2.08. Try uninstalling Maps and redownload from the Market.

Still no luck getting this to work. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling multiple times. Also tried a new kernel (Nubernal now instead of Samurai). Any other suggestions?

How about clearing AGPS data with GPS Test or GPS status and download new AGPS data?

You can always ODIN back to stock if all else fails. I hate google navigation. Google has been sucking it up lately with their new maps release. I get lag GALORE, and have also had some FC's with navigation.

I agree. That is why I use Telenav 7.1. Clear voice and hasn't locked up at all on EI22.

I've noticed this same thing now and again, and I'm chalking it up to the Google Maps updates. I don't think it's anything to do with GB or any of the ROMs, because I'm pretty sure it didn't happen before Google Maps updated their version with the inside maps, which I think was 6.0, but I might be off on the version.
I have a hard time going with TeleNav becaues Google has so many nice features like sharing via email/text the exact location, but I seem to be having a harder time with it locking up (like the OP said, maps still shows) and missing a turn!
How can I get the latest version of TeleNav?

Google just needs to re-release their first version of MAPS. I have virtually zero lag when I first bought my phone, the maps that came installed worked perfect. now its barely useable.
I have tried using Telenav but its just not my thing. I never use GPS navigation anyways. I only use google places. Maybe two times out of the year I will actually use GPS nav.

In the Market, scroll down to Sprint Apps and it is in those. I was shocked today and Telenav actually changed routes due to traffic...first time ever!

I found it in the market (for some reason, I thought if I went that way I would have to pay for it) which was redirected from the telenav website. For what it's worth, I did end up with 7.1.0.7101357 according to titanium backup.

not a fan of telenav but since it sounds like its not a problem with just my phone i might have to get use to it. hopefully google fixes this soon.

so its not a problem with google maps/navigation, at least in my case. telenav does the exact same thing. i tried it out a few times today and it was also very laggy and then eventually it completely locked up. i used gps status to reset the gps but that didnt help. any other suggestions?

Have you flashed the GPS fix or a ROM with it included so you start out with like 8 out of 9 satellites?

anyone else having force closes with Google maps today?

All of a sudden outta nowhere, Google maps has been force closing on me. I searched it on Google and there is a thread over in the Samsung vibrant forums where a lot of people are having the same issue. It was working fine yesterday. Can anyone else check and post your results?
google maps force close
I'm getting force close on google maps using dell streak today after about 10 seconds - cant get past the whats new in google maps screen
+1 on places app

same here ... try uninstalling and reinstalling google maps. It has been working so far for me.
This is weird, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling and changing kernels, and it still is force closing. For some reason if I use WIFI it works fine, if I switch back to 3g, it force closes again...
Same here tried everything even flashing a new rom......
Yes. Really amazing to me that Google can put out updates that force close on their own platform.

I just got mine today. Non-rooted, 2.2 and it FC'd on me before and after the maps update. Sprint reinstalled software - no dice. Since others have it that gives me hope for a software patch and not an exchange.
Me too.
I really needed Maps for traffic today. First I started getting "failed to login." Then I started getting FCs. I was on Fresh 3.0. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Google Maps. I was still getting FCs. I flashed to Fresh 3.1.0.2. I'm getting "failed to login," again. I hope Google puts a patch out.
Looks like they fixed it. Atleast its working for me now.....
I am in Southern California and not only had the F/C with Google all day but also had my phone reboot about 10 times while trying to use either Google or Sprint Navigation. I thought it was my phone as I have had this happen before. It would happen when I would turn the GPS on. Not sure what the cause is, and I am thinking it maybe time to fully root my phone and move to a different Rom. I am just running stock with the fist version of Unrevoked that ever came out.
I got the latitude list open before one of the force closes. after that it worked again

i thought mine was F/C because i was not connected to the data network. to save battery i turn off 3g manually and thats when Gmaps would close on me, then i turned back data and it worked flawlessly.

Yup, I did exactly that, uninstall then reinstall Google Maps after encountering FCs out of the blue yesterday, and now no more FCs.

GPS not working in Google Maps

*Update* January 7, 2012:
After reinstalling the Facebook for android app, I noticed that the problem with the GPS came back with google maps. After a few reboots, I've found that the Facebook app somehow messes with the GPS so that Google maps cannot use it. This is solved either by uninstalling, or never opening the Facebook app, as well as a reboot after every time the Facebook app is used.
Hopefully this will get rid of some headaches people are having with their GPS problems.
December 9, 2011:
Since the new update with Google maps, my phone hasn't been able to keep a GPS signal. When I open up Google maps, the GPS icon starts blinking, and then connects and everything works fine for about 2-3 seconds. After that the icon dissapears, and it goes to what I'm assuming is the triangulation of the cell phone towers, which is much less accurate. Anybody else having this problem? I'm running CM7.1 and everything was working fine until I updated the Google maps app itself. Thanks in advance.

+1.. same issue:
I've encountered a problem with my GPS while running AOSP Roms. (In my case MIUI) The problem is that after a while of using the GPS, I'll wake the phone up and the GPS will get my location, but then stop working/updating location. Sense ROMs seem to work fine with the GPS.
I've tried flashing the stock Sense ROM, and doing the ##GPSCLRX# trick without success. The method simply doesn't seem to work, or have any reaction whatsoever. I can't get the text box to open where you enter the MSL. Has anyone had any success doing this method? If so, which ROM did you use? Was there any special mojo you had to do?
I've also in desperation tried installing various EVO GPS drivers, with no effect.
Anyone know of any fixes?
hmm haven't tried it yet. I just switched back to sky raider (omfg froyo!) from CM7.1 because of the constant force closes and freezes with CM. I'm downloading Inc Deck right now. Will let you know how it works on that, later tonight.
But can't you just uninstall the new updated Maps, and revert to an older version?
I've actually tried different GPS mapping applications, GPS testing apps, and the problem remains. :-/
Well I just installed Inc Deck (AOSP) and Navigation/Maps (6.01) seems to work fine. It locked on nearly instantly, and I drove around several blockes (2-3 minutes) and had no issues with losing GPS lock. Although I was having a problem of zooming into Maps (wouldn't get closer than 2000 feet on scale bar, the scale bar is an addtional lab add-on). Although it seems to be zooming in completely now...I will try to remember to keep testing and give feedback.
Maybe try clearing caches?
update: I've used the newest Google Navigation (6.01) probably 4-5 times in the last 24 hours, I have not lost GPS signal once. Total time running Navigation is over an hour. This is on AOSP Inc-Deck 1.3 stable and latest Incredikernel. So it must not be all AOSP ROMs that are affected.
I've reverted back to the previous version of Google Maps for now. After trying all of the above mentioned tips, nothing seemed to work. Thanks for aall of the help though

I "fixed" this by installing LBE Privacy Guard and blocking Facebook's GPS access. The app force closes when using the CM7 permissions management to revoke FB's GPS permissions, but works fine with LBE. Now, I can leave the GPS enabled, and use google maps & facebook without the GPS getting hung up.
Awesome, I'll do just that. Thanks for the input

You could try changing your gps server. Go to /etc/gps.conf and open it with a text editor. Make it look like this:
Code:
NTP_SERVER=0.us.pool.ntp.org XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com SUPL_PORT=7276
The first line NTP_SERVER should be all you need to change, the 0 can also be a 1, 2, or 3. Also add supl info if not there already.

Problem with Google Maps

Problem with Google Maps where the voice directions always say the same street name. Every turn, same street name. Seems to lock to random streets and only gets fixed (temporarily) when I wipe all Maps data. The directions the GPS displays are correct tho...just the voice doesnt pronounce the correct streets.
Running AOKP and this has happened on several builds so far. Have no tried other ROMs yet.
ideas?
thanks
Install that new Tupac GPS hologram... I'd post it but it has words which would ban me lol

try another ROM?
When I was trying different versions of S Voice I ran into the exact same problem. Google Nav would repeat the exact same instruction over and over. It was strange, because the navigation display worked fine, showing my position and all turns...just got sick on the voice command.
I tried a few things that didn't work, and finally just uninstalled Maps and reinstalled from the Play Market. Immediately started working again, perfectly.

Is my GPS broken? (running stock jellybean) - UPDATE see post 6

Ive had my phone for about 2 weeks now, and the GPS is basically unusable. It takes up to 5 mins to get a lock, and sometimes it just never gets one. Even when it does, its not very accurate.
Ive read somewhere that the upgrade to jellybean caused this, and ive been running JN since i owned it, so maybe thats my problem? Anyone else experience this issue? Anyway to test if its just the software?
Id like to figure it out, so if i have to send my phone back i can. Thanks.
I think the Jellybean connection was more coincidental than anything else, since a lot of people were having GPS issues (on both ICS and JB ROMs) around the time that the JB OTA began rolling out.
Try disabling "Google's location service" in the location services setting and see if that helps. If it works, then try reenabling it and try again. That seemed to resolve the issues of most people who were having GPS issues a few weeks ago.

With it enabled, i just get the huge circle, and it says my location is somewhere in there. With it disabled, i get "waiting for location", and then "your current location is temporarily unavailable."
Anything else i can try. Like i said before it works, but maybe 1 out of 10 times. Even if it worked half the time it would be useless. If i cant depend on it then its really not worth anything to me.
Try this GPS fix. It worked like a champ for me and many other people.

im not rooted.
Ok i just called google play, and asked what i should do. He suggested i do what ive already done (check and uncheck google services, factory reset), both of which had no effect on my GPS. He then told me that a fix should be coming out within the next few weeks, and it should fix it on all devices.
So right now im debating flashing a custom ROM like AOKP or something to see if that fixes it. Im a little worried about doing this to a phone that may be faulty in the first place though. Should i even bother, or should i just wait the few weeks for a fix. If googles OTA fix doesnt fix it back to google it goes.
another update: GPS now works (not sure what made it start), but it still takes forever to lock, and is extremely inaccurate. Usually when you use nav, itll tell you when a turn is coming etc, but the gps thought i was over 100yds behind were i actually was. Even when im in my house, it has no idea where i am, closest it can get in down to 3 houses wide.
Im having flashbacks to my captivate - which didnt work at all - but if a gps only works sometimes and when it does doesnt work very good - then its basically worthless. Am i really going to trust it when i need it?
GPS status from Google play store. Install it and let it download agps data. That should greatly increase accuracy and decrease lock time. You don't need root to use it.
Hope it helps

Please help my resolve my Searching For GPS issue

Hello, I am running an Epic 4G rooted with FC09 Pre rooted rom. (CWM / Odin)
I just rooted a couple of weeks ago as I was thinking it might fix up my GPS issue, but other than the phone being a bit faster and me being able to get rid of some junk... the GPS issue is the same.
Using Google Navigation, unless I'm within a couple of minutes of my destination will go into a "Searching for GPS" mode... then eventually lock up.
The TeleNav software works flawlessly, but I don't get the Satelite views like Navigation which are real handy around here with all the hidden signage and such. I don't recall the Telenav software ever loosing Satellite other than the typical brief hesitation of the tracking icon, and then it catches up.
So far using Titanium I cleared the cache and uninstalled Google Maps. Verified both the Maps and Nav icons were gone from menus where they exited, space recovered etc.. Restarted phone. Installed Google Maps. I did this before it was rooted as well, using the Store as normal.
I installed the GPS Test software. I noticed in only slightly less than optimal conditions like indoors, but next to a south facing window, it will show good signal on 11, 12 or more satellites and show NONE in use. Not sure if this is useful or not because as I stated... Telenav works all the time and seems to even track better than Google Navigation.
I have seen info on a GPS Fix but wasn't sure if it will work on FC09 pre-rooted rom.
Frankly there is a TON of discussion about this phone and the GPS, but I haven't seen any concerning FC09 and also noting that Telenav has no issues.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I love this phone. I'm not sure I understand the advantages of rooting yet, but other than this GPS annoyance, I love this phone.
Thanks in advance.

Did you try clearing and resetting AGPS in GPS Test?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Umm... no I didn't. Well not until now. Didn't know I had that option but found it and did it now. Is this something that will need to be done any time I get the "Searching for GPS" or is this something that fixes the problem altogether?
Thanks
Ok, well good news/bad news. I had the opportunity to test as I just went to the bank, less than a mile away. As noted above I did the clear and update.. Navigation acquired and routed faster than I ever remember it doing it. I actually started IN my house, put the phone in my pocket, took it out of my pocket and put it on the dash in the car. As soon as I started moving in the car it was tracking perfectly.... for about 1/4 mile. While I was waiting at a light, yes stopped... I saw the "Searching for GPS" come on.
For giggles I did a clear and update of AGPS again. At this point I was already at my destination so I entered my home address. Again it found it immediately and routed immediately and I didn't even get out of the bank parking lot before I got the Searching for GPS. I decided to just observe and noted that it was sortof tracking me, but I think that was strictly AGPS and Wifi vs Satellite. When I got home, GPS Test showed 9 Satellites NONE in use. So standing in my driveway I did the clear and update of the AGPS again. It immediately went from none in use to 3 in use.
Again, I have had this issue long enough to know that Telenav would have worked fine. In fact I had a 45 minute ride just the other day at night, that started in downtown Bellingham, WA (City streets) where I had to turn around a go back for something I forgot and received two phone calls. Telenav Never missed a beat. So I'm thinking it's the Google Maps software more than the phone, but at the same time... Google Maps works just fine on my wife's Epic 4G. Her's is not rooted. It occasionally looses sat reception, but she either just exits and reenters the program or turns the GPS off and ON and she's back in business.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my original post. I uninstalled and reinstalled several times before rooting and at least twice since rooting. I used the term reinstalled, sorry for the confusion.
This also included clearing all the maps as well.
I have read about some sort of gpsfix app.. but not clear if it is for my version. Is that an option?
I'm open to all options at this point.

Maybe I'm making an assumption about how to delete all maps and unistall / reinstall the Google Maps program.
What I do is go into the program and clear all map tiles, then exit, go to Play, and uninstall. I also did the uninstall at another time via titanium by clearing cache and then uninstall.
Ok, so something is definitely up with MAPS. This time I cleared the maps, removed it again, insured the apk was gone. Restarted phone, ran gps test and cleared the AGPS and reset etc.. THEN I installed the latest version of Google Maps.
Same thing... I get a little down the street and I stopped to drop off a package at the postoffice and it's "Searching For GPS". GPS Test shows only a couple sats in use... but I bring up Telenav. I ride around the area with a destination programmed nearby, but I keep making turns to try and trip it up.... it stays with me and just keeps re-routing as needed.
If Maps tracked as well as Telanav I'd be a happy camper. While the telenav app is good for the actual directions, there is no satalite view without paying for it (google it's free) and entering destinations is a pain in the butt and not as accurate/quick as google.
Is there some conflict between Google Maps and the Epic 4G ? This is just silly.
