[Q] Has USB host for the Incredible ever been accomplished? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would like to transfer photos from camera to phone...It would be awesome if I could do this while on vacation.

Where would you even find the correct usb cable if the phone could read it. Also i dont know about your camera but mine uses a sdmicro card just like the phone does. So i could just pop the card out of the camera put it in the phone, copy the files to emmc and then pop out the cameras sd and replace the phones sd. If your camera uses a regular sd card you could buy a microsd and an adapter to use in your camera.

So as an answer to my question, that is a... NO, USB host has not been developed for the Inc.
Thanks for the suggestions, but they aren't what I am looking for, not enough speed (sd card adapter) and emmc isn't big enough to help much, anyway. The reason is I don't want to waste money on more high-speed cards, or a computer. I just need decently large space to store, when I get back to the hotel and the end of the day.

Yeah without buying new cards or a pc your outta luck. Unless you have one of those expensive cameras that uses wifi to upload to photobucket or flicker etc.

It's doable yes, but I'm not sure how to test it without the hardware/cabling and software would have to be written for it as I don't think it's built into the API. Honeycomb does support it.
For gingerbread, you need a usb host driver at least and not sure after that.
Long answer, it can be done but so far no one has done it. Short answer, not likely unless someone can do the necessary coding.
EDIT: And, does there even exist a usb cable between phone and camera? Maybe but that's not really my expertise.

I could certainly do the cable myself (might not be pretty), but the driver/coding is what I hoped somebody else had done

EVO as a USB Host?

Hey guys, i don't know if this has been addressed before or not. Is it possible to use the Evo as a USB Host, that is to say, (in my case) connect my DSLR to my Evo and download pictures so i can upload them to tumblr etc or flash drives to get files etc.
or am i just shooting in the dark here?
Possible (check)
Would help if you were well-versed in the art of Linux and mounting

do you have a cable to even connect the two? micro to mini (if its a canon/nikon, if im not mistaken) micro to micro (pentax), beause else you'll need a powered hub according to the first link posted.
I just thought to start researching the status of otg usb and usb host mode on the evo. And to my surprise this is the only crappy thread I've come across. I cannot find an anwser as to if the evo has the hardware to support it. I know that the n1 droid and maybe the incredible support usb host mode even if u need a single its still something I want to know. I would drool over connecting usb flash drives, keyboards, game controllers etc to my evo. Someone else please show interest in this.
i concur. i'd love to be able to plug my ipod/DSLR/flash drive into my phone to upload/download files. i'd be willing to donate to make this happen
The list is endless... MIDI Controllers, extra screens, ethernet, fingerprint reader, wtvr.
Just got the cable today. Checking out these

thanks for the pointers. I'm running cyanogen nightly 8-1... so far, i get:
D/Tethering( 102): interfaceAdded :usb0
from logcat when i plug my hacked (routed dc+ voltage from a nearby
+5v pin to the upstream cable red wire) powered usb hub into this OTG cable.
The EVO charges when i have it all plugged in as well...
Looks like they have this working on the Desire HD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=993152
It's a similar device to the Evo, so maybe there is hope for the Evo to get it?
would like to bring this one back I just got a program called DSL controller it says my phone wont do usb host. Not sure if there is a kernel I need or if there is a ROM I can run etc.
I just ordered the cable I need for my phone and camera. So if anyone knows of a ROM that may do this please advise.
Any one try this yet? Do not want to spend the money till I see some one had it working
I too desperately wanted this to work... After buying the host-mode cable, trying various methods to allow "host-mode" on the evo, and trying a bazillion different combinations of settings - the DSLR controller software *always* gives me a "your device does not support USB host mode" error. I'm afraid this is dead in the water. DSLR Controller does, however, work nicely on my Asus Transformer tablet

SD Card Warning. Edit: there is a fix to this .

So I was in the same boat you are in. Nothing could read the card except for my Nokia n97 mini. It recognized the card as "locked" and prompted for a password. I bypassed the prompt and went to the file manager. From there it let me format the card and it is back to normal. See, Symbian is good for something after all!
PS: I tried the same process with an E71 and had the same successful results. All recent Symbian phones should work as it appears they can handle the encryption and password. The card is now happily back in my HTC EVO.

correct. Once the card is formatted for the phone, it can only be used with the phone.
Huh? You cant even format it after using it on the phone? Maybe Windows will fail to format it but there has to be a way to get it formatted again. They can't brick your card.

No , you can't format the sd card any more after using it in your phone .
you can only use it on your wp7 phone .
and that could be real expensive if you brick your class 6 32GB sd card .
More than likely there will be an app or tool to fix this in the short run. Never say never around XDA.

That would be my first guess.
I guess what is surprising me is for how long the phone has been in preview and in devs hands, why in the hell are so many features that are probably in the phone or are questioned to be in it, not being found already? God the first thing I do when I get a new gizmo is to search every nook and cranny of every option and setting. A good example is this and how NOBODY has tried it yet with a replaced microSD from an HD7, and how long it took for somebody to find a way to add your own ringtone. (Its right there in the Zune Hub!?! Who Knew!?!) lol
Seriously If I had a device at any point before/at the release, I could have easily found answers to a lot of questions that have been asked. Sadly with real life not landing me a job as a website tech reviewer or dev I get pushed to the back of the line. Not to toot my own horn but I really do feel like a fairly high quality QA person. I may not be able to write my own code, but I can poke and play with yours till I find all the bugs and all the features.
Anyone with a loner HD7 wanna throw it my way for test and analyzing purposes until I can get my hands on my own Sprint HTC 7 Pro? I can probably provide some really useful feedback and quality video that could easily rival a lot of these sites.

Little bit off topic, but I consider my self to be a fiddler trying to find out every little option. I truely cannot find anything in zune on how to set ringtones?!
Where!? and How?!
In the tech video somewhere a day or 2 ago the guy said the option was within the zune hub. Of course no showing or saying how. Is there not a longpress on a song or the 3 dots option anywhere you can see?
Sitting stuck in the US really stinks. I wish Microsoft would give me a dang job lol. Need to get in touch with some more contacts.
That's because the setting doesn't exist. You can only use the ringtones that are on the phone right now.

Exactly. Geez, why are people refusing to believe this, it's a well known fact that at the moment you cannot set your own ringtones.
As for replacing the SD card in a HD7, been there done that. Works great, however HTC's WP7 hardware really sucks, so unless you're a diehard fan (or get them free) go with Samsung or LG. LG is actually the better choice in many aspects (just not, unfortunately, when it comes to hardware/feel).

Ok XP can only see one partition on a removable USB but if change the USB driver to a fixed disk driver then XP will see it as a hard drive then we can have lay down multiple partitions as we like. Now open regedit and goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USBSTOR
and double click on USBSTORE and you see a subkey below it, select the first subkey below USBSTORE and right click and select Copy Key Name
Here is mine, yours maybe different.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Generic&Prod_ USB_Flash_Disk&Rev_0.00
Now we need only need this part:
USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Generic&Prod_USB_Flash_Disk&Rev_0.00
Copy and paste it temporarily into notepad.
You will now need this driver. http://www.xpefiles.com/viewtopic.php?t=92
Unpack it to a folder on your desktop. Inside the folder is the file cfadisk.inf. You need to open this file and scroll down to you see the line %Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install, specific data
Now you need to replace all lines %Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install, specific data with
the line you copied from your registry like so.
%Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install,USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Generic&Prod_USB_Flash_Disk&Rev_0.00
There could be more lines so replace all and save the file.
Goto Device Manager and click on disk drives. You see your USB listed, dbl click on it and goto the driver tab and click update driver and install from a specific location and choose the driver to install and click on Have Disk and browse to the cfadisk.inf file your modified driver on your desktop and force that to replace your existing driver. It might ask you to reboot. You should now have your USB showing as Local Disk

I used this to make more partitions on a usb stick , maybe you can use this to make a local Disk of it and then make a new partition on it .
unfortunately I do not have XP anymore but diskpart under windows7 does not detect the media itself so it cant do a diskpart in the first case.
Its like the media does "not exist" anymore.
I really don't want to throw away my 16GB and my 32GB card and am still trying out solutions here.

The SD card cannot be reused to prevent piracy and information threft.
If you have business information on you SD card (say, emails, PPT/Word/XL documents), you don't want anyone to be able to just remove the SD card and use it in another phone. It's well known that WP7 uses a Raid-like setup for storage to show SD+Internal storage as one continuous unit.
Why people think you'd be able to just remove the SD card and view it in another computer/phone is beyond me... It's like common sense has gone AWOL these days...
Making the card unreadable improves security. Perhaps this isn't a big deal to many, but until you have a phone stolen/lost with confidential infromation on it, you don't know what it feels like to know that the informatin is safe and inaccessible to others.
Also, it's totally random which SD cards will work correctly in WP7 devices. The cards that do work are only shipped in bulk (to manufacturers, most likely), and aren't available for consumer purchase.
It's totally possible that a card may work right now, but as it ages it will start to fail and you will be forced to remove it.
Paying $200 for a 32GB Class 6 card right now isn't even worth the risk.
SD Card Size and Class has nothing to do with compatibility. It has more to do with random read/write speeds, which aren't the same as the card's throughput (i.e. Class).
That is probably why there aren't ay 32 GB WP7 devices available at the moment. If you want more storage you can either:
1. Buy a 16GB device and deal with it if it's enough for you.
2. Buy a 16GB device and wait for WP7 compatible SD Cards to become available.
3. Don't buy a phone and wait for 32GB phones are available (and maybe by the time the WP7-compatible SD cards are available and you can get up to 64GB storage).
4. Wait until a manufacturer releases a phone with 32GB+ NAND Flash Memory in it.
IMO, Microsoft should have dictated NAND Flash memory. SD cards do nothing but create support issues, and allow the manufacturers to skimp a lot (by using the lowest class cards available, among other things).

The more I read on the WP7 and its "expandable" storage the more I am convinced that MS has implemented RAID0 stripping to provide a higher bandwidth/speed increase in I/O and disregard data integrity error checking. This leads me to believe that WP7's performance on a slower media is horrendous (MicroSD cards), and without a doubt it is a cost saving for manufacturers because no one in their mind is going to pay a premium price for high capacity NAND storage.

Anyway to connect a hard drive?

I've searched all over, because a while back I thought I seen a post somewhere about hooking up external usb devices to the phone, but I can't find it anymore. Is there an adapter or special cord that will allow you to hook up your DINC 2 to an external hard drive?

It would be nice if there was also a way to plug a flashdrive into the charger connection on the side of the phone and be able to read from that. People could have special collections of apps and roms that could be shared with friends by simply letting them plug in your flash drive. I honestly don't understand why this hasn't been an option. why couldnt a flash drive be pluged into one of these adapters (http://www.google.com/products/cata...=X&ei=PRh6Ts68OqrQiAKClK3JDw&ved=0CL0BEPMCMAM). from here it would just be a matter of the phone being able to read the information off the flashdrive, which im sure some developers could find a way..
As far as I know, the main issue is whether or not the USB port supports a USB host function. It's similar to the concept of a computer being able to support high-def video but not having an HDMI-out port through which to broadcast the signal. Then the second hurdle to jump over is whether or not a USB Host Stack has been written/and or provided in the software. That's where a dev would be able to write a stack (not very easy) for the phone.
Here's a little reading on the subject.

I was intrigued and googled your image. Found and installed USB Host Controller but it said the phone does not have the OTG or HOST driver installed. On the app page it links to Nexus One USB Host project page saying Snapdragon/HTC supported kernels can be found there or something along that nature. From what I can gather it would need to be added into a kernel something which I have no idea how to do. Also, it sounds like ICS will support this feature by default so I doubt the devs will go out of their way to implement it. One can always dream though . Hope that helps!

external usb hard drive possible???

My buddy is leaving for military overseas and just got kindle fire...not new one..he also got exteral hard drive. He wanted me to load up the hard drive with a bunch of movies i have for him to watch. Do i have to root the fire for it to read the hard drive? I have no problem rooting since i do it with all my phones and tablets. Ive seen stuff that involves having a OTG cable...im going to assume thats mandatory. What roms support the feature? Can you buy one of those cables at best buy or only online? Thanks for any help
I am not sure if this can be done, from what i have read a few topics on this in numerous places and nobody has had success with an actual external hard drive. Of course for it to even be possible you would need an adapter and there is still no way that i have found to make the Kindle to be able to read the content on the external drive to make it usable on the kindle. If it is i would also like to know how because the 6ish GB that are made available besides the cloud drive are quite small and can run low real fast.
Only one way to find out
I KNOW there is support for usb OTG for the kindle. What ROM to run? I have no idea. I know that you need at least Hashcode's 3.x kernel for it to work. twa_priv has a ROM that has that, is regularly updated, and has a lot of bonus features too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778010. I a currently running it. I have an OTG cable, but I have lost all my usb drives. I have heard that it works with mice and keyboards, but haven't gotten any success with those.
I have this installed: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hu.sztupy.android.usbhostcontroller
i don't know if you need it or not, but i think you do.

External Storage

I pre-ordered the 32gb xl, not wanting to wait a month or more for a 128gb. With 4k videos, apps and however much daydream wants to eat up though, it seems a little dismal. I was checking out https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-connector-Android-Devices-SDDD2-032G-G46/dp/B00RBGYGPG?th=1 something like this. A usb-c storage option and kind of hoping I could mount it and store videos and junk on this little sucker. I am not sure how well it mounts, or if it only really transfers files through the manufacturers app like the description implies. Does anyone have experience with using something like this as a external storage solution to replace a SD card? Rooting would be fine, as long as I could stuff files on here and have the OS access them as if they were local.
What would be ideal for my case is if I could install apps to it like an SD card or at least have VLC be able to 'see it' and play off from it. If anyone has any insight in this or a better solution for a situation where your not on your home network, I would love the suggestions.
Using the provided USB A-C adaptor (the one for transferring info from the old phone to the new phone) I can plug in a regular USB flash drive and access the files normally through there.
Using this method, if you plug in a drive that is formatted using exFAT (default for flash drives in Windows) it will prompt you to reformat it and will do so in FAT32. So if you want files larger than 4GB, you will have to reformat it to NTFS using your computer.

So it will act just like a SD card. Cool, this is a pretty decent alternative. Maybe with the exclusion of sdcards in newer phones, it will prompt some low profile usb-c storage options, the dongle is kind of a pita, but Ill take what I can get.
I might be wrong here but I cannot get a 32gb micro SD to register using es file explorer but I can get a 16 gb card to work. Anyone else get the same issue. Is there a limkt. Id love to be able to use my 256 gb card to work as external storage when needed

Did you check the format of the card? FAT and NTFS are good to go, exFAT is not. The USB flash drive I tested with is a 64GB.

I also want to tack on here, NTFS seems to be working a lot more slowly for me than FAT. So unless you really need >4GB files on there, I'd reccomend FAT.

Legend that worked. 256 gb cards are readable. Shows what the Google specialists knew when I asked them using the built in support

Oh I see. That's my problem too then. I tried to use PNY 128GB microSD Card Elite 85MB/s, U1 with OTG Reader (P-OTGCR128MSC3-GE) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H5C7IIM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The phone knows the memory is there, but can't read it. Should I reformat to NTFS maybe?
Ever since Google decided to ban external sd cards, they are intentionally making it hard for us use any types of external storage. They want to keep everyone's life data so they know about you better than you yourself know. From places you visit and pay and stay, they can match up with someone else's data and see if you're having an affair. Scary part is that your wife will probably start getting a Google ad from divorce attorneys and PI's tomorrow. She doesn't know why, but will eventually find out why. Opt-out while you can!

That was the same message I was getting while plugging in a USB flash drive that was formatted in exFAT. Reformatted it with FAT via the phone and was able to access it just fine. Formatting in NTFS led to really low read speeds for the short time that I used it, went back to FAT and it's fast again.

I dont think this is google making it difficult. Android is based on Linux, which explains why exfat and ntfs might not work by default. Fat32 has limitations but heck, it is what sd cards had to be formatted with as well anyway so its not really a limitation. What we really need is a low profile usb-c flash drive that can offer pass-through of power. The transfer speeds on usb-c are high enough where it would be a good replacement for a micro-sd.
I did not have this EXACT one.. just using it as reference, but with my Nexus 6, I had a micro SD card reader that plugged into the micro USB slot on the phone.

I just did a quick search and looks like they have something similar for USBc available. Only a few reviews so far tho
