Very weirdly I noticed tonight that my notifications weren't making a sound. When I dug a little deeper I found I had no sound right across the board, ringtones, notifications. music, youtube, ANYWHERE !
I have looked through all the settings and nothing is set to mute and all volume levels are up. Factory reset has not cured this.
Anyone have any ideas ?

I got my phone today...sound worked once then all sounds are gone??? No solution found?!!!! Is it a hardware issue?? Should we return it?
Try plugging in the headphones. Maybe something is wrong with your headphone socket and it thinks headphones are plugged in.

I agree, this has happened to make with previous phones on a few occasions. I think it can happen if you get a little dirt in the headphone socket.
Gave up and returned mine. I couldn't get the sounds back. Hopefully a replacement will be with me in a couple of days.
Did any of you use any software like Volume+, Volume control etc... ?

it has nothing to do with the socket or the headphone, the phone doesnt ring or produce any sound in "normal profile". it just vibrate in all profils . i returned mine too today !

Whenever I have anything plugged into my headphones jack, my phone starts to freak out. If I'm playing music it will randomly play, pause, skip, seek, and even bring up the voice dialer. Has anybody had a similar problem, or do I need to visit Sprint? Any replies appreciated.

Is it for all headphones/audiocables? Look inside the jack and see if you have the two little metal pieces that push in. Those are what tells the phone is plugged in.
Sounds like you might have stuck a cable in at an angle by accident and bent one of them or thrown off the sensors
They're fine, and even if that was the case I would expect it to not recognize headphones, but the problems I am having make no sense
Have you tried different head phones?

My only thought is are you using headphones with a Mic and an "action" button. If you have press the button it will play or pause the music. If you hold it down it will open the Voice dialer app. If it has the mic and button maybe there is a fault with it, hence the randomness. If you are just using headphones check the headphone icon, if its recognizing it right should just show headphones and not a headphones with a boom mic on the status bar. Either try dif mic headphones or take it back to the store

hey I am having the same problem, I use doggcatcher as my podcast player and when I have my headphones (no mic) plugged in, randomly my phone starts playing other previously downloaded podcasts over the one Im listening to in the phones stock music player, then it skips forward, backwards, then the voice dialer comes on and this is all while my phone is locked and the screen wake / power button has not been touched!
Whats going on????
having a similar problem as well and have seen it mentioned on other forums. so far no definitive fix. i'm pissed. if this turns out to be a faulty hardware issue or somethign that isn't easily solved, it's a dealbreaker. I'll take the phone back and sprint will lose a customer.
hopefully it won't come to that.

Bump..anything? If we have to take our phones back, will they replace it on the spot? Do I need to go back to radio shack or can I just take it to a Sprint store?
Blaster ( and anyone else having this problem) have you tried installing & running a widget from the market called headset blocker? If not, give it a try and report back your results, if you don't mind

Had same issues with a portable stereo... exact same symptoms... found if I locked the device by pressing power button... it didn't do it at all.
Also - using an FM transmitter to car's stereo - no problems...
There is an option in the System Settings area to choose to 'pause music when headset is unplugged'... disabling that might be an optional workaround.
I was having this problem using a double male cable to plug into my aux input in my car. I was able to make it bring up voice dialer consistently by bending the end of the cable. I bought a new cable and the problem is gone now.. even when bending and twisting the new cable. My new cable has gold plated ends and the old one did not.. not sure if that matters, and I don't care as long as it keeps working.

I also took the tape off and checked the connection point and best I can tell it looks like it is hitting just right so no adjustments there.

I just experimented a little with a cheap pair of computer speakers. I found that jiggling the connection seems to cause the icon to change from headphones to headset and that is when voice dialing pops up. I tried the same thing with my moderately priced earbuds with gold plated plug and could not cause the same issues with those. The jacks appear to be exactly the same physical size.
I plan to try a different cable in the car when I can.

BTW - I also have near zero FM reception. I was only able to get one pair of headphones to weakly tune a few stations. Any other cheap turner works great in same location.
And yes it is definitely plugged in all the way.

They worked perfectly with my computer speakers. But they definitely went crazy in my car. I think the plug is slightly different. It must have pushed it back in to its old position because my computer speakers started acting crazy when I plugged them in again.
My Lumia 900 was working fine then all of a sudden it didn't make any sound even with volume 30/30. Looking back I believe it started after I disconnected a car audio cable. I eventually tried some headphones. I removed the headphones and again nothing. I also used an audio cable for my car. After removing it the built in speaker sound was back. I thought the phone was fine but a few days later the same thing happened again. I tried the car audio cable and the sound did not come back. I tried some headphones and the sound came back. Totally random and very annoying. Is anyone else experiencing this? I really don't want to exchange my phone.

Are you plugging/unplugging the cables/phones while music is playing? There is some kind of quirky circuit in WP that will pause/mute sound when you plug something in while playing. Have seen this happen on both my Surround and L900. Try plugging/unplugging when music is paused and see what happens. Also, if you are using any kind of case, make sure the audio jack is fully seated.

Awesome. Thanks. I'll pay attention to what I'm doing the next time and see if your suggestion helps. I just don't want to exchange the phone if there isn't a reason to.
Possible jack problem
Alternatively, though, it could be a bad jack that makes only marginal physical contact when a plug is removed. If so, you have little to worry about with a warranty exchange. Just make sure you've sync'ed your phone to Zune on your PC, and your contacts/calendar to an Exchange or Windows Live account. You can wipe your phone yourself under Settings/About/More/Reset. About the only elements that won't be retained for a new phone once you've set up those Live and Exchange accounts are contact groups, settings, and old SMS messages.

Just wanted to know whether you managed to sort your problem out ?
Having the same problem on one day old lumia, but found that I press the edge of the glass between the windows logo and search button the sound returns.
I believe there is a loose connection at the bottom of the screen with regards to the sound speaker

Sorry. Swapped phones because of purple screen. Sound did come back. Not sure what actually worked.
My four day old Lumia did the same thing. I would press on the bottom of the phone and sound did come back while I was holding it. I slapped the back of the Lumia against my thigh (near the speaker) and sound came back. I am definitely taking it back soon.
I had the same problem w/my Lumia 900. I chopped off the end of a cotton swap (the kind with the paper shaft) and dipped it into some alcohol. I inserted the beheaded swab into the headphone jack and twisted it around slowly and eventually the speaker started working. I guess it though I still had headphones plugged into it and it muted the speakers.
bump. i'm having this same issue. Wish I would've read thsi before hand as the car headphone connector was in my friend's car. any more ways to work around this?
Just called AT&T...they're sending a replacement phone. It's frustrating though because I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software defect. I would hate if in a year when my warranty expires, I do the same thing on accident and can't get it replaced. I couldn't even receive calls with the phone after plugging it into the car audio. So hopefully this thread will be a good warning to anyone with a lumia not to plug it into the car stereo unless you want your speakers to blow.

I got a problem in Audio Jack. when i plug in my headphone , i have to hold it by side to get accurate sound.
also the ticking sound of plugging in is also changed. is there any way to fix it without opening it? i don't have a warranty and don't want to waste it's value by opening it

Even I had the same problem! It was a problem with my headphones not the audio jack!
Sometimes it is not phone or headphone problem. did you push jack hard when you want to plug in? I mean are u sure that the jack is fully plugged in?
I too have had this problem. I've tried two different 'audio jack to audio jack' cables (to plug into the car and a stereo) and they both have this problem. I've tried 3 sets of headphones and only one works okay. The ones that work are the Samsung headphones that came with the phone, which is interesting. They all used to work okay, it's just the last few weeks this has happened.
I've tried pushing them all the way in, but the only thing that works is, if you're looking at the screen, pushing the jack slightly to the right. Does anyone know if there's a simple hardware fix, like tightening something? I've googled this (thought it might be a general problem on other devices) but couldn't find anything.

If anyone's interested, a short-term fix is a triangular piece of paper placed in the hole before you plug the headphones in. I have to push my jack to the right, so I put the paper on the left. Apparently pieces of drinking straws work and last longer.

Only samsung headphones work. My philips headphones that work on pc and another phones fine don't work on Ace2.

ive never used the samsung original headphones, bought some from my local pound shop they work ok
ok so i got my note 3 about 6 days ago and just noticed somthing that i dont like, the headphone jack is acting very strange.
first of all when i plug in a pair of headphones its not a very smooth entry its sort of choppy and doesnt feel very premium,
second, when i plug in my headphones sometimes the microphone stops working, and i hear a very loud thump everytime i change the track. now i noticed that it only happens if i insert the headphones slowly, and not only that but if i do that there is a horrible screetching sound coming from the headphones, it doesnt seem normal and it seems like a hardware issue.

Definitely seems like a hardware issue, have you tried other headphones. Shined a light down the headphone jack and see if there is any debris in there.

yea nothing in the hole but just to be clear its only if i plug it in slowly if i do it normally it doesnt happen, im at work right now so i cant try diferent headphones,
edit: ok its definitely a ground loop problem, it makes a static noise when i touch the screen worse if i put more and more fingers
Hello, I had my s3 sitting for a while and decide to use it (haven't used it for 7-8 months). So I go on Youtube and watch a video. The speaker works fine but whenever I insert the 3.5 mm jack, I cant hear anything and if I remove it the speaker stop working.
I have tried multiple ROMS (CM13, DU 5.1, Stock 4.4.2) but they all seem to have the same issue. I also tried 3 different headphones.
What could be the issue?

Been having this same issue for like a month or two now. Have done everything in my power to resort this issue.., all to no avail.. Let's just hope the mods are doing something bout this.. Else I will have no option than to resort to BT headset..

it could very well be a hardware issue, did you replace the headphone jack/speaker assembly?

Since I got this phone, nothing has been replaced other than the battery.. And besides I don't think its a hardware issue since we have more than 2 to 3 people experiencing the exact same issue..

Check if speakerphone works, if it does, then it is likely that the hp jack is jammed and causing the phone to disable the speaker because it thinks headphones are plugged in.

The speaker works fines expect when you plug in the jack and remove it the speakers stop working. I have the restart the phone to get the speakers working.

Yes, it sounds like a hardware issue of the headphone jack being jammed or broken. If the issue is exactly the same on all roms, I would definitely replace the headphone jack, they are not that expensive, only $7

Why I don't think this issue might be a hardware issue is that, when ever I plug the phone to a wall socket and connect the headset jack, the sound comes on. But some few minutes after taking it off the wall socket, the sound is gone. And I have to restart the phone to get the sound working again..

if the speaker works but headphone doesn't then it may be that the phone detects some other audio device on usb. Do you hear any sounds at all through the headphones, also do the playback controls on the headphone work? If they do it may be the audio IC
Yeah, the controls on the headphone do work when this occurs.. And I don't hear any other sound..
Mind you, Immediately after inserting the jack, all the sound (speaker and headset) system in the phone is lost. Until I do a restart.
