MHL/HDMI Out Works!! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Just thought that this feature has been ignored by websites and even Samsung. Seeing the specs list, I concluded that HDMI out was not supported by Galaxy Nexus.
Then I stumbled upon Modaco, and in their review they did mention this functionality.
I bought a cheap knock off MHL cable from the market, and viola! It works perfectly. I am just curious as to why this feature was not announced and anyone failed to cover it.

I agree with you that most websites have neglected to mention this function but it is pretty standard on new device releases now and in the Galaxy Nexus quick start guide it has a diagram of the phone with an arrow to the charging port the says Multifunction Jack. How is the quality of the picture?

Picture quality is superb.
One disadvantage is that the phone loses PORTRAIT mode while connected. The launcher becomes a landscape which is quite attractive. But full-screen portrait games run at a 90 degree angle.

I'm using a samsung gs2 one, you really get to see how high res the ui really is. The only thing is the density, It would be awesome if there was a "non root" way to put it into tablet mode.
Its even better with a bluetooth mouse connected

i got one of the cheap ones of ebay for mine and the pictures perfect on full HD stuff!
One problem i am having though is that now and then the screen will go black and loose sound for a second, it can happen a few times a minute or not at all for 5 mins or so but it keeps happening. Anyone else experiencing this?
I've not had chance to test on another TV yet to see if its something on there effecting it or if its the fact i got the cheapo MHL and not the Samsung one.

I did not experience it, but I hardly tried it for a few minutes.
The 'cheapo' cable I bought still ended up costing around 30 USD, so its cheap only by comparison. I strongly believe that it should be coming free inside the box since the functionality is there in the handset.
A few years ago those Nokia sets came with the TV out cable in the box. These phones cost almost twice that and yet.... There is a worrying trend to charge for peripherals - we already see wafer thin batteries in phones and then manufacturers rolling out expensive extended batteries. Next thing we know, they will be charging for chargers and headphones too.
Also would it kill Sammy if they'd just used a simple Micro-to-full HDMI cable without this MHL BS. it is a messy set up resulting in an explosion of cables under your telly, and since three sockets are involved, unreliable too.
Moto uses just a simple micro HDMI port in their sets. How hard can that be for Sammy or HTC to implement?

I brought my cheapo one for £6 on eBay, very good picture and sound, had no blackouts yet.

Hi can you share link and photo of the mhl cable that you bought?
Thanks.

Welcome to nexus. Lol. What's wrong with mhl? Micro hdmi port has its limitations too but it does have the advantage of simple mirroring without extra power being needed. Other than that advantage a messy explosion of cables is still needed to do anything serious.

1 vs 3 cables. Its all about practicality - it's irritating for me because in these days of batteries lasting barely one day, the charger is usually in the bedroom for overnight charging.
Although I did find a workaround - MicroUSB cable off the TV's USB port takes care of the charging side of MHL quite nicely . Clever me.
Also, MHL seems to be a mixed blessing for portrait apps. In HDMI mirroring the display at least switches to portrait when there is a full screen portrait game running. No such luck here. My Flick Golf looks like Angry Birds with MHL!

Completely unrelated: If someone could hack this into Android x86 as a feature, I would install it on my netbook in an instant.

I bought some random $12 MHL adaptor on eBay and while it works the reliablity isn't very great. When I plug my GN in sometimes nothing happens, sometimes it works instantly. Sometimes it works perfectly fine sometime it changes between analog looking static and black intermittently. If you're going to buy one I think you should just buy it retail as buying 2 on eBay (Assuming you get a bad one the first time like I seem to have) it will cost you the same as getting it retail.

what is the HDMI out on the gnexus like, is it basically HDMI mirroring, or are you taken into some mode (like the atrix's webtop)
does it fill the screen at 1920x1080 if i wanted to stream netflix for example or a HD video from the android market

Are you experiencing the phone losing battery even though it is charging? e.g. it kills more power than the USB can provide? Has anyone tried the monoprice cable with regards to this? Thanks guys.

Does using an MHL to HDMI adapter use any additional resources (RAM/CPU/GPU/etc)? I'd imagine it does since it mirrors, outputting to two sources at once (screen on the GN and the output jack). I ask this because the reason I bought one, well 90% of the reason anyway, was to use it for PSX and N64 emulators with a PS3 dual shock controller. I know those put a strain on the system in and of themselves, but it seems like they work even less well when using the MHL to HDMI adapter. There is pretty bad lag with some games, but others are okay (Mario Kart 64 was pretty bad, while F-Zero X seemed to be perfect). PSX is the same way, Intelligent Qube works well but Metal Gear Solid is almost unplayable. But when I don't use the adapter and just play it on the phone it's not as bad. The audio is choppy sometimes but game play is still smooth. Not so much the case when using the adapter...
No lag when using SNES emulator, so it's probably just the added resources needed for the more advanced emulators. Still, kind of baffling that its mostly fine without the adapter and not so fine with it.

For most things I don't care if its OEM as long as it works (I have learned to prefer OEM batteries unless they are good batteries)

Does the Samsung cable have a charging port as well?
I don't know I sure hope so.
although with the extended battery it looks like I can play about 84 minutes of video and I was down to 85% battery life so about 5.6 to 1 minutes to percent. so roughly 560 minutes or about 9+ hours per charge.
WOW and that is at full volume and full screen brightness. assuming that depletion rate holds (I just might have to test that one day)

Monoprice is the bomb. I get tons of quality cables, speaker stuff, etc. from them for incredible prices. Did I mention that their stuff is quality too?
I bought the one from Monoprice that locoboi187 linked in post #7. It's working fine. It was $11 shipped.
In addition to the HDMI jack, the adapter also has a jack to plug in your phone charger, and thus power the adapter and also charge your phone. I had made the assumption that connecting the charger was an optional nicety, but it turns out to be required. It has to be plugged in so that the tv will see the connection. That makes it a little cumbersome since you have both the HDMI cable and the charger cable to contend with, but it works.
Question: Is there any way to turn off the phone screen while its outputting video to the tv?
I don't have anything with HDMI so I can not test but have you tried simply pressing power to turn off the screen?
I know in many programs the program keeps running (podcast player)
moboplayer turns off when you hit power time permitting and if I remember I will try some others. Does core player make an android app?
I bet one of them has a "screen off" function.
If you press the power button to turn off the screen, then the HDMI output turns off too.
I picked up the monoprice mhl hdmi adapter, looks solid. I didnt like the fact that the samsung "oem" one on ebay didnt show a picture of it having a seconday micro usb for charging the phone. I also picked up 220855903037 from ebay. I plan to use both together with 160708041305 and my logitech 5.1 surround setup. Going to have a 20" lcd monitor on the corner table. This will achieve a make shift jukebox. I hope it all turns out like im hoping. Ill make a post with the results.

Yeah, I knew that, I comparing the price to the generic 5pin MHL adaptor which we could use if samsung didn't decide to change to 11pin.
I guess it will never be as cheap since its a niche product for the S3.
This might sound silly but my TV doesn't have a HDMI port (it's pretty old but still slim)
Is there any other type of converters like scart to micro usb (sounds unlikely)

Same here. After doing some research it looks like an unbranded Samsung MHL adapter for the S3. The picture isn't clear enough to get the model number for comparison, but I'm pretty sure after looking at the FCC markings and other things that don't line up with the new S2 MHL adapter. :good:
Ordered it a few mins ago
This one's $20 shipped.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-MHL-T...063258?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f1c05845a
Looking forward to hearing feedback from someone who gets one of these generic adapters.
I spoke with Monoprice's customer service last week and they said they plan on having their own compatible S3 MHL cable before October. I'll probably wait until then as I know theirs will work and should be fairly cheap.
Down to $22 eh? Last I checked the knock-offs were $30, and the samsung official was $40 (now $35).
I'm going to get one of these 11pin mhl-hdmi cables when they finally drop down to $10 like the S2's is, mainly because the 5-to-11 adapter I'm using on my 5pin S2 cable is TOO WIDE for my incipio silicrylic case (and most others) so I have to bend the silicone down. So, fair warning about the adapter for the adapter
Has anybody received one of these from eBay yet? If so, how well does it work?
I've seen a few too many discussions regarding plugging in subpar adapters into these phones that have caused problems. So I may be a bit paranoid but I think I'll stick with official Samsung adapters. Good price though if it works.

Best MHL HDMI Adapter on the Market

Hey guys,
I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus. I am looking for an MHL HDMI adapter for my HDTV. I don't mind spending cash if it means I get the best quality, best picture and best sound from this piece of hardware. Otherwise, should I find out that MHL HDMI adapters don't make a difference then I will defiantly go for the best bargain. Which would you guys recommend, given these circumstances?
Thanks!!
HDMI is digital, which means that poor equipment would affect your signal only after meters of distance.

I got SKIVA from amazon some time ago and it works flawlessly.
The only problem is that many apps don't work in landscape more only portrait which becomes annoying.
You can even pair a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard to it.
Also you need your phone to be attached to a high power outlet because the battery gets drained fairly quickly.

I had a Samsung MHL to HDMI Adapter and it went out on me. Probably because it wasn't a real Samsung or for older phones. But I just tested Menotek last night and it worked flawlessly as well. Never tried SKIVA but I would also like to know which one is the best....
this cable makes the picture / video is displayed on the TV with the resolution 1080p?
One thing I would like to add is video isn't as smooth as it should be. I think that's because I was trying to play 1080p from phone to monitor over the cable.
I don't think my GNex is powerful enough to handle that over HDMI although it plays 1080p fine which are stored in the phone.

I use an original Samsung MHL Adapter. Works beautifully. Microusb goes into your phone and a standard full sized hdmi cable goes into the other. However, there is a microUSB IN port where you need to supply power to the adapter too. I use my external battery pack to power it.
Cost me like $15 from Deal extreme. Quite happy with it.

I have/use the official Samsung OEM MHL adapter too, $7 on eBay from China! Woo!
The problem, and I guess this is MHL adapters in general, the way the GalNex/Android is set up, but the screen has to stay on to display to the TV, obviously it's a necessity for navigating, but like with Netflix one should be able to shut off the screen.
Anyway, watching Netflix at least, battery drains slowly when plugged in, major flaw IMO... anyone else have this issue?
What about a MHL ADAPTER that'll work with Galaxy Nexus and Nexus7?

AFAIK Nexus 7 doesn't support mhl. Sorry
I just use a cheap no-brand mhl I bought on gmarket (Korean shopping site), it has a plug for power in to the adapter near the HDMI plug. Works perfectly with my gnex and my wife's Optimus LTE 2.

Correct me if I am wrong but pretty sure nexus 7 doesn't have any kind of mhl support or drivers. This kept me away for it and Google wants us to "stream" content therefore no support. I hope nexus 10 will have mhl support.

Are you complaining about the battery drain using MHL adapter during playback??
If yes than that is not a flaw, check which wall charger you are using, i am guessing it's 0.5A or 1A.
I use a 2A charger while using MHL support which instead of draining the battery, charges it so i suggest you look into that, infact i use 2A charger all the time for charging. Some say that it decreases the life of the battery but it charges the phone fairly quickly.
2A wall chargers cost around $4 on ebay.

I believe so. The hdmi is for the video/audio, and the USB is for charging, so you would have to connect to two ports, then you can plug into your micro USB in your phone. Most smart tv's nowadays have usb and allow for charging, so this is convenient as it will be right near the hdmi. I don't think they allow to charge with the tv off though, in case you were wondering like me. (Was planning on using this as my main charger, but not if tv has to be on to charge lol
Hi, today i received the adaptor but High bitrate Full HD video playback seems to have frames drop and GSM network drop on my n5 32Gb stock

It is working fine, but when I am playing heavy videogames it seems like the power for charging is not enough and even when I have it plugged to a power source it loses battery. Has anyone had this problem?

I've just bought a really cheap Slimport adapter on DealXtreme, link here: http://dx.com/es/p/slimport-to-hdmi...optimus-g-pro-fujitsu-arrows-tab-black-244142
I'll reviewed as soon as it came.

Have you reviewed it yet?
I bought the one from Deal Extreme and it's not working for ****. The display cuts in and out making it completely useless. Very frustrating...

Have you tried different HDMI cables?
Yup, I've tried 3 different HDMI cables of varying lengths. My only thought is to try a different TV... but that's kind of useless as I wanted to use it on the living room tv which is actually brand new in itself (only 1 month old). All of my other HDMI devices have no problems, but this is totally broken.
Is there much lag using the Slimport adapters?
I measured my wife's GS3 today through MHL by recording a running stopwatch app and the lag was minimal at 0.04s which made me think it would be great for gaming on the big screen. Thing is I found that when I ran an emulator the lag seemed to increase to a point where games were unplayable.
I'm thinking of getting a slimport for my nexus 5 for gaming mainly as I thought the delay would be a lot less than Miracast but I read somewhere that not only does the slimport affect any lag time between the phone and TV but also the TV itself. Just wondering if anyone our there has used the slimport or miracast for gaming with success?

I have not used it extensively (for gaming) but I have used it with a game called Beat Hazard and it works very well. Also works without problems with a game called Waking Mars. I have not played for more than 10 minutes mind you. I use the video output for XBMC (movies), which works splendidly.

Have you tried to connect charger too? I think that I have the same adapter as you and it's working only with charger connected

You got my hopes up there
I tried it last night and even with an AC power adapter connected it is still cutting out.

I had the same question cause there was a noticeable lag on my S4 via MHL. You should check out this video comparing MHL and SlimPort with an S4 and Nexus 5: http://youtu.be/XnR3KofhVMA there is very minimal lag with SlimPort.

So is it any good?
Thats the same one I have, it works well. Its got a second port so you can charge the phone while using hdmi.
The one from dx, does it works with anyone else?? I'm about to buy that one...

Any relatively cheap and GOOD slimports?

Hey guys
ill get my N5 soon and i got 32GB just so that i can easily use the phone to see movies and shows that i store on the phone - on a TV.
but for that i need a slimport - i dont think these things should cost 30-50 USD, its just a damn adapter, like the VGA/DVI or DVI/HDMI and those cost like a dollar..
so did anyone here order something cheaper that is a charger+port and works great without tearing a hole in the pocket?
ty!
p.s
if you got one of the expensive ones and they work well please do share
I'm curious about this as well, looking forward to some peoples experiences.

I bought the original SP1002 for the N4 then after an OS update it was useless because it kept showing blue screen flickers while watching movies. Also the charging was terrible, the battery would run down faster than it could charge. They then released the SP1003 to fix these issues. I'll never buy an Analogix product again for this reason, so it would be nice to see some alternatives.
Maybe this? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00EPMF504/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1385733482&sr=8-1&pi=SY200

lol all demand and no supply.... we should each order one of the cheap one and review them... take a bullet for the team
I used this one for N4 and N5:
http://www.amazon.com/Slimport-Adap...=UTF8&qid=1385749542&sr=8-3&keywords=slimport
It works as promised, but the charging rate is limited to USB speed (-100~+50mA with screen on with 2A generic car charger).
I'm currently using SP1003 for my N5, and this one seems to get AC charging speed (400~500mA),
and it actually says "AC charging" on the phone too. Phone has stock kernel.
The AC charging seems tot be unrelated to the sp1003. I'm using the sp1002 and still get AC charging with stock kernel. I also get noise/snow/flicker when the GPRS signal drops (I use slimport in my car)
i know this is a old post but i would like to let some ppl know the accel slimport is a good adapter, it does flicker at times due to gprs/signal drop like the other guy said but besides that it works great!
This isn't exactly a Slimport, but I think it works the same as one. Only $3 (without shipping & tax)
Link here
I got one off eBay for about $8, this would flicker and disconnect a lot and would completely die out if used for 30-60minutes. You get what you paid for and if it is flickering when you're not touching it, there is a problem.
Oh and you're better off getting a chromecast and pushing videos to stream through that then connecting your device via a ****ty slimport adapter like the one I have. When it doesn't flicker it works fine tho.
