How's the data usage with Google Music app? (Since GN has 16GB/no support for ext SD) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
I'm on the fence of buying a Nexus Galaxy and been researching here and there. This one thing I haven't had experience with before and could not find clear answers searching here and there.
What kind of data usage should I expect If got the GN and used Google Music to save my collection on the cloud and play it over 3g/4g data? I have the 2GB/Mo plan from AT&T.
Well, I listen to a lot of musical genres and have a large collection of MP3s (not MPfree's!).
I never tried the Google Music service since I have a 16GB Atrix 4G with 32GB SD card on to carry "some" of my collection with me always.
*I read a lot posts online by people who are hesitating to buy the GN because of the limitation to 16GB only. I know cloud services are being pushed harder and I'm surprised myself that after I thought of everything and the google music solution to my music collection, 16GB can do! But network data has costs around it, y'know.
I think it's would a nice advertisement/complimentary if Verizon (or other carriers later) would give their GN customers a special offer/discount on data plans considering the nature of the device.
Ah, don't forget my question mates. Your opinion/experience with data usage and Google Music.
Thank you

I don't use Google Music for streaming. Whatever I have is on my phone (not much though). But I can tell you this, if you have a lot of music stored on Google Music (online) then expect to see some high data usage. I have not used any music that is stored by Google (when you select some random genres of music at the time of setting up your account) but my data usage on Google Music player still shows 211 mb used ... I guess that's for syncing or caching all the music on my phone. So atleast initially you will see high data usage and not so much afterwards. My 2 cents ... I hope somebody with more experience would give us real information.

I wouldnt recommend streaming unless you still have an unlimited data plan. Period. Streaming music adds up quick.

I use it quite a bit, but I have an unlimited plan. That said, I have never gone over 2GB on my bill. Mostly because I use wifi when I can.
Based on my experience, listening to an album can use anywhere between 30-60mb depending on quality and length.
Google music also caches the album you listen to. Which is nice when you listen to it again it won't be streaming.

ok, so i dont own the nexus yet, still 1.5 days from possession. but i use google music extensively on my captivate. i have a 16gb phone with 16 gb sdcard, but i kinda like to segregate my music, so i have some on my phone, some on amazon and some on google. i listen to google everyday while commuting to work for 1-1.5hrs, with highest quality option turned on, and everyday my usage is around 50-60mb.i go to work 21-22 days, so its more or less 1gb for google music. i am also on att 2gb plan, before google music i used ~1.1gb per month(used pandora a lot), right now i use 1.6gb.
So yeah, be it pandora, amazon, slacker, or google i use 800-1gb on music every month.

Well, I think we can calculate it.
In the worst case you'd have a 320kbps MP3. When you convert from bits to bytes (by dividing by 8) you get 40kBps.
That means that every minute of music you'll listen to will take use 2.4MB (2400kBps = 40kBps x 60 seconds).
On your 2GB plan, that lets you listen to about 833 minutes of music (or 13 hours straight, or 160 five-minute songs).
That's the worst case which I think you'd only run into if a) you turn on the option in the Music app that forces high quality and b) the song you've stored on Google music is 320kbps.
I hope that logic works out.
Another thing to think about, if you put 6-8GBs of you fav music on the phone, you'd still have lots of space on the phone and significantly reduce the data usage.
BTW....I'm facing the same struggle in my decision on the GN....but I think I may have just help myself decide. LOL

I say blow it all! its juz 10$ per GB!

easy for you to say in the great white north is $80+ for only 2GB....

I don't think you will use up all 16GB storage other than musics. And how large are your total music collections? Why don't you open wifi and cache all or most favorite music down on GN so you won't be stream when you listen to them. And if you really run out of space, google music will free up some for you without any problem.

Faster 4G = being throttled quicker!

Basically unless you have access to wifi streaming music and video is out. This makes it impossible for me to stream music while i work, so it is back to the radio. This is going to continue until people tell the cell phone companies no this is not acceptable.
I have the 5GB plan and I've been doing a LOT with it; Downloading HD Videos off of youtube, downloading music, Web browsing, streaming youtube videos, tethering to my computer to play online games (which is smooth and lag-free), and I've used up about 1.6GB. I can't even imagine using 10GB in that small of a time frame.
You used 10GB just from streaming Netflix once and using Pandora everyday since the 8th of December? That number sounds very high. Do you have some sort of data manager that tracks how much data (in MB) your apps are using up?
I do agree that with these blazing speeds, it is easy to go nuts and just go on a rampage. I know that if I didn't restrain myself sometimes, I could use up my data cap in a couple days. Kind of a bummer that we can't truly enjoy the phone without having to worry about being throttled =/

The only thing that uses more data is running speedtests or having higher quality music/video streams (and higher speedtest download files) because your connection is faster.
Solution: stop streaming so much, use WiFi more. They can't do away with caps because your speeds wouldn't be fast anymore.. duh.

Last month was my first with the GS2, used about 11GB (10,980 megabytes). Mainly with Netflix daily at the gym, google music and ROM downloading. It's just so hard to do wifi when it's slower then the network.

You guys are lucky... you know when your going to get throttled, I don't. I only know when I get the Top 5% text.
And you also feel my pain, LTE is like 3x faster (I have 24/3 at home, LTE usually gets around 45/60 down and 15 up), I download all the time on LTE.
I hate having to be stingy about data usage.

RESOLUTION FOR THIS? If you change your data plan after 2 hours it restarts you MB counter.
Call, and ask to be switched to the 10gb BB plan [they future date if you downsize], wait 2 hours, call and swap back to android :x

No it doesn't. You are mistaken.. It only adds to your current data if you go up in limit, it doesn't "restart" your mb counter. They cannot reset it at all.

That's cool if you "worked" there. But your knowledge is incorrect. There's no way a rep or supervisor can reset data. They can add to it if you change your data plan to a higher cap, but they can't reset it. And if you do go up and change back before the month is up, you drop back to your old cap and remain at the same usage.
I know this for a fact. Trust me.

Thought about buying GN, but....

Why does the GSM version only have 16GB of memory? Why can't it at least have a microsd slot???
Even the N1 had a microsd slot and then with NS it was removed, but the phone has 16GB built in. That was ok LAST YEAR..
I want a real upgrade, but I can't upgrade to increased storage (with GN) so I can get rid of my Zune and carry a single device.
Will we wind up with a 32GB GSM version or would it be better just to wait and see what the specs look like on SGS3?
I looked at that phone... it's just way too big. For now I will just enjoy my NS on ICS, but I am thinking about either the SGS2 for my next phone (once it has CM9) or just waiting for the SGS3.
maybe just stop listening to stupid noises, at least on the go? hm.

My Zune.. is nearly 2 years old and has 32GB of storage. You're telling me that a brand new cutting edge phone should be artificially limited to 16GB?
I guess that's what I was getting at. I am at a loss as to why the verizon model has 32GB and the GSM has 16GB. Why even have a 16GB model at all?

On that note... Why take a step backwards from N1 (My N1 has a 32gb micro sd) to the NS (which I also have) and then stay at the same level with GN?
Maybe I am beating a dead horse, but honestly the GN (other than the screen) doesn't look that appealing because of the storage and the fact that they used the same graphics chip as my NS (slightly overclocked) to drive the huge HD screen. Maybe that doesn't make that big of a difference, but the specs are somewhat of a let down since this is supposed to be setting the bar for other manufacturers with ICS phones.
Right. Why not throw in a 128GB flash storage, just to be on the safe side, right ?
I hate these kind of threads. Do you really need MORE than 16000/5(average track) = 3200 songs on your phone at any time ? Do you need 6400 songs ? Really ? Use Google Music if you really need tens of thousands of tracks with you all the time. Jeez...
Keep in mind that the future IS cloud computing. Don't go bullshitting on me now, it IS KNOWN this is the truth. So if you can't get your act together now, just don't buy THIS particular phone and wait for the phone that is suitable for you and when cloud computing is going to be suitable for you. It's that simple. Rule of thumb: if you're not really keen on buying a 700$ phone (even on contract), because of whatever "defect" from your perspective, just don't buy it.

I agree with the first point you made but I totally disagree with cloud computing being the future. It is at times reliable, but it is certainly not something I'd want to risk all the way. I live in New York City where the city is heavily relied on tunnels and subways, service is not always available underground. Because of this, cloud computing for music is a complete fail.
I know you're from Europe, but on the American side. Carriers like to put bandwidth limitations on our 3G/4G and even home broadband. If we exceed a specific limit, we get fined/charged/punished because of it. Another fail for cloud computing. If I have a 720p movie, I would rather have it stored on my hard drive than streaming it from a server.
@OP: Okay, we get your point. We respect your opinion, it would appear that your decision is final. So why don't you go back to the Nexus S forums instead of trying to justify your decision? I carry a media player and phone with me. I know its a huge inconvenience, but at the same time... a lot of battery is being used towards music, so I prefer having it on another device. That's another plus.

As far as reliability goes, I wasn't talking about cloud computing being everywhere right now. IT is out there, but not on global/efficient scale. But in a couple of years, with technology advancements, there won't be any more limitations to spectrum coverage, like in tunnels or areas with no/bad coverage. Also, probably no more bandwidth caps as well. So this IS the future, there's no point in arguing about it. Your point was if it's feasible right now. Well, so and so. You can still rely on Google Music if you want, because it has offline storage. And 3200 offline songs storage capability + streaming when you actually can (not in tunnels), can make your life easier, without the need of 64/128 GB storage. So you can still manage this, if you try; that's what I wanted to say.

People seriously need to stop underestimating the Galaxy Nexus hardware, I would dare to say it beats every other phone on the market.
Closest thing would be the iPhone 4S.
I don't know why google didn't make the GSM version 32 gb, but with Google Music you don't need to worry about storage space, when it comes to music at least.
Google Music and an unlimited dataplan works fine, or use spotify.

Yikes you listen to that much music with an mp3 player everyday? You must have no idea what damage you are doing to your stereocilia. Your threshold of activation of your stereocilia is probably permanently shifted by now. Pretty sad considering you are probably young yet sustained that much damage in a short amount of life span.
I highly suggest you take a college course on the anatomy of the ear and how hearing works. Once you realize how delicate your inner ear is, you won't be f*cking with nature by listening to that much direct ear damaging music.

The point is that if you're out and you don't happen to have a certain song you wanna hear on your phone, you can stream it.
It's not meant to be a total replacement.
look, the gnex is the best fone right now. period. and it will be. till the next nexus. get it and you wont regret. the camera and the display will just blow you away. then you will go to the bathroom and come back and turn it on and the display will blow you away again. wat can i say, it has been happening to me every time i turn it on for the past 4 days! Same as you, storage was the biggest concern for me too. But my music and gameloft games fit fine on it, as far as movies go, i just got a usb otg cable and use my existing usb key/microsd. problem solved. for regular use, i would say 32gb is perfect, but 16gb gets the job done quite well, plus usb otg for vids! and i turnd my fone on again and went "wow"!
Gsm its sexier than lte ...

I don't know why google didn't make the GSM version 32 gb, but with Google Music you don't need to worry about storage space, when it comes to music at least.
Google Music and an unlimited dataplan works fine, or use spotify.

I would say you are spot on here, but... I mentioned before that I spend 2 hours a day on the MRT. For those in the USA you would better know this as the Subway. The internet just isn't good enough for constant streaming while moving along in the train and we have TONS of people all checking the internet as well so that makes your speed go WAY down even when you are above ground.
Now that my phone (NS) has ICS I can see what kind of data google music is using, but I am a little sceptical that you can use google music and not go over your data limit for the month. I have a 12GB plan for data, but I am also sharing that data with my GT 10.1 and I watch TONS of YT videos while at work.
Now for everyone else. Don't get me wrong. I like google phones. I have owned the N1 and NS. I am ready for a phone upgrade now, but torn. I want the newest google experience phone. I prefer that to any of the UI addons that come from the manufacturers. I HATE touch UX on my GT 10.1 and I can't wait to get rid of it for CM9 (when it is out on my tab). I can wait if 16GB is all we get for storage. Maybe the 16GB version is all that will come out until Samsung gets the initial demand met and then we will see larger version like a 32 and 64GB model. (who knows right?)
My NS is currently sitting at less than 2GB of free space and my old GT10.1 (also 16GB) was sitting at about 1GB free after I put some cbt nuggets on it to watch while I am at work to prepare for a certification exam. I have since gotten a GT 10.1 (32GB) and I am not hurting at all for storage, but this is not practical to use as an MP3 player while working out...
So that's it. I am not dogging the hardware. I am just questioning the storage decision with more and more apps coming out that have extra downloads after installing the initial app you are going to need more and more space.

[Q] Data limiting?

Seems Im at 1.5gb of my 2gb cap already and I just paid my bill on the 16th. NO idea how I used THAT much data in such a short amount of time but w/e. I need a way to limit data use but not hinder text messages and such. I use wifi everywhere except to and from work.

Here's how to bypass that. Buy a Blackberry, activate it on your account (this will switch your data type in T-Mobile's system and effectively re-zero it), then after 24 hours, change back to your Android, and bang, you're back at a fresh start. Don't forget to return the Blackberry. You can do it sooner than 24 hours, just need to change out the phone in their system. I wait 24 hours so as not to raise suspicion.
Works.

Moving off the Nitro

Well the time has come for me to switch phones. It's been a good run with the Nitro. It's not the best Android phone I've used but its certainly the best screen I've used.
Thanks to all the people who have worked on Nitro development, especially RC. Also thanks to those early adopters of my ROM!

iPhone 5 but will be getting a Nexus 4 when there's supply
I'll be moving on as well to the Nexus 4. The Nitro has been a great phone for me and I may keep it around either for my wife or as something to play around with or maybe even to serve a dedicated purpose like a dash cam or gps.

I may not have been around when you released the initial custom ROM for the Nitro, but thank you for your contributions to the community. I plan on getting myself into the Nexus 4, as well, once supply is back.

I've been wanting to upgrade to either the S3 or the Nexus 4, but I'm having such a hard time deciding. The pros and cons of each phone makes it a hard decision. N4 doesn't have SD card expansion or LTE capability, but the S3's screen is mildly inferior (by the technical specs anyway) and the non-international version is only a dual core; not much different than our P930... The sad part is that after 3 hours of research I am still at a dead-even split between the two!
I'm going with Nexus 4 first of all because of the price. ($350, are you kidding me?) Secondly, I know I'll be able to hold down my storage usage if I offload my device backups, sync music to Play Music, use YouTube as the primary video source, and keep my podcast cache down (very tough lol, never enough time to listen to everything). I'm also getting a tablet which is what I'll be using primarily for video content. It's going to be tough, but I'll manage. I might just have to start using my various cloud storage options as well. With T-mobile, I'll be able to have unlimited data, so I shouldn't have any issues where I can't stream content.

I have a 32GB card right now that almost entirely consists of music and ROMS; both backups and the original zip. I only have maybe 5-10 pictures and no videos, but I use Ubuntu One for them anyway. I only have about 2GB free and I just don't see how I'd do it having 10GB LESS (SD card only registers 27.8GB available.) Eh, my brain hurts, I'm gonna go take an Aleve and rest before my head explodes.
I had a 32GB microSD card in my Nitro as well but I have since moved all of my music to Amazon Cloud (paid for the matching thing like iTunes Match). I then download a small subset of my music to the device to listen to without using data but can also listen to my entire library if I want to.

Yup.. just switched the to the Note 2. Amazing piece of engineering.

I haven't thought about doing that... I believe instead of making this hard decision I'm just gonna forget about it and stick with the current bread and butter until a decisively better choice becomes apparent.
Well for anybody in Canada and potentially T-Mobile in the US, there's some good news about the Nexus 4. It supports LTE on band 4 (1700/2100) with no hardware modifications. As I was planning on switching to T-Mobile anyway, I couldn't be more excited about this news
I have a 32gb too. Where I live, I can't consider cloud services too much because cellular data speeds are not really stable and my wifis are shared.

As a semi-new member to the Nitro HD just wanted to say Thank You for taking time out of your life to contribute to this phone!
Have fun with your iPhone 5 / Nexus 4!
Hope you enjoy your new phone. I enjoyed the nitro HD but switched out about 3 months ago when I switched companies. I now have have the S3 on simple mobile. I cannot count on the n4 as the storage options do not satisfy my needs. Well k hope you enjoy your new device!

It is a limited time offer and the offer ends by the end of this year! However, the 50GB storage space last forever.

Question Spotify Equalizer

Does anyine know how to use the Spotify equalizer instead of the Samsung one. It just seams like the Samsung one is a lot more quiet than the Spotify one was. Mostly listening on my bluetooth radio
You would need root to disable the systemwide Samsung equalizer. Worth it to you?
I'm so disgusted with Spotify. They seem TO WEEKLY be down for some nonsense "maintenance" and they restrict my amount of offline downloads.. Pretty crummy business. I can find all my music on Apple Music and can download an unlimited amount of albums and they are NEVER DOWN. Google music is what I used for years but they shut down and Apple is as close to that as I can get. #spotifyisajoke

Im serious about Spotify being PURE CRAP. They are highly over rated and obviously reading their own press releases. Spotify is terrible in the whole scheme of offering an entire scope of historical band's albums.. If you like all the nonsense "extras" (videos, partial albums, hits only, podcasts, playlists, etc) and ZERO FULL ALBUMS outside of the most popular ones then Spotify might be for you. If you like MUSIC and dont want to pay for one single song to complete an album, then there are better, cheaper, RICHER options out there. #Spotifyisforchumps
I have the family paid to use in my classroom, and share with the family.
Never have the weekly maintenance issue. They have bands I haven't heard since high school, as in they were local bands I saw live all the time.
Downside is that some songs are unavailable, and they don't really have a reason why. But it's few and far between.
I find it worth the cost.

LOL I was crazy hard on Spotify the other night. Yes, I'm sure plenty of people are happy but I really have a bad taste in my mouth about Spotify. Personally, I do NOT find it worth the money. Thats just me, of course. I know they're quite popular and I'm an old guy so I probably expect more from music than most people do today.
