What Am I Doing Wrong With MTP?

OK, I just don't get it. I've tried different PC's/Cables, etc. I have files/folders (mainly CWM, larger stuff) that will NOT drag and drop onto my PC from my GN. It makes no sense. I can view the virtual SD PERFECTLY FINE, but when I drag and drop, nothing happens. When I try to drag and drop certain things onto the virtual SD, half the time I get told that the device can't be found/has been disconnected.
I mean, this is a HUGE issue that I can't just drag and drop my entire SD Card to make a backup and then transfer those contents back on. What am I missing? I've tried connecting as MTP and PTP, makes no difference. Both of my boxes are Win 7. One is 32bit, the other is 64 bit. On top of that, I was just trying to transfer some data and the ENTIRE Virtual SD got deleted (luckily most everything was backed up). This is seriously borked. I've RTFM for days now and I can't find a solution.

Try reinstalling your drivers even if they installed fine.

Tried that. It's like the only solution is to reboot my PC. I'm fine with doing that, it's just general frustration with not understanding MTP. Is this a mass file header issue with data transfer? Something on my computer's end?

That's odd I've always been able to just drag and drop without issues in W7.

Use Airdroid from the market. It works.

I second this. I don't have any problems with MTP myself but for most file transfers it's just easier to turn on AirDroid than retrieving my usb cable and hooking it up that way.

We Need Custom ROMs with Mass Storage Mode Resurrected

I am so sick of MTP instead of Mass Storage Mode. I run Linux Mint and it's simply painful to try to get MTP working properly like Mass Storage Mode did in GB. Please, ROM devs, answer my prayers.

when you can add a sd card to the phone, you will have your mass storage.

I realize people don't like change, and want to stick with UMS, but you would have to pretty much crush the awesome single partition storage of the GN to get UMS...

Just dont understand why most people are aways want SOME MORE STOREGE, how many stuff you gonna put in your device? A thousand songs or pics?

With UMS enabled, they'd theoretically have lower storage than sticking with MTP. There would have to be at least 2 partitions that would mean files couldn't span across them.

I use wifi file explorer pro. Real easy and just as effective as having mass storage. Was bummed as far as me not being able to connect and drag/drop but when i found this app its just as good.

I can't for the life of me understand this complaint. I have no issues using MTP either in Linux or Win7. Do partition the space up would only bring about all the issues with inadequate space the Nexus One encountered.

I don't know if it's a MTP thing, but I'm having a hell of a time copying .mkv files to the phone. I can FTP to my Thinkpad Slate at 3MB/s via wifi, the GNex capps out at 400KB/s. I've tried to connect the phone via USB to my desktop and just drag and drop and the progress bar doesn't even move. This is driving me insane.
I'm using the latest GummyNex 0.6.6.
If I recall correctly, when I was using Android Revolution 2.1.2, it was copying at 2MB/s via wifi FTP. I guess I need to look into this.

Tried adbfs?
Looks like it solves your needs without introducing the troubles of mass storage mode.

I am using SAMBA...

airdroid also works well (ubuntu 10.04 and 11.10 on different machines, also better than mtp on vista for me)

it's been 8 hours and my music is still copying to my phone. MTP is completely unacceptable. it's already told me i had to skip like 30 songs before i hit "skip this message" 2 hours ago. i'm copying ~25 GB of music over and half of that is .ogg which is not natively recognized by MTP. I could have copied the 25GB onto my thunderbolt 10 times over already. I dont care what the reasoning, requirement, or intent was to remove mass storage, but it was not work it. watching my files copy at like 400 k/s to a phone plugged in with a USB 2.0 cable makes me want to return the phone.

Really? I use windows media player to sync my music and it flies. Way faster than my nexus one did. It takes about 1-3 seconds per track.

Drag and drop the files onto the folder icon. Don't open the folder itself and then copy into it.

My problem with MTP is compatibility. Hardly anything recognizes MTP and knows what to do with it besides my PC. Things I used to connect to via USB to transfer files or backup while on the go just don't work with the nexus. So instead of having an all around portable storage device in my phone I now have to carry other devices to perform those tasks, might not sound like a big deal but its just nicer being able to have that ability in one device. MTP may be great for some but not for everyone.

Agreed - my primary OS is linux, I can make mtp work kinda but it's poor and slow.
However enabling UMS would require repartitioning the GN and afaik no one's done it or said they plan on doing it.
Most people find wireless transfer much more satisfactory for this phone - I've only used airdroid but others have set up their own wireless ftp server. There are probably other apps that do it...

What is the MTP/PTP connection like?

I've read about this on the Galaxy Nexus but I'm not sure how it works. Is it like how my mom's Kodak point and shoot camera works, where it shows up as a device instead of a drive? Also where you can't show stuff like "size, date created, etc"?

It shows up like a camera, kinda. You can still get a "details" view of the files though in an explorer window (or with AFT on OSX).

I use OSX so sadly I am only able to share my experience from that perspective. I've only used MTP but when I connect it Android File Transfer comes up automatically. Its nothing more than a simple file explorer in which you can add or remove files but not move them around or anything like that. The big advantage of MTP however is that I am able to use the internal storage while the device is "mounted" on my computer.

It sucks a$$..just know that..I hate it its glitchy n slower than usb

what kind of slow are we looking at? i'm currently used to 2.5MB/s transfer speeds with my "class 4" MicroSD card on my Epic Touch 4G.

The transfer speed is the same... it's just USB2.0 speed. The tool/protocol in tandem with explorer can be kinda slow to respond though.
Using AFT on OSX, I've had no issues with speed. Its often even faster than UMS because there's no mount/unmount time.

My biggest gripe with AFT is that it crashes the USB stack on my MacBook Air, then the keyboard and trackpad stop working.
Anybody else have a similar issue?

AFT freezes every time I try to use it. I'm using Airdroid now and it works really good.

Its definitely finnicky. I do my best to unlock the device, plug in, transfer, and unplug. Get it done and get out!

My experience is it works great with Windows, but not in Ubuntu or Linux Mint & since I use Linux I don't like it. I use wifi explorer pro to transfer files.

I don't like it. I'm on Windows so it works naively. On my Galaxy S II you could just use a widget called Multi-Mount that allowed you to do the same thing, except they'd show up as normal drives (I say they because if you use the microSD slot in the S2, you get two drives, internal and microSD), not an MTP connection.
That's not the reason for using MTP though. MTP is being used because all of the device's memory is pretty much one one partition and anything beyond that is symlinked. So no more 2GB of app storage and 30GB of whatever. It's all app storage, file storage, etc. That's what makes the Galaxy Nexus's internal storage configuration different from any other phone's. They used MTP because, since the OS is also sharing the same big memory partition, it needs to be accessible by the CPU to continue running while you're transferring files.

And this is why Google is going with single partition storage w/o expandability and MTP transfer. It's the best overall solution.

There was nothing stopping them from adding a microSD card slot though. It could have showed up normally. Like I said, on my Galaxy S2, through a normal connection, I have two drives show up. One is for the microSD card slot, and one is for the internal 16GB storage. They're non-MTP.

But it'd be the same bad experience of having separate storage areas and having MTP for part and UMS for the other part. Its best to just keep it all internal and use MTP.

Its not slow... At least on OSX it's been just fine as I said before.

Works great in windows. Can't get it working in Linux at all.

MTP is fast for me.
I transferred 3gb of video in about 10 minutes. Its not revolutionary, but its not slow.

[Q] Unrooted S3 not recognized by Mac/Android File Transfer app

I tried going into "Media Device (MTP)" and then tried "Camera (PTP)". Neither seemed to work. Any ideas?
Specs: Mac OS X 10.7.4, 2008 pre-unibody Macbook Pro, unrooted T-mobile Galaxy S3 (white)

I tried for like 30 minutes to get my phone to work with a mac. Ended up using Airdroid and just transferring files over wifi.

I personally use wifi file transfer.

Thanks, Airdroid looks great. But for transferring large files, wi-fi is pretty painful. Just for the sake of brutal comparison, I found I was getting less than 1/10 the transfer speed (on video files 300-500mb) over wi-fi. Guess I'll have to get windows running on my mac again...unless there's a way to actually do file transfer over usb on my Mac..? (without cracking open my phone and removing the msd card)

I've run into the same issue myself. The phone is recognized, but nothing ever happens as far as the drives popping up.
Best workaround is to just use parallels if you have access to it...

Another option is to pull the SD card and plug that into your Mac. Luckily I have a PC as well so I don't have to come up with a workaround.

Question Transfer mp3 files from Windows computer to P6P?

I can no longer transfer mp3 files from my Windows computer to my P6P. I have moved plenty of music to internal storage, but now can no longer get anything over. Only the album folder shows up, but no contents. I believe I am doing everything correct with the USB cable, connecting and then selecting file transfer. This is a new development. Any suggestions? Very frustrated.

Yes, I see the Pixel internal storage in file manager, and all the music folders already there. Now when I try to transfer an album the new folder shows up but none of the mp3 files. Even when I then try to transfer the files individually

Question, are you transferring then unplugging to check if they transferred? Sometimes windows and android have a hard time communicating...this is jokingly called the "middle school dance" where both see each other but both don't make the first move to update what has been done.
Sometimes I transfer stuff but windows explorer never updates what has actually transferred.

Absolutely what @Gytole said. And it's not just Windows' built-in File Explorer. Other programs like GPSoftware's Directory Opus also have the same problem with views of the phone's storage across MTP.
@gmfeld Have you checked on the phone itself if you can see the files that you think you copied recently?

Yes I checked my phone after unplugging. Weird, the last time I tried 4 files transferred out of 20. I rebooted my phone I will try rebooting my computer

I've rebooted my phone and computer and have tried every way I can think of. Four out of 20 files were transferred to my phone internal storage and I cannot get the rest of the mp3 files of the same album to copy over. This must be new to me with the latest update.

I'll set a reminder for myself tomorrow to do some tests on my own Pixel 6 Pro. I've previously copied several hundred gigabytes of FLAC and MP3 files to my P6P, but that was many months ago.

Thanks. I also already have a lot on there, this is something new for me.

I've loaded mp3s on mine (through musicbee sync) on mays firmware so i don't think it's tied to that. Are you on May or one of the betas (june's or 13)
I also transfered boot to downloads via explorer but that was on april

I'm almost willing to bet it's a driver issue. Windows is NOTORIOUS for "Hey! I see you're working but let's go ahead and install a different driver cause I want to piss you off."
Legit happened to me after I updated Evo to version 3 yesterday. I went into the bootloader, updated the rom, and when I went to copy over the boot.img there was no "Picel 6 pro" in explorer...I had to open device manager and choose the middle MTP driver from the "choose from list" to get it to see my P6P again makes me wanna freakin hit a baby sometimes.

I was about to do the test, but was having some problems with MTP seeing the contents of a very deep folder structure of some of my FLAC files (which already exist on my P6P's internal storage), and then I remembered that actually, when I copy large amounts of and/or large sizes of files, I do so through an intermediary - usually a MicroSD card through a simple non-powered USB-C hub (using X-Plore File Manager).
Now that I've reminded myself of that, I don't even want to attempt to do the same kind of thing through MTP. It's painful and actually takes longer than copying to a MicroSD card first. Figures, eh?

Maybe ADB pull command works better.

I just was about to test Xender - Share Music Transfer, but connecting wirelessly to a PC requires enabling a hotspot on the phone and connecting the PC to the hotspot. Still worth testing, but I'll have to do that from a PC that my constant internet connection isn't critical on - so sometime later when I have time to do that.

This seems to be more common when the stock USB C to USB C cable that was included with the phone is not used. Granted, very few people have a USB C port on their computer right now, haha.
Anyway, I would have issues making 60GB video file transfers onto my phone - not because the phone wasn't showing up - but because the file transfer process would just randomly close explorer.exe on Windows after transferring a few files. Once I started using the stock USB C to C cable, this issue stopped occuring (and the transfers were much faster).
But, of course, if Windows isn't even detecting your phone you may have to install the Google Pixel USB driver (and also be sure to enable file transfer on your phone when you connect it to the computer).

So it's not an issue with my phone, as I'm able to transfer mp3 files from my work Windows computer to my P6P using a stock (non-Google) cable. Could it be some setting on my home Windows computer?

It's a driver issue on your computer. Remove the driver (uninstall it from device manager), restart computer and let it reinstall.
Don't install Google USB drivers since that's for USB debugging/fastboot. Let windows install the driver by itself.
If that doesn't work, there was a post someone made recently that shows how to reinstall the default windows driver, here.

Use Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, last FM, Pandora, YouTube music, apple music, etc etc

I think you mean usually illegal, which is of course nonsense. I only use local file and get them from amazon (and formerly emusic). I hate streaming because the ads (though youtube music inserts those in local file too) and data required
