[Q] Easy Root - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Does anyone know is there a one click root app out there for the GN yet? Will Unrevoked be doing a program for this? If not is there an word of one being done? It was made so easy for my DINC I would love to get my free tethering back.

here lets look at a pinned topic from the Gnex General board

and one from the dev board

Not really what Im talking about since its "it's a non permanent ADB root as it's a 'fastboot boot' and not a 'fastboot flash". I dont want to do this everytime I reboot plus it doesnt unlock the bootloader. Im wanting to know about a simple one step app that is permanent.

I think this is another case for a split forum. Unfortunatly the verizon nexus is different than the non-verizon.
I too am looking to root to get back my 3rd party wifi tether. as of now, I have found nothing that makes me think it is possible "today". Verizon has somehow locked the 3rd party apps. I am not a programer, or claim to be one; but I follow instructions well.
People need to say, I have verizon and I need this....XDA is world wide and people assume that when you are asking a question about a GN you are asking about the version they have and this forum is loaded with non-LTE information, with some LTE info hear and there.
If I find a LTE easy root I will gladly post it here

the insecure doesnt really matter. For what youre talking about it is a permanent flash you will not neet to re root everytime you turn on your phone. I superbooted yesterday. Im currently rooted and my phone has probably been restarted 15 times

It's pretty easy to manually root the LTE GN. The follow steps are for Windows.
Download this zipped package. It contains adb, fastboot, and Paul's unsecured boot.img that will install su and Superuser.apk for you.
Download ADB USB Drivers.
Step 1.) Unlock your bootloader. Put your phone into fastboot mode and install the ADB USB Drivers. Run fastboot-windows from the zipped package
Code:
fastboot-windows oem unlock
Step 2.) Put your phone back into fastboot mode if it reboots after unlocking. Then boot Paul's boot.img
Code:
fastboot-windows boot boot.img
Step 3.) Voila you're rooted... easy as pie.

That would be great if you find anything. As for saying that the superboot I guess ill give it a try. The post says that it will unroot (not sure how that works) on every reboot. Maybe im just not understanding it correctly

I followed this tutorial to set up fastboot and adb on my mac:
http://blog.wapnet.nl/2011/05/setup-adb-and-fastboot-with-android-sdk-on-mac-osx/
Then you just need the boot.img linked above and use the same commands(except use the mac fastboot that you set up earlier)
There were no drivers needed to be installed.

The commands are the exact same as the commands for windows except your fastboot probably isn't called fastboot-windows.

I found this guys and it seems to be the best and most straight forward guide to rooting the GN Ive found. Take a look http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-galaxy-nexus-rooting-roms-hacks/141563-guide-how-unlock-bootloader-root-verizon-galaxy-nexus.html
Also has a mac version along with video and other information.

Once you have fastboot loaded and the drivers, it's just a matter of booting to the bootloader and doing a fastboot OEM unlock. It should be no different.

OP:
No one will likely be doing a one-click system since this is a Nexus. Manual root is superior, and it is incredibly easy with some light knowledge of fastboot and adb. Honestly, I feel like if you cannot find your way around rooting a Nexus, perhaps you should not root it. An understanding of the system really comes in handy if you face issues.
Just unlock the bootloader using fastboot (there are instructions for this everywhere), then boot to an insecure boot.img of some sort (superboot is an option, I used koush's ClockworkMod image). Once you have this, you can use adb to push superuser to the system partition. If you overwrite the recovery, don't worry, because there is a script that will overwrite with the stock recovery after each boot.
If you want ClockworkMod permanently installed (as on your DINC, I presume) you will have to rename/remove the script. I have not done this, as I just re-flash ClockworkMod every time I alter something.
Hope that helps.

How to flash original ROM using Odin mode!!

Hey guys!!
I've been asked quite a few times, how to install the newest ROM for the GNex, the easiest way...
I've just tried it a few minutes ago, so I can tell you, waht it did and how to do it
Step 1:
Well, first things first;
you need the drivers. You'll want to download them from: here
Now, you need to download following file: Samsung official ROM
Step 2:
After you have downloaded both files and have installed the drivers, extract the firmware to a location, you can remember
eg.: %userprofile%\Downloads
Put the phone in Odin mode. Via USB Jig or VOL. DWN. + PWR. BTTN.
Once in Odin mode, plug phone in to computer via USB cable, wait for the drivers to install and then open the program. It may take up to 30 secs. to recognize the phone. Then click start. The flash process will take up to 3 Mins and will relock the bootloader, should you have unlocked it.
Final:
now just set your phone up and wait about five minutes, for the update notification to pop up... Now, everything is done, your phone is completely back to stock and nobody can tell you've messed around with it ^^
Though my personal favourite way of doing this, is with my root helper, but never mind about that (Click here to take a peek )
I hope you had fun doing this, I also hope you check out the 3rd link and I very much hope, I could teach you a bit more about the GNex ^_^
I am trying to follow your instructions but they do not work. After starting the drivers install, windows says it's installing drivers and then nothing happens.
Don't use ODIN. Follow any of the stickies at the top of the section on setting up adb and fastboot then flashing a factory build from there.

I've used both Odin and fastboot-method and have never had any single issue with them. Both works fine. If you have time to create tar packages everytime new factory image shows I don't see a reason why I should discourage you from using this tool.

Of course but when you reboot your Nexus into Odin/download mode it's technically no longer google's unique developer phone but it becomes a regular Samsung handset (with no download counter though). GNex is equipped with Odin mode not without a reason. This means manufacturer left the door open to use Odin flash as an alternative method. Of course it's not officially recommended but as long as it works fine as a second method I've got nothing against it. The more important here is whether odin flash is a safe and effective method. According to my experience.... it is. I mean I wouldn't recommend it as a primary method, but It's always good to know you have options just in case...
I use fastboot when I am on MacOS (definitely more often) and Odin whenever I flash firmware using Windows.

Oh that's what you meant. Sure. Well It's kinda obvious that u use it at your own risk just like rooting or flashing anything to your device. I think that everybody is aware of that including OP. No intention to sound ignorant or impolite but this lack of official support is irrelevant for me. If I brick my handset using Odin, cwm, RUU or fastboot it's only me to blame.

Doesn't mean you should recommend that somebody use what is, frankly, an inferior tool. Even a toolkit (I just threw up in my mouth a little) is better than ODIN.
Thing is, if I flash through Odin, I can't say I did, either to Google or Samsung. They will reply that the official tool to reset device to factory state is fastboot. There's not even a mention to download mode. Its a leaked tool, the only way I see Odin as an option is if fastboot isn't available. And even then, I would rather use either Heimdall (which i don't believe supports our device) or OMAPflash.
Sent from my Nexus
No no, as I posted earlier, the primary tool is of course fastboot. It's not like I recommend using Odin. I'm just not a big opponent cos I've never had any bad experiences using it and thus I don't understand this (forgive me expression) fear of using it. If anybody asks me I recommend fastboot at the first place. (It takes even more time to create tar.md5 package in cygwin than to flash every single .img via terminal to be honest) But sometimes people can only enter odin mode using usb jig. Then odin flash seems to be the one and only option.

I am not really proud of myself but why would you care about google or samsung, like honestly ? None of them will ever recognize the difference if you send your brick to their service center anyway ...and Heimdall is even less stable than Odin.
BTW. Did any of you notice that Odin flash unlocks your bootloader?

[N10] CF-Auto-Root

CF-Root is the root for "rooting beginners" and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root is meant to be used in combination with stock firmwares, and be the quickest and easiest way for your first root.
Donate
CF-Root has been available for many devices and has clocked over 9.5 million downloads. This is not even counting custom ROMs that already include it. Don't be a leech, buy me a beer (and use the "Thanks" button!). Imagine if every CF-Root user has donated me $1...
What's installed
- SuperSU binary and APK
- Nothing else, that's it.
Installation and usage
- Download the ZIP file (see post below for link)
- Extract the ZIP file
- Boot your device in bootloader/fastboot mode. Usually this can be done by turning your device off, then holding VolUp+VolDown+Power to turn it on.
- Connect your device to your computer using USB
- Windows:
--- Run root-windows.bat
- Linux
--- chmod +x root-linux.sh
--- Run root-linux.sh
- Mac OS X
--- chmod +x root-mac.sh
--- Run root-mac.sh
- Follow the on-screen instructions - watch both the computer and the device !
Note that if your device had not been unlocked before, this procedure will wipe all your data !
Are you having fastboot driver issues? You can find fastboot drivers in many places, but the easiest way is probably just installing the Android SDK.
Did you see the red Android logo during rooting, but SuperSU does not appear? This may sometimes occur due to left-over files and settings, however, you can usually install SuperSU from Google Play at this stage and it'll just work.
Not included - adbd Insecure
As this CF-Root does not include a custom kernel, adb shell does not have root access by default (you can still get it by typing su inside the shell), nor is adb remount supported, nor will adb push and adb pull work on system files. adbd Insecure can be used to remedy this situation. (No idea what this is about ? Don't worry about it !)

No, this does not unlock the bootloader it only gives you root acess and installs the SuperSu app. To unlock the bootloader you must use fastboot and type the command:
fastboot oem unlock
I would suggest taking a look at mskip and wugfreshs toolkits located in the original development and development section of the nexus 10 forums respectively for a simple way to unlock your bootloader.

Good to see nexus 10 getting all this support from Android gurus here on xda ...but again it's a nexus device ...me glad I bought it ...extremely happy with my purchase thanks chainfire for this easy root method as usual it works
So if this doesn't unlock your device, why does the OP state:
Note that if your device had not been unlocked before, this procedure will wipe all your data !?
Does rooting/installing SU wipe this device?
His previous version didn't wipe the device, so I'm guessing this one doesn't either
Didn't need to unlock boot loader to root

now its stuck at waiting for device
when i plug in my n10 on bootloader screen, i hear the bad connection to usb sound, the 3 note sound, not the usual 2 note sound when i the connection is good.
but i am still able to see my n10 when i boot it up normally and can transfer files etc
am i missing something?
Thanks for this tool, works perfectly.
I'm also stuck on "waiting for device" also. any way around this?
Edit: Downloading and installing full drivers fixed it.
Big thanks, I was stuck in a bootloop, but this got me out of it!

Latest update MHC19J how to flash twrp

So I just got my nexus 5x and it looks like I cant just do the simple fastboot oem unlock and then flash twrp image, which makes me sad (I thought unlocking your phone was pretty much a red flag for "im going to do things to you" so why all the new "security" measures?). Since I'm on the latest update MHC19J, and it seems a modified boot image is not available (unless Im just overlooking it) am I just kinda stuck at the moment until said image is available? (sans the "yeah you could just modify one yourself" comment).
What are you talking about? Before unlocking have you checked OEM unlocking from Developer tools? After this you need to flash Twrp, boot into it directly from bootloader and flash SUPERSU. That should be the minimal steps in order to keep the custom recovery in place.

Supersu modifies the image itself.

I should have included in my post that Im only seeking help after reading everything I could find and still being at a loss. Perhaps i misunderstood the directions, or maybe the fact that Im not looking to root my device, only flash twrp and move to a custom rom right away, that Ive overlooked a step as ive ignored all the rooting steps.
So this guide says to just unlock your device (i have) and then just run fastboot flash recovery twrp.img (also did this) and I should be good (it didnt work, it gave me that warning screen).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206930
This guide looks slightly different:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/guide-how-to-install-custom-recovery-t3231143
1]Unlock bootloader- fastboot oem unlock [select yes by pressing volume up and then power button to confirm]
2] Reboot & skip everything in setup as we data will be wiped again!
3] Reboot into bootloader & flash the modified boot image- fastboot flash boot boot.img (This is the part that im asking about as there doesnt appear to be a modified image for me to flash)
4] Reboot into system to make sure it's booting properly! [May not be necessary!]
5] Reboot into bootloader again & flash twrp- fastboot flash recovery "recovery name".img
This is really what I want to achieve. Disabling Encryption and flashing TWRP so I can flash a custom rom. Not interested in the slightest about rooting a stock rom.
So thats where im stuck,no worries, I did attempt to RTFM :]

You're not following the right guide. You don't have to bother with encryption, just use the latest twrp after unlocking the bootloader and flash that IMG file in fastboot. Twrp works with encryption now you don't have to decrypt

Thanks for the reply. I wonder what went wrong the first time though. Cause i did unlock the bootloader, rebooted and let android load, rebooted into bootloader and flashed twrp 3.0.0.0 and it gave me a weird "cannot be verified" message when I tried to boot into recovery.

That happens on Nexus phones. Just give it a second and it'll boot up. It's just a warning telling that you unlocked the bootloader. Make sure you're using the very latest version of twrp available in the site, it ends in a 1 I believe

Disabling encryption does give you a speed increase. It may or may not be noticeable for your use but the majority can see the difference.
So you have to decide between security and a snappier phone.
Just remember to back all your data up as this requires wiping your data and possibly a clean flash and either switching from the stock rom to another rom(Most have the forced encryption disabled) or when on stock rom either flash another kernel or flash supersu in systemless mode.
Hotspot need it Help! Nexus 5x
Ok, so I have a Nexus 5 and a Nexus 5X. I want to keep the Nexus 5x because has more features, but I cannot share the data from my provider cricket wireless (AT&T).
I have the option to return it or find a solution. I am pretty stubborn which means FIX IT. I have the March 1 2016 Update and this MHC19J shows up in the build version... I am under linux, last time I did this was well long time since 2013 for the nexus 5. Can some one help me with a guide for linux.
THANKS A LOT!!!

Swift 2 Plus won't boot, stuck with locked bootloader

Please don't ask why (the answer will be: "because I'm stupid"), but I relocked my bootloader and now my Swift 2 Plus won't boot anymore. When turning it on, it vibrates and the Wileyfox logo flashes for less than a second. After that the screen stays black and nothing happens. Same thing when I try to boot into recovery. I can only boot into the bootloader but I can't flash any images or unlock it again ("FAILED (remote: oem unlock is not allowed)").
Is there any way I can revive my phone or is it lost?
I think your only way is to flash twrp again with fastboot install method :
//twrp.me/devices/wileyfoxswift2.html
And then flash the stock rom :
//cyngn.com/support
hope it will helps you!

Sorry, I'm a new user so I can't post link, you've just have to ad "https" at the beginning of the line.
Thanks for answering, but I can't do that, because the bootloader is locked and protected from unlocking. I guess the only thing I can do is ask the support if they can provide the mbn and xml files that are needed for unbricking with QFIL (I can boot into edl mode as I recently found out). They probably won't but it's worth a shot.
If you use the signed zip ( not the fastboot image) the default recovery should be able to install it.
It doesn't boot to recovery. Only fastboot and edl mode work.
You could try flashing fastboot image from http://cyngn.com/support
Sent from my Swift 2 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Thanks, but that doesn't work with a locked bootloader (already tried).
It seems like the only way to revive it is with QFIL, but for doing that it needs the matching mbn and xml files that aren't included in the factory images. Wileyfox support wasn't helpful, either.

Can't we put the dirty cow bug to a use now? It should work on the phone unless it has the latest security patches, right? And with root privileges you should be able to flash a new recovery or reset the phone.:fingers-crossed:
I'm actually not sure, if I still have root privileges. It could be that I turned it off inside the SuperSU app.
I tried to flash the stock rom and that didn't work, though. Do I have to do something different than usually to flash with root privileges?

I read a little about dirty cow, now (didn't know much about it before), but if I understand it right, I need adb to upload files onto the phone, right? Sadly, adb doesn't work. Only fastboot :/
Hmmm, there is a similar thread for the Nexus 5X. You might want to check it out if you haven't already ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/help/nexus-5x-permanently-bricked-locked-t3232105/page2 ).
A few of the suggestions were to try with:
Code:
fastboot flashing unlock
or
Code:
fastboot format userdata
fastboot format cache
I don't know if it will be of any help but it is worth a shot.
You could try to flash individual portions of the stock image like the recovery or the userdata but I doubt that it will be successful.
PS: From the thread above, for some reason removing the SIM card allowed them to enter recovery.
Thanks, but none of these solutions works. Already tried all of them a couple of times....
Hmmm, how about you try to trick it then?
Grab the official signed firmware, place it on SD Card and try with:
Code:
fastboot update <path/to/zip>
or this one to try to wipe the device? (dunno if the command is still in use, though)
Code:
fastboot -w
If this doesn't work as well, I guess it will be a waiting game for QFIL files.

I tried to flash/update every official rom (with and without -w) there is, but I never put it on an SD-card. Does that make a difference? If so, this might be one ofhe stupidest mistakes I ever made :/
I'll try in a few days. Not much time, at the moment...
Yes... Waiting for QFIL files is what I'm prepared for...
The idea with the SDCard is just a random thought. There is a slight chance to trigger the allowed update policies.
Usually you place the update.zip through adb (not possible in this situation) but placing it on the sdcard is possible.
Still, QFIL is the safest bet once someone uploads the files.

That's what I thought. Since I couldn't find any (yet), is there a way to extract the QFIL files from a working phone (I bought another one since I needed a phone)? I don't think so, but I hope I'm wrong...

I'm in the same boat here, same phone and same issue. Did you find a way to fix it? already searched all internet for a fix. Thanks a lot
Sorry, but for some reason I never saw your answer... I never found a solution either, though
how to unlock bootloader
Use fast boot to unlock the bootloader again.
connect your Swift 2 to your PC and in a command prompt type the following "fastboot oem unlock"
When you press enter, check the phone and using the volume keys you need to select yes and then press power to execute.
Your bootloader should then be unlocked again. Good Luck.

just flash twrp . lost fastboot

just got my pixel xl today. unlocked the bootloader fine.
next step flash twrp. i fastboot boot twrp img. temp twrp , installed the zip.. i reboot to recovery. that where everything F up.. now i can not get into fastboot.. is there a way for me to get fastboot mode back ??
never mind just had to reboot the phone 3 times..

I can put the phone in bootloader but now my phone is not recognised by the computer. The first time I connected the phone he asked me what to do and I said transfers data. But now I cannot do anything.

Hello,
You need to read this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...signing-boot-images-android-verified-t3600606
The thread contains a zip (verified boot signer v2 zip) that you must install right after you install the TWRP zip on latest May version...
This is weird your phone is not recognized while in bootloader.
Boot the bootloader and issue:
fastboot devices
Does it output your serial number in the command prompt?
Good luck...

Thank for your answer. The real problem was that in fastboot the phone is not recognised. There were no serial number. And I write in past because I could made it work.
I am very happy you worried about me. You have a new friend in Spain.
Thanks.

Hey,
No problem. Glad you solved it by yourself anyway. What was the issue? Maybe others with the same problem could benefit from your experience?
Why your computer didn't recognized your phone while in bootloader?
Cheers...

I really don't know the problem. I was just about to cry when I saw a post about skipsoft toolkit. And I thought why not to try. I installed that software in other pc, follow the instructions and now I am here again.
Yesssss!!!!

You shouldn't be modding you're device if you have to rely on a toolkit to save you. What if there wasn't a toolkit. You'd be SOL.
I highly recommend you learn how to use fastboot and adb, and do this stuff the right way. I'm not trying to be mean or anything. I just would hate to see you brick you're device. These pixel phones cost way too much to be screwing around with if you don't know what you're doing.

Thanks. I am trying to learn. Not only fastboot or adb. English too. But sometimes I am a bit risky or only stupid.
By the way, recommend me a post or a place to learn.

Honestly the best way I found to learn adb and fastboot is YouTube. It's so much easier to watch how to do it. Thats how I learned. There's also @Heisenberg 6p guide. That can get you all setup for adb and fastboot too. It's very comprehensive.
