I have vertical and horizontal banding too. But this one is something what is bothering me much more.

That's nothing to do with the Pentile Matrix! Definitely a defective screen, return it to the store and ask for a warranty replacement. The 'banding' is more to do with the AMOLED screen technology rather than the Pentile, as it was present on my SGS2, but is generally only visible under certain conditions (background colour/brightness).

Sure, on blue background too,sometimes on white.(poarws photo with blue background) It depends on brightness.
More visible at white background with high brightnes.
More visible at blue and grey background with lower brightnes.
It does have to do with the Amoled technology, but I doubt it's a defective display. You can try to exchange it to see if it really is defective or not.
I have some vertical and horizontal banding only with lowest brightness at the white background.
With maximum brightness no lines or whatever
AMOLED has a few imperfections here and there, so it's not surprising. But if it's bothering you too much exchange it for another one, it could have less prevalent issues.

Try viewing those shades of grey on your phones, it's usually the most problematic color. Use a low brightness setting (around 25%) at a dim environment.
This exists on all OLED screens. Its the exact same on my Nexus S. It has nothing to do with pentile matrix, but OLED.

I have the Galaxy Note and it has the same panel as the Galaxy Nexus albeit at 1280x800 instead of the Nexus's 1280x720. (Super AMOLED HD with Pentile sub-pixel arrangement)
My screen is great. The whites are brighter than they were on the Nexus. The Nexus displayed whites with a yellowish tint especially on low brightness. Plus I can't seen any banding on the screen and I have tested it on White, Red, Blue, Green and Grey backgrounds.
Im getting a new Galaxy Nexus in a couple of days. Since this unit is from a later batch I hope that there is no banding on the screen too.
Funny, I have a similar issue to Delarock's on my Galaxy S2, manufacturing date is 19th of October. I'm still thinking whether to replace it or not since since it's only visible on dark'ish grey, I couldn't replicate it on lighter greys, white, or any other color at various brightness settings.

so I always set up my phone to the hightest brightness
Hard for me to get a good photo but you can see the same problem on my NEXUS S screen. Its just a characteristic of OLED displays in general.

Really similar to the screen on my new Galaxy Nexus. I didnt notice the diagonal right away but that is certainly more significant. My screen a rosy hue in the bottom half and especially the lower left.
I'd love to see a similar picture of someone who says that their screen doesn't have it.

So are some of these screens defective? Or is it really just the nature of the beast?
How does one tell what manufacturing date their device was made to? Would I be able to go to a store and exchange for a datecode that shows no banding issues?
I am having the same issue ... another thing I notice is weird issues with the camera while in a dark room. If I have my camera on in a low light room, I get this weird "dancing" of black blotches in the really dark areas of that room.
I like all solid black wall paper, I find the fastest easiest way to get it is to turn off the camera flash, put my finger over the lense and take a pic. Worked for every other phone I have but the GNex. I get a weird blotchy image ... now I am on GNex#3 (other 2 I returned for different issues) and I have noticed this camera thing on #1 and now #3. With the first one I assumed this was normal ... but after going from the second one to the third I see a HUGE difference in screens. With phone #2 I was able to do the phone/black wallpaper with no weird distortion. Now the really strange thing is that that same pic taken with the second phone (that displyed pure black on that device) shows up blotchy on device 3.
Hope this makes sense to someone lol cuz reading it back I sound crazy.
I just hope the folks at the Verizon store don't give me a hard time trying to get another one!

Hi all,
Has anybody else noticed a yellowish tint to their screen, especially when displaying lighter colours, white, light blue etc?
This only seems to be the case when looking directly at the screen. If I look at it from any sort of angle the yellow tint is not there.
Any info or confirmation that others are experiencing this too would be much appreciated. If this is a hardware issue then I will return my phone.

Mine is quite yellow too against my S2. Decided it must be faulty and it's going back.
Going to stick to my S2 with Cyanogen as it's much better...
When I go into my settings screen it has a yellowish tint in the bottom half of the screen where the top half is black.
When I go into my app drawer the background is black as it should be.

I have not noticed any yellow screen in the settings menu myself.
I have been reading that the Galaxy SII had similar yellow tint problems when released and that it was corrected with a software fix?
I'm more worried that this isn't a hardware fault more than anything, software faults don't worry me too much as I'm happy to wait for a fix...comes with the territory when owning a smartphone
Think I will be returning my handset, the yellow tint combined with the volume problem is doing my head in!
I have been watching a few you tube clips and i don't see much yellowish tint on theirs but then again it does go completely black in the app drawer.
It really doesnt faze me as much as the volume issue though.

I don't really know what to say, but let me give you my 2 cents.
First, AMOLED screens are all different for some reason, and I can vouch for this as I replaced my Nexus one 9 times for power button and various other issues, and each time the color temperature was different. Some were warmer (with a red tint) while others were cooler (blue tint). If you swap it, you might get a better tint, maybe even white if you're lucky.
Second, the Nexus S also had a tint problem (yellow tint) just like yours. The two display models at my BestBuy both are VERY YELLOW compared to my HTC Sensation and look really bad, but it might be because their screens were ruined from being on for so long. There was a post on XDA in the Nexus S forums who said he swapped until he got a "white tint" but then Google actually updated the Nexus S with different Color Settings and totally washed out his screen, while yellow tinted ones actually got better. If Google releases a color patch, you might not like it, but I don't think they will after the backlash from the Nexus S one.
tl;dr Get it swapped, it's a hardware issue. Swap until you get one you like, you paid for it, you deserve it.
Oh geez here go again, i thought the yellow tint was going to die with the galaxy s ii, guess not, it's alive again on the galaxy nexus , i swapped my galaxy s ii because the yellow tint was too distracting, in low "backlight" the white looked yellow , the one i got is less yellow but the colors dont pop as much as on the first galaxys ii i had

You're going to want LCD if you want perfection, but you'll give up great blacks and thinness+battery life, not to mention the phone entirely.
Keep swapping, took my 9 tries but it was worth it for my Nexus One

I've got the same 'issue'. While I understand it is a feature, it really looks odd/very greyish, especially on auto brightness.
BTW I'm starting to like that yellow tint. It really is helpful when browsing the Internet, because it's more pleasant for the eye.

The Galaxy Nexus screen looks so yellow compared to iPhone 4S display
It looks like he has auto-brightness enabled on the Galaxy Nexus.. it looks yellower unless you turn up the brightness.
The whites on the iPhone 4 are ridiculously clean and white, no phone compares to it. The blacks on the Nexus are also ridiculous and no phone (except other Super AMOLED phones) compare to it.
Take your pick, better whites, better blacks. The iPhone screen is still tops, but it's small. I have an iPhone 4 and a Nexus (just sold a GS2).
If I compare the screens side by side, then yeah, the utter blinding white of the iPhone 4 makes the Nexus white look kind of eggshell white, just not as bright or crisp. But using the Nexus on it's own and it's fine, white looks white enough when not being compared to the iPhone. The colors on the nexus are much more vivid and true to life than on the iPhone.
Nexus also has crisper text than on the iPhone 4 believe it or not. There is no perfect screen, all have +'s and -'s, you just have to pick which +'s you like best. For me it was the insane resolution, size and color accuracy of the Nexus. It's plenty bright, just not plenty white when compared to the ifruit.

definately noticed the yellow tinge... bloody Samsung!
actually the yellow issue on the GN appears to be because of the colour profiles that have been set in a similar way to how google updated the nexus S and altered the colors.
in AMOLED screens overtime the colours actually fade and become less vibrant now blue usually goes first and is at a much faster rate than the other colours.
considering that this fading occurs perhaps they deliberatly make the colours a bit 'warmer' to offset the blue fade time.

its quite possible that the tints that are experienced on oled devices are probably deliberate to offset the problems with oled technology.
how many have devices like this? It doesnt seem to disappear on mine until about half brightness up.. and even there i can slightly tell. is this a problem on most phones or only some? Also with light usage i'm losing over 10% per hour, doesnt seem right at all
All AMOLED screens have that issue at low brightness, it just varies from phone to phone. Give it a few charge cycles before you start looking at the battery. The battery on my Nexus drained extremely quickly when I first got it but it's been lasting longer and longer with each passing day (3 so far)
My screen is the same, you need to be at half brightness to get a decent image. Auto brightness in full darkness makes you think that the screen is totally broken.
yours has like bands of a different shade too? mine has one thick one on the right of the screen and it's pretty annoying.. about to go into the city tomorrow to exchange it but if there all like that then i dont know

Would it even show in a screenshot? Yes, it's AMOLED... that's the way it is. More than worth it.
It wouldn't show in a screenshot since this is a hardware related issue. And I don't think it's normal if it has brighter spots like explained. Mine isn't as smooth as you would expect either at lower brightness levels but it is not like explained by the OP.

All SAMOLEDs sacrifice clarity and color representation for slightly better black levels. Just the nature of the screen technology. All 4 Samsung models (and all 7 phones) I've come across have it.

I've never seen the banding effect before, and this is coming from someone in a household with two out-of-commission Galaxy S', two GSIIs, a Focus, and my Nexus. The PenTile screen door effect can get to me if I'm looking for it, but that's the only SAMOLED issue I'm familiar with.

Not only is mine grainy at low brightness, it also has a pink and green tinge (in opposite sides of the screen)
It doesn't seem to happen on the 1st gen AMOLED (Nexus one, not grainy at low light) or S-AMOLED (Galaxy S, it did have an overall blue tint, but it was on the WHOLE screen)
Not completely noticeable, but would have expected better. At 40% or higher, its barely noticeable.
Got the same problem 40-50% and its barely noticable, any lower and i can see much distortion.
I know its a hardware thing but is this something that might be fixed with a future update or are we stuck with this?
The screen will look grainy on white/grey backgrounds at lower brightness settings, but there should not be any vertical/horizontal banding on the screen.
My first phone had a vertical bar of banding going down the entire screen, and bothered the crap out of me. Went in this morning and had it swapped with a Nexus that has no issues. For the price that we're paying for this phone (especially those with International unlocked imports) it better be perfect.
yup, i only ever see it in one place (the grain), and thats on the store before anything loads (an all gray background). Don't see it on white or anything else... that i know is pentile.
Galaxy Note is similar at lower brightness levels, must be AMOLED.
iPhone 4S is best if reading at lowest brightness levels is very important,
but in brighter light the Nexus and Note look amazing.
Just got my VZW galaxy nexus, and im loving it so far, but have noticed something odd: toward the top of the screen (about 1/4 of the way down from the top) there seems to be a very slight green tint, noticeable only when looking at a dark background (like the settings menu).
It's kind of hard to explain, does anyone else have something similar on their phones? Is this normal for amoled screens or should I ask for a replacement phone?
i believe it has to do with it being a pentile screen... well, 'HD' pentile, but still..
i'd say if you try an exchange, make sure you the test the other in store first.

Pretty sure the setting menu is a background gradient with an intended color shift.
But yeah, mine has a blueish/greenish hue if I tilt the phone away or towards me in portrait mode. Straight-on, I don't notice anything.

that settings menu then scroll all the way down is normal.. the color is not as dark as the top. I'm seeing greenish tint when on white background
I have a very light greenish tint on the right side of the phone on white backgrounds with text when at low/automatic brightness. The green goes away when I bump brightness to 40%+.
Did you try that?
Oddly, when I ran pixel checker, the pure white background has no green tint to it at all.
Yeah, at low brightness I see a tint/haze but at full brightness, everything looks beautiful.

I see the same green tint on my screen. I thought it was normal, but I compared it to another unit today and saw that my display was both dimmer at the same brightness level and had a greenish cast and different color temperature than the unit I was comparing it to. I'm not sure if this is within the normal variance for these displays, but my phone certainly looks worse to me than the one I compared it to.
Both units also showed a green/blue tint when viewed off axis but with greater discoloration on mine. The second unit showed almost no discernible tint when viewing a white screen straight on unlike mine.

i have the same problem. Sometimes (usually after a power down and restart) my entire screen is very dark and has a, very obvious, green tint to it. I compared my phone to my girlfriends at the same display setting and the tint is very obvious (especially when i'm viewing menu, text messages, browser). When i adjust the brightness it seems to make it less obvious, but still there. However after certain power down and restart this "green tint" seems to 'go away' only to either gradually re-appear or just happen when my phone self adjusts to "automatic brightness" setting.
p.s. my phone also, had another minor issue of random re-start when listening to music (via google music) and adjusting the sound effects option. After that restart my phones display was significantly tinted and dark. Weird, Either way getting a replacement unit tomorrow.
Mine has a very slight green tint on the left hand side of the screen when at the lowest brightness and viewing a white background.
I normally have the brightness bumped up a bit, but it still bugs me when I have it low
EDIT: Checked pixel checker, has the green tint. I can definitely see it on the keyboard as I'm typing this though

yeah i got mine replaced the next day, all good now. No green tint, reduced banding, and much better viewing angles (the first one heavily tinted green or pink colors when viewing it from the right or left side, respectively)
Alright, got a replacement today.
No green tint that I can see, almost no banding and the colors don't change like, at all when I tilt the phone.
Now my nexus truly is perfect

Sorry, I find this very hard to believe. *ALL* pentile AMOLEDs change colours like crazy when you look at them at a sharp angle. It's a characteristic trait of this kind of display.

Yeah, I was exaggerating, but compared to how bad it was with the other one its crazy. Very less noticeable than my first one

And second of all, there are "really black" dots and lines across what is supposed to be "pure black" but is somewhat pinkish (like i said). Also, this effect, of having a darker line, can also been seen with say, dark blue on screen in a completely dark room.
This effect is not noticeable when white or other colours are on screen. I'm really sorry but I can't show you a picture of this because obviously a screenshot captures the digital signal and not the physical output and I don't have a good enough camera to take pictures of what I'm saying in complete darkness.

you did not use the search function: i personally wrote a huge amount of posts regarding this, also in the note1 section!
search for "black blotches" or take a look at my posts. really lots of them are about this!
in short:
its manufacturing dependant and its luck of the draw to get a "good" screen!
samsung lives with this as not many customers complain(ed) about it, as most of them do not even notice it!

Mine is pure back at full brightness when seen in a dark room (no pinkish hue or any line that you mention). And Note 2 screen doesn't even have the infamous black clipping/crushing issue like its predecessors! Blue colour also good, no issues for me.
No, it is definitely not an AMOLED feature or drawback (never seen it on any other AMOLEDs either)! Of all other aspects samsung SAMOLED screens are known to have the deepest blacks (with best contrast ratio). Sure, it sounds like you have a defective screen, and my suggestion would be to get it checked up at SC for replacement.
i also have a similar issue on my note 2. a black screen is not completely black, but a brownish black. And i can see 3 (or more) dots which are completely black.. i can see this only in a dark room, so normally this is not an issue. But when i read kindle in my bed with dark background, this really bothers me. initially i thought this was some smudge on the screen. im sad to hear that other people are also having this issue..
I had the black dots on my galaxy s2 ... but not my note ... The screen on my note has none of that sooooooo happy about that it really is just luck of the draw ....

im only worried if it will grow in time. like a dead pixel in an LCD screen, if this phenomenon spreads to the neighboring pixels over time, then its a very bad thing... otherwise, i am not bothered at all..
We need this thread each time there is a new phone which amoled screen? ..
The sgs2 has this as well as the sgs3 the note 1 etc.
it's not a defect, it's a limitation of amoled screen production.

Sorry, what you say here its not possible! EVERY amoled 'suffers' from this ('cause it CANNOT display 100% blacks, due to it's active matrix)! If you won't see it it's because of a wrong method or your eyes!

Hey everyone,
I got my black AT&T Note 4 earlier today. I noticed the lower half of the screen is slightly darker, and has a slight pinkish tint on a white screen.
I do notice it in some apps, like Kindle when readinga book. Top of screen is slightly brighter, and when background is white there's a very slight pink tint.
Is that normal? Or should brightness be uniform and no tint?
EDIT: I added a photo. It's not a good photo but you can see how one side is tinted differently. In the photo the brighter top looks greenish but in real life it's not green. You can also the slight pinkish tint in the bottom half, which is the left side of the photo.
I wouldn't want to comment based on the image you uploaded directly since how a camera captures a digital display is much different than what the naked eye will see. If the picture on the panel is not consistent and appears polarized in any way, I would consider that to be faulty. Get it replaced.
Galaxy Note 4 (pink tint lower screen)

I have also noticed a pink tint on the lower half of the screen on new Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
As i intend to do a lot of drawing on this device the tint is unacceptable.
I wonder if there is a way to calibrate the display?
I had this issue with my Galaxy S3 display. I had at&t exchange it.
Have this same issue on my Note 4. Posted some pics over in the thread on this topic for the Note 3 before I thought to check here. Basically there's a brightness and gamma gradient from top to bottom. The top half is perfect and the bottom half gradually fades to a point where you lose the first 8-9 squares on the lagom.nl black level test.

And here's one on a white background. At first it seems like a white point issue (which I would tolerate since it's common on IPS as well), but it's a brightness gradient:
Between this and the fact that AT&T disabled the slider for auto brightness I'm a little frustrated with this supposed best smartphone display ever (I realize this second issue isn't Samsung's fault, but the auto brightness is unusable without that feature). I bought the phone at Best Buy which is mostly out of stock right now so an exchange isn't likely, assuming they even take this seriously as an issue.
My note 4 does not display this issue.
No issues here. Display looks very consistent.

Have you tried a dark background in a dark room? For me it wasn't that obvious until I did this (was messing around in Sketchbook). If the majority of screens are better than mine I'll definitely be trying to get a replacement as this is bothering me.
I just installed Lux to resolve my backlight issue and its settings menu background fades nearly entirely to black at the bottom.
*Edit: So far it sounds like this is an anomaly. You would expect places like Anandtech to report on it if they'd seen that amount of variation. I'm going to have a good time trying to convince someone at BB that this is a real defect though.

I got a replacement and it's perfect. No pink tint.
So, if you have the tint return it. Not all Note 4s are like that.

Thanks, that was quite helpful. I think in general it's easier to trust reviews on retail-purchased devices over mainstream reviews with PR department selected units.
I went to BB today and looked at the display units. All perfect, but then that's not surprising (every company gives their display/review units a second QC pass, even Apple). I'll probably head to the only BB in the area that has units tomorrow and see if I can do an exchange. As long as they don't make me sign one of those "no more returns" agreements I've heard about I'm willing to take another shot in the display lottery.

Good to hear! I'll post my results after my exchange attempt tomorrow. Aside from the gradient I am impressed with the display. Not as bright as LCD in daylight, but I was drawing on a black BG last night and noticed that it has deeper blacks than my Pioneer plasma.

Fingers crossed for you to get a nice one like mine.
Yeah, the blacks and colors are amazing on the Note 4. The whites are not as bright as the iPhone 6+, but they are fine and way better than whites on my Note 2. In all other respects the Note 4 screen is overall better than even iPhone 6+'s excellent LCD.
One minor disappointment is the very high resolution has made some emulators dog slow as they attempt to render at full resolution, i.e. PPSSPP and ePSXe using ogle renderer. Hoping the devs find a workaround, maybe rendering at half or quarter rest instead - that would still be higher rest than my Note 2 at full rest. :laugh:
What's the color of your device? Anyone have this problem in the white version?

I have the same problem on my Verizon white note 4 but on top half of display. Replacement should arrive by Friday :/
You can replicate this by looking at the screen at an extreme angle, obviously the ones that see green and purple straight on are screen defects.
I have a white version and whites are perfect and too bright at high setting. I keep mine half way. The whites are better IMHO than the iphones. The colors more vibrant and, the sharpness is ridiculously sharp. I dont see how they can improve it. I only thing there should be a waynto adjust the color saturation, because basic mode doesnt do much on mine.
My Note 4 has the same issue. It almost looks like the while balance differs from top to bottom, but it is really the brightness that is different.
This is a photo of my Note 4 showing a solid colored image at #030303 (very close to black). It shows how different the pixels in the bottom and in the top emit light.

I have a similar issue, though mine is brighter on the right side than it is on the left. Very noticeable with dark background in lower light situations as someone else mentioned.
