[Q] Telus Phone, do I need to flash different radios? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says, I have the Telus Desire HD on the telus network, just rooted it and installed the leedroid rom.
Now it recommends that I flash the new radio to it, but I've seen radio's that are Telus specific out there, do I need to use one of those? If so could anyone point me in the direction of the newest one/one I should use?
I've found these two pages with telus radios...

Thanks for bearing with me, still pretty new at this.
Also, found this post which seems to be sating that the radio in the first link there could cause sound problems..

I have a HTC Desire HD from telus also but have not updated te radio. I have used my handset perfectly here in Canada on all the carriers and also in Europe. IMO there is no need to flash the radio as it works just fine. Unless there is something I am missing.. someone please chime in. OP where are you located?

Well agreed, It's probably not necessary... but if it can benefit in any small amount, if i know something will work, I might as well. Works perfectly here on the west coast, but as I said,if it can improve battery life, and maybe get more coverage, I may as well.

Can anyone help me out on this?

Bumping it one last time hoping someone has an answer..

Just my personal opinion of changing the Radio, I live in Penticton BC and I run a DHD from Telus on Telus and I just recently flashed from stock radio to the recommended radio from ARHD which is 12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M. I went from H "1"-2 bars Yellow -101dBm 6asu / 3G "2"-3 bars Blue -108dBm 4asu and stayed mostly on 3G not by choice, to H "3"-4 bars Blue -94dBm 8asu/ 3G "4" bars Blue -87dBm 13asu. So for me the Radio change was extremely beneficial!

It depends on what firmware you are on...... custom rom support different radio RILS (not much of a difference though)... the thing to flash a RADIO find the proper RIL... that to if you are using Sense rom.... other roms like CM or MIUI do not require RIL....

Thanks for the feedback, tried it with the radio reccomended for the leedroid rom and it worked no problem, so far seems like it might draw a little more battery though and the wifi connectivity might not be as good either, but I"m going to try it for a few days.
Is there any likely downside to flashing the newest radio out (along with the RIL for it) which I think is the one reccomended br ARHD.. Is there kernel settings or anythign like that specific to the radio/RIL as part of the rom?

Don't know what Telus means (I understand it's a provider, wait before fighting...)
In China there is 2 type of DHD. CDMA and WCDMA.
If Radio HW is different, I will not be surprized that you need to flash a different radio. They can have the same piece of software for the 2 HW, but I don't know. I didn'tfind the answer to this question yet.
Of course one will work on the other network, but you can't have 3G (only GPRS/Edge). European DHD works on CDMA network... but no 3G.
Anyway, if it doesn't work, you can always flash back

Any ROM need a RIL. It's the abstraction layer between Android (the OS) and the radio (HW specific to phone). think of it as a driver on your computer.
Radio=firmware of your "device"
RIL=Driver of this "device"

i have no clue. if you try it, please tell us.
any bell users update?
This is the same radio that came on my Sprint Touch. It is a pretty good radio but there are some places where I still can't get reception. Basic reception issues that you will get with most any radio.
Overall the coverage with this radio is excellent.
DCD I Love You!!!
Im A Bell User, And I Was Having Reception Issues In My House,
In My Own Bedroom Infact, After Installing This Radio, Those Issues Seem
To Have Gone Away, No More Static, And Voice Breaking Off!!
Thank You!!
O To Install Simply Unlock Your Phone With The Custom Bootloader,
Then Run The Radio Exe
And DCD
The Altel Touch Radio From What I Heard Is Newer Then 2.13
Is It Possible That You Can Get Your Hands On That?
would this work with telus touch as well ?? It only changes the radio and that's it?
thanks
yes it should work for the telus touch as well!
just a note installing this radio is like installing a rom, it will wipe your phone clean so do a backup.

Where did you find that vogue update file that you extracted the radio from? I would like a copy.
Quick Question for dcd
I was wondering if you would recomend the 2.13 radio over the 1.40 to use in conjunction with your 1.6.10 sprint rom? I know in the end its all up to me just wondering what you thought about it.
Thanks for all your work

Over @ PPCgeeks, I believe Latissimo has the complete ROM with that radio...... just check their FTP site...

Telus 2.15
For the person who asked about use of this on a Telus Touch: I got my Touch in November and the Radio ROM that came with it is newer than this (2.15) so you don't even need this one.
DCD, If I'm not mistaken, it's the same firmware you used in your custom ROM 0.20? (Which I love, btw... and am waiting eagerly for your next one)
DJ
I just installed this 2.13 radio Rom on my Bell HTC Touch and its working fine. It seems to have full bars for my EV Data connection all the time now, but it still only has 2 bars when it drops down to 1X for a voice call when I'm at the back of my house. THis is the same as before with the 1.59.10 Rom. I tested out the voice and is sounds a bit better so I think its improvement so far.
i just want to know which has faster data speeds as some say the 159.10a is very fast

Do I need a new radio

I know nothing about radios. Could someone please explain to me what it means and what it does for you? I have T-Mobile and only get 2 to 0 3G bars at work. It is really interfering with my music streaming. Would love to get more bars. I have a stock ROM and am not interested in flashing a new ROM.

Radio 3.5.25.14

"Radio" in reference to "new radio" or "flashing a radio" refers to a radio rom -- it's a software thing. And it affects (at least) your cell connection as well as your GPS connection...and probably how well the radio uses power and affects battery life. And I'm very happy with the new radio I'm using -- better than the stock radio.
But in order to flash a new radio (radio-rom) you need to first do the HardSPL thing, which is also required before flashing an OS rom.
So, if you say you don't want to flash a new OS rom (to avoid voiding your warranty, for example), then you probably won't want to do the HardSPL either, because that's as major (from a non-stock standpoint) as flashing a rom.
If you read just a few threads above this one you´ll find some interesting answers:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679322
I have done quite a bit of reading but it still is not clicking. I need a beginners article. I will find it, but have not yet.
So the Hard-SPL thing-a-ma-jiggy at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550131 - is that just for the radio or a ROM / radio. I do not mind flashing a radio, just do not want to flash a ROM because I don't have a need and do not want to spend the rest of my life on this new toy - i mean necessary piece of office equipment.
What radio would the Hard-SPL at that link give me? Is it true that software alone can increase the number of 3G bars?

I don't know the technical explanation...but the HardSPL is necessary in order to flash any rom -- that means a new radio (rom) or a new custom OS rom. (By "OS--rom" I mean all of those custom roms listed in all those threads in the TP2 Windows Mobile ROM Development sub-forum) The phone won't accept the non-stock rom (including radio-rom) without the HardSPL.
The HardSPL doesn't change anything else, though. You still have the same radio and the same stock rom. But it's necessary to do that before you flash a non-stock radio-rom or a non-stock OS rom.
Radio-roms (software) can improve your reception...but which one will/may do that depends on where you're located and other factors, so you would probably want to try more than one -- but once you've done it you'll see it's easy. It's also possible that 3G coverage in your area is simply poor.
If you need/want more details about alternative radio-roms you probably should post in the Rhodium GSM Radio Collection thread.

Perfect answer, amigo!
Brenda, I saw that you were thinking about doing the tmo 6.5 upgrade anyway, which of course includes the .57 radio, and that's the path I would suggest...it'll let you try out wm6.5 as well as that radio, and flashing an official upgrade like that is even easier than doing the HSPL-custom rom thing. So, that way you can see if either of those changes are good for you, with minimum effort and hassle. If the .57 radio doesn't seem to offer any improvement, then you can start getting into flashing others to try...and if you do then I suggest you start with the one MCBrian has in his sig, .77
Thanks sirphunkee for all you rhelp. I will take your advice. I was going to upgrade to 6.5 right away but decided to load a ton of software on my phone first to see what I liked. Well .... I like it all. Now I have so much software that I do not want to take a weekend to reload everything. But I will have to bite the bullet. I sit in a cube all day and like to listen to streaming music. I have napster but I like the unpredictability and pleasant surprises that a streaming station can offer. The low bars are interfering with my music.
I have kept good notes on all my applications installs and have all the software and "fixes". Have screen prints of all my "setups" for email. I use activesync with my desktop Outlook so all of that is saved. Don't think that there is anything else to save. Just wonder if you have any advice before I upgrade. Is there anything I should do before wiping clean my device? Should I clean my program files, outlook attachments, etc on my storage card?

problem with network after flashing

Hi to everyone
Sorry for my bad english.....but i have a problem with my desire hd.
I had installed rom "revolution hd" with radio 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_m2.......but now the phone doesn't take the gsm network like before flashing. When i do a call frequently bring the lines down and the signal rarely appear full.
What can i do to solve the problem?is this a problem of device(hardware) or in relation to a new rom (revolution hd)??
thanks to everyone
Mate,
It seems the ROM is not compatible with your carrier. The reason? Well, impossible to say, but probably the Radio that comes with the ROM, or even the adjustments of the ROM itself are making our phone unable to fully connect with your carriers net.
Try a different ROM.
Try to use the stock radio.
If it still doesnt work, check if your APN is set correctly.

The radio is the last version......so the solution is to try another rom....do you know a rom similar to "revolution hd"??
thanks

[Q] Which radio is the best?

Hi!
Tried to search and search alot about this but no luck, so I'll just go ahead and ask..
I have a HTC DHD, flashed with CM10.1 4.2.2 (I think the radio is 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M). Sometimes the cellular signal is just complete and utter bulls*it. Does that have something to do with the radio or is it just network related things?
Should I test some other radio, and if so, which one? I've read something about this and it looks like I shouldn't flash RIL at all, just the radio.
And finally, it would be nice if some made a general thread for radios, which would list let's say 3 to 5 newest radios for each device and compatible roms so noobs like me wouldn't have to ask this question again
Or you could use the search function to find other threads from noobs that have asked the same question
Sent from a dream.
Like I said, didn't find the info I wanted by searching the forums..
But here's some info for DHD users who are facing similar questions:
As told in the first post, I have CM 10.1 4.2.2 installed to my phone. The old radio was 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M. I updated the radio to version 12.69a.60.29U_26.17.14.11_M presented here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996630
Conclusion after first 24 hours:
+ Better battery life (+25% at the moment)
+ Better signal (both wlan and cellular)
+ Overall performance (No idea how the radio affects this, but the whole phone seems lag-free now)
- None so far
And as far as I can tell, you can update the radio to your phone, no matter where you're located (Operator specific phones may not work if tried). AND remember, if you have a CM installed, DON'T even try to install the RIL, just the radio.
I hope someone uses this information somewhere to provide forum users some answers

[Q] Radio chipset

Hello,
How can I localise the radio chipset on the bord ?
best regards
If you mean radio (gsm), it's located in Qualcomm SoC (processor, radio, etc... in one chipset).
Why do you need location?
What is problem?
Hello,
T thought that it was a separated chipset
I can't make a call
When I dial a number, it opens the screen calls it "call in progress" then 2 seconds after it cut "End Call".
However, the 3G connection works.
Best regards
Did you try to change settings?

Hello,
Yes I tried every things in sittings menu, I tried another reader SIM card, The same SIM card works correctly with another DHD, I tried a custom ROM, I tried another flex cable.
NO changes
Did you try to turn off wlan and try it again?
Or to turn off 3g?
If you use custom rom you don't now nothing because they can have a problems for some devices.
The best rom for testing is the latest stock shiped wwe ROM installed from ruu (not from hboot).
You can download it from here:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Ace
Hello,
I do flashing the RUU_Ace_Sense30_S_HTC_WWE_3.12.405.1_Radio_12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M_release_225512_signed.exe,
before doing a custom rom install.
I do several tests without 3G nor wifi.
I tested the *#*#4636#*#* : phone information to fix GSM only.
I am in test with a stock rooted rom (DHD_WWE_3.12.405.1_STOCK_rooted_by_nitr00.zip), I have all time the same result : no calls in or out possible
Thanx
Did you try this?

Unsupported bands? Mine worked in all of the places I've been in Europe.
Just to make sure try a different SIM ( with different network - preferably 2G sim as most 3G cause haywire. )
If not then flash a radio FOR WWE as it may be outdated.

I don't understand why people don't read the whole thread. It's just 8 short posts.
This turns out that you write something just because you have to.
But you aren't the only one. And that's sad.

Well, to be honest tapatalk sends me to the first unread post; therefore I couldn't read the post that you flashed a WWE RUU.
However, I'd think you should flash a radio specific to your region as their could be difference to the WWE. But I don't know if this would work as they're device dependent? But it's worth a shot.
Though, accordingly to your posts you've tried many software troubleshooting and checking the flex cable. I wouldn't know anything else...
