Getting GREAT battery life with new ROM (Lost just 20% in 16 hours) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361108
Lost just 20% in 16 hours. This is of course with JuiceDefender and airplane mode scheduled to run over night. But it's still impressive as we used to get battery drains even at times phone was supopsed to sleep and AirPlane mode on.
My baseband is UGKK7, but that's not what cured it, I had this baseband installed days earlier and battery drain was awful.
In my case it appears all battery problems are cured:

What's your standby current draw? In my HD2 android, I had about 4-9ma. But in Galaxy Nexus it's about 19-40ma which is pretty high. Judging from your screenshot, yours is 16ma in standby?

Possibly, I have no idea. Nexus is known from high default cpu voltage, maybe thats that or maybe it's my apps waking phone every now and then to check things, for example LED light notification app or Juice Defender.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy now, might tweak it some more when I have time, but it's now at the same level as my old SGS2, I'd say a bit better (I think I had 5% night drop on AirPlane mode on SGS2, but again it depends on apps).

Just checked: it was constant -5mA throughout the night.

Have you, knowing you want to see good results, un-knowingly played less with your phone on this rom?

That's not it, I know battery will go down when I actively use it. What I noticed is that I get great results when phone is idle. This didn't happen before, you would see battery drain even when idle at night in AirPlane mode. This means light use should also give better battery performance than before, I will be testing that.

This is with Google+ and Facebook signed in. I just disabled all notifications from these apps and they appear to function properly, do not keep awake when not run.

I dont know what I did but while IDLe, I get about 1% drain per hour, thats on 3G, sync on (gmail, google+, etc), no juicedefender or airplane mode.
I only tested it overnight, when Im sleeping, notice the ZERO wake locks and crappy signal; unbelievable!
Disclaimer: this was while I was sleeping, NO usage. Battery obviously goes down much quicker once the screen is on, but for idle time, I am content!

It is not useless info. Previously, when putting in AirPlane mode and not using the phone at all we would see big battery drain. Now we don't. This is to proove that now the phone actually goes to sleep whenever I don't use it. This is proper testing before and after applying one change.

I will know next time I go to work. But since I never use it for all these 8-10 hours straight, I should have better battery, because whenever I will put the phone away, even for another 15mins, battery will stop dropping like it used to.
In other words, it will most likely still drop as usual while actively using the phone, but in overall I should get more battery because of much more efficient idle times.

Greatly improved battery life (CDMA)

Last night I restored my phone using the factory image. For some reason I anticipate an OTA soon so I wanted to be ready. Anyhow, before I suffered from the battery drain bug. I forgot to charge my phone last night, and didn't realize it until I got in my car and put it on the car charger and it said 89%. My first thought was that my battery drained over 10% in the hour I was getting ready and not using it! Then I went into battery settings and found out I never charged it.. then I found some pleasant... well, I'll just show you.

As you can see, I lost less than 5% battery during the 6+ hours my phone was unplugged. I had the phone in the living room charging while watching a movie. Then I unplugged and used it for about 20 minutes in the bedroom which accounts for the first rapid drop in battery. But after I set it down, the phone went into a coma. And I can't see exactly, but it looks like it was only 2 or 3% which is great!
Not sure what changed, I still have the same apps installed, even Facebook. I did, however, NOT disable VZ backup assistant like I normally do. Maybe that is what causes the OS to go bonkers? Thoughts?

I got about 20 hours out of mine yesterday (extended battery) with moderate usage (texting, ebay, facebook, web) This is after unlocking the bootloader and rooting. Unlocking the bootloader resets the phone to factory state. I've read a few other posts around the web where battery life is greatly improved after a factory reset. Android OS is still the main things devouring my battery, but I almost don't care with the performance I'm getting. I should also mention that I wiped battery stats from CWM and then calibrated the battery on first charge.
I'm no dev, so I don't know why a reset would help. Then again, maybe it was wiping battery stats and calibrating that helped me. Just my $.02
How did you calibrate the battery?
There's a free tool in the market that will calibrate for you. Have to be rooted though. Just search for calibrate.

Surprised this isn't getting more acknowledgement. Any one else experience the same after a reset?

Guess maybe I'm one of the lucky few...I've always had this type of battery life. The phone just sips power while the screen is off.
While it is on...well that's different. I keep the brightness high and get about 2-2.5 hours of screen time before it powers off.
The interesting thing here is that it seems that you have the Android OS constantly waking up the phone but yet it still barely uses battery.
Do you have location services turned on or off?
Turned on. I noticed that too but the overall awake time is low. Usually it would be over half of the entire time on battery, sometimes 100%.

I used 50% in about 3 hours on my extended battery.
fml.
Great battery life, but you didnt really use your phone much.
Your "Screen on" is only about 15% of those 6 hours. Which ends up being about an hour.
Still, none the less, great battery life/power consumption.

I unplugged my phone at 11:30 pm with 98%, woke up at 7:30 am today and it dropped to 76%. So a 20% drop in 8 hrs with the phone just sitting there with wi-fi on and no apps running. It'd be very interesting to see if a factory restore would help.
How's the battery life now that you're using it?
Im thinking of unlocking and rooting mine tonight. havent had a moment to read the walkthrough just yet.
i noticed this too last night/today. i went to sleep after installing bugless beast 4.0.3 cdma, left it off the charger, and today i saw the chart was pretty much a flat line. i don't recall the exact times, but i'll try to time it out. about 8 hours
i wonder if all the initial extreme battery drain reports are due to the 'wowanewphone' effect, where you are molesting your phone 24/7, as opposed to the typical day-to-day use you'll eventually fall back into

[Q] Insane battery life, is this normal?

Is this normal, an hour of web-browsing with screen on auto-brightness and phone drops from 100% to 71% ? Wifi was off, bluetooth on but not connected to anything. I have Better Battery Stats too, shall I post up? On stock ICS.

He said the wifi was off, please read people.
not sure if "insane" means bad or good. But it looks about average. The average screen on time ranges from 3.5 to 4.5 hours. Mine is dead center of that.
Bluetooth not connecting to anything still drains a lot because it is constantly scanning for other bluetooth devices.
BTW your reception is in the YEllow. that means that also leads to battery drain.
So if you have better reception and your bluetooth is off then your battery would last longer.
Note: I use bluetooth a lot and I find it to be one of the biggest factors for draining. more than GPS and Wifi. Although, using wifi with strong signal actually saves battery.

I really doubt that, because I did the same battery test Techradar* does, which is:
screen on full bright
Wifi on
Gmai, FB, etc all set to update as often as possible
Run a 1.5 hour long HD video full screen
At the end of that test I was at 84%. (the Video was on my SD card, not streaming)
In the video they have a graph of their stats for different phones using this test. GS2 and GS3 are top 2.

You're doubting that our phone doesn't last that... Uhh.. Short? I've had this phone since December and had many discussions with others on here about it and we agree that 4 hrs is about right.
So with that test you're saying that our phone can get over 6 hours throughout the say with normal use? Highly doubt it. You have to realize a couple things.
1. Wifi consumes less battery than 4g
2. You should factor in a normal days use that means including idle time i would say about 2% per hour maybe less.
3. Watching a movie means no "touch" interactions which means it consumes less battery than Web browsing or playing games.
So yes if you just leave the phone on the entire time without touching it. It'll last a long time. But with actually interacting with the phone and using 4g data. Most gets 4hr. Screen time in 17 hours of use ( you guys do get 7 hours of sleep right?)
I don't really believe that test. I know that the 4s battery sucks balls. Our phone lasts longer with our 4g on. It is saying that the one x is shorter?? One x and s lasts longer than our phone. So yeah.

I charged it up during the day yesterday, but then hammered it syncing my emails, sms messages and other things.
So, last night was my first real charge. I took it off the charger at 6am this morning, and right now, at just a few minutes less than 5 hours, I'm at 83% with 70% use being cell standby.
I'm sticking with HSPA+ today, because I know that will drain the battery more than WiFi (at least that was the case on my Atrix) and I'm trying to get a feel for the battery life when away from WiFi.
Now, full disclosure, my phone has 6 email accounts setup for push. An Exchange account, two Gmail accounts and three Imap idle accounts using k9 mail. Still, I would say it's burning battery at a little higher rate than my Atrix with those same six push email accounts.
5 hours and down to 40%.
:-(
I'm seeing a significant increase in battery life whith the s3 over the s2

I'm a bit of a light user, but a little heavier than average given new phone.
7.5 hrs @ 57%.
I'll post screens when I can.
5 Hours, 45%, screen on 2 hr, 12 min.
Interesting thing: I have a Pandora Widget on my screen, have not used it at all, and 13% of my power, and show son for 22 min.
9.5 hrs @ 29%.
I am using the default juicedefender profile.
Cell standby hogs the battery more than other phones like US One X with same SoC. I think kernel devs can work on this since this is not normal.
To get a good idea on battery life, everyone needs to show their screen on time as it should be the biggest drain.

^^ I had power saving off for the first 3 hours of the day, and screen was set to 1/4 brightness. I changed screen to auto brightness, disabled wifi network scanning/notification, turned on power saving mode (all options), and it's been like that since about 3 hours into the day. I've done some driving with Slacker Radio streaming via bluetooth to my Jeep.
Seems like cellular standby eats juice. I am in an LTE area.

My battery is a little bit better. I don't have any screen shots right now, but it's usually around 3 - 3.5 hours on screen. Around 7-8 hours battery usage total.

Try downloading Gsam or watchdog from the playstore. Watchdog will tell you if there's a rogue app draining your battery and Gsam will tell you what's taking up the most power.

With 2 hours screen on time over an 8 hour period and your steady curve on that graph, I would say you have some app, or some service eating CPU cycles constantly (these are called wake locks)...
Do this:
Download an app called CPU spy
Charge your device all the way
Pull it off charger
Open CPU spy
Then just hit the back button to close it.
Let your device sit for about a half hour. Don't touch it as much as possible. Leave the screen off.
Open CPU spy... post a picture of what your CPU stats say according to that app. Majority of your times should be in deep sleep mode.
Also, your battery shouldn't drain anymore than 1 to 1.5% each hour at idle. Unless you live in an area where there is poor reception (scanning for signal chews it up as well).
EDIT** ALSO...is your screen brightness on auto or is it manually adjusted a little brighter? If it on auto, then your battery life according to those graphs is absolutely awful. I have mine set pretty bright and I still see about 3 hours of screen on time

Give it a few hours of "normal" use and then come back here with a Betterbatterystats screen shot with Partial Wakelocks/Since Unplugged and Processes/Since Unplugged. That way we can see what is eating your battery. With only 4% gone, we can't see anything (too small of a window). Make sure you don't plug it in and use normally.
I have seen your other posts and I am wondering what it is that you really want out of your battery. If you think that you can get 3-4 days out of a charge, that is not going to happen. 1.5-2 days is a reasonable expectation and I think that you can get that, but you have to look at your usage habits. No kernel is going to fix that. No ROM is either.
If you are polling notifications (Facebook, G+. Twitter) or Google Locations (Maps, some app that requires location) or believe it or not using the XDA/Tapatalk app a bunch, then those will drain your battery quite fast. I use the Tapatalk app quite a bit and that and Google Now are my #1/2 battery drainers. Could I get rid of Google Now? Sure. It is more of a novelty at this point. I still get 1 -2 days of charge on my phone wihtout worrying about where a plug is.
Like I said, come back at the end of the day or tomorrow morning and post the Partial Wakelocks/Since Unplugged and Processes/Since Unplugged and we'll see what is draining your battery.
Another thing to note is that it seems your mobile network is typically pretty patchy. This can really drain your battery too.
I've been chasing wakelocks since I got my device and think I'm at a pretty good place. I get 2.5-3hrs of screen on time (about 20% screen brightness) across about 25hrs of standby time. Does anyone else get a lot of mmc1_detect and mmc0_detect wakelocks?
thanks woodrube. I will post my stats at the end of the day. I don't have a facebook or google + or any app that have notifications or updates by itself. I have the screen set to 20% brightness

[Q] Slowly Decreasing Battery Life

I updated to 4.1.2 about 3 weeks ago or so. Not sure exactly. And the battery seemed to be just fine then. But slowly over these weeks, especially the last 4 days or so, it seems to be decreasing. I used to be able to go a whole day easy. And still have 45-50% left. And that would continue into the next day. Sometimes I would get 2 whole days and sitll have about 15% and then decide to charge it back.
Now, I can barely get a full day. And when I don't charge the phone at night, the battery charge decreases quite rapidly. Sometimes 15% or so with no usage at all overnight. It used to maybe move 3% at the most overnight with no usage.
My settings are the same. My usage is the same. I see time without signal is 2%. Nothing extremely high there.
Is this just one of the downside of 4.1.2 or is there something else happening that I'm not picking up on?
I didn't want this to really turn into what apps are out there to make the life better because I hate jumping through all those hoops and settings to get the most. I know this phone has the potential for 2 days of moderate use out the box because that is what I used to get. Seeing if I could get back to that state.
I was told to go into Wifi settings and change the setting not stay on while the phone is sleeping. Did not help at all. Per this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mInF-ZRX5bs
Did that last night. Charged it 97% and went to sleep. Slept for 5 and a half hours. Did not touch the phone at all. Woke up and it's at 82% this morning. Here's the screenshot of the battery stats:

Glad it's not just me then. Have you found anyway to make it a little better?
Well if you don't need to wanted at night, then what I do is put it in airplane mode and take off when waking up.
If you still get wake locks, check to see which ones they are off a wake lock app.
Also before I put into stand by, I exit all apps, also restart phone with airplane mode on. Doing this I haven't lost any battery life at all and seems to help throughout the day as well
Currently 60% right now and over 3 hours on-screen time and 16 hours.
Doing much better if I don't do what I have been doing.
Also make sure all GPS location settings are off. Huge battery drain for me.

Yeah I know airplane mode will work but I receive texts late at night sometimes and those would not come through. Before this update, I never had a problem. I never had to make sure apps were closed and all this other stuff. It just never drained on me at all. When I first had the phone, I used to have to try very hard to drain the battery to zero so I could let the phone die and then get a full charge. The battery life used to be very great. Now, not so much.
And I have no idea why Slacker is being used like that. I haven't used that app in 3 weeks. And I don't see any settings that would cause it to being used in the background when I'm clearly not using it.
Yes I never have GPS on until I need it for navigation purposes. I'm hoping Key Lime Pie fixes this or we get another minor update before that.

You should never discharge your phone to anywhere close to dead. It ruins your battery

Do you have lte on? Are you in an lte area? Have you tried a factory reset?
My battery life was horrible when j first upgraded. Seeing as i am not with T-Mobile i do not get lte. I turned my lte off and my battery went back to normal.
A factory reset may also clear any gremlins that you may have left over frlm the update

Same here owned it since december...great battery and after update it went down the drain (especially losing 15-20% overnight with just about everything turned off. I would usually let it get down to 10-15% and then charge. Well eventually my phone would only charge "when it wanted too" so I got a replacement, updated to 4.1.2 and battery lifes has been great.
As far as not doing full cycles or not...ive looked and looked and everyone says diff. Some experts argue it's good to let ot drain till about 5% and then charge And other experts say charge often and not let it below x percentage. Soooo confused on the topic, so in the end to each their own I guess lol
