[Q] Skype as default dialer - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have an evo with DeckRom on it (gingerbread). I'm trying to get skype to be my default dialer, or even better to have it prompt me for what I'd like to use as a dialer (phone or skype).
I can't for the life of me figure this out. Phone doesn't show up under settings-applications-manage-all. I've cleared defaults from gocontacts.
I've tried uninstalling skype, then rebooting the phone and redownloading the app.
Still nothing.
Other thing I might like is the ability to choose google voice to make outgoing calls if that is available.
Thanks in advance.

Bump for this. I'm having the exact same issue on my thunderbolt running stock/rooted debloat. Any help would be great as I'm retiring the thunderbolt and basically turning it intoca glorified pda/voip phone.

Google voice can be set as a default dialer/SMS/voicemail app but Skype I don't believe will set as a default however on decks gb rom in settings under calls you can set up a SIP account for voip calling with no added apps it will use the default dialer to call over ip

When I first installed skype, android gave me the option to choose how to complete the call. I no longer receive that option.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk

My goal is to either:
1. have the option of using skype, google voice or T mobile when initiating a call from my contacts list
or
2. be able to access and successfully choose a contact from my list when I'm on skype
At some point (I don't know why) my phone stopped giving the choice of using Skype, google voice or TMobile for an outgoing call. I would love to get that back since Skype doesn't allow me to use my phone contact list to make calls. Any ideas on how to achieve my goal?
Please tell me how to have a notification on my email when someone responds to my question.
Thanks

You're in the evo4g forum no one here has tmo as the evo is a cdma phone not gsm

Same problem here since upgrading to latest Android. Did you find a solution yet?

1.instal new update 1.2t with new apps
2.set up gogle voice for voice mail
I update and flashed decks 1.2t i updated my ratios to the latest started using goggle voice as a voice mail default sign out google voice and then i start having issues not getting text messages and i am able to send them but i cant receive them also noticed an annoying call setting when recieving calls it asks to press 1 to recieve call or 2 to voicemail i tried wiping everything several times and reflashing already 5 times even went back to 1.0 i even try used vr superwipe and try other roms still issue idk what can i do i would highly appreciate your input
Which phone and version are you using?
htc evo 0003
1.2t
latest ratios
I noticed that i could log into goggle voice and get my text messages but i would rather not used it anymore and i cant figure out that answering system thanks guys i would highly apreciate your help
I had the same issue. Went you integrate Google Voice it will automatically intercept your sms, along with calls. If you use a computer and go to Google and sign into Voice you will be able to modify your settings there. That or download the Google Voice app, sign in and sign out. That allowed me to use the native sms app
I tried signing in and out of the app but still doesn't do it anytime someone calls me I slide screen to answer then voice setting ask to press the #1key to answer or#2 to voicemailthis setting is really annoying I can't get rid of it

Google voice preventing me from making Bluetooth calls...

So I just bought a new car, and while hooking my dinc up via Bluetooth I noticed that I cant call out from my phone because I have it set to ask every time I make a call if I want to use Google voice...it gets stuck on that screen and fails to make the call.
Is there a way to prevent the Google voice app from asking when calling out via Bluetooth?
Anyone? I could have sworn it worked Thursday when I picked the car up, that's the weird thing...
I'm not sure exactly where it is but there is an option in the settings somewhere that dictates how Google voice handles calls. It can be set to use Google voice, not use it, or ask.

I think that's for international calls. But, you phone might be dialing an international prefix before the number. That normally wouldn't matter, but Gvoice will take notice of it. I set mine to never ask because I never call internationally.
Ah yeah, I think loonatik is right. So if you do have 1+ before the number, GV will probably pick that up and that might be what's giving you troubles. Maybe?
No, I have it set to always ask...but I was hoping there was some way to override it if the call is made via Bluetooth. I could have sworn I had it working Thursday, but now it just fails because it gets stuck on the Google voice screen ...
Anyone know of any way to override the setting if making a call thru Bluetooth?
Or, an alternative would be for me to turn it off (or on) for all calls and have an easy way to bypass it...
Possible solutions...
Free, but a pain in the butt:
Drop the Google Voice Settings widget on one of your home screens. The third button (the one that looks like a handset inside of a settings button) toggles call modes for GV:
-Use for all calls
-Do not use
-Use for international
-Ask every time
Free, but I have never tried the app so I can't personally comment:
http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/communication/google-voice-callback-free_fpin.html
Looks like you could set this up to perhaps side-step the GV behavior of manually answering every time
I was about to write out how to do it with Tasker and the Locale Google Voice Settings plug-in. But I just realized that it doesn't have the all/none/ask choice as a plug-in setting: only the online stuff like forwarding phones, etc. Bummer - but maybe you could contact the dev about future integration
Google Voice always ask and bluetooth
Did you ever find a good work-around or solution for this?
I just got an S4 today, and I was hoping that the Google Voice app on the Android would be similar to the iPhone one. It's not.
I use google voice to call/text my friends (I ported my original # over to Google) and the main number for work. But when I tried making a call over bluetooth in the car, got the same problem as you, it got stuck on the "Always Ask" prompt. The problem with making it never ask, is there is no dialer to just go to like there is on an iPhone when you do want to make a call using Google Voice. So you have to keep switching the option on that widget before every call. So annoying.
Suggestions?

Problems with google voice on CM7 Droid Incredible

My gf's phone has been having some issues with google voice for awhile now. She's always wanted the stock incredible VVM back, but no one's ever been able to find it on other forums. If anyone has the stock VVM for the phone, I think she would like that better.
If not...
Her issue is that whenever someone calls her phone it always has different responses. Some people call and say the number is unavailable, others say it asks for her subscriber number. I've called three times now and i've had those two errors along with one that actually got through. The problem is that she isn't receiving all her calls, which anyone on this forum can attest that this is a MAJOR issue, especially while she hunts for jobs. If ANYONE can figure out a solution to this problem it would be awesome. I've searched the web for weeks trying to find a solution or even an alternate VVM, but I haven't had any luck.
I just need to figure out one of the following:
- how to get back stock Incredible VVM
- how to fix or permanently get rid of google voice
- find an alternative VVM that works decently and can get past this google voice issue.
Any help would be appreciated...
Phone is Verizon Droid Incredible running CM7 version 7.0.3-inc
What are her Google Voice settings set to? Open GV and navigate to: Menu/More/Making Calls? This setting should be set to "Do not use GV to make calls." I've been using it for about a year and across different roms with absolutely no problem, so this is a surprise to me.
To remove Google Voice (no don't do it, stop...aight I'm done):
If you want to remove GV, sign into her Google account from a computer, along the black Google title bar click on "More" then select GV from the list of Google services. Now, click the gear icon below your account name and there is a "deactivate Google Voicemail on this phone" link in blue. Once you deactivate Google Voice, your Verizon voicemail should be working. I haven't personally done this, cuz I actively use GV. I believe your Verizon voicemail is *86 if you want to access it over the phone. If you want, call Verizon to ensure the second phone (the GV account) number is disconnected from the account as well. Last step requires you to call and test her voicemail to make sure they come through.
P.s. Doesn't every rom include Voicemail Settings under Settings/Call? Does changing your settings there fail as well?

thanks that got rid of it. i also found how to set it back to the carrier voicemail like you said. i like google voice, but that problem not being able to receive calls 50% of the time just kills the functionality of a phone almost. i wish i knew the deeper problem of it so i could make it fully functional. thanks though, this fix will work for now.
Not a problem, sucks that you had that issue arise. Glad I could help.

[Q] Setting up Google Voice without a carrier number

Hey guys. I had a sprint number that has since been disconnected. I am using MIUI now and I can send texts just fine using the Google Voice app over wifi. When I try to update to a new version of MIUI I can't go through the steps to verify my number because it no longer exists.
Anyone have a work around for this? I have tried restoring the app with titanium backup but it wants me to set it up again each time.
Stumped at to what to do. I set it up before without the phone number, but now I can't seem to figure it out.

+1, trying to setup Google Voice with a Line2 number, no success yet.
Won't be any either, they only support major carriers.
Just go to the online Google Voice settings and add a phone number in it. You don't have to keep the number on the account; it just needs to be there long enough to get through setup in the Google Voice app.
I have a deactivated device that I can make VOIP calls with using my Google Voice number with the native dialer, and text through the native SMS app.

Not sure I understand - of course it works on WiFi . The device is deactivated - how else would you be able to connect, and/or use the phone?

You can dial out with your stock dialer with Google Voice over just WiFi, without any service?
When I try that, it says Dialing with Google Voice, and then "Mobile Network not available" immediately afterwards and no call. What am I doing wrong? Also there seems to be no way to dial out from my Line2 VOIP line as if the number was my GV number. GV is confusing

Do you have it set up? You have to set up PBXes and it essentially uses Google Talk to connect to the internet dialer so you can make phone calls.
Just Google for the guide on setting up Google Voice with Android PBXes and native dialer.
Try Groove Ip. My Sprint Number has been disconnected & I been using this to make calls & texts over WiFi. I set it up fine after switching Roms but my voice number was already setup on the sprint # that has been turned off. Try going to your voice options on your browser & see if you can change anything there.

Does this use the Internet Calling features of the native dialer, or is the app required to make and receive calls? I prefer using the native dialer as it works correctly with bluetooth.

Thank you, this worked well, I'm still playing with it but, I think I'll be able to replace Line2. :good:
Update: After using it for a few days, I tried out Sparephone ($3 in the play store) and loved it way more. Now I'm working on a plan to switch to Ting and ditch Line2 (replacing with Sparephone and GV), and I'll be saving like, literally $140 a month (!!)....it sounds crazy but I'm pretty sure it'll work. I love GV!
Update: Yeah it totally works, no more Line2.
If you are on GB you can use Google voice version 3.2 and it will use your gtalk instead of having to use the phones number to verify. Also you can use groove IP or talkatone to make calls with Google voice. I have been using this way for 2+ years now with a Wifi Hotspot that I carry in my pocket. I am pretty much through with Mobile carriers now. If on ICS or JB then you would have needed to have confirmed a number at some point in the past in order to verify it with the newer version of Google voice. Unfortunately version 3.2 or older does not work with ICS or JB.

[SOLVED] enabling calling / dialer on A100

I can use my A100 perfectly fine with Sipdroid and my google voice account, however the problem is more or less a convenience issue. Sipdroid doesn't have a good way to view your contacts like in an address book, and it also doesn't dial from the "People" app when you try to place a call using sipdroid. I have had other android devices that the contacts(now People) will allow you to call a person from the internal dialer or a 3rd party one and it automatically forwards the call to sipdroid accordingly. I installed the Dialer One app hoping that it would solve the issue on my A100, and that is when I found out that it didn't work at all with it. I get a message saying "Telephony feature is unavailable on this device" I have had other tablets without telephony capabilities that this app has worked with. I am wondering if there is a simple mod I can do to trick the app into thinking it does have telephony capabilities, or if there is some way I could recompile cm9 to include any missing libraries, system files, apks, etc.. such as the internal dialer. If anyone has got Dialer One to work for them with SipDroid +GV or if you know of an app that works like the default dialer app (that we don't have) then please let me know. I appreciate the help. If I can get this figured out I'll make an attempt at providing a custom ROM with the dialer and telephony features enabled just for people who wish to use Google Voice calling with their tablet. If it is as simple as a build.prop edit then I will add that to my custom build.prop in my thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1799148
**Edit: I think I found a solution to get SipDroid to place calls when calling from "People(contacts)" I was looking into the process that takes place when a call is initiated and I seen that we have a Phone.apk in our a100 roms, but the process is nullified so nothing ever takes place when something triggers it.
I had the idea, well what devices that are tegra2 based have ICS and allow phone/voice calling? Motorola Atrix 4g does.. So let me find the Motorola Atrix 4G Phone.apk and replace the one I have in /system/app/ with it. Lo and Behold I can now make calls directly from my contacts!! This fixed it, partially.. What still doesn't work? Dialer One still gives the same error - "Telephony feature is unavailable on this device", but now I don't really need Dialer One anyway since I can just use the builtin contacts through the People app. Another thing thats not really desired, once you make a call you will get a blank window for the Phone app at the bottom of your "history" list (button beside the home on the launcher) I will try to figure out a way to get rid of this annoyance and prevent history from ever showing the Phone app.
If you want to try it your self, here is what to do (you must be root):
If you have Android ICS 4.0.3 or newer Download the Motorola Atrix 4G Phone.apk here. **If you are using HC then you will need the Phone.apk from a Tegra2 device that runs HoneyComb 3.x**
Mount /system writeable
Move the file /system/app/Phone.apk to /system/app/Phone.apk.bak
Put the downloaded Phone.apk in /system/app
Touch the phone number for a contact in your "People" app
Choose to call with SipDroid (or other app in list that accepts the dial function)
Watch the call take place (you may want to try dialing someone you know you isn't going to answer the phone or wonder what you are doing haha)
**Please note that this does not enable the "Call/Dial" app to show up in your applications, it simply allows calls to be passed to a Sip dialer such as SipDroid**
I just got an A100 the other day and installed Talkatone. I thought that it integrated with People like it does on my android phone. After reading your post, I tried it out. Talkatone has the "phone intercept" options but nothing happens when you click on a number in People. However, if you have the "intercept sms" option in Talkatone enabled, clicking on a number in People will start Talkatone for sms. Looks like it is dependent on the phone.apk.
However, for Talkatone, you don't really need the People app. Talkatone displays your "people" in the Contacts tab so it is easy to dial out directly from the app. Overall Talkatone works pretty good with Google Voice on the A100, both sending and receiving calls.

Thanks for the tips, i will check out talkatone, but for now the "People" app works great the way it is suppose to. its always nice to try something different though too! +1
**Edit: I installed talkatone, it works wonderfully well with the Atrix Phone.apk, when you are in the People app, when you click a number to dial, it will prompt you for what you want to use to complete the action, first pick Call(Phone), don't pick Talkatone or SipDroid, then it will prompt you again to complete the action using either Call (Phone) or Talkatone- it should immediately bring up the Talkatone dialer and begin the call. To eliminate these steps, just set the check box to always use the methods on both prompts. First prompt just choose Call/Phone.apk - Second Prompt choose Talkatone. Now when you click a number in People in will automatically call in Talkatone ** Thanks notjustafone for the recommendation of Talkatone!!
