I just received a Kindle Fire and decided to root and install Cyanogenmod. I found a tutorial which I thought looked pretty straightforward on Lilputing. I downloaded the Kindle Fire Utility and followed both the utility and the article told me to do. After installing TWRP 2.0, disaster. I rebooted the device and the Kindle read, "press power button for recovery," and showed a yellow triangle with a fire icon in the middle. I pressed the power button, and nothing happened. At this point, I rebooted. The device would not get passed this screen, and my PC would not recognize the Kindle. I presume I bricked my device, however (as I do not have any experience in this field) I honestly have no idea what I did, nor do I know where to go next. Any suggestions? Please help!
I'm stuck too. And i cannot install the driver because it is an unknown device.

Try this:
1) Download v6 of the Kindle Fire Utility from here. (The forum thread can be found here)
2) Extract the files into a folder anywhere (but remember where, obviously)
3) Go into the folder, then into 'drivers' and open up adb_usb.ini in a text editor and add "0x18D1" (without the quotes) on a line underneath "0x1949"
4) Open up Device Manager and find "kindle". It should have a yellow triangle near it.
5) Download fastboot.exe from here
6) Open up command prompt and navigate to wherever you saved fastboot to.
7) Run the command "fastboot oem idme bootmode 4000"
8) Power off your device by holding down the power button for ~10 seconds and turn it back on, and this time don't hit the power button to go into TWRP. It should move past the yellow triangle after a few seconds and boot into Kindle. Hope this helps!

I did, however, find a solution using the Kindle Fire Utility.
With my device connected to my computer, I selected Change BootMode. Next, I chose Normal. That brought me out of the frozen boot screen, so I decided to wing it and flashed Cyanogenmod, and that worked. Thank you anyway for your time.

For me 7 resulted in a device not found, though I fixed this by rebooting the kindle (I guess fastboot mode ends at some point?)
So after I fix this - how do I get into TWRP? Trying to install it from the utility does not work!!

Unfortunately, I don't know. I've been trying to get in TWRP all night and have been unsuccessful. I knew how to get out of this issue because I've put myself here several times tonight, trying to get TWRP to start up...so far, no luck...
I had same problem. Kept booting to "press power button for recovery" but never went to recovery. I had to download and install FireFireFire manually after i installed twrp. Now works great. Just power off then hold power button in for few seconds (until it turns orange) when powering back on, release, then there's twrp.

THANK YOU! This fixed the problem, I just had to find the thread that was ONLY FireFireFire, and not combined with TWRP, since that hadn't worked for me. I included instruction below for anyone having similar issues:
I downloaded the u-boot.win from here then ran

fastboot flash bootloader u-boot.bin
at which point it sait "Waiting for device". So I rebooted the Kindle like had the last several times that's appeared and it flashed it and then I rebooted again and I held down the power button, and it turned amber, like it had earlier, except THIS time it actually booted into TWRP!! Hooray! Hope this helps anyone else having this issue.

I tried this and it won't work, what am I doing wrong ?
Why is there a step 4? Is it only there so I check if kindle shows up or do I have to update its driver so there is no yellow triangle anymore?

So I managed to get it running. What I did is I added the "0x18D1" as in step 3 but after that I opened my device manager and by clicking on kindle (that has yellow triangle next to it) I updated its driver. I chose the location of adb_usb.ini that I edited. After that I ran Kindle Fire Utility and chose option 1 (Boot mode) and in the following menu I tried all of the options. In the option 3 (Recovery) it did something and now every time I boot kindle it goes to the yellow triangle but by pressing power button once it starts normal boot.
Ok, but still I would like to get it completely back to normal if possible so if anyone can help, thanks
It is supposed to show the recovery triangle EVERY time you reboot.
Just don't touch anything and it will continue to boot on its own to the OS.
The only time you should do something different is if you want to boot into recovery, then you push the power button until it turns orange and let go, it will boot into the TWRP recovery.
You really shouldn't need reboot the machine often. I do it maybe once every couple days at most.

To remove TWRP and go back to the stock Amazon ROM, all you have to do is flash the stock Amazon firmware. Use Kindle Fire Utility v.7 to download the stock update.zip, copy the file to the SD card, boot into recovery, and install it.

I had this same problem a few days ago. I fixed it by going into Device Manager, finding the device called "kindle" (it had a yellow triangle next to it) and manually installing the ADB drivers. You can't search for drivers automatically, you have to manually specify the "ADB Composite Interface" or something to that effect.
I have also had this issue, thought it was because I was using a 64 bit windows 7 system.
I had previously installed cyanogenmod 7 using destructions from this forum, and I have also done something similar with my Galaxy S2 (I mention this, because this may be why the drivers havent worked?)
Anyway, I added the line above, then rebooted my PC (twice), and then unplugged my kindle fire and rebooted. I then plugged it in to the PC and it came up as "kindle" in device manager, but had the exclamation mark warning. I clicked update driver and found the updated usb.ini file. Windows did its stuff and then it appears as Android bridge device.
The kindle wa still stuck at the yellow triangle, but selection the fastboot menu option 1, then boot normal and it worked a charm.
Persevere and dont give up!

The page wont load to download that version of KFU. Also everytime I try to download fastboot I get an error saying AdbWinApi.dll is missing from my computer. Where do I find that?

I am having this problem and have gone back to install FireFireFire manually but I still get stuck at "press power button for recovery". If I leave it alone it eventually boots as normal. If I press and hold the power button for a few seconds, it turns orange but never does anything. Any ideas?
I should mention that I'm running Ubuntu Linux - no access to Windows so KFU is not an option. My Fire is at version 6.3 and I've been roughly following the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568340

Hi all,
This is my first post. I live in the UK and bought my kindle fire brand new from ebay. The software version is 6.3.1.
I decided I wanted to root it quite quickly as I wanted to install apps / ICS etc as I dont find the amazon software useful.
I downloaded the kindle fire utility (v 0.96), installed the drivers (with the fire unplugged). When connected it is seen as android device with the driver as Android Composite ADB interface.
Using the kfu I then selected option 2 (root with superuser) and it rooted fine, although this did take a while.
It is seen in my PC a the drive "Kindle" and I can see the drive contents. On the kindle it says you can now transfer files.
In ADB is says - ADB status: Online, Boot status: 4000
The PROBLEM is trying to install TWRP recovery.
When I select this it says booting into fastboot (4002). The kindle boots to a screen where kindle fire is written in blue and the top of the screen v 1.4 is written, at the bottom it says press power button to choose boot options. TWRP fails to install immediately.
When I press the power button nothing happens until I hold it for 20 secs and the kindle power turns off. When I turn it back on the same blue kindle fire writing comes up and I have to select from:
- normal boot
- recovery
- reset boot
Pressing the power button allows you to select which option and all of them causes the kindle to boot up fine.
I can change the boot using kfu (option 1) to 4000 or 4002, however, even if I select 4002 and then try to install TWRP it says rebooting and fails the same as above.
I also cannot install fire fire fire either - the same problem occurs.
Basically I am totally stuck, am completely f***ed off and want to throw the kindle out of the window.
Answers greatly appreciated. Cheers in advance.

You might need to install TWRP manually from command prompt.
Put the device in fastboot (4002) and reboot
Download TWRP2.1 and place it in the KFU "tools" folder
Shift+right click on the KFU "tools" folder and select "open command window here"
In the prompt that opens up:

Reboot and change your bootmode to normal.

I used kfu to put into 4002, reboot and check it in 4002
I got openrecovery-twrp-blaze-2.1.1 disc image and put this in tools folder
I used Shift+right click on the KFU "tools" folder and select "open command window here"
In the prompt that opens up:
C:\kfu\tools\ fastboot flash recovery open-recovery-twrp-blaze-2.1.1
I get error: cannot load 'open recovery.......
Did you put .img at the end?

its still just hangs saying waiting for device...........
switched off the by holding the power off button for 20 secs
when I switched it back on it said:
sending 'recovery' (5568kb)... FAILED (data transfer failure (too many links))
Rename TWRP to something more manageable, like twrp.img (optional)
Turn the device off, completely
enter the command
turn the device back on
If you get the same error you might want to check the md5 hash of the TWRP download.
[Edit:] A search of the error message you received points to the wrong type of cable being used. Are you using a standard micro usb cable or one that came with another phone?
I never got a cable with the kindle fire, just a UK charger
I bought a USB data cable from amazon - could this be the problem?

I can't imagine why your cable wouldn't work, but everything I've seen points to the cable as being the problem. It could have a short or bad connection it it...who knows.
You could try different USB ports to see if that produces any results.

Anywhere...just remember where you put them. (sdcard is the preferred spot)
[Edit:] I should probably be more clear. You have to use recovery to flash the ROM, it doesn't install itself. Just be sure to perform a "Factory Reset" before flashing the ROM.

You can go to youtube and find how to install cyanogenmod 7 (OR ANY FIRE ROM) from NAT3MIL. And i installed TWRP 2.1.1 and FireFireFire 1.4a with the smirkit zip you don't need the computer for this.For me it works great.
Today i downloaded the AOKP for kindle fire build 36 you must try this one or Gederom from 13-05-2012 these two are amazing.

Just download the latest find the tools folder shift+right click on the folder itself select open command window here plug your kindle in then type fastboot oem idme bootmode 4000 your kindle should boot normal.
i was curious to get get android market on my kindle today.. and looked up how. i used the kindle fire utility to root it. then my KF it started to go into a loop of the boot logo. it just flashes on and flashes off over and over again.hard reset doesnt affect it at all, it wont even turn off unless i unplug it. it doesnt show up on my computer either.
i dont know if this helps but when i ran the Kf utility it said 'findstr' not recognized.. blah blah blah. and it didnt give me the 1234567 options on there. i just typed in '2' and pressed enter because thats what the video told me .-. it doesnt have a triangle, or a blue screen logo either just the kindle fire logo flashing off and on. I honestly am lost. please keep this noob friendly

How do you reinstall the drivers manually? and also when i go into the kindle fire utility it doesnt give me 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 options... it just says findstr is not a recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. and another thing i tried another utility on here and it said it said my device was not found when i plugged it in , is it because it turns off every 5 seconds?
First before you mess with your drivers shift+ right click on the tools folder in kfu select open command window here power your device off completely leave it unplugged type fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product when it says waiting for device plug in your powered off kindle it should then power on in fastboot mode if you get the response product: kindle then type fastboot -i 0x1949 oem idme bootmode 4000 it will say okay hopefully the type fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot it should then reboot in normal mode

Sounds like there's some sort of PATH problem with your setup, which is why KFU won't work properly. You'll have to manually use ADB/fastboot commands if you want to get things done.
About it turning off constantly, it's probably out of battery. Use the stock wall charger (it provides a greater power output, don't bother with USB or a random clone) so it can refill some. The bootloops may be due to a bad boot mode, but it's a bit hard to pinpont with your description of the issue.

You might have corrupt drivers. Here's how to reinstall them:
Try going to your Control Panel >> Device Manager. If you see an entry for "Android Phone," (Android ADB interface) delete it (and any associations with Portable Devices >> KF or Kindle Fire).
Restart computer.
Then go to your KFU utility folder, open "install_drivers.bat" (right-click "Run Administrator"). This shouldn't take long at all.
You might want to restart here too after.
Then open KFU utility, plug in Kindle - if all went well here, you should read something along the lines of "Online" and "4000".

I rooted my KF with no issues, was able to copy the Jellybean and Gapp zip file to the SD and thought I flashed with no issues. Then rebooted. Now the KF is stuck in a boot loop. If I boot to recovery, that works and allows me the recovery options. if I boot up to normal, it constantly reboots, if I boot to fastboot, it displays the Kindle Fire logo and says "press power button to boot menu" at the bottom and does nothing else. My computer recognizes it as Android ADB interface but will not allow to access the SD ram. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you able to access the SD Card from TWRP? (Mount USB)
If so and the ROM is still in there, wipe cache, dalvik-cache, factory reset and system, then flash/install the ROM again (don't install gapps yet) and reboot. If it boots all the way to the desktop, reboot to recovery and install gapps.
You may also want to check the ROM's hash.
You haven't mentioned what versions of TWRP and FFF do you have, either. Hopefully 2.1.1 or 2.2 for TWRP and 1.4a (blue "fire" on the kindle fire logo) for FFF.

Thanks for your help. It turns out that I didnt even have TWRP installed. Thats fixed. I was able to get roms installed and have different problems. (Will start a new thread in another area) Thank you very much for your help.

Is it normal to lose the ability to get into fastboot via software commands after installing CM10.1? I've tried SU and reboot bootloader - just reboots and stops at the blue KindleFire logo of TWRP. I've tried the fastboot command with the Kindle Fire turned off and disconnected and then plugging it in, and I think that still hangs at the TWRP logo (if I remember correctly). I've tried setting bootmode to 4009 using IDME, that doesn't seem to do anything.
I won't be back from military deployment for a few days, so I don't have my new factory cable to try yet. Just wondering if this is normal, and if not what can I do to fix it?

I've tried setting bootmode to 4009 using IDME, that doesn't seem to do anything.

1st: I have CM 10.2-20131015.UNOFFICIAL-otter2 loaded. Kernel is 3.0.72+. Everything works normal, and I love it, except can't get into fastboot.
Using Terminal Emulator I type in su and get the "[email protected]:/ #" prompt, so I know I have root.
I type reboot bootloader and something appears quickly in response in the terminal window that I can't read because the Kindle reboots immediately. I captured the text to a txt file and what appears is:
Reading idme data ...
Setting bootmode to 7
Writing new vars to temp area
It shows the white and orange KindleFire logo for a brief moment and then black screen. The Kindle appears to turn itself off after the brief appearance of the KindleFire white and orange logo.
The same thing happens if I do reboot bootloader using adb shell.
I can get into TWRP the normal way by pressing the power button at boot time.
I won't have access to my factory cable for a few more days, so so don't know if that works or not.

Make sure to turn ADB on and enable developer options by tapping "build" six times. Now plug your kF2 into a USB port and open a command prompt and type "adb reboot bootloader" with no quotes. You should enter fastboot mode. You should be able to just open a command prompt and type "fastboot" (no tablet plugged in) and see some lines of data which lets you know the path is set right.

adb reboot bootloader and adb reboot recovery both do the same thing - the Kindle reboots, I get the white and orange KindleFire logo for a second and it turns itself off. Press the power button and all is normal. I can get into TWRP by pressing the power key when the blue and white Kindle Fire logo is up.

No, they are not the same thing. One reboots into the bootloader and the other reboots into recovery. My comment had nothing to do with testing a reboot and everything to see if you can enter fastboot mode.
Since you have now stated you can enter TWRP, use this tutorial to push a ROM onto TWRP and then just flash it from there. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2459498

I know that adb reboot bootloader and adb reboot recovery are not the same commands and I know that they are not SUPPOSED to do the same thing. HOWEVER, on MY Kindle both commands ARE doing the same thing. And that is why I know something is wrong. Both commands on MY Kindle ARE having the same result: the Kindle reboots, I get the white and orange KindleFire logo for a second and it turns off.
Why would I want to reinstall a ROM from TWRP when I have a ROM installed? Once I press the power button, if I let it go it boots into CM 10.2 just fine or I can boot into TWRP by pressing the power button at the right time. I cannot reboot in TWRP or fastboot using software commands, and I don't even know if it is supposed to be that way, or if it is a problem.
I did not (and still don't) know if it is normal for the only way to get into fastboot is with a cable after CM 10.2 is installed (and I don't know if I can get into fastboot that way for a few more days), or if I need to reflash a bootloader file or which bootloader file I need to reflash.
I hope that clarified what my problem is.

I followed the procedure listed below from the 'Help how root new update 8.5.1' thread page 10 from andraw40 (which worked fine btw) but when I got to step 7, Fastboot doesn't seem to be doing what it is supposed to do which is reboot my device into Fastboot. I shut my tablet down, issue the command and then plugin my device but all it does is just boot up into the OS. What am I doing wrong? The SDK is installed and ADB appears to be working. With the device plugged into my PC, I can issue the command 'adb devices' and it shows a device plugged in. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For the last several days I have tried as hell to make my Kindle Fire HD to work like an usual android tablet. It was hell! with blocking the tablet, bricking it, reinstall it, coming back to Amazon version, and all of that for many times. Why? Because of too many version of procedures, because of missing important info from different procedures, because of me doing things wrong, and of course, because of me not reading carefully the procedures. Whatever... Finally I get it. And because it is normal to give back, here I am trying to make easy the path for a next "me".
(This procedure is for Windows Vista or above. On Windows XP there will be a lot of problems with ADB.)
So, what I had: Kindle fire HD, 8.9", version 8.5.1
What I have now: Kindle Fire HD, 8.9" (same ), runing CyanogenMod 11 and all the Google Services
How did I get there:
1. install from Amazon the ES File Explorer
2. make sure you enable ADB in Security, on Kindle
3. connect Kindle on computer and make sure you have installed ADB drivers. Check this in Device Manager. If you have the yellow warning, with the tablet connected, install "Kindle_Fire_HD_ADB_Drivers"
4. download, copy on Kindle (in Downloads) and then install "www apks.org-com zhiqupk root apk" to root the tablet. You need to root it in order to give permission to write in System folder. The aplication is the one mentioned by esema1o in the begining (keymasteroot) - Thank you esema1o! It is in Malaysian and you can use Google translate on computer if you are curious about the labels. It will not help you further but it will satisfy your need to know. So: press Mulai Root - it will do something, then will get a message. Press Root, not Batal. Another "doing something" then a new message. Choose Batal. (search on youtoube for "How to Root an Android Device with Key Root Master"). Done! You have rooted the Kindle. Reboot.
5. Open ES File Explorer and in Tools put all the switches on. Actually you will need only the Root Explorer. If you have problems keeping on the Root explorer reboot, open again ES File Explorer, try again. On the same tablet I had experienced different result after restoring the tablet to original Amazon version. Some time, I let the tablet open, come back after 15-30 minutes and try again to activate Root explorer. Surprise! it worked! Other times worked from first try or at seccond try. It is about your luck! Now, after is staying on, press on Root Explorer. A window will pop-up. Choose there to allow w/r on System folder.
6. Download "KindleFireHD89Root.zip" (you can fiind it by search on this forum by name. I'm not yet allawed to post links so remove the space before here: downloadandroidrom com/file/KindleFire/8.9root/KindleFireHD89Root.zip). Extract. Navigate into "stuff" folder. Shift +right click in window, then choose "Open command window here". (Or you just run cmd and navigate to "stuff" folder.)
7. Check fastboot avability:
Type the following command into the cmd window you had opened before at 6.
fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product
it should return:
< waiting for device>
Then connect Kindle to computer with a regular usb cable. Power down Kindle. Press power buton to start Kindle. . It *SHOULD* show a Fastboot screen and your terminal window should show something like:
product: Jem-PVT-Prod-04
Type this to reboot out of fastboot mode:
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
8. follow this procedure: wiki cyanogenmod org/w/Install_CM_for_jem (again, remove spaces and add points to have working link)
Note: when you get to the point "Installing CyanogenMod from recovery" you may be confuse about the fact that adb commands are not working. If so, you check not to be in the recovery boot mode. Just shut down Kindle by long pressing power button, or reboot from meniu and if not passing the booting yellow logo, shut it down again by long pressing power button, then go in the fastboot mode again (see the first part of point 7; do not execute reboot! if you did reboot try again to enter in fastboot mode). Now, in fastboot mode, you can follow the instructions to copy zip files on tablet (I used the cyanogenmode 11 and Google apps zip files). After copy them on tablet, go back to the procedure at the point 4 where you start the kindle in recovery mode again by pressing volume up etc. If you do not succeed by pressing volume up during boot, simple enter again in fastboot (you should know how to do it by now ) and from terminal window on computer (cmd window where you are in "stuff" folder) type:
fastboot -i 0x1949 oem recovery
At this point you are back in the procedure at point 6. Do or not the backup and go next. I did not encountered any problems from this point on.
That is all. Sorry for my English, and I hope that my "procedure" will help someone. Again, thank to all the good people that bother to help us!
